Sundance & Being a Christian in Show Biz

Whew. What a week.

For those of you who follow me on Instagram (@beauty.beyond.bones), then you are aware that I was at the Sundance Film Festival this past week!

Yep – my family was all together in Park City, doing some skiing, watching some films, hanging out, and doing lots of eating.

Plates of Melted Cheese — yeah, drooling!

I love when my family is together – there’s never a dull moment!

The Sundance Film Festival is such a fun time to be out West. NYC and LA converge on this cute little mountain town, and so all week, in addition to phenomenal skiing, you’ll get to see many up-and-coming (usually bizarre) films, people watch, and maybe even run into a celebrity or two.

While we were there, I saw Connie Britton (aka Tammy Taylor in Friday Night Lights) on the ski slopes. I passed Owen Wilson in the ski locker room. And Jason Momoa was staying in the townhome next door!

So that was definitely some excitement!

We also saw a couple films: Maiden, which was a fascinating documentary about the first all-female crew to race in the Whitbread Round the World yacht race.

Maiden’s Star: Tracy Edwards

And then Light from Light – starring Jim Gaffigan, about a husband who deals with his wife’s death by hiring a ghost hunter. Like I said — bizarre. Definitely thought that one was going to be waaaay different, given Gaffigan’s involvement, and the fact that it was touted as being a “religious” and “spiritual” film….right…

But I’m going to be really honest…being at the Sundance Film Festival, it brought up a mixed bag of emotions for me, as a Jesus-loving actor.

Having a film at Sundance is such a huge accomplishment. I have several friends from acting school who were in films that premiered at the festival this year. And the prestige and success that merits is something that – I’ve got to be honest – I long for.

And had I made different choices, perhaps the trajectory of my acting career would be along the lines of my peers, gracing the Sundance screens.

Because here’s the long and the short of it:

In the entertainment industry…it is incredibly difficult to be a Christian.

The opportunities I’ve had to turn down because the role compromised what I believe in — the list is a mile long.

Most secular films are created to push boundaries, make one think, be edgy, send a progressive message — and that’s great if that’s your thing — but acting in such films…is not mine.

And quite frankly this is a temptation that I feel like I am constantly being tested with.

Case in point: Earlier this January, you may recall that I went to the SEEK conference, presented by the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS) – a week-long, Christian conference, where I heard incredible talks and break out sessions, and I came home absolutely on fire for God.

Literally in the car on the way home from the conference, I get a call from my agent: I was the only girl at the agency selected to audition for a big, feature film, shooting this spring. I was asked to audition to be the love interest of a big time actor, who you would 100% recognize from a superhero movie franchise.

Here’s the catch — the role involved a nude love scene in the back of a car.

Talk about whiplash of emotion. Going from being on fire of God, ready to shout His message from the rooftops. To being thrilled beyond belief about the audition. To the crash and blaze of a fiery inferno, learning what the role entailed.

I turned down the audition without blinking.

And don’t think the timing was lost on me either. I know the evil one’s tricks when I see it.

But, that’s the thing. It’s a chew ya up – spit you out business. And they’ll take and take and take without even a second thought – even if it means stripping a young woman of her dignity, or the most intimate parts of her.

Now hear me out – I’m absolutely not passing any judgment on actors or actresses who take those roles, or anything like that. To each their own.

I’m just saying that for me – as a lover of Jesus, trying to live my life in a way that honors, respects and obeys Him – it is nearly impossible to do anything other than children’s educational videos or cat food commercials in the entertainment industry….which is pretty much, exactly what I’ve done.

But you know what? Sitting at those movies, watching actors and actresses – some of whom were my former scene partners – answer questions up on stage about their careers, and seeing the exclusive parties they attended on their Instagram feeds, I’m okay with it.

Sure, there’s a tinge of wistfulness. The glamour. The fancy dresses. The excitement.

But I feel an overwhelming sense of peace, that I know is coming from the Father, reassuring me that I am on the right path: His path.

I’ll just close with this final thought.

I was skiing by myself one afternoon, and riding the chairlift up with a guy, and we got to talking about our careers. And I told him that I was an actor from NYC. Naturally, he asked if I was in one of the films at the festival. I said no, and joked that I do commercials for cat food, and kids’ videos.

But then, I don’t know what came over me, but I heard these words come out of my mouth: “I’m actually a Christian, and so I choose to only take roles that align with my faith.

And the guy next to me actually took off his goggles so I could see his eyes, and he says, “Wow. I really respect that. Not many people live their lives according to what they believe. Good for you.”

I didn’t get on the chairlift that day thinking that I was going to evangelize or anything. To be completely honest, despite having this blog, I don’t usually bring up my faith to random people in “real life.”

But I did, and who knows. Maybe that guy needed that encouragement to live out his faith. Or maybe he was questioning the existence of God. Who knows. But I’d like to believe that maybe he needed to hear it.

So yeah – net net – Sundance gave me a new perspective on life. There are certain “accomplishments” that are not recognized by this world. And frankly, they are only truly seen by One. But it turns out, that those are the most important ones of all.

How do you make important decisions in your life?

Also – I’ve got an exciting announcement coming up in the next couple weeks! Here’s a hint: BBB was recognized for something!

  1. Sometimes I think wistfully of YOUR life. Great in Godโ€™s eyes and great in the worldโ€™s eyes are two different things. Just keep doing justly and loving mercy.

    • Thank you Lindsay, for you kind words. I am so touched. You’re right about that. hugs xo

  2. Kuddos young lady for your faith.

You may have your agent pester Mel Gibsons outfit about a role in the upcoming sequel to The Passion, the Lord may bless you there if you hadn’t looked that away yet.

    God Bless.

    • thank you friend. Oh gosh, wouldn’t that be amazing. I can’t wait for the sequel! hugs xo

  3. Probably a dumb question, but gotta ask…have you done much checking into the Christian film studios? Pureflix or the Kendrick brothers films (Sherwood Pictures)?

    • Thank you friend for this awesome question – i did a few years ago. I should follow up! That’ll be top of my to do list tomorrow! thank you! hugs x

  4. The world and all that is in it is passing away. You made the right decision, and you won’t regret it. I know you won’t! But it will always look so good. It just can’t ever deliver what God gives us, what He made us for. We have only just tasted of the goodness of God.

    • haha yes!! she looked gorgeous on the ski slopes! red hair flowing, and glamourous golden aviator sunglasses. total movie star!!!

  5. A big thumbs up to you. You stood up for your values. Thanks for blogging about this and sharing with us. It’s encouraging to us. May the Lord continue to bless you and watch over you.

    • Thank you friend!! ๐Ÿ™‚ You’ve really encouraged ME! so thank you for that ๐Ÿ™‚ hugs xo

  6. It is so cool that you honor God and you didn’t take that big role! I know God will bless you and bring a life changing role into your life where you don’t have to do anything that compromises your faith. That is really cool you got to share Christ with the guy on the chair lift. So cool you walked right by Owen Wilson to I would have given him a big hug a dude’s one of my favorite actors.

    • Thank you Ryan, so much ๐Ÿ™‚ I appreciate that encouragment – I hope so! i just long to do His will! ahaha yeah, he was really tall!! hugs xo

  7. Iโ€™m very happy for you on a number of fronts here. First, for being so tenacious about staying true to Jesus โ€“ not to your faith, but to Jesus โ€“ in your professional choices. Second, that you are at peace with it all. Iโ€™ve told about my coulda-woulda-shoulda momentsโ€ฆI know how tough it can be to be OK with not being โ€œup thereโ€ like your friends. So good for you!

Mostly Iโ€™m proud of you for that lift chair moment! Hopefully, that good experience will strengthen you to be more vocal about your faith outside of BBB. Not that youโ€™ll get a fun response every time, but youโ€™ll have the satisfaction of at least knowing that you brought Jesus up to someone, which is pleasing to Him. The more you do it, the more you WILL do it.

As always, you have my respect, my admiration, and my hugs & love!

    • Hey Jeff! Thank you so much for this wonderful encouramgnet. I can always count on you to be in my corner! ๐Ÿ™‚ Yeah – the peace was a cool feeling this trip. Having friends in films there — especially former scene partners — i was nervous how my heart would feel. The Holy Spirit really came through! thanks as always, my dear friend! hugs xo

  8. You will never regret the decisions you make powered by your Faith and God’s embedded “sense of North”… whilst the rest of us, benefit from you sharing them through your thoughtful prose.
    Well done.

    • thank you JP for your kind words. You’re right – that sense of North! hugs to you xox

      • I was trying to post a comment the other day and not sure if it went through but I am so encouraged by this post of yours! And one of the comments here actually gives me an idea for another blog post haha .It is refreshing to see people stand up for what we believe in and not compromise. And that definitely comes at a cost .Anything that is worth it often does. But God is your inheritance and you are definitely on the right path! Keep at it without growing weary and He will lead you to your goals. Much love sis!

      • Amen to that! Thank you so much Lisa, Iโ€™m glad this resonated with you! Hugs and love xox

    • wow, Matthew, what a kind thing to say. thank you so much. I really appreciate your support. hugs to you xo

  9. About making a decision, you must know from experiences with the likeminded, that people who encourage positive decision-making strategies sometimes say you have to limit the time you spend with naysayers. You might hear that newcomers can judge you by the company you keep.

If I am making an important decision, I think of counsel from people supportive of me in tough times. What an exciting post!

    • that’s really great advice. God definitely puts people in our lives that help guide us and keep us on path. Thanks so much for stopping by and taking the time to read! hugs xo

  10. You are one well mannered woman. You looked gorgeous with your clothes on by the way. It is nice that you chose the right path, and there will be a great reward for you one day.

  11. I have watched you make the good no the right better the Christ love response choices for over a year. Some may call you foolish or out of touch. To me you are faith-filled. Never forget God sees. Your fans and followers here may love you and your example. But Jesus loves you more. Good job. John

  12. Thanks again for boldly sharing your heart on tough issues. Let me just say, from my time in the biz back in the day, nothing has changed for faith-filled actors. I’ve worked with many from both coasts who have dealt with these choices. Actors of faith often shelve, cover, and deny their life in Christ when it comes to work. However, there are MANY who toss scripts for the same reasons you do. Many faith based films are produced, and are successful. You, as a believer, can work your craft. Scripts are being written right now for future shoot dates. So many choose to audition for these projects alone. Keep your eyes fixed. Proud of you. -Alan

    • Thank you so much for your kind words and support. Yeah, it’s a tough biz for sure, especially for those who believe. Thanks Alan – this has really encouraged me! I’ll reach out to those Christian film companies first thing tomorrow! hugs xox

      • Hey kiddo. Thinking more about some of the struggles you have slugged through, I want to invite you to read my new post. It’s my latest short story. I believe it will strike a chord with your life & the faith we share. Hugs from here. – Alan

  13. It is ironic to say the least that Hollywood is all behind the #metoo movement but then wants all their women to disrobe and reveal their flesh or wear see through clothing and then call it “art.” This world is just nuts. BTW, I saw Cardinal Dolan’s wimpy excuse for not using the power of the church to excommunicate. Just shows you that $$$ and pleasing people are more important than following Jesus.

    • It really is quite something, isn’t it?! Thank you Jefferis. Yeah, it is such a sad situation. hugs xo

  14. Wonderful post. Admire you greatly. I admit that as a black older woman, I question the thought processes of young women who want success so bad that they chance losing their sense of self playing parts that rob them of dignity and possible loss of integrity. I don’t really listen to Beyoncรฉ or Rihanna or any of the younger set, being more Gladys Knight and Aretha Franklin, but I cringe when I see them performing or at a function showing so much of their bodies, buying into the beliefs that their value and worth is in the skin. I want to say, “We have come too far to perpetuate the stereotypes for money and fame. Keep your dignity, and your integrity, because at the end of your life, you will have so few regrets.

    • thank you friend. I am so touched by your kind words. And thank you for sharing your heart. Your right – we all have an incredible, undeniable worth and value that is from the Father. hugs xx

  15. By following what Jesus wants you to do and live for him, you are touching thousands of lives with his love. That is a calling far higher than anything else. Think of this, at the Bema Seat when Jesus rewards you for your faithfulness to him, it will be far grander than any earthly awards show. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thank you friend. Gosh I am humbled and truly touched by your words. ๐Ÿ™‚ God is good. Hugs and love xox

  16. If you will study the book of Proverbs, you will quickly learn that to follow Gon and not mammon is the wise thing to do. You will be blessed beyond belief for it.

โ€œThe house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.โ€

  17. In terms of making decisions, I always encourage a strong prayer life. While that won’t make every decision easy by any means (and might make some decisions harder because what God wants for us may run into conflict with what we want for ourselves) it can certainly increase the likelihood that we make our decisions with the desire to honor God at the front of our minds.

    • Thank you Brendan. Prayer is such a great and powerful tool. Youโ€™re so right about that. So glad you stopped by. Hugs and love xox

    • I was actually about to write something along these same lines! I pray through decisions and receive clarity for what the Lord wants. Thereโ€™s an underlying sense of peace when one follows His will, like the feeling you have Caralyn. Itโ€™s still hard to โ€œacceptโ€ His will sometimes, but He always knows best.

  18. I have the utmost respect for you. It is refreshing to see someone so rooted in their faith. I always enjoy reading your posts. Young lady you are already a star!

      • Kind? I donโ€™t know about that. You earned the comment. You are so focused in your faith and you never seem to waiver. That says a lot about your character. God bless you for sharing your faith with us. I would wager that you have touched more lives than you know. Thank you for that.

  19. I don’t see it as you evangelizing on the ski lift, you were just being truly authentic. It’s so rare to hear that kind of truly honest statement these days – usually where people are trying to force authenticity (rarely will it be related to faith either..) its done laden with unspoken self promotion and the silent nod to holding superior virtue in order to score points. You were simply saying what your values were without there being any subtext. Thats what Mr removing goggles realised.. Thats authenticity

    • Thank you Charlie. I appreciate that. Yeah itโ€™s crazy – since starting this blog, itโ€™s become easier to let people in. ๐Ÿ™‚ I appreciate your support. Hugs and love xox

  20. I couldn’t help but be reminded about the last part of 1 Corinthians 10 while reading this. Paul writes that all things are lawful but not all things are helpful or edify. The problem he addressed at that point concerned the Corinthians offending non-believers. So I applaud you for your stance and fortitude concerning those acting gigs you mentioned. Such roles could easily cause offense. Cat food commercials, kids’ videos, and witnessing on the ski-lift, all of these things are worth far more when done to the glory of God. Great post!

    • Hi C, thank you so much for your kind words and encouragement. An audience of One for sure ๐Ÿ™‚ Hugs and love xox

  21. Always a great choice when your actions reflect your beliefs. Why do they have to put sex scenes in movies anyway? Back in the day they would infer but never show and it was way better – actors didn’t have be in compromising scenes and viewers didn’t have to get hit with something they really could have done without. Sound like you had a great time and made some great choices.

    • Thank you friend. I know! Iโ€™m with you on that one. Those are unnecessary scenes all the way around. Glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  22. So this morning I read this post, then did my daily reading. Iโ€™d got to 1 Samuel 8, where Israel rejects God and asks for a king so they can be โ€˜just like everyone elseโ€™.

Something clicked when I read that, their actions were a direct result of wanting to be a part of the crowd, but in doing so they rejected God – it must have been so painful for Him to hear them say that.

Well done for staying true to your faith in spite of the temptation, and thank you for the reminder to always do the same!! ๐Ÿ™‚ x

    • Oh wow thank you so much for sharing that with me. I had not read that before but wow so powerful. Thanks for the encouragement. Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks friend – yes I would love to be in Christian films! I need to find a contact for their casting department. getting auditions is extremely difficult. Thanks for the encouraging words! Hugs and love xox

  23. This is a message for me right there. Good to know you actually turned down a role because of your belief. I know it isn’t an easy path and I’m speaking as a Christian and one who also makes it obvious through her blog. There are opportunities that are not even presented to you because people know you and they know your stance. I’m glad you do not waiver in those circumstance and I am also learning to do that too. Thanks for sharing.

    • Thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement. So glad this resonated with you! Hugs and love xox

  24. I admire you and respect you for living by your values. And God will bless you for that! Jesus knows. I pray doors will open for films that you can fully support.

    • Thank you so much Susan. I really appreciate your prayers and support. It means so so much. Hugs and love xox

  25. I frequently wonder about the soul care of Christians in “the industry.” Toby Mac, Kirtk Franklin, & Mandesa put out a great song related to this (maybe 10+ years ago..!). Thank you for turning this role down. Keep pursuing Christ. Also, I was expecting to read a relationship update on this post…

    • Thank you friend. Yeah itโ€™s a tough biz. Haha no relationship updates here! Someday hopefully! Hahaha Hugs and love xox

      • Ha! I’ll see what I can do. We’ll have to wait for him to get back from working in Kenya. Anyhow, looking forward to the time when you can light up the silver screen in a Christ centered edifying movie. Has your agent reached out to David White?

      • Oh wow Kenya – thatโ€™s amazing. I havenโ€™t! But Iโ€™ll pass that name along! Thank you so much! Hugs and love xox

  26. I respect and admire you staying true to your convictions. As an author, I understand the temptation to wander even just a little from those convictions. But Jesus stayed true to the Father for me.

If you havenโ€™t already, I recommend you read Jordan Raynorโ€™s book, Called to Create. I think lays out very well the Christian standard for creatives.

PS I also will put in a shameful plug for any of my fictional novels. I think youโ€™d like Through the Valley of the Shadow. On Satanโ€™s Island is my favorite, but the heroine is naked.

    Douglas Knight

    • Thank you so much Douglas for your support. Thatโ€™s such a powerful perspective and way to look at it: Jesus stayed true to the Father. Wow. Hugs and love xox

  27. Sigh. As a writer, I hear you. In bookstores, “Christian” fiction is literally at the back of the store. I’m not sure why we segregate books, but that’s another story. It’s frustrating to work in the arts and be forced, by the culture, into the background, but I’d rather be limited now and please God than “successful” now and lose my soul. Keep the faith! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thank you friend. Yeah itโ€™s hard to battle against the secular culture that literally pushes God to the back. Thatโ€™s a great way to look at it. Hugs and love xox

  28. This is wonderful! You can have a wonderful career as a Christian actor. Candace Cameron Bure does. Lots of people do but she comes to mind first! She does family movies and sitcoms. Continue to stick to your guns and great things will come. There are plenty of amazing roles out there for you. Xoxo ๐Ÿค—

  29. Seconding what others have said, good for you. As I have no doubt you know, there are a lot of Bible verses that tell us that God’s reward will always trump man’s award for something we do here on earth. A couple quotes come to mind. One is from Denzel Washington (quoting his mom): “Man gives the Award, God gives the REward.” The other that comes to mind is from the hymn “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” which says:

    “I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;
    I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame.
I’d rather be true to His holy name.”

Keep running the race, as Paul said.

    • Thank you Monica for your encouraging words and support. Oh wow – I love those quotes. Thanks for sharing them with me! Hugs and love xox

  30. I have to stand up and say “Bravo!” This was a great post and it is something that I needed to read this week. Thank you so much for sharing! I am sure that the roles for you will come. And I also know that there are more and more entertainment companies out there than there used to be that create content that is wholesome and positive. And believe me, that is something that we need more of in this world. Maybe God is telling you that you are just the person to start such a company and produce the type of content that is in line with His Word and Plan. That would be cool. Keep up the good fight and God bless!

  31. Gosh, I love this so much. Kudos to you for standing up for your beliefs! It can be tough, especially in todayโ€™s world, but the fact that you didnโ€™t even hesitate to turn down that role that didnโ€™t align with your values says SO MUCH about your character. ๐Ÿ’œ

    • Thank you so much Jennifer. Iโ€™m so glad this resonated with you:) grateful for your kind words! Hugs and love xox

  32. What a powerful experience on a mountain top! You live for Jesus and God, and they are using you/working through you to do amazing things! In terms of making big decisions, I pray about it. Then, I talk about it. Having Al as my husband is so wonderful in this respect – He’s a wonderful listener, and then he normally takes my thoughts and offers advice and perspective by asking questions and helping me “unpack” certain parts of areas of it. Also, I recently started journaling again, and they had made such a big difference already! Writing things out is sometimes more helpful!

    • Thank you so much Laura Beth ๐Ÿ™‚ yeah it was definitely quite the experience! You and Al make such a great team. I love hearing about the beautiful love you two share! It gives me great hope! And oh my gosh i love journaling!! So glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  33. I would not make any comments to anything i did not understand. You are in command of all your situations. Where will you be in 10 years. I have found that empires have never survive without a little regret. Your decisions will make or break you. You, my friend, will not break yourself. Stand your ground for what you believe. That is the reason I am here.

    • Thank you so much for this powerful encouragement. It really means a lot. Itโ€™s exciting to think about what life will be like 10 years from now! I know God has a plan!! Hugs and love xox

    • I think youโ€™re so right about that, Matt. Thank you so much for the encouragement. Hugs and love xox

    • I didnโ€™t actually meet him, just saw him! But he seemed intriguing! Hugs and love xox

  34. I think more people than you’d expect (especially women) are searching for examples of your courage and conviction- I know I am! Was literally just pondering society’s obsession with money at all costs and sacrifices and this post restored some of my faith in humanity.

    • Gosh I am so touched by your generous words. Thank you so much for your encouragement. Yeah – it is definitely puzzling and concerning to think about societyโ€™s obsession for sure. Hugs and love xox

  35. God shows me again and again that He is still working in this world, when I hear the testimonies of young people like you. Thank you for sharing.

    • Thank you Donna, I am so touched by your encouragement. Yes! He is still working! Hugs and love xox

  36. GREAT exchange there on the ski lift. Glad Christ had you there as his witness, and that that other skier was receptive. I grew up in L.A., and every so often the news does a feature recalling the time when the great Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax, who is Jewish, refused to pitch in a key game because it fell on a Holy Day. Such signs of faithfulness are important and “disruptive” to conventional thinking – they give people the opportunity to think, “Hmmm… what do I value? What guides my choices?” And in those questions it is possible for the Lord to whisper an answer. May God favor you with roles that don’t call for compromise.

    • Thank you friend! Yeah chairlift conversations, although brief, can be so moving and powerful! Wow – thatโ€™s an awesome story. Thanks for sharing that! Hugs and love xox

  37. It is inspiring to hear how others are living for Christ. All the things we might miss out on in this world cannot even compare with the glory of knowing Him and being in His kingdom. I pray that the guy you told about your faith took it to heart and that it was a seed planted that brings forth fruit in his life. Nice job!

    • Hey Kevin! Thank you so much for your kind words. I will definitely join you in that prayer!! God is good ๐Ÿ™‚ Hugs and love xox

  38. If that doors not opening build your own house. You have a lot of experience you can share and open the door for others that want to be offered opportunities that reflect their values. The agent/broker/talent system has been toxic for a long time.

    • Build your own house. Thatโ€™s great advice. Thank you Kenzie. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hugs and love xox

      • I’m not the best compliment giver. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿค”You, have a good idea there. There’s, interesting things you could do with it. You know, without the inner conflict. I’d love to see a job board equivalent, where everyone is represented equally. That way, anyone can pitch a director that feels confident about what’s required. Sure. It would eliminate the lofty, awesomeness of chocolate covered, gold everything kind of jobs. It would also bring the ego down to a tolerable level that would be more competitive with the newer technologies. Insta. Twitter. YouTube.

      • I would fill the stereotypes in movies. Exchange student. Unknown Mexican. First brown guy victim #1. Soldier. Taxi Driver. Movies are definitely not the most diverse as far as art house or weird stuff. I love, weird stuff. It’s really true though, you make a choice and just, don’t be that guy. Literally. I can see the need for a love scene for a sense of intimacy between characters but in a car it has a different meaning. Even Julia Roberts didn’t do her own love scenes at first and she was sharing screens with the attractive men in Hollywood.

      • I still think, you should start your own agency. There’s others out there but it really does take a few to make an impact.

      • Oh. Open one of those fancy coffee places in Phoenix because I dislike Manhattan and cure Cancer while you’re at it. ๐Ÿ˜‚

      • What kind of generation is this? No beer or coffee? Everyone is healthy. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I don’t know, man the vices help break the ice. There’s gotta be some kind of vices. Miami vices. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Ben & Jerry’s vices. Hm. Maybe, you cut people off at the grocery line? Um. Don’t tell the next person the stall is out of toilet paper? You can’t be that great. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜

      • Sorry. Albany and Watertown were the beer capital of our country. It’s a, uh, civic responsibility. Now. Wachussett Brewery, even though they are in New England. I’ll forgive them for it. It’s the best stuff, ever. Better than cake.

  39. AMEEEEEEEEEEEEN…!
Your commitment and integrity and humility and faith – in an industry in which, next to politics, itโ€™s the most difficult to keep them;along with your soul) – are truly glorious. Christ loves you very much, I know.
I think you should start a Christian production company. You obviously truly enjoy acting and films – and the world is obviously in need of a subculture/counterculture in movies that supports and expands the presence and faith of Christians in the world. You have vision, creativity, intelligence, organizational skills, discipline, charisma – those are all shown in this blog… The industry has not been kind to Jim Caviezel and Mel Gibson… perhaps a creative way to go (and one that brings the spotlight to Jesus moreover) is a company that creates Christian-friendly content – and thathires actors and below-the-line talent who share your same faith, integrity, and hardships/battles, giving them support as well.
Maybe, if you were to get that ball rolling, youโ€™d cross paths with Jim and Mel down the line!
I myself have had a concept for a film with Catholic themes brewing in me for quite some time – the biopic of a minor entertainment personality from decades past who went down a rabbit hole and met a mysterious and untimely end…
    Just thoughts… ๐Ÿ˜‰
    God bless you, Caralyn!

    • Oh my gosh, thank you so much for this beautiful encouragement. I am seriously so touched. Those are certainly exciting thoughts! and how awesome about your film concept!! ๐Ÿ™‚ so glad you stopped by! hugs xox

  40. Good for you, Caralyn! It is difficult to live by your faith in the industry you are in. Temptation must be enormous. You however are showing your strength, HIS strength. Keep up the good work. ๐Ÿ™‚ You are an inspiration to us all.

    Eric

    • Thank you so much friend. Youโ€™re so right about that! Weโ€™re His hands and feet! Hugs and love xox

  41. Hey Caralyn, another fantabulous testimony from a Beautiful Sister in Christ. Your life epitomizes the Life Of Christ while He was on earth. He spoke Truth with a loving Boldness at every opportunity, as well as knowing when the enemy thought he could see a weak point and sneak in.
The phone call you received after your SEEK conference experience, when you were on fire for Christ, with Holy Spirit burning in you, was a definite temptation from the enemy of your soul, attempting to pull you down, and defeat the closeness of Christ you had.

Right after Jesus was baptized in water, He was tempted by the enemy, and had definite answers each time.

    Then Jesus was left alone.

    Matthew 4:7
7 Jesus answered him, โ€œIt is also written: โ€˜Do not put the Lord your God to the test.โ€™โ€

    Matthew 4:10-11
10 Jesus said to him, โ€œAway from me, Satan! For it is written: โ€˜Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.โ€™โ€

11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

The temptation that came at you Caralyn, was that phone call to see if career and money would become your god if offered.
Your quick, unhesitating response showed him your worship of a false god would not be bought.

As you continue to honour the True Triune God of the universe, He is pleased, and He will be honouring you.

    God Bless you Caralyn,
    Luv, ๐Ÿ˜€โค๏ธ๐ŸŒน๐Ÿ˜˜

  42. I can relate to this from a ghostwriting perspective. If I continued to write the books that pay really well, I could compromise my integrity but years ago I worked on a book that had a lot of curse words and sex and realized when I was done and got it where the author (in ghostwriting Iโ€™m simply the one who puts the words down on paper but they are the true author of the stories… like boom whispering I guess) wanted it that I no longer wanted to work on anything that didnโ€™t align with my own values and integrity. Itโ€™s been a difficult road financially since then but I know itโ€™s purposed and can relate to your sentiment, โ€œBut I feel an overwhelming sense of peace, that I know is coming from the Father, reassuring me that I am on the right path: His path.โ€

    • Thank you so much Shell for sharing your heart and experience. Yeah a difficult road for sure. Hang in there sister!! ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’›Hugs and love xox

  43. Having a lot of friends on social media who are glamor models, etc., I tend not to pass judgement on anyone. Their choice of career is their choice and for the most part, they try to make sure that it represent them as individuals.
I think that we as true believers have become far too judgemental.
For instance when a true gorgeous “super model” lady walks into church, I often notice that people tend to stare as if she doesn’t belong; even if she is dressed decently and modestly.
We forget that Jesus hung out with the worst of sinner and prostitutes; people who were of ill repute and he was judged for it too. The point is to hate the sin and not the sinner.

Yes, it is hard standing up for Godly principles in a world that grows increasingly wicked and if we’re not to careful, we find ourselves compromising on all areas of our faith. Watch and Pray that you grow strong enough to know the enemy’s schemes and are strong enough to stand.

Considering the kind of roles that you’re looking for, you’d do well in Christian movies. Perhaps get in touch with those who produced that movie “FireProof”.. That was a really good movie.
Of course most of the Christian movie circles are not Catholic.

My mom has been binge watching Hallmark movies. She finds them really clean, entertaining and most of all with some pretty good morals as well. Well for secular movies that is…
You could look into casting for some of those.

I wish you all the success in your chosen career. I know it is not easy for you, but God will reward you with the right roles and who knows… pretty soon, you’ll be a household name. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thank you friend. Yeah thatโ€™s true – everyone is on their own path. I will definitely join you in that prayer. Those are great suggestions. I actually emailed all of those outlets yesterday! Also – I hope i didnโ€™t come across as judgmental in this post because that was definitely not my intent, or position. Hugs and love xox

  44. Iโ€™ve learned that to really stand for something, you can’t stand for everything. This can be the most difficult choice in the world. But it frees you to be who you want to be. – Tony

    • Thank you Tony. Thatโ€™s such great advice. And youโ€™re right – very freeing! Hugs and love xox

  45. I believe God doesn’t look down on us with joy because we claim to be either this label or that religion. He looks with joy on us because we are followers of His Son Jesus and not just talk the talk but walk the talk. You walked the talk by refusing those roles. A Christian can be an actor of course and its possible to be choosy though being choosy may cost you a lot financially. Who cares! Our wealth is building up in heaven for us and we will have an eternity to spend it. And that wealth will not be currency but something much more valuable. You’re a good woman and worthy of the respect I have for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thank you Ian, thatโ€™s such a powerful perspective. Youโ€™re right – because we love His son! Hugs and love xox

  46. Thanks for sharing that. Glad that you enjoyed the festival but sad that you had to turn down a major film role. Deepest respect for sticking to your principles, better parts will come along.

    Regards

  47. Bravo! Great reading Sundance and Being a Christian. I was getting so weary of people who call themselves Christians but live their lives contrary to God’s word when I read what you wrote and I felt hope again. I know Christians mess up sometimes however, when our lifestyle reflects more of the world and less of God, then we have trouble. Keep on making godly choices and God will bless you for it. You are on the right track.

    • Thank you so much friend ๐Ÿ™‚ yeah – I have to believe that God will lead me where He wants me to go! hugs xo

      • It was a life changing experience for me. it’s only been a month since the conference but I am already on a different trajectory from before the conference.

      • oh it really was! gosh, i am so glad to hear that!!! i have found myself going back to FOCUS’ youtube page and rewatching some of the awesome talks!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ big hugs to you xo

  48. Having princples and sticking to them is never easy but I am totally for people who do. I did a quick Google search for Christian film companies. I don’t know whether this is any good to you.
    https://m.ranker.com/list/christian-film-production-companies/randolph
I recognised the producers of War Room which is a great film. Maybe you could start your own mini movie project. You could write the screenlay. Perhaps you have contacts who could help you. I don’t know how these things work but perhaps you could publicise your ideas on your blog and see if you can generate interest. You never know until you try..

    • Thanks so much for your encouraging words and for that resource! I really appreciate it! Yes! I actually reached out to them earlier this week after i published it. That is really a great idea!! Thank you!! Hugs and love xox

    • Oh gosh thank you so much, Rachel. What a kind thing to say. I would love that! Let me know if youโ€™re in nyc! Hugs and love xox

  49. Thank you for another amazing post…always an inspiration…and He leads me to read the right ones at the right time…to hear the message I need for THAT day. You’re much more influential in the WORLD than you think…speaking straight to the heart of a girl all the way from South Africa. And you didn’t even have to be a star in a major movie. He takes your message and beautiful smiling face where it needs to go. Xx

    • As thank you so much for this beautiful encouragement! I am seriously so touched! And wow – South Africa! That is amazing!! ๐Ÿ’› thanks for being so awesome. Hugs and love xox

  50. Thank you for this testimony about your faith in Christ. Very encouraging.

For anyone who wants to please the Lord in their life and career (not just in entertainment), opportunities to compromise our belief will always arise. Whether we take it or not is up to us. My prayer is that we all should always stand up for Christ.

    • Youโ€™re on a reading roll! Thank you again Victor, I really appreciate your support. I will join you in that prayer! Hugs and love xox

  51. Just yesterday I was reading about how the early church found certain occupations incompatible with their faith. Well done in your faithful obedience and recognition of when your job would fall under that! P.S. I had some friends (who love Jesus) who were at Sundance this year and loved it.

  52. Caralyn, It was always a dream of mine since I was young to be an actress, but seeing what it all often entails in reality deterred me from ever pursuing it. Yet, seeing your determination and faith despite it all is so inspiring to me. You are seriously a rare gem & a role model of mine. Thank you for being so candid about your journey <3

  53. Thanks for making this statement of faith!! As a blogger, I’m often tempted to seek the world’s approval before God’s: avoid mentioning Him explicitly when I tell my story, show a little more skin in my fitness posts, accepting collaborations with brands whose message doesn’t actually resonate with me… Thanks for being an example of integrity in a difficult industry.

    • Thanks Paola! I really appreciate your nudge of encouragement. Yes! keep being you and shining His light! ๐Ÿ™‚ hugs xox

  54. Really enjoyed reading this, congratulations for expressing your faith. I have been to film festivals in the past, they can be pressure cookers of temptation and false excitement, even when the films are good. Excited to hear about your career choices, and I hope you find a writer and/or director willing to tell a Christian story. Warmest wishes.

    • thanks Ted, yeah i know – i keep delaying the inevitable. and yes! Grappa is an amazing restaurant!! ๐Ÿ™‚ hugs xo

    • Thank you friend ๐Ÿ™‚ I appreciate your encouraging words! Yes! God is in control! hugs xo

  55. Its very inspiring to see you stand up for your principles / embody your purpose. Since the 1960s films have turned into a manufacturing industry that has even infected independent filmmakers and their artistry. Its a shame really. Hopefully you can find a feature that may live up to your ideals. Here’s hoping with you.

  56. I love your story. ๐Ÿ™‚It’s encouraging because sometimes I can find it difficult to be a Christian just in the day to day so I can only imagine the temptation that surrounds you in the entertainment industry! We’re always protected and blessed when we put on the armor of God. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thank you so much, I appreciate your encouraging words!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ means a lot. have a great night. hugs xo
