Hello friends and happy Monday!
I don’t know about you, but it seems like a lot of life has been lived in just these past four days, since Thursday.
Just a quick note — I wanted to share a podcast episode that I was interviewed on! It’s called Fireside Talk Radio, and this first episode (in the two-part series) dropped this morning. Alright onto tonight’s post!
Confession: last Thursday, when I was flying back from Utah to NYC, in addition to writing that emotional blog post, I also did something not great on the plane…
I was evesdropping.
Ugh, I hate to admit it…but hey. It was a silent plane, and these two men – sitting directly in front of me – were having a lively conversation, and just putting it out there! So it was harder not to listen, than to listen…if that makes sense.
Any who…my interest was piqued because…the conversation was about God.
Now, let me just set the scene here…these two men did not know each other. The one — we shall call him the evangelizer…was probably about 60. Wearing what you’d find at a wilderness convention. There may have been a fishing hat/fishing vest involved, I can’t be too sure. Definitely some facial hair. And hiking boots.
The other man — we shall call him the evangelizee — was a young New Yorker. Late twenties. Handsome. Dressed to the nines in a crisp white button-down with –either avocados or giraffes — all over it, a la J Crew, in a size that was definitely too small, but showed off his biceps, leaving no question that this man worked out. In other words, I for sure noticed his entrance. Especially because he gave me that “look” when he sat down — you know the one. The sly smile that basically begs — Please, enjoy the gun show, muh-lady.
OK – so now we’re caught up.
Anywho – during the flight, wilderness man was talking to biceps about God.
And – I’m going to stop with the witty nicknames now, because it actually was a powerful moment, that captivated me for much of the flight.
But there was one exchange in particular, that really struck a chord with me — to the degree that, well…it’s stayed with me until now…four days later.
The older man was talking about God, and the younger man said, “You know, I’m spiritual, and I’m cool with that…but I just don’t know if I can believe in an actual God. Your God of the bible and all those stories, and organized religion…it’s just too much for me.” And with that, the younger man got up to use the lavatory, and came back with his airPods in his ears for the remainder of the flight.
And it was at this point, in the whole episode, that I realized that I had been experiencing a very personal matter, for this young man. And perhaps, I should have put in my own ear buds and butted out of the exchange.
But nevertheless, here we are.
It definitely made me think. The whole “spirituality” verses “God” argument has been hotly debated, especially in this new age realm of today, where people put more faith in crystals and horoscopes than in anything coming from “church.”
And frankly, I get it. I can see the appeal. A desire to become a higher version of yourself, escape the chaos of reality by emptying the mind, and trying to tap into your spiritual self — listen, that sounds absolutely marvelous.
That journey to self-peace, and finding abundance, and centering yourself in gratitude — is truly beautiful.
And if we’re being honest, a vibrant prayer life includes all — well, most — of those things.
But here’s where they differ.
God loves you back.
And that is a scary thing for a lot of people. Myself included.
Spirituality is a one-person-show. You tap in, you tap out. You are the curator of the experience. The self-betterment. The self-discovery. The self-awareness…it is a singular, contained, episode — which, is great — but you’re on an island.
With God, it’s not about the take…it’s about the give.
It’s about giving yourself, your time, your heart, to the God who loves you enough to die to save.
It’s a relationship.
And I think that’s where the approach avoidance comes in, with a lot of people. Sure, maybe I’m playing armchair psychologist right now, but I think that closeness scares people.
Maybe it’s due to past relationships that left wounds, or a belief that one is undeserving of that love and closeness, but the truth is –by opening your heart to God, it will change you.
His love changes you.
You’re no longer in a controlled environment where you can determine the degree to which you let go, or feel peace or ground your mind. No. An encounter with God completely takes you out of control. You are thrown into the ocean of His love, and you just never know where the undercurrent or the undertoe is going to take you.
You surrender that autonomy. That control over outcomes, and emotions, and frankly, the protection of the wounds you’ve been botting up or hiding away because it’s safe.
God is not safe.
He shows you a mirror, and gently brings to light those difficult things that need redeeming, so you truly and fully can become that higher version of self, that so many are seeking.
But you don’t get that through trying to empty yourself.
You get it through filling yourself with His unending love.
Bicep man, I felt for him. I mean, heck — he was just getting on a four hour plane ride, probably not expecting to have a philosophical debate when all he wanted to do was sleep. Especially not with sneaky little ears listening into such an intimate conversation.
But perhaps wilderness man was able to plant a seed in his mind.
I was frankly stunned that in 2020, someone would have the nerve to talk about God and evangelize on an airplane of all places, where you’re stuck next to the person for the next several hours, should things not go so smoothly!
It is easy to do life alone. It is much more difficult — and simultaneously more fulfilling — when we invite another in to do life with us. Especially when it comes to God.
Because with Him, we can do the impossible. We can change our situations, and our hearts, and even, change the world. And that is a terrifying thing.
“This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

Hope you had a great time in Utah skiing and now back to a “normal.” 🙂 I think talking about being a ‘spiritual’ being is an interesting start, as opposed to God, heaven and hell, or even Jesus. Deep down, we are all thinking about the meaning of life which becomes a spiritual matter, not a political one. Some people will repress it; some will ignore it after a brief moment of shock, some will turn to religious activity, and there are others like us who want to know this invisible God of grace
It’s interesting both men just got on with the flight; tune out each other, and then never revisited the question later. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. We may never know. 🙂

We were created with a built in need for socializing with God. It’s like a healthy family where each member loves to be in communion with the rest of the family. Well originally newly created Adam and Eve’s family concept went far beyond father, mother and children. By the fact God is father to all of us throughout the universes we are family. There’s that inbuilt need to connect but satan got in the way and convinced the majority we don’t need that connectivity because we are unique and in many cultures we are god and just need to look within to find that out. Worship is the realization we have a heavenly Father. Fellowship is the family principle in action. I feel sorry for Mr New Age because he has that realization there’s something out there to bring him the feeling of family and acceptance but satan has convinced him the substitute of money, power and mind besotting constant round of pleasure fulfills his need.

In my case I had seen a post on Facebook referring to those family members we have lost and not noticing that the post came from a mediums page I shared it thinking of my late father. I think my January 29 article, #MeOnly, perhaps touches on part of the problem. It was based on a London daily Mail article about millennial attitudes – Relationships are Over-Rated. All the reasons for this attitude from many millennials have to do with not wanting to have to make adjustments for other people. I found a quote to go with the article; “Selfish people often mistake selfishness for strength. It takes no talent, no intelligence, no self-control, and no effort to sacrifice other people for your ego.”
…people put more faith in crystals and horoscopes than in anything coming from “church.” Takes no talent, etc. to be the god of your own world, eh? Biceps sounds like he might be a bit full of himself. There’s no room for another boss. He might think he’s spiritual and fulfilled, but his may be nothing more than a religion of stroking his own ego. “I’m so grateful. I’m so fulfilled. I’m so spiritual…etc.”
Giving in to God means Him and others first. That’s a tough one for many people to swallow these days. I may be off here. You were there. Just my reaction.

I’ve had some really interesting airplane convo’s myself…including to a young woman who had been abused, and was still so full of life and love for her family. I gave her my grief poetry book, cause even though mine is about baby loss, grief is grief. It was a touching encounter, and one I’ll remember.

Ah. God as a mirror. So much not a popular thing It’s why so many would rather see him as a kindly senior citizen. But the mirror shows our need for the redeeming sacrifice of his son Jesus. Loving he is – so loving he gave his son to do for humans what they could never do for themselves. I continue to be amazed how God keeps putting you places to provide inspiration for these messages. I enjoyed this post for a few reasons. First of all, it’s normal to overhear conversations especially on a plane and I personally don’t think there’s anything nefarious in it. It wasn’t like they were discussing something private in hushed tones. It’s a normal human reaction to be curious when you can so clearly overhear a conversation.
Secondly, as both a spiritual person and someone who believes in God I want to correct you on your one sided opinion that you believe spirituality is. It 100% is not. It is a give and take with the Universe on a personal level. I have been communicating with my Nana who passed 15 yrs ago. She sends me signs all the time. If you pay attention, there is a definite synchronicity to life and signs are everywhere. Nothing is one sided.
If you believe that everything is energy, that can never be destroyed. Our spirits go on and on. I do believe in a higher power, a force greater than myself. I believer God created everything. I also believe in my birth chart, the alignment of the planets the day I was birthed. I wear Crystal’s and meditate with them. I have a realization of self and a higher consciousness. None if these excmude me from God or the love of God.
I just took offense to the one sidedness statements. Everything is a mirror, flowing, a back and forth. People who are spiritual aren’t choosing one or the other. Perhaps these have been your experiences and you are welcome to your opinions. I just wanted to state and share my truth, a woman who believes and encompasses both along her journey. Thank you. How sweet are you, no need to apologize! I so enjoy an open dialogue about this topic because I have friends who practice many different religions and believe in different Gods. I was raised as a Catholic yet I don’t follow or practice any organized religion today in my own life. I do however believe it’s more…morecyhan just one or the other. I choose to encompass all aspects of it. I believe that you and my other dear friends believe in something that works for them. I still go to church with my parents when I visit them because they like that I attend and it’s like I tell my sons, church can’t hurt you. Just talk to God in your own way. Yes, that is why I read and enjoy discussing all kinds of different topics with differing opinions. We must all learn to get along, agree to disagree because wars have been fought over beliefs. Some comments on here, I think you know just whom I mean, are a tad too harsh. There’s no reason to come down on a stranger for their views. One of my favorite quotes is from “To Kill a Mockingbird”…. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” I use this quote in my daily life in order to show tolerance and love to my fellow humans. No matter what we believe in all deserve love and kindness.
I so agree – we are all figuring out this life and on a journey together, and i think we should build one another up, and seek understanding and mutual respect 🙂 love and kindness for the win!! 🙂 have a beautiful week xx

With God there is no lukewarm when it comes to belief, Jesus said the Father prefers you be hot or cold, that you believe or you don’t!
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
What you are saying is hypocritical and false belief in the Creator of all things and a mockery, New Age Nonsense, your own concoction or amalgam of mixing truth with lies; and the father of all lies does that all the time. I recognize it immediately because I’ve dealt head on with the beast and in so doing one learns quickly that its absolutely true God is constantly calling us to follow Him, all the while the serpent is looking to distract or devise any trap or snare he can to prevent that! This modern era is riddled with his snares and you are partaking of such! It’s not some harmless goings on as you would have us believe but is actually blasphemous and transgression from God! Walking into church doesn’t prove a damn thing! The devil does it all of the time!
No one can lay claim to who Jesus said he was and did, there is only one true God Almighty the Father, and there is only one Jesus Christ the Savior, who is the only one who will provide judgment and redemption to a rebellious world and people!
Many of you here are playing games and having your social hour of meaningless distraction if you aren’t putting “Jesus Christ” FRONT and CENTER! This is the only take away from Caralyn’s perhaps bearing witness or putting her nose in someone else’s business or troubles, and if God wants us to learn then I know in my heart what I’m saying here is the only message I should be concerned with in any of this chatter.
It was an experience that clearly points out how in these Latter Days many are doing their own damn thing but there are faithful still scattered throughout to give all who will be obedient to His everlasting Word, the time they need to go Right or Left!
Mr. Biceps obviously has his mind made up; he stated and made that perfectly clear!
Are you doing the same?
One other important fact; there are many fake Catholics and indeed not just some of them are pretending to be faithful or true believers; because all Christians should be on guard, as any church has been and is being infiltrated by the wicked attacks of the devil.
I believe conscious contact with the divine presence, also know as “love,” is the ultimate goal for us as humans, and if it isn’t, then what is? Ultimately, True Consciousness/Divine Presence/God is “love.” The task is to find our love. God is Love and when we love we look in the face of God. Love must always precede knowledge. The mind alone cannot get us there, which is the great arrogance of most Western religion.”

I can’t believe this! You talk about a small world! I was talking to my friend Devin over the weekend and he told me about his flight from Utah to New York, and how this wilderness man was talking to him about God.
Okay, not true, but I had ya going didn’t I?
I have been listening to Shawn Bolz ( https://bolzministries.com/ ) and he talks about, as those who know God, can get a word for someone, anyone. They are instantly intrigued because they know we don’t know them. Shawn says that having a word for someone is the fastest way for the heart of God to connect to the heart of the individual. They will listen to you after this.
I have experienced this personally and it does work. It changes things from evangelizing to simply sharing the love of God.

The wilderness man and Mr biceps 😃.
I used to be scared of walking up to strangers and speaking about God but now, I just do it because it feels so good and rewarding thereafter. Sometimes, I ask the Holy Spirit to tell me something about them and once I say this to the person, they immediately get drawn in. God truly does love us back.

I think it was Kabir who said:
“When we think of God, there He is, but when we think there is no God – away He is…”
These simple words have surely an impact on our own opionion, with which eyes we see the world…
Nowadays we are so much influenced by the media and also eduction that money and title, reputation and prestige should be everyone’s goal, should even be our purpose of life – this is done in such a way that people have lost their real goals, are confused and thus cover up their insecurity by covering it up through many distracting means – we are not willing to get to know the truth? and remain in our old habits? These two gentlemen spoke about God: One trying to convince the other – even this will surely fail if it is done to missionize someone without living up to his own words. Means we have many things to tell in theory, but when the practice is lacking, all our words are empty. As God is love, our heart can speak about Him with love and love goes straight into the heart, become living words – these words will be fruitless when it is only spoken on the level of the intellect, then this discussion is just an interllectual wrestling: arguments and counter-arguments – in the end such a discussion ends in a conflict with an unpleasant aftertaste. So what should be our real goal? To reflect God’s love in us, to adopt His quality of love in us, to understand that we are from the same essence as that of God (as soul is love too), and to understand our own mind, to rise above the own battlefield of god and evil in us, to get to know ourselves; where we come from, what we are, and where we have to go, – this in fact is spirituality: “Man know thyself” or with the old words in Greek “Gnothi seauton” – then love will speak, no dead therory. This is also called: a heart to heart talk as it is filled with love. You became a witness of a dialogue of the mind, not of the heart, dear friend. And I like that it made you think about it, to reflect on it – the more we analyze a situation, the deeper we dive into the Ocean of consciousness.

Mr. Biceps answer is clearly one that is the most prevalent among young people today. They are willing to believe in the healing properties of herbs, crystals, etc., and delve into a spiritual plain, rather that talk about anything that requires a serious commitment.
Let’s face it. If you talk about God or any religion, it involves some kind of commitment; a commitment to a set structure of rules, laws, etc. In short, right and wrong isn’t up for debate. It’s there in black and white and let’s face it, our free modern society can’t handle that.
The modern world wants to be their own masters and don’t like being told what to do. If Mr. Biceps tomorrow decides that he wants to be gay and take up the excuse he is “born that way”, he can. He doesn’t have to deal with the consequences of sin.
The fact of the matter is that the Mr. Evangelical, did the right thing because a seed has been sown. Whether it will germinate, depends on a number of factors.
We are called to evangelize whenever we can, but for the most part, we don’t because all we will receive is Mr. Bicep’s answer. We’re tired of hearing that.
However we Christians are going about it all wrong. We’re thinking about it all wrong. Our job is to sow the seed and let God take over from there.
Bringing souls to Christ doesn’t need to be this daunting task or burden that was put on us by God. So what if it is a burden.? Christ died for Mr. Biceps as much as he did for you and me. But we need not think of it as a burden. That is like CNN making a grumpy face every time they have to report something uplifting and good.
If the two men did not visit the conversation further, don’t worry about it. Don’t be surprised that you will see Mr. Biceps in Church one day, Caralyn. I know you won’t forget his face; especially with those biceps. LOL

There has been a war going on in America since the 60’s and we are living in the damage that has been caused by it. Like many things- besides religion, people are believing the lies and not seeking out the truth for themselves. Kudos for Wilderness man. He planted the seed. I pray one day another good, and faithful servant will reap the harvest for Christ.
In my experience becoming Orthodox, no one talked to me about it. I was lead here by the Holy Spirit. God already has Mr. Biceps next encounter planned. In my head I see him thinking, ‘man… ever since that plane ride back to the city, things have been weird.’.

Jesus is the stone that causes many to stumble and fall. Like you said, spiritual people love to do their own thing, they don’t want God changing their plans, or worldly desires. You said it so well. Good job! Being spiritual and being godly, a person after God’s own heart, are two very different things.

The idea of surrendering the ‘ego’ self to allow space for the real human, that being connected to God, was one of many profound lessons.

I really do hope you find this book and any of his writings. I discovered him while attending a course on him given by a wonderful Sister at St Mary’s College across the street from Notre Dame. He became a mentor of sorts for me, one whose wisdom I sought out in times of need, but too often hid from. As I read Augustine’s Confessions now, I see a direct link between them through their teachings on God’s Grace and the necessity for us to be willing to set aside ego to allow Him to enter us and make us whole.

This was awesome.
One of my favorite memories ever was coming home from a trip delayed at the airport … had to get a new flight … but then I was seated next to a girl who asked if my Bible was King James and I said yes. She then shared her testimony and we talked for two hours straight non stop laughing sharing and praising … never met this girl in my life but I think of her often. She hugged me when we landed and I think of her every day almost.
She was a drug addict who was saved the year before and was visiting family for the first time in 4 years.
I’ll never forget that or her and it was the perfect ending to my solo trip I took to Grand Canyon with God. ❤️

Well written and so diplomatic, yet truth. It is so sad how many of us walk away from a God who is all loving so much that he gave his only begotten son. How can you not believe in a God like that? The Psalmist writes, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained,What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, And You have crowned him with glory and honor.You have made him to have dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, (Psalm 8:3-6) Who could not believe in a God like that? Ha, whelp thanks for liking my post cause it led me to read a couple of yours! Unfortunately I was or probably still am bicep guy (w/o the biceps). However, and probably luckily, I married a woman whose mother is very religious. She is the most compassionate woman I have ever met. Her capacity for kindness gives me shivers. Addition to my MIL my wife and I have started to read a book together that is rooted in God and the Bible. It calls for me to lead us in prayer a couple times a week. Honestly I thought prayer and meditation were the same thing. I realized I had NEVER prayed. I was so scared to do it. I found it odd that I was afraid to mess up a prayer but I didnt neccesarily believe in God. We’ve been reading it a couple weeks and my prayers have become more natural and I actually find myself praying on my own. You absolutely nailed it, spirituality is rooted in self. Prayer is rooted in God and the two are VERY different. Thank you for another great post.

Greetings and I know it’s been a while since I’ve commented–busy life gets in the way with things such as church leadership, new job, and other things that prevent me from writing and reading 🙂 On this post, it is hard to commit to anything, above all a relationship. Anything that requires us to remove us from our throne is difficult to commit to. God requires that of us–to give him control over our lives and hearts. And honestly, the evangelizer seemed to give up the moment the evangelizee pushed back even a little. To be fairly honest, the generation of believers before and now this generation of believers never put much stock in pursuing theology which is also the knowledge of God–which is the ultimate pursuit of any believer–to get to know God and enjoy Him forever! And on the part of the evangelizee, I can see the apprehension…the Body of Christ constantly screws up! But as my favorite Bible College professor once said–any time you get a group of reformed sinners together, they’re gonna screw up eventually. Anywho, hope you’ve been well and I hope your mother is doing better! Sorry I lost track! Prayers out to you and your family!

I have to report that I take umbrage regarding your sweeping generalizations regarding spiritual people. Having spent 45 years engaged in a spiritual practice, meditation, having had deep connection with the Divine all of my life, with God and Christ. for myself and others like me I feel slighted. I don’t like being reduced to the lowest common denominator.
I have heard there has been a kind of fad amongst many that seek “mindfulness” that may subscribe to some of the elements you have described. However, I expect more from you as a public figure and leader in the Christian Faith to set an example of the highest integrity to treat others with respect – like Mr. Biceps for example. You know nothing of his spiritual leanings really, you are assuming aren’t you? Is this the Christian thing to do?
I am disappointed in you and feel sad that you appear to be treating “spiritual” people in an assumptive and judgemental manner. I do know that its most likely not your intention to assume as you would not like others to make assumptions about your faith (as I’m sure that many do).
I have been moved by all of your blog postings except this one. It seems out of character for you. I feel sad that you have fallen prey to the divisiveness that is – well everywhere. I am not a church goer and I believe in God, Spirit and Jesus Christ having been touched by Him at the early age of 4 as I have previously described and I have had a spiritual practice for 45 years.
Hi Kai, I’d like to apologize that my words offended you. I meant no judgement when talking about spirituality. I have many many friends who practice spirituality, and I fully support their journey. Perhaps the tone that was coming across was the passion in my heart for the role that Jesus has played in my recovery. During inpatient, we were given many “mindfulness” tools to implement into our healing, and I found they all were empty for me personally, without Jesus. I fully appreciate that that was just my experience, and that for others, it may not be the same. I am happy that you’ve found such a positive tool in spirituality. People love spirituality so long as they are in the control seat, “they are God.” Christianity means the continual death of “self” and selfish desires that cause many to cringe and yet if they knew that in our “death” God makes us new creations, filled with Himself…how could our own selfish desires ever compare to His selflessness?
