Sundance FUNdance

What up from Sundance!? I’m still in Park City! The snow is still snowin’ and the film festival is still boppin’.

I’m so glad you enjoyed my monster cookie recipe yesterday! Those have been a serious hit around here. Healthy, nutrition packed, delicious cookies? What’s not to love.

I can’t believe it’s only Thursday! It has been a jam packed week, and I’ve definitely had some exciting highlights πŸ™‚

Right now, it’s 7am, and I just woke up from a solid five hours of sleep. You see, last night, my sister-in-laws (who are really just my BFFs) and my brother went downtown and saw anΒ awesome concert. It was in this tiny, intimate venue, so we had incredible spots. The singer was Skylar Grey. And if you check out my Instagram Story right now, you can hear her play! But she’s the songwriter/vocalist behind probably at least one of your favorite songs. (Love the Way you Lie with Rhianna; Coming Home with Diddy; Walk on Water w/ Beyonce; Glorious with Macklemore). Anywho, after the concert we stayed out and danced at a club and just let loose. It was so. much. fun. And shout out to my other brother who stayed home to watch the little nieces and put them to bed. Thanks for doing that and allowing us to have that great time πŸ™‚

Reflecting back on the evening, I’m just so grateful for family. My sibs and I have been through so much together, and it’s so awesome to know that there are people who have your back and vice versa.

Quick shoutout to this week’s sponsor: Amazon Prime! I love my Prime membership – I get FREE two-day shipping on every order, — like my heated gloves! — plus, their movies and TV shows are arguably better than Netflix. And you can try it for FREE for 30 days. I wouldn’t mention it if it weren’t actually amazing. πŸ™‚ Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial

We also saw some movies!

We saw this really interesting film about this prodigy teen chef, called “Chef Flynn.” He built a professional kitchen in his bedroom at the age of five, and by seven he was running an 8-course, gourmetΒ meal from his living room. He’s now a teenager and is opening his own restaurant in NYC next month. It was an incredible documentary, and I got to meet him afterwards! Who knows, maybe I’ll have to post a restaurant review of his new place next month! πŸ™‚

We did have a celeb run in. My sister-in-law and I went to another concert on Monday — Diplo. He’s a pretty famous DJ who has collaborated with Justin Bieber on Cold WaterΒ (my fav song) and Where are U Now; and Usher, Beyonce, Big Sean, Shakira, and more. Anyways. His concert was pretty crazy: Imagine 800 twenty somethings, all jumping up and down, capturing the flashing lights and fog and techno on their iPhones. Pretty crazy scene. But anyways, when we were walking out after the concert, we ran into the rapper, A$AP Rocky. He and his crew were rolling up to the club. Pretty exciting. πŸ™‚

We’ve also eaten at some awesome restaurants. My favorite was the Seafood Buffet at mid mountain. It’s not just any Golden Corral. This is a gourmet buffet. All you can eat, fresh-never-frozen King Crab Legs. Need I say more?

Needless to say, we’ve had a lot of fun.

And in terms of chairlift conversations? None yet that really were striking. Although my uber driver was starting a halfway-house of sorts for kids and teens that have been rescued from human trafficking. So that was a really powerful conversation. Just goes to show that one person can really make a difference.

One last story: so last night, obviously, I was with my older brother. And he’s 6’3″, really well put together, successful guy. Anywho. So I was talking to this guy at the bar for a minute, and my brother introduced himself to him, “Hey, I’m her brother.” So the conversation ended, the night goes on. My brother has to step outside for literally three minutes. During that time, that guy comes back over and slips me a napkin with his name and phone number on it and goes, “So your brother is super intimidating, so I figured while he’s gone for a minute I’d make my move.”

Bahhhhahhahahaha. Oh my gosh, we all died laughing afterwards. How funny.

In true Caralyn fashion, I didn’t follow up.

Oh well, such is life.

TAKE AWAYS FROM THE TRIP

  1. Family is important. Cherish time together, and make the effort to keep those relationships strong and current. Because at the end of the day, nothing is more important than family.
  2. Always wear more layers than you think you need.
  3. Heated gloves and heated ski boots literally are life changing. I went from only being able to ski for an hour without freezing to the core, to being able to be out all day for six hours.
  4. Kids like to copy your every move, so make sure your actions and words are worth copying.
  5. People love photos, even if they protest taking them at the time. It’s worth the slight inconvenience.
  6. There’s nothing more beautiful than a conversation where you’re looking someone in the eyeballs. Taking your eyes off your phone or screen is vital for connecting with people you love.
  7. Drink waaaaay more water than you think you need at altitude.
  8. Cocktails in Utah are weak. Get over it. Or stick to shots.
  9. iPhones don’t like the cold.
  10. Snapchat is fun and worth feeling like an old fart trying to figure out how to use it. πŸ™‚

I want to close with a lyric from Skylar Grey’s song, Moving Mountains that we heard last night that really spoke to me.

“And instead of moving mountains, let the mountains move you.”

Have a great rest of your week, friends!

See you Monday for programming as usual!

  1. Hey sunshine that smile on your face simply lights up the place, now down to business now that you’ve made me fat looking at that cookie. 1) The snow was hard packed or fluffy 2) Any international films i should be on the look out for from the festival.

    • Oh my gosh what a kind thing to say! thank you πŸ™‚ it was a mix – it snowed a BUNCH and so those days it’s been fluffy! yes! there’s one with Paul Rudd I think called The Catcher was a Spy.

  2. Holy crap! I LOVE SKYLAR GREY! I Love her album Natural Causes, its a good album to drive at night to 🀘🏽🀘🏽πŸ”₯πŸ”₯πŸ”₯yet another awesome post as well!! You rock the hardest my friend, hugs all around! πŸ˜€πŸ”₯

  3. “I’m her brother”, would get most guys to back off. I only had to do that a couple times with my sister. Be glad you have a brother who looks out for you.

      • Aw. You are very graciously welcome. Hugs and love back to you. The next thing is maybe you can enjoy putting your bare feet next to a nice warm fire.

  4. Unless your brother has tattoos on his face and wears brass knuckles, you absolutely do not need a guy who’s scared of him (wuss). If your brother does look like that, you absolutely need a guy who isn’t afraid of him! No loss not following up on dead fish.

    • Isn’t it so moving?! I downloaded it and have been listening to it non stop!! I love her voice. Thanks for stopping by! Hugs and love xox

  5. “I’m her brother”
    😨
πŸ€”Comeback – “Hello, I’m her future fiance, glad to meet ya bro”
    😎
You – πŸ‘©πŸ‘  “… these shoes were made for walkin…”

  6. First, I’m so glad you are having a grand time with family and friends at the festival.

Second, the experience at the bar is you big, flashing, neon sign, telling you what all of your BBB-ers already know. You’re an attractive young woman. Follow up, you silly goose!!! He might not be the one, but he can be β€œpractice” at the whole dance of finding HIM.

Third, just reinforcing your #6. Put down the tech and make actual contact!! Electronic have helped in many areas, but they’ve made us less human in too many ways.

Fourth, I was struck by your many smiling pictures on the right margin. This from the anonymous girl who wouldn’t show her face such a short time ago. Again, I’m so happy for you shining your light!!

    Safe travels!

    • Thanks Jeff:) yeah isn’t it crazy how it’s all come full circle? It’s been friends like you who have made that transition process happen and be possible. Seriously. The friendship and kindness you’ve shown means all the world. And I can’t wait to meet your lovely Julie πŸ™‚ thanks for the confidence boost! Amen – putting down the electronics soon and hitting the slopes! Happy Friday!! Also – my India trip is in jeopardy because my traveling partner is having visa issues because her dad is from Pakistan. So maybe this is God’s way of protecting me. I’ll keep you posted. Hugs and love xox

      • There have been many times that my business travel plans get blown out of the water on short or no notice, and I’ve learned that God always has something better swinging in behind a “disaster.” Hopefully, this is what’s happening to your India trip. Julie and I haven’t had a chance to plan out a Big Apple bite yet, but we both want to see more stuff there and, of course, spend time with you! Stay safe and warm!!

  7. My friend hung out with Diplo for a bit when he bought our soccer team. It was a partnership of some sort. He’s umm. Like Conan O’Brien in real life. Wonder why you’re brother had to do that. Not a fan of club drama. I’ve always just sat at the bar with the owners and smoked cigars. Played chess.

    • Oh wow that’s so awesome!! Haha nice. Yeah, sometimes it’s fun to just go to place and dance. I’m definitely into the chill bar scene though too. Especially with good people πŸ™‚ never could quite get the hang of chess πŸ™‚ Hugs and love xox

      • Ha. I’m not a dancer. I stopped drinking a long time ago. Chess is a game of choices. A billion times a billion times a billion times a billion of them times a billion of them. I was ranked for a while but even that felt. Strange? I’m not one for attention seeking behaviors.

I was invited to a comic con and declined. I’m busy, drawing. So. I guess I’m doomed for how we find, love and all the things. Just seems like a huge commitment, I got old. Maybe you’re way is better.
