Seeds

One of my most favorite parts of being an actor is telling stories.

Every show, every film – each is the baby of a writer who had something to say.

Twelve Years a Slave. Woman in Gold. Forrest Gump. Gone With the Wind. The Sound Of Music. Granted, some stories are more *ahem* – sophisticated – than others (I’m looking at you Billy Madison) but it’s a story nonetheless.

I mean, don’t get me wrong…I like a good imaginary Mr. Penguin just like the next guy. Tally who who! Sabadoo!

But I especially enjoy stories with a little more — depth.

I didn’t really make a big huh-bub about it on here, but just a few days ago, BBB reached 10,000 followers.

Which, to be completely honest, is really crazy to think about.

I am so completely grateful and humbled that you guys would care to read my story.

I have never been blogging “for the numbers” – BBB has always been a place for me to just share my journey, and all God has done for me, in the hopes that maybe one person might find hope or encouragement or solace from life’s storms here. That juuuust maybe I could be like Billy Madison and say, “You ain’t cool unless you pee your pants.” You know — really be there for someone 🙂

But I wanted to just share something that my family did to celebrate 10,000 that really meant a lot.

They sent me a shadow box with a screen shot of my little counter ticker reading 10,000, and then they wrote words around it that they think describe my blog. Such as, witty, honest, etc…

But the coolest thing, was that they then filled the shadow box with 10,000 seeds.

Each one signifying one of you.

And I hesitated to share about this because I didn’t want to sound like, “Hey guys! I’m so great, look at all the seeds I’m planting. I’m so awesome, I must have ESPN or something…”

e243312fa8ebbdc582df4fb93efb0378

Because let me be crystal clear here: That’s not what I think or how I perceive myself.

Especially because I was not the one doing the things — it was God.

But…

Here’s what I do think:

I think each and every one of us “plant seeds” every single time we open up to another person.

Because your story matters.

What you’ve been through matters. That pain you’ve endured. The heartache you’ve experienced. The fear you’ve overcome. The lessons you’ve learned through trials. Those things mean something.

And when you have the courage to share that truth with another person, you never know how it is going to affect them.

Because, let’s be real here: we’re all pretty good at wearing masks. Making it seem like we’ve got our stuff together.

But if we’re being really honest, there are seasons in life when that’s just not the case. Just ask Gretchen Weiners —

tumblr_m7irq8VlOI1qg2nu5o1_500.gif

We get it…Brutus was cute too.

But she’s a prime example of the emotional weight we’re carrying and concealing sometimes.

So by you sharing your story, you never know what impact that could have on a person. How, by you being vulnerable, it encourages them to be vulnerable. To be brave. To be strong. To have faith.

And if you ask me, that’s what life’s about.

So anyways. I guess what I really want to say is thank you for allowing me to share my story. For allowing me to be vulnerable and honest, and be received with such love and acceptance and encouragement.

I cannot begin to express how you have positively impacted my life.

And while we’re on the topic of sharing our stories, just this week, Wayne Wells released an episode of his podcast, While I’m Thinking About It, where he interviewed me. It was an honor to be invited to speak with him.

So if you aren’t familiar with my story, or want to hear it from my own voice, I invite you to head over to his podcast to take a listen.

Mark 5:19 Then Jesus said, “Go…tell them all the things the Lord has done for you.”

You got it, dude.

  1. You are so incredibly inspiring. I love that you incorporate Jesus into your blogs because He was crucial to my recovery as well. So proud of you. Xoxo

  2. Congratulations BBB! God and I’m sure all your followers know that you deserve it. Continue to spread His love and your faith in Him, and God will greatly bless you. Btw, that shadow box looks super awesome! 😉

    • Thank you so much! That really means a lot:) yeah, my family did a really special thing. I’m super grateful:) so glad you stopped by! Enjoy your evening! Hugs and love xox

  3. Happy Thursday!

I know for once I got here before the multitudes 😉 but let me just join the soon-to-be 10,000-strong throng saying “Dude, that shadow box idea is so stellar!”

And I love that thought; every encounter seeds are given, often both ways, and let’s not forget that not everyone has nice seeds. So, thank-you for cultivating love, beauty and kindness in a world where weeds are so much more common-place. Praise Jesus he has such an audience in you!

Have a super duper evening! (:

    • Hey hey Carson! Aw thanks:) yeah my family came up with that idea together. I was so touched! And wow, thank you for such a kind note. You’ve absolutely made my night:) hugs and love to you friend. Happy Thursday indeed! Xox

  4. I’ve only been reading your blogs for a short while as well as writing my own and trying to figure out the direction I’m going with them.
My blog seems to be taking in a life of its own. Completely not where I thought it would go. However, like you it is my hope that it will inspire, give hope, and plant seeds in the hearts of those who read it.
    Congratulations on your accomplishments!!!!

  5. That was just fabulous. What encouraging words! I often tell people we are all a song, but a story works just as well. Stories just waiting to be told that have a big impact on those around us. 🙂

  6. You are one of my favorite blogs that I follow. I’m going to check out that podcast. Congrats on 10,000! Quite an accomplishment!

  7. Congratulations! You’re making an impact, and it’s really something to hit such a huge milestone. This post sure hit all the right notes. It really shows what a positive and humble person you are. Keep on keeping on!

  8. What What a milestone! Quite a creative gift from your family. I am so glad I came across your pages here. Thank you for all you do.

      • Wow what an amazing achievement to have 10,000 followers and how beautiful that your family gave you 10,000 seeds to celebrate. Writing is a seed and by sharing our stories we can plant those seeds in other people even though we have no idea how they will grow. I thought of you this week as I was trying to restart my freelance journalism career which I had to abandon for 11 years because of my cocaine addiction and mental health problems. I kind of prayed, although I’m not sure God exists…Keep sharing your wonderful story your faith is so strong.

      • Thank you so much Caroline! 🙂 that really means a lot! Yeah, my family was so kind to do that. I definitely don’t take them for granted. You’re right – writing can be a powerful tool. I’m so glad you’re taking the steps to restart that career! I’ll definitely keep that in my prayers 🙂 He’s always listening and wants to delight His children 🙂 hugs and love my friend xox

  9. Beautifully said!! This is exactly what my site is about-stepping In the Arena and having the courage to share our stories- we all have them and they are all amazing in their own right. Congratulations on 10,000!! 🙂

  10. Great post 🙂 Regardless of whether or not it is the director or writer or actor or just an average joe, all of us have a story to tell that is bound to interest at least somebody. Hey it could even be from a multiple point of view (i.e. Rashomon), but each one I think makes us laugh and cry in different ways depending on what it is 🙂 Anyway, keep up the great work as always 🙂

    • Thanks John! You brought up some great points. We never know how our story will impact someone. The important thing is to tell it. Glad
You stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  11. Great interview in podcast. You sounded nervous at first but then the Holy Spirit rose up inside you and you showed much confidence. Nice job. And yes, trust is key, Proverbs 3:5,6

  14. Reblogged this on In the Arena and commented:
The miles we’ve run and the scars we’ve endured are what help guide us on our path, ‘plant seeds’ and connect with others on a deeper level. Beautifully written and worth the read.

  15. Well, look at God! Congratulations, young lady. You certainly use the grace God has given you to be transparent. You certainly inspire me and may you have 10,000 more people to tell of the goodness of Jesus! Hugs☺️

  19. I love that your family celebrated your truth, your journey, your honesty and that I’ve found you out here in the bloggoverse as well — your story, your kindness, your dedication to your truth is humbling to read and rewarding to reflect on. Thank you for allowing yourself to be vulnerable, to be so open and honest, uplifting and encouraging; it really means a lot! May God continue to keep you and bless you abundantly!

  30. I can never forget going to church one Sunday for ladies breakfast and really witnessing a story of miraculous healing of anorexia. Their faith and their belief in Christ was the key… thank you and God bless you for shining your light

  31. This is awesome! Good for you and good for your family for their demonstration of love to you in such a way! I really enjoy reading your posts and sharing your triumphs through the reading! God inspired me to do something today, and when I read your post it was like an endorsement of the idea! Thank you.

    • Thank you so much Charlene! Yes, my family sure is special. Thanks for all you support and encouragement. Oh that’s so great! God is good! Hugs and love xox

  32. This is really beautiful, faith and hard work really does pay off. Keep planting those seeds in people’s live hun and watch them germinate as people recognise that it can only be God that used you. You are a wonderful vessel by His grace. Keep it up 💞

  33. Oh my word! Congratulations! (Is it weird for me to say this!?… I’ll say it anyway…) I’m SO Proud of you! 😀 May the Lord continue to bless you and share your story and the work He is doing in your life! Thank YOU!

  34. Happy day! That’s so exciting. God is blessing your obedience in sharing how He’s changed and shaped your life. Just imagine – there’ll be a whole bunch of people in Heaven who (after we’re all done initially hitting the deck in worship of the King of Kings) will hug you and thank you for speaking into our lives! Well done!

  35. Hey girl! I love that you’re sharing your story. I’m all about vulnerability and honesty, and it looks like you are too! Thanks for the likes on my posts. I just started blogging this week and it means so much to know that great bloggers like you are actually reading. Cheers to bloggy friendships!

  36. Great post, great quote: Mark 5:19. When I was contemplating several years ago telling my recovery story via blogging, I almost decided against it. Then my daily devotional said, “The story of what God has done in your life is a story that needs to be told.”
And I added, “it has to be told for if I touch just ONE person it’s worthwhile.”

  37. Hi BBB – love the closing words “You got it, dude” I am one you have blessed with your willingness to use the courage God has given to share your story. I listened to the podcast interview last night and I just imagined that moment when you were singing the verse from ‘Here I am to worship’ and collapsing in tears and laughter as God using those tears to wash away all your guilt and shame…keep up the great work of sharing the Good News sister! I know you will. You are blessed to be a blessing. Peace to you and your family.

    • Hey there friend. Gosh, thank you so much for this. I’m so touched that you took the time to listen to my interview. That means so so much. Yes, that was a very powerful moment for me. One that I will remember forever. God is good. Thanks again for your support and kindness. You are a blessing to me 🙂 hugs and love xox

  38. Wow am blessed…… what your family did is just awesome and yes we all have a story to tell, by you sharing yours and allowing God to be Glorified is just amazing. God bless you

  39. would you dare to play your own story? Or, would you care to play mine, 50 years of torture, starting with the seed that was forced into the being that was pressured to be my mother, aka Virgin Mary. As emotional as a refrigerator, mind-controlled.

      • You’re welcome! I’m happy to recommend your blog to anyone. I hope you don’t mind my bragging on you a little. You want to stay humble, remembering everything you are praised for is a gift from God, but I have to say this. You have a wonderful gift with words. To have come through everything you have, to have the clear and compassionate perspective you do, and to be able to write about it in such a beautiful and honest way. Many people have a testimony, but few have the wonderful writer’s voice you do to tell it. I see in you everything I aspire to be as a Christian and a writer.

      • Oh my gosh David. Wow. I am so touched by your words. Thank you for this incredible nudge of encouragement and support. You are a blessing. God is good:) sending big hugs xox

  40. This has made me think about my story. I’m not sure if this is my story now. It definitely was when I was younger and is still apart of my life, but is it my only story. I’m not sure. I haven’t shared this story with that many people and don’t know if I’ll ever blog about it anytime soon, but I’m a survivor of sexual abuse and assault.

    • Hi friend. Thank you so much for having the courage to share this. Your story matters. And it will help others. Give them hope. Give them courage. And, perhaps, even give you some peace and healing along the way. You are a survivor and have a voice. Know that I am praying for you and sending you the biggest hug. Xoxo

  41. You are a garden of vibrancy and beauty because of the seeds you have sown. Remember the words of the old rock song “Sowing in the Seeds of Love”. That’s what you sow and from it you have reaped a bountiful and loving harvest. Hugs and God Bless every day!!

  42. Ten, scripturally, stands for trials. Dear Beautybeyondbones, congratulations for having overcome all your trials, anorexia inclusive. Shine on like thousands and millions of stars. It’s the LORD’s doing so it must manifest marvelous brilliance. Amen.

    • Hi friend! Thank you so much for this encouragement. Amen to that- God is good and I am so grateful to all he’s done in my life! Thanks for stopping by! Hugs and love xox

  43. That’s fantastic! I’m honoured to be one of your little seeds. What a thoughtful family you have. Well done for all your hard work – you deserve each one of those seeds. xx

  44. I absolutely LOVE this! That’s what we do, though, we plant seeds – which is why it’s so important to be kind. We don’t want the seeds to lose its power to grow. Thanks for sharing this! And a HUGE congratulations to the 10 000!!! 🙂

  45. What a special milestone and what an impact it portrays! I love this blog and I appreciate your honesty. I’m sure you’re helping so many others who have similar struggles. That’s what God wants each of us to do with the story of our lives…..the story that He has written. 🙂

  46. Even with all the ups and downs in my life, I always know God is good. Thank you for being so inspiring. I love your blog and you deserve every one of those 10,000 followers. 😊

  47. Perfect….
After all, there is that quote (can’t remember where from): “we’re all stories in the end”.

BTW, if you’re on Facebook…have you heard of the group “Catholic Women Speak”? They/we have a public page and a private group.
