Lucky 37

Oh my gosh I am sick as a dog.

giphy

If you listen to the podcast versions of my posts over on Patreon, you may have noticed that I had the early signs of the “sniffles” last Thursday. Well, those innocent little sniffles have now become a full fledged sinus/upper respiratoryΒ nightmare.

I honestly can’t rememberΒ ever being this sick. We’re going on day 5, and I pray that I start to turn the corner soon!

ANYWHO

Big news!

First of all, last week – on Monday – I was interviewed by 2 radio stations in California about this blog, and about my book, Bloom! So exciting!! I talked with this wonderful woman for about 30 minutes. They’re going to air the segment on an upcoming Saturday morning. And as soon as they do, I’ll upload it here so y’all can listen to it, too!

On that note,Β my podcast mic came in the mail yesterday!!!!Β

So as soon as my voice returns, I’m going to start putting some guests and episodes together! EEK!

Lastly….drum roll please….

We hit 37,000 subscribers!Β

This is such exciting news, and I wanted to just say aΒ huge thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives to read this blog, share your thoughts, and pass it along to your friends. It honestly means the absolute world. My life is so full becauseΒ you’reΒ in it. And I know that’s super cheesy, by y’all have honestly enriched my life with your friendship and compassion and acceptance. SoΒ thank you.

So I thought it might be fun today to do something a little different. I wanted to do something creative with the number 37. And goodness knows I’m not about to ask to you read through a “listicle” of 37 items. And frankly, I don’t feel qualified to be dishing out advice like I’m the Dalai freakin’ Lama or something.

So I thought….I’m going to share five of theΒ best pieces of life advice I’ve ever received….in 37 words!

1) Β  “Just do the next right thing.” -Mom

Life can be challenging. Be it recovery, a goal, your career path, a relationship. Sometimes it can be completely overwhelming/scary to even know where to begin. Just do the next right thing. Baby steps add up.

2) Β  “Make emotional bank account deposits.” – Dad

A bank account for relationships. Every generosity, every kindness, every time you keep your word or act with integrity is an emotional bank account deposit. Deposits build trust . And trust is the key to long-lasting, healthy relationships.

3) Β  “Don’t shoot yourself in the foot with your words.” – Mom

Gossiping may make you feel “accepted” at the time, but the reality is that everyone you just gossipedΒ to, can no longer trust you. You are literally shooting your reputation in the foot by gossiping about others.

4) Β Β “Sometimes it’s good to go to bed hungry” – Dad

My dad said this to me once after we drove all day home from vacation. My newly-recovered self was really annoyed and concerned that he didn’t have dinner that night. (And I hesitate to even put this on an eating disorder recovery website for fear of triggering someone, but it really has stuck with me.) It’s always good to remember how blessed you are. To remember how bleak thingsΒ could be. We are all infinitely more blessed than we could even comprehend. (Sorry couldn’t get that one down to 37 words!)

5) Β  Change the world one relationship at a time. – Fr. Mike Schmitz (Paraphrased)

Our greatest tool to reach people about Christ, or strengthen our communities is through the power of friendship. God is love, and what better way to show that love to another person than by being their friend. ((Listen to his amazing podcast on this topic.))

*And one more thing, last week’s post on the Boy Scouts definitely got you guys talking! It got close to 100 shares on Facebook, which is pretty amazing! (Thank you for sharing it!!) There were numerous comments that touched on LGBTQ issues and same sex attraction. And I wanted to just take a moment to pass along an incredible resource on those topics…and it’s a book written by the rockstar, Fr. Mike Schmitz. It’s called Made for Love, and it really does an incredible job talking about those topics from a faith standpoint. It’s Fr. Mike at his best. You can get it here.

Here is a link that explains it – https://myloudbipolarwhispers.com/2018/05/01/i-need-you-please-help-me-with-my-new-project-our-story-is-our-glory/Β Β You don’t have to participate, if you are not comfortable or too busy etc. No pressure and no rush. 6. WOW! Congratulations, this is so awesome!! πŸ˜€ Gotta’ say, my favorite piece of advice is the “Don’t shoot yourself in the foot with your words” from your mom. Love it! I think I’m gonna’ use with my son!

(I think I did that in 37 words!)

    • Thank you so much Joy!! Yeah – she’s a smart lady for sure!! Hugs and love xox

  7. Feeling sick or not your accomplishments are pretty impressive. You are truly blessed and even more you use your talents to help others. Thanks for not being selfish and benefiting only yourself. Thank the Lord I found all of your means of sharing. Good job! John

  9. Just do the next right thing, and emotional bank accounts. These are… Well, at fifty I get these are the most important things. Also forgive.

    Congratulations, onward.

  10. So sorry you feel badly, Sweetie. I’ve had bad allergies most of my life so I know how the stuffy head feels. Add a bit of fever to the mix and you have full blown miseries. πŸ˜‰

Congratulations on the 37K+ !!! Doesn’t surprise me, though. I’ve been reading through your past posts, getting a feel for your personality and writing style. And I continue to be impressed. You have the gift of being able to put on paper (so to speak) what you communicate. In other words, I can listen to a podcast or read your text and I hear the same thing. Reminds me of a wonderful evangelist I got to hear years ago named Vance Havner. You should read some of his stuff if you get a chance and can find it. When you read his writings, it’s just like sitting in front of him hearing him speak. That quality makes for very interesting and enjoyable reading, regardless of topic. And you do it very well. Keep at it!

    Praying you feel better soon!!

    • Thank you Kenneth for your prayers! I am seriously so touched by your kind words. I’ll definitely have to check out his stuff! Thanks for the recco! sending big big hugs xo

  11. 37,000 seriously that’s crazy amazing, so bloom-ing proud of you ❀️❀️ that’s more than double the population of my town πŸ˜‚ I genuinely hate going bed hungry, I have issues sleeping as it is without my tummy getting involved in keeping me up, though I’m dealing with a lot of comfort eating at the moment

    • Hi Benny! Thank you so much!!! Yeah, I definitely am with you on that one. Big hugs to you friend, have an awesome week! xoxox

  12. Good word! One of our mottos – changing the world one truth at a time. And as my mom would say, “Honey draws more flies than vinegar” so just be kind to one another. Thanks for visiting my blog too! Blessings!

    • Honest draws more flies than vinegar — love that so much!! Thanks Susan! Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks πŸ™‚ Yes, I would definitely have to agree!hugs to you, Megan! xox

    • Thank you so much Laura Beth! yeah – being sick is never fun πŸ™‚ hope you’re having an awesome week so far! Hugs and love xox

      • Good week thus far – Just busy with work, and it’s about to get expensive. We’re contracting with a local HVAC company to do all-new ductwork and two new HVAC units for our house. Oh, the joys of home ownership. But, it’s definitely needed since summer is coming!

      • Oh gosh – yes that is going to be an expensive house call. Yeah – a necessary one for sure! Good luck!! Hugs and love xox

  13. I hope that you realize that when you take the first letter of each of the three words composing your blogsite, (that is, BBB), and numerically transcribe, substituting the number of the letter in the alphabet, that is 222, 37 is a factor of that number. This may have an impact. But then again, maybe your God is bigger than numbers! Is he?

    • Thanks Stephen! Yeah I’m beginning to understand that! Haha Hugs and love xox

  14. Hope you’re getting better – enjoyed the post and advice. And congrats re all the success rolling your way (well deserved). God Bless.

    • thank you friend, I appreciate that. yeah being sick is no fun! Hugs and love xox

  15. I love #2 – β€œMake emotional bank account deposits.” So true! I think of this as “social equity.” Sometimes you have to give tenfold in order to receive one good thing in return. But some relationships are worth the investment.

    Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚

    • Thanks! Yeah my dad is definitely a smart man! social equity — i like that. Hugs and love xox

  16. Love these nuggets of wisdom! One thing my mom told me that inspires me is to never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something. We must believe to achieve. Praying you feel better! I’m battling sinus and asthma issues too.

    • Thank you so much Emily! I love that advice your mom gave you. so true! thanks for the prayers! Hugs and love xox

  17. I am honestly astounded at anyone who can get more than 300 followers, and you have 37,000! Bravo! Feel better soon!

    • awww, you are so kind to say that, thank you so much Kat! big hugs to you xox

  18. Awe, yayy congrats on 37,000! I hope you feel better soon and thanks for sharing some advice you’ve received. πŸ™‚ I always love reading your blog posts.

Off topic…but my boyfriend is Catholic and I consider myself to be a Christian.. (obviously Catholics are Christians but not all Christians are Catholic lol) anyways, sometimes I go to St. Stanislaus Parish with him. I really like it. I feel like I learn so much from his church. On the other hand, I really like the church I go to, New Life. I love how we shout, sing, and dance in worship for the Lord. I guess what I’m trying to ask is, do you think it’s acceptable to like both churches/ go to both? I really like the Catholic Church but I’m just not 100% on converting because I’ve already been baptized at a nondenominational Christian Church and I don’t understand everything about the faith. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for reading πŸ’›

    • Thank you so much friend!!! and thanks for your kind words. and thank you for your question – that is really is powerful topic. so you’re absolutely right – catholics are christians ((actually the OG christians if we’re really getting technical)) but not all christians are catholic. And there are definitely some pretty important doctrinal differences, namely the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. So, as a result, for Catholic, attending Mass vs a non-demoninational service is so important because it literally comes down to that specific fact: the eucharist. Now, I am a cradle catholic. Been going literally every sunday since birth. But I also have a deep love and respect for some of the other ways different denominations worship. Like, growing up, I went to a nondenominational christian summer camp for 8 years straight. I loved the singing and dancing aspects of the worship. I’m very musically inclined and I love the way different non-denomination churches really have music as a central part of their worship. So trust me, I *get it*. Compared to lots of those churches that really focus on “entertaining” the attendants (that sounds horrible, but I promise i don’t mean that in a derogatory way in the least) compared to those exciting and flashy services, the catholic mass can seem…well, boring, and outdated and blah. But I would just invite you to really read up on what is *actually* going on at the mass and the *why* behind the things that may seem antiquated…ie: the incense, the different things that the priest is saying, why we do the “catholic gymnastics” and especially, what is really going on with the eucharist. Some books I would recommend, are anything by Rome Sweet Home by Scott and Kimberly Hahn, (they’re amazing, and like “Catholic Rockstars” hah and actually personal friends of my parents.) This book is the gold standard of explaining the Catholic faith. Also: The Lamb’s Supper – again, by Scott Hahn, and Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of Faith. Okay – so all that being said, yes – I do think you can go to both! Absolutely. If I’m being 100% honest, I don’t know how sustainable that could be, given the time commitment that entails every Sunday. But more power to ya if you can make that work. I think a great solution would be to perhaps find a different parish, which I know can be touchy, especially if it’s one with a lot of family or personal history. But there are so many parishes that have a wide variety of “flavors.” The church I go to in NYC is full of some of the greatest musicians in the world, truly. And each mass is literally a concert. They sing all the upbeat, contemporary worship songs, have a rock band, and really make the mass come alive for my musically inclined self. However, they also offer services without music, or with a traditional “chamber choir” with like the monk-style gregorian chant. So really, there are so many different styles of masses, you can find one that is more exciting and personally moving for you! This is super long now, but I really wanted to share some of these things, because a) it’s something I’m seriously so passionate about because the catholic faith is so beautiful but gets such a bad wrap as being “boring” because it’s not always “flashy” and it’s full of tradition, but it really is awesome. And b) because my heart goes out to you, because I know this is something that you and your boyfriend are working through, and I know how much of a challenge that can be, especially to something that means so much to the both of you. Praying for you!!! Hugs and love xox

      • Ahh thank you so much for replying! πŸ’› I am going to dig into what the Eucharist really means, because it’s something I’ve always been interested in learning more about. Thank you for the book recommendations. I love reading, so I’m sure I’ll find at least one of those recommendations to be a good fit. As for the churches, next time I’m in the city, I’ll have to look up Catholic Churches. The one you go to sounds awesome. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for giving me resources, and for taking time out of your busy day to reply to my comment! I your blog so much, don’t ever stop writing πŸ’›

      • Absolutely πŸ™‚ Rock on, my friend! Thanks for saying that πŸ™‚ Hugs and love xox

  19. Great job on the 37,000! That’s impressive. I’ve had my current blog since 2012, and I’m almost to 100. No, I don’t mean 100,000! πŸ˜‰ I’ve obviously done a poor job of promoting!

    • thank you so much John! Hey, 100 is something to celebrate! that’s awesome! Hugs and love xox

  20. 37,000!! “I knew her when…” That is so fantastic! Kudos to you on your many successes!

Well, I TRIED to leave a comment on Monday, but I forgot to put my laptop in my laptop bag. In 15 years traveling, never been that stupid!! I left something using my phone, but I don’t think it took. Not terribly techy of me.

What i tried to leave was a saying of mine that grew out of a humbling experience in college: “Everybody is somebody’s jerk…including me.” Remembering that makes it a tad easier being patient with “jerks” and keeps me humble. Usually. Well, maybe part of the time.

I hope you are feeling better than Monday! I’m looking forward to seeing that interview with the folks from California!

    • Haha awww thank you Jeff πŸ™‚ oh no! I hope the laptop didn’t cause a headache on your business trip!! That’s a great piece of advice. Humility is a powerful thing πŸ™‚ thanks bud πŸ™‚ Hugs and love xox

  21. Hope you’re feeling better today! No fun. I love these advice quotes, so special that these words of wisdom came from your parents. And how wonderful is it that you’ve reached 37,000 followers??!!! SO great! Congrats! xox

  22. Concerning your Dad’s statement about “Sometimes it’s good to go to bed hungry” reminds me of a saying I heard in the last couple of years–“Sometimes you have to get comfortable being uncomfortable.” I do some work in third world countries and I have learned to be comfortable at being uncomfortable. Congrats on the 37k subscribers–amazing accomplishment. You touch a lot of lives with a positive message and a lifestyle that backs up your words.
