DRINK YOUR VITAMINS!

Well here we are, January 3.

In the theme of mind/body/spirit wellness from the inside-out, I thought I’d share my secret weapon. A special drink that I enjoy with my breakfast just about everyday that packs a punch in the nutrition department.

Now, this is a delicate post, because truthfully, in eating disorder recovery, healthy eating can be taken to a debilitating and dangerous extreme, in what’s calledย orthorexia.

And after Monday’s post, I just wanted to clarify something: Before I start, I am inย no way encouraging a “juice fast.” I have never and will never partake in one. Everything in moderation. Including moderation itself.ย I like to think of juicing as a great supplement to a healthy diet — it’s like drinking a delicious vitamin!

And given how much it helped strengthen my mom’s brain function during her stroke recovery, I had to share, IMHO, the nectar of the gods!

All that being said, drinking a green juice with breakfast or as a snack can be a great kickstart to getting your body back on track and into health mode if, say, you’ve spent the last two weeks drinking egg nog like water, and eating your weight in Christmas cookies.

That’s right! Kinda a “no brainer,” but green juice isย suuuuperย healthy. Drinking fresh pressed juice provides your body with a highly concentrated dose of vitamins and minerals. Plus, when you drink it within 20 minutes of pressing, the live enzymes from the juice actively repair the cells of your body! Juicing also strengthens your immune system, builds strong bones, helps with weight maintenance, and gives you an energy boost too ๐Ÿ™‚ Plus it’s delicious. What’s not to love?

Would ya look at all those active enzymes — mmm ๐Ÿ˜‰ Come to mama!

During my mom’s stroke recovery, I made her one of these every afternoon. The active enzymes helped to rebuild her brain cells and provide specific healing minerals for memory and brain function.

Juice can also be great for an afternoon pick me up! When the 3 o’clock slump hits, who needs Starbucks when you can enjoy a green juice?!

Now, you may be thinking … “enjoy” and “green juice” in the same sentence?ย This girl has lost her marbles. Well, not quite.

You see, there’s system to making green juice tasteย great, while still packing in the dark leafy greens.

Enter: theย trinity”ย of all your juicing needs:ย GINGER, LEMON, & GREEN APPLE!

IMG_1288

Yep! Just make sure to include half a lemon, an apple, and 1 inch nub of ginger in your juice and you’ll be all set!

Additionally, I like to stick to a 70/30 (or a 60/40 if you’re new to juicing) ratio of vegetables to fruit. 70% of what you add should be veggies, and 30% should be fruit for the most delicious and nutritious bevvy.

So here’s my go-to juice recipe that I will often have with breakfast:

Caralyn’s Standard Green Juice (Serves One)

What you Need:
4 stalks of celery
2 carrots
5 stalks of kale
1/2 cucumber
1 green apple
1/2 lemon (peeled)
1 inch nub of peeled, fresh ginger

Tools:
Juicer – (This is the one I have andย love)
Good knife
Cutting board

This is my favorite juice. It’s sweet and tangy with a “zing” from the ginger. I’m not kidding guys: you can’t taste the kale.

You could even get the kids excited about drinking this “Shrek Juice!”

Final Tips:

  1. Put a plastic bag in the “garbage” part of your juicer — where the pulp is discarded. That way, you won’t have to clean the basket, because it’s all in the bag! (Because, let’s be honest: cleaning the juicer can be a pain.)IMG_6613
  2. If you’re pinched for time, make a double or triple batch ahead of time. Three juices – One cleaning of the machine. Just be sure to store them in a sealed glass container in the fridge. They keep for up to 2 days. Just be sure to shake before drinking!
  3. You can peel ginger with a SPOON! Yep! So much easier, and less dangerous too!IMG_6615
  4. Be sure to peel the skin off of the lemon. The skin gives the juice a bitter taste.
  5. Even with the “holy trinity,” if you still think it needs to be sweeter, you can add a few drops of honey or pure liquid stevia. (Just be sure to use alcohol free.)
  6. Finally, drink your juice out of a wine or martini glass! It make you feel special and that you’re treating yourself — because you are!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Alright, guys, cheers to health!

  3. Have tried adding mint leaves?
I also saw in YT, that the chlorophyll juice is very good but it generates weight loss, can be grown at home, with wheat grains planted in a small pot.

    • Thanks Carlos! oh, i haven’t but that sounds wonderful! Yeah, sometimes when I’m under the weather I’ll get a shot of wheatgrass from my local health food store. tastes like grass but it’s got healing properties! haha thanks for stopping by! Hugs and love xox

  4. I really need to start taking care of myself better and have more vitamins, honestly I think it takes discipline, that I just don’t have yet, going to ask doctor when I finally make an appointment what vitamins I need to start taking. Also the cultural differences between the UK & US still makes my laugh, over here that v sign you’re making in the photo is just as bad as sticking your middle finger up at someone ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ as always fantastic post but not sure that will be on my list anytime soon ๐Ÿ˜‚ Lots of love Caralyn x

  5. I got into juicing after watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead hosted by Joe Cross. My current, and first, juicer is literally on it’s last legs and while the Breville is a higher price point then I’m comfortable with, it’s definitely on my list. I can’t describe in words just how awesome drinking juice from veggies every day makes you feel, totally worth every minute required to clean the juicer after you’re done. I also make juice in batches and store in air tight glass bottles. The good stuff won’t go away as fast as long as you keep the air from getting to it. I fill my bottles to the very top and then screw on the cap. It is good to around the 2nd or 3rd day, but I rarely get past the same day as I drink through the day with meals. My go to juice is 8 leaves kale, 4 celery stalks, 1 cucumber, 3 apples, 1 peeled lemon, nub of ginger. I’ve used 1/2 head of cabbage or 2 stalks of broccoli as an alternative to the kale.

    • Thank you Andrew! Same here! What a powerful documentary. Itโ€™s so true – itโ€™s like a total body recharge ๐Ÿ™‚ that sounds like a delicious batch of juice! Thanks for sharing the recipe! Big hugs to you xox

    • thanks Ivan! Green is SO good! haha ooh yeah – mint chocolate chip and pistachio! woo! ๐Ÿ™‚ Hugs and love xox

  6. I’m glad you wrote about this! I have been contemplating in what direction to take my blog this year. I’m so over writing out working out and weight. Your Ed post and this post reminded me why I got into the healing art sin the first place. It is where my heart resides as to that end, I will be posting more about herbs, essential oils and wellness of that sort. Thanks for the help!

    • Thank you so much Melissa! I’m glad this was revealing for you. that’s awesome! can’t wait to read your upcoming posts!Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks! Oh it is delicious. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! Haha Hugs and love xox

  7. Looks great! I love juicing. Sounds similar to my go to recipe. I upgraded to a masticating juicer Omega 8000 with vaccuum-sealed containers from Bed Bath and Beyond. It allows me to juice and store a whole weeks-worth at one time ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Thanks for the recipe!!

      • The centrifugal juicers are faster and louder but typically the juice doesnโ€™t last as long. The masticating is slower and quieter but you can also juice wheatgrass and other things. There are pros and cons to each. Im loving it so far. One of my favorites was a grape and, lemon and jalapeno recipe. Hope Chicago is/was fun

      • Oh that sounds like an amazing combo with the jalapeรฑo! Mmm! Thanks again x

  8. Is there an alternative to cucumber? I have tried it many different way (including juice) and I just havenโ€™t gained the taste for it.

    • Hmm….maybe increase the amount of carrots? Or you could use a beet! Hugs and love xox

  9. I haven’t tried juicing yet. I’ve only done green smoothies in the blender. This sounds like a good combo for health!

    • Hi Amy! Oh it is definitely a great combo for health! Thanks for stopping by! Hugs and love xox

  10. I can’t help but wonder, would this work in a food processor? I understand that it would be chunky, but it’ll be a little while before I can order a juicer (I’m huge on smoothies…never tried making my own juice) and I do think this would be great. It sounds fantastic! In fact, I think I’m going to get the ingredients & try it anyway. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll let you know how it goes!

    • Hey friend! hmmmm i bet it would! it would be a smoothie!! ๐Ÿ™‚ yeah, let me know how it works! You may need to add a little water/coconut water to get the food processor going initially. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hugs and love xox

      • I tried it out, and it tasted quite good! The texture was actually still very smooth, just a little bit thicker than if I had used a juicer. I did use a bit of water & added ice, (I like my drinks to be VERY cold!) and it turned out well. Bonus factor: with the fresh ginger & other goodies it helped ease some severe morning sickness. ๐Ÿ˜€

      • Oh yay!!!! Iโ€™m so glad you enjoyed it!! And yes! Def an added bonus!! Hugs and love xox
