Blogging 101

Hey friends! Happy Monday! The sun is shining, we’ve got a fresh week ahead of us, and gosh, it’s going to be a great day!!

FIRST THINGS FIRST.

I made a video! I unboxed the FabFitFun Summer Box, and if you saw my Instagram Story, then you will know that I was — flipping out — over the contents of this box. It is far and away the best, FabFitFun box I’ve received yet. (Hello, Brazilian Bum Bum Cream!?!?!) I had an absolute blast filming it, so I would love it if you gave it a watch! And to order a box for yourself, you can get $10 off by using my code BEACHBABE.

OK — So. Last week…we hit a couple of milestones.

First: I booked two speaking gigs for this coming fall! I am beyond excited about that. This is truly where my heart is being called, and I’m thrilled and grateful to have those terrific opportunities. (And for any speaking inquires, you can email beautybeyondbones@yahoo.com!)

Secondly…I didn’t even realize it, buuut….WE HIT 43,000 BLOG SUBSCRIBERS!

I just want to say a quick thank you to YOU reading this right now. The fact that you would take a few precious minutes out of your day to visit my dusty corner of the internet means so incredibly much. I appreciate you, and want you to know how much I have enjoyed connecting through cyberspace, and truly making friends with some wonderful people.

And on that note, I thought it could be fun today to talk about anything and everything blogging! It’s one of my most frequently asked about topics, and even though I have an ebook “My Blogging Tips” — I thought it could be fun do an update on that, and answer some specific questions I’ve received.

The Number One blogging question I get asked, is “How did you grow your readership to 43K?

And as much as I would like to say, “Oh, it was just luck!” Or “I have no idea!” The truth is, I have learned a few things along the way that have really, I think, contributed to that growth. And again, I go into this in depth in my ebook…but here are 4 takeaways for this blog post:

1. Write with your audience in mind.

If you want to have a blog that people want to read…write what people want to read! Now, here’s what I’m not saying with that: I’m not saying…’Be inauthentic, blow a bunch of hot air, and don’t be true to yourself.’ No, that’s not it at all.

I’m saying, consider what people are interested in. What would make them want to read your article, and perhaps even click on another one? Because, sure — you may have the most adorable cat in the whole entire world, but let’s be honest — people don’t want to hear about its grooming habits in five blog posts a week.

#NotMyCat

Write about what you’re passionate about, but do so in a way that invites others to be passionate too. Make it inclusive. Make it inviting. Turn it into a shared passion, rather than a self-contained experience.

A blog, yes is an opportunity for self reflection and a free space for you to write about whatever the heck you want, but if audience growth is what you’re looking for, you’ve got to be mindful of people’s time, and write something beneficial to them.

Practical Tip: Post consistently. That way, people know when to expect your content, and will plan their visit to your site accordingly. (This is another way to respect their time.) For example, I post M and TH at 7pm, and a recipe on W at 7pm. *Consistency.*

2. Find Your Voice

This one goes hand in hand with the first. Because “writing with your audience in mind” does not mean that you have to “lose” your voice or disregard what matters to you.

Every person has a unique voice. It comes across in their writing style — Their self expression, perspective, and little quirks that come out without even thinking about it.

Find yours. And then let it flow.

Because here’s the thing — people don’t want to read something that they feel Siri dictated, or some AI robot came up with from a plug-and-play drop down menu of “Click-Bait Blog Articles.”

Your voice is what makes you, you. It’s what makes your articles interesting, and unlike anyone else out there on the internet. It’s what makes people feel connected to you, as though they’re talking to a friend.

So embrace it. It sets you apart, and will make people want to come back to hear it again and again.

Practical Tip: When you sit down to write, think about how you would talk if you were to pick up the phone and call your BFF, and write accordingly.

3. Pinterest is your best friend.

OK, this, friends…is my dirty little secret. That, quite honestly, I can’t believe I’m sharing about. I feel like I’m giving away grandmother’s fiercely guarded, secret spaghetti sauce recipe or something. But…Pinterest is such a HUGE traffic source that is largely untapped by bloggers. With our obsession with Instagram, Twitter and Facebook in recent years, Pinterest has all but fallen from people’s minds. However, it is an exponentially beneficial platform to put your articles on. Why? Because it is a search engine.

Consider it like Google on steroids. People use this platform (rabidly, I might add) – to find the answers to something: a recipe, decorating advice, fashion ideas, parenting help, etc. It’s a search engine. But then — people Re-Pin what they find helpful to all of their followers, who then can re-pin to their followers, who can then re-pin, etc. etc. etc. SO — a good article has literally an exponential potential of eyes to be had.

And here’s my dirty little secret — I can’t believe I’m sharing this. I use an app that makes it so I don’t have to lift a finger to do this. It’s an automated service called Tailwind. One day a month, I go through and schedule all my pins for the next month or so, and then it literally works while I sleep, and I don’t ever have to think about it again.

Since I started using it, my reach has gone from literally around 115 impressions a month, to over 550,000 impressions PER MONTH.

Yeah – it is absolutely insane. And I feel like I just divulged the family secret. But it’s because I love you guys so much and want the best for your blogs.

And if that’s not the greatest thing since sliced bread, you can also try it free for 30 days. Go forth, and prosper.

4. Remember, it’s not about the numbers

This is my final one – because at the end of the day, blogging should never be about the metrics. Remember why you started in the first place — You have a passion about something; You enjoy creative expression; You thought it would be fun. — Those have to be the foundation of why you’re blogging in the first place. Anything else will become a chore – and people will sense that.

Have fun. And enjoy the ride!

OK! I’m taking my own advice now, and considering your precious time, so I’m going to wrap it up for now! If you want more blogging advice — like the best times to post, posting frequencies, social media tips and community building…check out my ebook, My Blogging Tips!

My Blogging Tips by Top Eating Disorder Recovery Blogger, BeautyBeyondBones

FINALLY, finally — I received this question through my Instagram Story:

How do you think of content that people will like? Or do you just post what matters the most to you?

This goes back to my first point…I write what I’m passionate about, through a lens that will include and interest a broader number of people. Writing about my recovery from anorexia is what I’m passionate about, but that is (admittedly) a very very small niche group of people. So, I try to use my experience to open up a conversation that could be applicable to a wider group of people than just ED sufferers/loved ones. I try to find the takeaways from what I’m writing about that appeal to a wider audience, but tell them through the lens of my story — if that makes sense.

Thanks so much for reading, have a great day, and I’ll see you on Wednesday for a recipe post!

  1. Great tips! Thank you! I keep getting stuck on the first tip…struggling between keeping my blog mostly humor or mostly about a walk with Christ. Right now I am bouncing back and forth, depending on what I am feeling inspired to do at the time. My life is very Christ-centered, but finding humor in the ridiculous and silly circumstances doesn’t seem to be separate to me…it is part of the joy of walking with the Lord. But it does seem like I am writing to two different audiences and it is interesting to see the responses I get, depending on the type of post. Anyhow, thank you again…you explained it all very well!

    • Thank you so much!! Yeah i definitely feel that! And it can be both!! You’re so right – there is joy that comes from our walk with Him!! A fusion is absolutely possible. Keep writing!! 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  2. This is excellent. I was just thinking about how your reach is so huge, and what I need to do (if I even want to–not sure I have a coherent theme) in order to get such a huge audience. This made me think about why I follow you at all. You hit the nail on the head: Think of the audience and write inclusively. I never struggled with Anorexia, but I have struggled with other challenges, and insofar as I can relate to the long fight out of a deep pit, I got hooked. I am also Catholic, and the way you seamlessly and some might say boldly integrate faith in your posts is another big part of why I read your work.

I do struggle to find my “voice” but that’s part of why I write, to hone my writing skills. Sometimes I think what is missing from my posts is researched data/substance–but I don’t think that’s the case either. Comparison is indeed the thief of Joy, and if I keep comparing myself to the blogs I follow I’ll end up either with a blog that does the things others do, but worse; or so dissatisfied that I fail to write at all.

Your post has inspired me. Thank you.

    • Thank you so much Scoot!! You’re kind to say that. I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed reading my blog. Yes! The more you write the more second nature it becomes to just let yourself shine. And just from an outsiders perspective — I definitely hear your voice in your comments! It is strong, wise and thoughtful!! Be confident in it my friend! 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  3. I don’t need pins. I’m a shinning example of someone who just doesn’t care. I tried your bum cream. Now my bum looks great but the rest of me still a sun dried raisin! My jelly-fish likes it though; that and Don Ho’s greatest Ho Hits! :0)

  4. TWO speaking gigs this fall? How great! Congratulations!

I’m going to have to look into Pinterest and Tailwind at some point. I would be interested to see what kind of results I get. It would be an interesting experiment. Lots of good advice overall. Especially about the numbers! Very easy to get hung up on them!

Update – Julie may stay home with Hillary tomorrow. She’s shaky, which is normal after these episodes. And nervous.

Have a great evening and thank you!

  5. Congrats on the two speaking engagements! I was hoping God would open more doors for you to share, both on podcasts and at live events, so this is an answer to prayer. Awesome! Be sure to give us the details when you can. Looking forward to hearing all about them.
I recommend your blog tips book to everyone. I’ll not give away the content, but I got it last year and implemented a couple of ideas which greatly helped with how I work my blog. I’m in the process of changing some things on there, and when I do, I’ll be able to put more of your tips to good use. So, thanks! Great info.
And thank you for the prayers. They mean a lot. 🙂 Have a great evening!

    • Thanks so much Kenneth!! 🙂 I really appreciate that! I absolutely will keep you in the loop. And my goodness, thank you for that. Hoping that things are getting better! Sending big hugs xox

  6. Congratulations on the 43, 000 followers. That’s awesome and thanks for the tips too. I don’t know if I’ll ever get there because when I began I didn’t know there would be followers. I initially started because I loved writing my thoughts. But you’ve given great advice and I’ll try to put my stuff out there but not necessarily for the numbers 😉

    • Thank you Kerna!! You’re so sweet to say that 🙂 I love that so much — amen! It’s not about the numbers! So glad you stopped by!! Have a great night 💛 Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks so much! Ooooh yes – Pinterest is a home run hitter!! So glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  7. Thanks for sharing your tips. I’ve tried Tailwind before, from a previous post suggestion, and I had trouble navigating it. I even opened a Pinterest account, which I get lost in too (why am I admitting this out loud 🙈. I have been consistent, and that’s been helpful. Congratulations on 43,000 followers!!! You are such an inspiration ❤️

  8. Congratulations my friend. I think something that has also contributed to your blog’s success is that you share your faith in Jesus, so God blesses your blog. Just a thought 🙂

    • Thank you so much!! That’s a really beautiful thought. God is good and definitely loves to bless His children 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  9. I don’t disagree. Lots of good stuff here. I feel like I’m the most, me. The me, in real life. Which, is why I don’t follow anyone or have a bunch of friends. I don’t care. I know, you’re pursuing this as a career or side income like the masses hope to accomplish with their work. I don’t know. Its not me, in real life. I just, try to shoot for the opposite of disingenuous. Okay. End internet polling question. Now. 😳😂

    • Thanks Kenzie. Yeah real life authenticity is the best. Thanks for sharing that 🙂 Hugs and love xox

      • It’s named after the Sundance ski resort in Utah. But I don’t know how that resort got it’s name. I’m sorry to hear that.

      • Surprise surprise. Robert Redford owns Sundance resort. Appropriation happens, so often that we become indifferent to it. Although, it doesn’t mean we accept it. Just like the many mascots in headdresses at high school football games. The hidden genocide of my people hidden beneath the layers of suburban life. A need for the warrior but not the culture that surrounded it. That’s what the Sundance was about, the celebration of women and the many myths of creation within the plains and southwest tribes. I guess, Mr. Redford was just appropriating a name to stick to a thing and not the divinity of a people. Just like the many mascots that mock my culture.

      • I think it’s really sad. I wish we could just celebrate the culture and not have to appropriate it. Thanks for sharing that powerful perspective.

      • Thanks for all the great advice, Caralyn! I would love to grow my blog but technology intimidates me. In the past, I posted my blogs on Pinterest but didn’t see any difference. Now I’m trying again but still not seeing much change. So would upgrading my Word Press site help?

      • Hello! Hmm, I actually don’t think upgrading will have any impact, other than allowing for google analytics. In fact, when I upgraded mine I saw a significant DIP in traffic. But just keep at it! The more you’re out there, the more traction! Hugs and love xox

      • Thank you! I would love to see my blog grow but can’t seem to get there. Keep up your good work. Hugs and love to you as well!

  10. Congrats! You deserve this success. You have a very compelling and caring voice, but it’s also fun and gives off a humorous vibe. Thanks for sharing your tips! 💖

    • Thanks so much Paula! That’s kind of you to say 🙂 definitely self deprecating – that’s for sure!! Haha so glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  11. Congrats on the speaking engagements and the milestone!

As for Pinterest, I stubbornly resisted it for awhile, mostly because I often struggle to come up with images for my posts (and I would need an image for a pin). Well, I ended my resistance, and I’m pleasantly surprised with how much reach my blog has on Pinterest already! It’s probably too early for me to say it is a game changer but it certainly seems to have that potential for me!

  12. Love these tips! Consistency seems to always surface to the top 3 with pro-bloggers. I used to share my posts on Pinterest like 6-7 years ago and didn’t really see any benefit then. Sounds like I’m going to have to give it another shot. Do you have any tips on promoting comments within your blog? I usually end with an open-ended question. Any suggestions for me?

    • Thanks so much Brent!! Yeah consistency is key 🙂 oh yes! Def give Pinterest another try!! Hmm — yeah, ending with a question is a good idea! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Hugs and love xox

  13. “It is not about the strength in numbers, it is about the strength in Your passion”, it is good that you follow that because that’s what most bloggers miss after their numbers start increasing. It is also one of the reasons why most bloggers see You as an Inspiration. Congratulations on your achievements, there is still more to do and best wishes for that 🙂👍🏻⭐️

    • Oooh I absolutely love that quote!! You’re so right — passion is a must. People can sense it when it’s authentic! And gosh you’re really kind to say that. I am truly touched. Hugs and love xox

      • Hahaha, I just came up with that quote on spot! Feel free to use it 🙂(There is not any copyrights or rights to be reserved 😂) . Yeah, if our passion is genuine, then whatever is the rest takes care of itself. And You are welcome, it’s a pleasure to share, be kind and helpful ⭐️Best Wishes 🙂👍🏻

    • Thank you!!! Gosh you’re prayers are so appreciated 🙂 God is good! Hope you’re having a great week so far! Hugs and love xox

  14. Thank you for the reminder, Cara! I keep deleting months of posts at a time because I cannot get a handle on the theme for my blog. Art, Orthodoxy, politics, homemaking, etc. Also, I’m highly opinionated (in case you haven’t noticed). I want to be accepted as a neighborhood missionary (a program just like if I were going abroad but instead, I stay in my community). Neutrality is important with this sort of thing. I am NOT neutral about anything. I just went and restored the posts I had recently deleted. If a Christian organization wants to deny me access to their program because I am too vocal about Christianity, so be it. (I have not yet heard back from them but I’m leaving up my posts anyway.) Even if they say no to me joining them, I will still do neighborhood evangelism. God bless you my friend!

    • Hi Melissa! Thank you so much 🙂 that’s totally okay! You don’t have to be neutral! Own your perspective and own your story! Boldness is attractive! Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks so much Madeline!! I definitely am no where NEAR an expert, but I’ve picked up a couple things along the way! 🙂 thanks for reading! Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks so much Eleanor! It really is a terrific service! Glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

    • hahah thanks Tamara, it definitely brought a smile to my face:) glad you liked it too! hugs xo

  15. Caralyn, I just looked at Pinterest and Tailwind for the first time, and haven’t got a clue how to use them to publish posts. Do you explain how to in your eBook?

    • Hi!! I don’t go into it in my book — perhaps I will make a YouTube Video on it! Because it’s definitely worth the learning curve!!! Thanks for checking it out! 🙂 hugs xo

    • Oh my gosh, you’re so sweet – THANK YOU for watching! i had so much fun making the video hahahah 🙂 glad you enjoyed it! big hugs xox

  16. Congrats on your blogging success, sweetheart! Your inner (and outer) beauty really shines through your blog and that is why we all love it soo much!! 💖💖💖
I’ve also just begun to step away from Instagram to focus a bit more on Pinterest (and Tailwind)! 🤞
Feel a bit like I’m pressing all the buttons without really knowing what I doing. 🤯More research is needed… 😬Will definitely check out your tips! 😊

    • Aw thank you friend 🙂 gosh you are so sweet to say that!! THANK YOU!! And yes! Pinterest is such a huge blessing and powerhouse for traffic! Yeah – sometimes I feel the same. Stick with it!! 🙂 so glad you stopped by!! Hugs and love xox

  17. Oh Snap! Awesome post! Thank you for doing this! My following has been growing over the past weeks, which is awesome, 70+ subs now! Posts like these are helpful in reminding myself what it’s about! Thank you Thank you Thank you!

    • Thanks so much Peter! Oh that’s so awesome!! Congrats!!! 🙌🏼 Hugs and love xox

      • Thank you! I got an invite to do a editorial partnership which has been amazing! Just curious, how long have you been at this?

      • Oh that’s so awesome!! Oh gosh – probably about 4 years!!! Crazy huh? Time has FLOWN!

      • That’s crazy! What would you say was the game changer for your blog? Where you saw the most uptick, I guess.

      • Hmmm —- it really has been a slow and steady trajectory. The more vulnerable I made myself, the more connected people feel. It’s scary but at the same time very freeing. I think people are hungry for authenticity these days, and finding it is rare

      • That’s reassuring! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to shut it down out of frustration, but I kept going, because, I believed and hoped, lol, it would take off. It’s tough, because of who will read, right? I toe the line sometimes, but mostly to not piss too many people off, haha. I appreciate that speak your mind, it’s admirable. I appreciate the differing views that you share and the perspective you bring. It encourages me to do the same, though, I do hold back, I’ll admit, on some posts. 🙂

      • Thank you for saying that. Keep at it!! You’ve got this! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

      • Thanks! It’s a labor of love for now, maybe someday it’ll be labor haha! Hey, if you ever get a chance, I know you’re very busy, but, if you can give me any feedback on my site, I would be very appreciative! Anything, tear it apart, just don’t be too mean 😀 http://www.petescornerweb.wordpress.com . I plan to buy the domain probably next month, but, my kids keep taking my money !

    • Thanks so much Ian 🙂 I am definitely very touched and humbled for sure. So glad that you stopped by! I always enjoy seeing your name pop up! 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  18. You are literally so adorable! I enjoyed watching you open your FabFitFun box, thanks for sharing! On blogging, Monday…I know I can come to your page and read a new article! I am with you on Pinterest. I always post my articles there as well. It is an untapped promoter. Thanks for another great article, Caralyn!

    • Oh my gosh thank you so much Terese!! You’re so sweet to watch!! I had so much fun making that video 🙂 hehe and yes!! Pinterest is where it’s at! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 so glad you stopped by, my dear friend! Have a beautiful night! Hugs and love xox

  19. Great advice. Thank you so much. The Pinterest tip was a revelation. I use it all the time a kind of portable bookmarks feature and see a lot of interaction with my interests but I’d never made a connection between it and my blog. Makes so much sense.

    • Thanks so much!! Oh yes – Pinterest is a game changer for sure!! Hugs and love xox

  20. Congrats on hitting that milestone! I love reading your blog. It takes a lot of courage to share your story, and I appreciate how sincere and vulnerable you are in each of your posts. Keep on writing!

    – Katie

    • Thank you so much Katie!! You’re kind to say that 🙂 yeah – everyone has a story that deserves to be told! 🙌🏼 thanks for being such a positive source of encouragement! Grateful for you, my friend! Have a beautiful day! Hugs and love xox

  21. Thanks for sharing. Thankful for those who follow, and forget to express my appreciation. My goal, would be to get more comments, and am trying to work on that.

    • Thanks so much!! Yes! Asking a question at the end is a great way to start a conversation! Hugs and love xox

  22. Congrats and thank you for sharing! I know I need to work on posting consistently and will check out the tips you noted to increase traction on my site.

    • Thanks so much!! I hope they prove helpful to you!! Glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  23. When I decided to close my last blog of around 10 years it was tough to do. I pondered it for weeks and in the end there were many painful memories in those post. (things like the loss of my father.) The reality is my life has changed so much over the last 10 years. Writing is my true passion in life. When I closed the old blog I figured that phase of my life was over which was fine with me. Over the next few weeks I started by just observing my daily life. Things would come up and that is what led me to start this new blog. I am to the point in my life that if some of the nonsense I have gone through can help others then that is fine with me. You are right about the numbers. When you write you just have accept the fact that what you write may touch one person, a thousand or nobody. The biggest change I have seen is just the shear volume as compared to a decade ago.

    • Thanks so much for sharing that. You’re so right – that passion and purpose has to be there regardless of the the numbers! Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you! Gosh what a kind thing to say 🙂 yes! Not about the numbers-for the passion and fun! 🙂 Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks so much Natashya!! I’m so glad you found this helpful! Hugs and love xox

  24. Thanks so much Caralyn for these blogging tips! Sound advice, must say😊 I enjoy reading your posts. Thanks again for sharing!! God bless!

    • Thanks so much!! Congrats on starting your blog! How exciting! Can’t wait to check it out 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  25. Congratulations on your milestone beautiful <3 And, your speaking engagements…fabulous for you <3
Great advice. Thank you for your input 🙂

    • Thank you Jackie! I so appreciate that! Yeah exciting things ahead! 🙂 big hugs to you xox

  26. Thank you for writing this. I’ve been blogging for almost ten years now and sometimes you just need reminders of the basics of blogging.

    • Thanks so much Amanda! I’m so glad this resonated with you! And 10 years – that’s awesome! Hugs and love xox

  27. Bookmarking so I can come back and read. I have your book on my list to purchase this summer. I blog for fun and love how the growth has been this past year. I would love to get to a place where I can help more people become more creative and enjoy life fully so every tip helps!

  28. This is the second WordPress post I’ve read this week that mentioned Pintrest in a blogging tips publication. I wish I liked the application more. I like that you shed light on the passionate-practical balance. It helps to remember why you started writing in the first place. It looks like you do a lot of supplemental work as well including affiliate marketing, sponsorship, book publications etc. I’m sure that provides an excellent cross reference for exposure. Happy Blogging!

  29. I want to say thank you for your beautiful tips in blogging. I must say that my blog hopping was turned into a meaningful reading. Honestly, I can’t stop reading this Blogging 101 post you had because I got curious and everything. Pls visit my blog too and leave me a quick tips on your comment.

    • Hi Vanessa! Oh gosh, I’m so glad to hear that it’s been helpful to you!! 🙂 hugs xo

  30. Thank you for the tips! Don’t mind me. I’m just binge reading your posts 🙂 I’m excited to have found your blog! I’m going through recovery right now, so I feel happy that I’m not alone.

    • Hi Mignon! Thank you so much for reading my posts!!! So glad you’re enjoying them! Cheering for you in your recovery, warrior! big hugs xox

  31. Your post is very helpful and I am thankful to learn from it. I am a junior at Bluefield College in Bluefield, VA and my recent assignment was to start a blog. I have never done such a thing before so I feel a little lost with it. I will keep your advice in mind and hopefully become better. Thanks!
