Somebody call Will Smith because thanks to the Coronavirus, it’s like a scene from an apocalyptic blockbuster out here in these streets.
Honestly – New York City is turning into a chaotic nightmare.
People are walking around in masks, I can’t tell you the number of mass emails I’ve gotten instructing me to wash my hands (you’re breaking some new ground there, Copernicus), and everyone on the subway is actively sizing people up, trying to determine if they’re riding with Patient Zero.
And apparently, for good reason. You know it’s bad when my father — King of not-freaking out/calm-cool-&-collected/never-over-reacter — sends me a Twitter thread about the potential catastrophic impact COVID-19 could have if there’s an actual outbreak.
Sometimes, I think there’s more fear-mongering than facts circulating in the media around things like this, but respecting my dad’s concern…I caved and heeded his advice.
I went to 4 different Walgreens yesterday to buy my doomsday kit: cleaning supplies, toilet paper, bottled water, hand sanitizer, etc. – and I kid you not — all four stores were completely sold out of – not only cleaning products – but also hand sanitizer and antibacterial soap!! We’re talking empty shelves!
And – thanks to the law of supply and demand – I ended up paying a whopping $24 on Amazon for ONE canister of Lysol disinfectant wipes.
If I wasn’t coughing before, I certainly did after that price tag.
The country is freaking out.
And the fervor with which people are preparing for a potential doomsday is unprecedented. It’s like Y2K all over again. People are stock piling toilet paper and paper face masks. I met a guy at a party last night who was side-hustling those blue paper masks for $25 bucks a pop!!
It’s a frenzy. And it’s damn impressive, to be honest.
And, sitting back, watching this whole thing unfold, I couldn’t help but think to myself — what would happen if we were attack other areas of our lives with this same intensity?
People are snatching up anything “antibacterial” like their life depended on it. Bleach? Lay it on me. Antimicrobial? Here, take my first born.
There is a desperation. A determination. A devotion. Granted, it’s driven by self-interest.
But what would happen, if we were to, say, attack recovery with that same life-or-death intensity?
How would it be if we were to pursue our relationship with God with that same urgency? To save our souls, with the same tanacity as fighting to save our lives?
Or what if we were to take that frenzied energy and put it towards helping other people, loving our friends, pursuing goals and dreams, working to save the environment – or the unborn?
There’s so much complacency these days – so much luke-warmness that, quite frankly, it’s refreshing to see that, as a society, we have it in us to actually care about something. That we can set aside our differences and rally together to defeat a collective threat.
Pity, that it took the coronavirus to bring that out of us.
I pray that this corona virus be contained. It breaks my heart to see what’s happening overseas, and to hear the death toll continues to rise.
I hope that with the arrival of spring, we can kick this virus, and move forward to days where the threat of a hand sanitizer barter system isn’t on the brink of reality.
Because in addition to ruthlessness in the CVS aisles, COVID-19 has also brought out the absolute worst in people: Despicable acts racism and overt prejudice against our brothers and sisters from China are sadly a reality, and people are letting fear cloud their judgement and influence their words and actions.
It’s gross and completely unacceptable.
So, I think we all need to take a collective deep breath. Act with common sense — yes, wash our hands — Act with prudence when it comes to staying healthy.
But try to channel this panicked energy into positive intensity towards things that also matter.
Starting with kindness. How about that.
“This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

Thank You for this. I am currently Quarantined in Beijing at an Olympic Training Facility. Asia (Not just China) has been on lockdown for over a month with temperature checks at public places and scowls to those not wearing masks.
We only tend to care and take precautions when our instincts for fear are engaged. Did we need a pandemic to tell us to wash our hands?
Things will improve, we will survive and hopefully lessons will be learned. Not just on how to take care of ourselves but to see ourselves in others and not blame them out of fear.
But on the bright side unable to go out to bars or restaurants and locked in a giant weight room Lent is easier this year 😉

Thank you Carolyn. My first thought when I heard about the Corono Virus was, “Great. Just what people need, another excuse for racism.” Sadly many Chinese students are stranded overseas right now. They cannot get back to university to complete their studies. The measures are necessary but it is still heartbreaking. I am passionate about this. Sorry. I have been to China. My children are at university with many Chinese students. In fact most of their friends are Chinese and they are lovely. My heart goes out to them all. I think many Australian universities are allowing them to complete their studies online for the time being. To all the stranded Chinese students, I am thinking of you all. They, along with all those affected by this virus, need our support and our prayers more than ever. Thank you for this post Carolyn.

I rarely get sick, but the last two weeks, I have the sniffles, and I haven’t been close to anyone who has the virus. I think it’s the stress that lowered my immune system that is the probably the cause. Stay safe.

I’m living in Malaysia , it happens the same . all masks, hand sanitizer are sold out, company restricts travelling, cancelled outdoors events & we’re watching the corana case increase every week. I’m just spit-balling here, but let’s say people are extremely passionate these days. They are passionate about themselves, but it’s a passion that needs refocused. Their passion is about how popular they are on social media, how they stack up to “influencers”…how much they matter to other people. Interest in self, but sadly focused on the world.
What if they focused how much they matter to God? You’ve preached the secret to recovery in so many words – you discovered how much you matter to God. And this takes us straight to your very last comment. “Starting with kindness.”
Kindness based on Christian love and telling people about why we are the way we are. That can show them how much they matter to God.

we are in Singapore, and while there was a period (two-three weeks perhaps) where masks and hand-sanitizer products were impossible to find, it appears now that such products are much easier to come by. People also seemed to have calmed down a bit about the crisis. I hope the same happens in the U.S., but hopefully on a faster pace. Stay healthy!

I am in Northern California – we just had our first death due to coronavirus today… right here… it’s a virus… so it will eventually spread – so I do understand the panic.
Of course no one wants to die … and like someone said – if you gonna get it, you gonna get it … plain and simple – just hope and pray for the best.
I already went through a lot of loss … I would prefer NOT to go through more… but life teaches us things so I am bracing for possible losses.
There are losses that would devastate me still though… obviously any of my kids … but they are young and healthy – no medical issues so they should be ok… and not everyone has issues
But I am afraid of losing my mother who is in a memory care facility with Alzheimer’s … I am not ready to lose her completely. So I do feel fear with that a little bit. She is in her 70’s … I will have lost my whole family within 3 years if I lose her. So it is kinda on my mind.
I am not in panic mode because there is nothing you can do… so hopefully everything will be ok for most people 🙏 … but is scary.
And of course no one wants to die from a virus like this themselves.
Also… when I had cancer … something struck me at that time … everyone I knew came to my side to offer anything they could and show me how much they loved me… got me through some really dark times… but I always wish was not just because I was “sick” … I wish people would be like that everyday with everyone – can you imagine the world if that’s how it was?!
And then you see instances like 9/11 when didn’t matter who you are – people rushed in from everywhere to help
So I dunno… it’s on everyone’s mind
My kids at school are making jokes … as kids do… but it is kind of serious. Loss of life in any situation causes a lot of emotions, and since this is new and we don’t have a vaccine or preventative medicine yet.. and it’s spreading fast and deaths are happening so it just gives a bit of a panic for some… the media certainly does not help
I don’t quite know how worried to be. But again, nothing I can do but hope for the best and pray.

Well there has been a run on the supermarkets here in Australia for some products. Toilet paper disappears off the shelves by 9am in spite of manufacturers working 24 hours a day to keep up with the demand. Hand sanitizers have left the planet. LOL. People are nuts! However we do need to take precautions and follow health department directions. The best antidote for this virus is stay close to Jesus. 🙂

I live in San Jose, California right now and I can tell you that though it is not quite as bad as in NYC, Amazon Fresh will NOT deliver between now and Sunday (unless that’s changed) and I have no clue what “magic thing” is happening on Sunday other than daylight savings, so I understand this post and completely agree! This is WORSE than when the Swine Flu had an outbreak about a decade or so ago (2009 I think?) and getting crazier than Y2K! People will not shop or deliver food, companies (and private citizens who had booked flights or other travel plans) are cancelling travel plans, people are wearing masks (they were at the hospital I went to see my GI doctor at) and for 1 moment, I wish I’d worn a mask and gloves because the cab driver who drove me back from my doctor appointment (I get medical rides through my health insurance) kept coughing and sneezed a couple of times. He covered his mouth but still! Anyhow, this frenzy over Corona-virus is out of control and I do not think panic and debilitating anxiety is the answer.
I am 100% with you on ALL OF US taking the same drastic measures to stay safe from the deadly virus in case an outbreak becomes a reality of the virus, to recover and also to draw closer to Jesus and serve God so completely would be a much better use of our time and it would seriously reduce the stress levels and anxiety of everyone panicking over it if they/we instead had out focus on JESUS and on living and recovering instead of the fear of dying. I was beginning to think maybe I was the crazy one for not being in super panic mode over this virus, but it is nice to know I am not alone in thinking people are taking things a bit too far and putting their focus in the wrong place! Jesus is always the right place for our focus to be on and working so fervently to love, honor, and obey our Lord and Savior brings peace and also brings solutions to the problems we face/are currently facing.

I am holding on out here in Californi-craziness. Same empty store shelves. We’re changing our worship services to have the single-use prefilled communion cups, and asking people to not clasp hands. Our side hustle- medical skills testing is impacted by this stuff too. Prayers for clarity and sanity going up to the Almighty.

Yes, if we were as excited and running to God we would not have to worry. I love Psalm 91 and how those who rest in God’s shelter are protected from deadly disease.
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

It’s almost the same everywhere. In India, in quite a lot of places, masks have disappeared from stores, and hand sanitizers have become quite rare a sighting in stores. Cleaning aids, disinfecting liquids are available, though.
I wonder why people didn’t get scared during Ebola outbreak, but are getting paranoid over Coronavirus. They are getting paranoid by the fact that Coronavirus doesn’t have a cure, yet with a fatality rate of 2%. But nobody freaks out when they hear that even Influenza doesn’t have a cure or vaccine.
Of course, one should take precautions like washing hands or wearing masks (though that has a questionable impact for healthy people).

Well said, its ridiculous over here too, Melbourne stores are especially running out of toilet paper. Why? there are four large factories in Australia who are working hard to replace stock the empty shelves. There is no way our small population will run out. In the meantime no doubt Satan is having a party. But, the good news is that God is still on his throne, and His word says that He has not given us a spirit of fear but love, power and a sound mind. Well put about media hype over the corona virus. I went throygh my news feed on Facebook last night & call me ignorant. B
However every second person on my feed had posted a meme about the viris.
There are so many deadly illnesses a person can die from. There a more illnesses we pass on ( the common cold) that kills young and vulnerable people with week immune systems each second.
I understand the serious of it & it is spreading ( like illnesses do).
If we documented all of the illnesses people die from die from – daily wouldn’t that put the corona virus inro perspective? Surely… Lol

Unfortunately people seem to have lost all perspective. They aren’t helped by the media (social and news) who seem determined to stoke things up, either deliberately or unintenionally (and at the moment I’m not sure which of those two is worse!)
Checking in with friends all over the US and Europe over the last few days this panic buying is everywhere and in reality it’s not needed. As someone pointed out on the television last night, if we kept a rolling count each year of who had flu and how many deaths there had been because of it, that would probably cause as much panic.
Now I’m not suggesting for a moment that Covid-19 / Corona Virus isn’t bad news and isn’t going to stretch health care in a lot of nations and be responsible (directly or indirectly) for a number of deaths. Of course it is and my heart goes out to anyone who loses a relative as a result of it.
On a political show last night it was pointed out that this is an opportunity for the best in humanity to show itself (although so far we’re not doing a good job of it) by looking after our neighbours and making sure that they are well and don’t need anything, especially if they are elderly. A wonderful chance to show the love of God, (not that that was the point of the politician).
On a lighter note the hoarding has created some wonderfully amusing stories including the person who checked in as hold luggage bag of toilet rolls when they flew home and the family who accidently ordered 48 boxes of toiler rolls rather than 48 rolls. They had about 2,300 rolls deliever. (More worrying is they said it would last them 12 years. That’s 15 rolls a month!)
That’s a great point about the media! They’re drumming up fear! Yes! I hope the best in humanity does come out 🙂 2300 rolls?! They’re set for life! Haha Hugs and love xox

I haven’t been to school for over a month by won’t and won’t be going back until after Easter :/ (Being a teen I have to say that I was quite happy about this at first, but it’s been getting quite hard to deal with!) It’s been stressful but your post relieved me as everyone around me has been panicking quite a bit. But more importantly, I’m glad that you recognized the issue about people equating East Asian looking people to having the virus! Hi!! Thank you so much for this post, it really means a lot 🙂 I’m a 16 year old living in Hong Kong, and it’s been quite rough lately for all of us as well! It does look like a apocalypse here too – streets are quiet (compared to city standards!), everyone’s wearing masks, and some even goggles or gloves! Not only that, but I haven’t been to school since January and won’t be until after Easter, and I know some friends of mine who are graduating this year that are worrying a bit because of that.
But I’m so so grateful for your message of kindness, especially amidst all this panic in my city~ I’m also glad that you pointed out the inexcusable racist incidents because of the virus 🙁 Some of my friends living overseas have been experiencing some small cases but themselves and it’s disheartening!

Great post as always. Crazy the empty shelfs. Yes, i agreed its getting out of hand.
That said, the media is fuelling the panic… not releasing the right information. A high number of cases are people that are elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
Its just a type of flu… which kills approx 300, 000 people world wide per year but no talk about that.
Of course its not good but there are more pressing issues, like cutting down the rain forest, our oxygen supply???
Another great point you made was the positive to come out of it, that we collective are coming together with a common focus. That is good to see.

You were right about panic buying. the evidence is that antibacterial products are selling out. In fact all 3 types of liquid hand cleansers are selling out. here are the three types.
1. ALCOHOL. This is good. But there has to be a high percentage of alcohol, if its a low percentage it is better to use soap. Or vodka, or cheap whiskey.
2. SOAP. Liquid soap looks like sanitiser and judging by the way the shelves are empty it is being mistaken.This is also good. It is more expensive than bars of soap, but its your choice.
3. ANTIBACTERIAL. This is effective against bacteria but not viruses. This is important, so I’ll shout it: ANTIBACTERIAL SANITISER IS INEFFECTIVE AGAINST COVID 19. Do not buy this, there is no point.
Here is the UK things are getting worse. We were saying we were trying to contain the outbreak, we’ve moved on tho talking about how to contain an outbreak.and the advice is how to delay it. It is no longer a matter of if we have a full scale outbreak but when we have it.

Fear mongering, yep. On the day that TV he first person (already medically compromised) passed away from it in Washington state, 10 people died their from plain old influenza but that wasn’t reported.
Are there risks? Sure but there’s a risk of some sort in every moment of our day….random violence, terror attack, will someone launch a nuclear bomb, car accidents, tornado, random slip and fall.
I guess we have to choose how we are going to do this thing called life…choose whether we live in constant fear or just get busy living it. As for me, why should I worry? We are born on a path that leads to an ultimate end anyway. I trust that G-d has my life in his hand (I’ve placed it in His care, control etc, didnt I, sacrificing my way, my will, my plans and purposes for His?) And, He knows the number of my days and His plans for me, therefore, being that nothing can pluck me from His hand but my life, time here and my time to go home to Him are under His control…of what shall I worry or fear? (except running out of toilet paper 🤣)

Weeell, in the “last days there will be pestilence.” Yeah I do wonder how much is hype. What I wonder is what makes this different than the flu, which has killed way more people in one year than this has? Is it because it is just one more to worry about? I drive Uber/Lyft and had a couple of Asian passengers throughout the day, one wore a mask, the other not. I did not refuse them, but did wonder about whether or not it was a concern. I felt badly about having to worry about it at all and was I unwise not to be wearing one at all? I also flew to see my sister with the brain tumor and wondered about that as well. The news in Florida said, the only masks that will protect you are the ones with the ventilator, others are a waste of money. I don’t know. Only time will tell.

Ever have two keys that almost work on the same lock? It goes all the way in but, nothing. That’s a virus. It’s connected to strands of cells that we share with other animals. The chances for a super flu are 29 billionxbillion. Look at your hands and let’s say you wanted to make a super flu. You use some pig, close to fingers. Some birds, close three fingers. There, you now have five fingers left or 120 strains of super flu. Only, maybe 2 or three are actually pretty good at opening the lock just like the keys that look the same. No, amount of cleaning will stop an airborne contagion. Buy, some booze.

The bad thing about this one that nobody is even mentioning is protein decay. Some say 4 hours. Some say 12 hours. Others that studied it are saying 9 days. Quarantines slow the spread but an infected person might walk 5 miles a day, opening doors, using pens, asking directions. That’s a lot of proteins just waiting for another person.

Its amazing to see people being treated so badly with because of this. I’ve seen a number of videos and cases where Asians are being discriminated against – strangely enough by a group of people who themselves often complain of racial discrimination all the time.
I won’t get to much into that because that hypocrisy only infuriates me further.
We cannot allow ourselves to live in fear. Psalm 91 promises us that God will not let anything happen to us; so long as we trust and have faith in him and follow his guidance.
God promises to protect us and He has given his angels charge over us, but that doesn’t mean I should leap out of a 20 story building saying, “God will save me.”
We take precautions, but we don’t live in fear. If my boss tells me that we need to travel to China tomorrow to have an important business meeting, I’m not going to say, I cannot go because I’m afraid. I’ll go, knowing that God will protect me. I will live in freedom as I always have.
Besides, for us Christians, death is simply a transition that brings us into the presence of an almighty, loving God. We don’t have to fear death. And in this time of crisis, it is an incredible witnessing tool, we can use to bring those into the saving knowledge of Christ.

If people were truly focused on God, they wouldn’t be freaking out. I think it’s always good to be prepared, but panicked? No. Hey, I look at it this way, maybe for once people who never thought about cleanliness or hygiene as important, will now decide to do so, and that makes it better for the rest of us “clean freaks.”

Thank you for this! As the media continues to build the fear, I’ve been shaken. I’m immune lowered (?), I suppose, since I’m expecting, and I have a toddler as well. Even when there isn’t an extreme virus floating around, I’m a germ worrier, trying to keep my household happy and healthy. It’s really built up my anxiety. The other day, though, my mother-in-law said that the best place to turn to is the Bible, and it’s so true! My husband has continued to tell me not to worry, but, I suppose, I needed to hear it from someone else. Thank you for giving me another Christ-like outlook. Stay healthy in NY!

My mom is a nurse and she works in an hospital that apparently now have several cases of the virus. She is currently taking time off work. She also think it’s no ordinary virus but at the same time agrees that we have to take it all to God in prayer. God is still soverign after all. I went into Costco tonight here in Canada and the shelves were fully stocked. Not a person who waited in line had any of the doomsday items listed in the apocalypse survival kit distributed by the gov’t. Could it be that people here are more prepared then our U.S. brothers and sisters, or are we Canadians simply more balanced in the way we perceive an emergency situation? I’m not sure, but the toilet paper was on special today.
How interesting! Even Amazon is completely sold out of all the “doomsday” items! So crazy! I think the later — coupled with the US media’s obsession with fear mongering! Hugs and love xox
