CORONAVIRUS: The Power of One

Well here we are, it’s Monday morning in New York City. Quarantine Day 18.

Thanks to the Coronavirus, New Yorkers are collectively climbing the walls of their never-before-felt-smaller apartments. You turn on the news, and it’s all about how NYC is on the brink of crumbling. Which, sure — go outside and it feels like the apocalypse because zero people are out, and every shop and restaurant is closed. But the reality is that — New Yorkers are all just holed up in their apartments, wearing the same sweatpants for the third day in a row, drinking wine at 3pm, and mindlessly reading #CoronaMemes from their makeshift office desks on the couch.

Or maybe that’s just me and my friends.

Now look, I’m in no way making light of this situation – I am merely trying to lighten the tense and frightened mood 🙂 The fact is, that while we’re all social distancing and living the life of a legitimate couch potato, our medical professionals, store clerks, deliverymen, sanitation workers, doormen, firefighters/police officers, farmers, and truck drivers are out there in harm’s way, working overtime as actual pillars of society in this pandemic. And to them — including my brother, who is a doctor — I say a humongous thank you.

So, as a member of the former camp, I have a lot of isolated spare time on my hands. To date, I haven’t watched TV other than the nightly news, and I’ve spent the little free time I do have learning the guitar and researching about Corona and the like.

And in my informative pursuits, I realized something very interesting….

The infection transmission rate of COVID19 is a model for successful evangelization.

Now listen — I know this could be seen as slightly bad timing. Like…come on, read the room, girl. BUT – I am all for looking for silver linings.

But just look at this chart.

Right now, the data show that one person transmits COVID19 to (on average)…three people. Who then each pass it onto three more people. Who pass it onto three more people. And thus, the exponential — or viral — spread of Corona.

Looking at this daunting visual…it hit me: that is the power of one person sharing the Good News.

If each one of us, found the courage to be beacons of light, and point our lives to Jesus…and “transmitted” His love to just three people…who then passed it on, who then passed it on…imagine what our world would be like.

IMAGINE.

(And no — I’m not giving a cheeky reference to that self-serving “Imagine” compilation video shared by Gal Gadot and her celebrity friends.)

Natalie Portman, Gal Gadot, and Will Farrel

No – imagine the real change — the positive force — that could come to be. Talk about the ramifications of “community spread!”

My prayer all along — in addition to the eradication of this horrible virus, and the protection of loved ones and those on the front lines — is that people would use this time of solitude and forced isolation to truly contemplate their eternity, and turn to God.

That has been my greatest prayer. Because people are scared. And frankly, they’re scared of dying. We’ve got the news out here telling us that 1 in 2 New Yorkers are going to get COVID19, and when they do, there won’t be a hospital bed, and basically you’re going to suffocate to death in the dingy hallway of an overcrowded hospital with no family or loved ones around because of contamination risk.

At the end of the day — I don’t care how “realistically minded” or “staunchly fearless” you are — whether you admit it or not, every single one of us is afraid of that — at least to some degree.

And when people are scared — especially of death — they think about God…and specifically what’s going to happen to them in the “great beyond.”

And I just pray that during this time, people return to Him. To His loving, welcoming arms that are always open, no matter what.

And if we all come out of this incredibly trying season, having had a life-interrupting encounter with our Creator, and come to have a renewed love for Him…and then share that…the ramifications could be momentous.

Now look, I’m not talking that we need to take up a soap box on the street corner and start berating people with the Gospel. No — we should share the Good News always, and use words when necessary.

If the Coronavirus has taught us anything, it is that there is power in one. ONE. One person passing on the virus. One person social distancing. One doctor treating patients. One delivery person transporting supplies. One.

One person, sharing God’s love.

It could be you. It could be me. But what if it was all of us.

Stay healthy, stay well, stay positive.

  1. What a way to look at it. The power of one – it’s amazing how much if willing we can learn at such a time. The power of one – the same applies in never feeling one persons prayer is not enough.
    Blessings Caralyn 😊💙. Stay safe.

    • Thank you friend. You’re so right! One prayer is a powerful powerful thing too!! Stay well! Hugs and love xox

But I had way worse trouble in there over the last several years for a long time! Thanks for your positive thinking as usual. Just stay in and you know the routine! Love!

  4. Love this!!! My daughter is an RN, so she keeps us posted, but fortunately where she’s at hasn’t been bad… yet. I do like your proselytizing tips. Is that the right term? And yes, there’s certainly that chance of dying alone. My cousin in L.A. was not allowed visitors and my sister, in Florida is down to one for the duration but for how long?

  5. Hi Caralyn! Glad to know you’re doing so well considering all that’s going on. How are your friends doing, especially the one that tested positive? Praying for you all! 🙂

    • Thanks so much Kenneth, I appreciate that. My friend is good! All healed and finished with her 14 day quarantine! Hugs and love xox

      • Great to hear! I wish the media would tell more about the ones that recover. Would be nice to hear more good news. Have a great week!

  6. Good words, dear girl. Please, please, just like I tell my daughter in Buffalo, please stay safe. Don’t take chances, even when you think it safe to do so. Meanwhile, God’s grip to us all. – Alan

    • Aw thank you so much Alan!! And yes i am being very careful! Yes – Gods grip to us all! Hugs and love xox stay well! C

  7. Amen! I believe Jesus is doing something great and moving hearts toward Him. Stay safe Caralyn!

    • Thanks Adrienne! I pray you are right! That would be a huge silver lining! Hugs and love xox stay well xo

  8. Quarantine comes from the Italian “Quarenta” which means forty. Quarenta comes from the Latin “Quadraginta”, with the same meaning. That same word is the root of “Quadragesima” which is the Latin way to refer to Christ’s 40 days in the desert. Quarantine = Lent. We just get hit with it over the head this year.

    Stay safe, stay healthy.

    • Oh my gosh Scoot what an incredible fact!! Thanks for sharing!! Hugs and love xox

  9. That.was.incredible.!! Many prayers for you, Caralyn, as you endure this daunting time in the big city. ❤️Keep speaking your truth.. we’re all listening.

    • Aw thank you Mary!!!! Gosh you’re so kind to say that. Sending the biggest hugs! (Socially distanced of course 😉 ) stay well x

  10. Love the pickup lines. Just my dad-joke speed. For example, my daughter in Columbus was talking about a rheumatologist. I asked her if he studied interior decorating. Ba-dum-bum!

No, you’re not making light of the situation. You’re using my favorite equation from literary criticism. Pain + Distance = Humor. You can either wait for distance or create it with humor. Some of my best “work” was when I was in the hospital.

The power of “one.” Well done. As we learned on 9/11, there are no atheists in foxholes – or quarantine. Hopefully, people who come to Jesus at this time will remain in faith once things get right again!!

I trust you remain well and roach-free. I can’t help being worried about you. You remain in my prayers.

    “Dad”

    • Haha thanks Jeff – yeah the creativity that is coming out of this thing is remarkable! Hahaha interior decorating lollllll Thanks for your thought – you’re right – foxholes are full of faith! Haha yes – roach Free as of now. Thanks be to God. Thank you for the prayers. Know that you’re in mine too! Hugs and love xox stay well!

  11. I never understood when I was little and my father said…’you are not the center of the universe’ but now I understand. It is not about not being able to make change but realizing sometimes change just happens around you and the decisions you make will determine the outcome. We are all victim of our own choices. No input. No deflection. Only truth and flowers on a grave one day.

    • Thank you so much for sharing that. Yeah that is definitely a powerful lesson to learn. Stay well. Hugs and love xox

    • Oh nice! Stay well Matt! Can’t wait to watch the vid! Thanks for passing it along xox

  12. This is so encouraging! Since my friends and I left the City, we have been praying this weird time in history will lead to a season of revival and awakening! So glad other believers are on the same wavelength!

    • Hi Sami! Oh gosh thank you so much 🙂 Yes! I will join you in those prayers! yes!! now is the time! stay well! Hugs and love xox

  13. Great message! All it takes is one; but how much more if we all share the gospel. The pick up lines were THE best!!! Laughter is great medicine! Thanks for reminding us that there’s always a silver lining!

    • thank you so much!! You’re so right – one is awesome — together is amazing! ALWAYS a silver lining! thanks for stopping by! stay well! xox Hugs and love xox

  14. Hi, I agree with you. I live in Washington State. We used to be #1 about how many people had this virus. Today I had to drive into town to buy food. For the first time in decades, I was able to drive 70 to 75 MPH on the highway during ‘rush hour’.
As far as telling others about Jesus. I was in the military during the Cold War. We would have classes on what do, if and when Soviet Union would attack. Many people on board my ship were very open to hear God’s word. But then at the time, we were watching the Soviets watch us.

    • thank you so much for sharing your experience! oh wow – yeah people are really hunkering down. oh wow – that is incredible. and thank you for your service to our country!!! stay well friend! Hugs and love xox

  15. Those pick-up lines are pretty hilarious. 🙂 I don’t think you were over the line. Sometimes, the best cure for any disease is laughter and optimism. If you can’t laugh at yourself, it is a miserable existence. Laughter is more infectious; you could walk into a room and someone’s laughing which makes you want to laugh to, even if you don’t know what the joke was. (unless you were the butt, then no).

Hang in there! The Prez says until April 30. Pray for the nation and especially the president and his team. Remember after 9/11? Everyone prayed for the nation regardless of party or creed. Now is the time too for prayers and hope.

    • thanks Justin! haha yeah i thought it was a pretty funny meme! yeah, prayers for the nation are so crucial right now. i’ll join you in them!! stay well! Hugs and love xox

    • thanks Susie! haha yeah — i’m actually a vodka/soda girl myself! haha i actually don’t keep wine in the house! lol! stay well my friend! Hugs and love xox

  16. Thank you Caralyn,
    Day 18 😮

    //

I do need some new trackpants… mine are Mossimo, and from the late-90s.

I am encouraged by what you have written. You have written about viral growth, and compared this with evangelism – and as you say, ‘use words where necessary’.
I am doing some work on Romans 1 🤨, and I see more to Holy Spirit in the text…

    Here’s to lightened moods

  17. Hi BBB, you did a great job thinking of the comparison between helping people encounter The Lord, with wisdom for us to contemplate, and the spiralling progress of the pandemic. It shows how ready to serve The Lord you are personally, with an observation ready like that.

I always enjoy your story. It never strikes me as anything less than remarkable. I feel very blessed that I’ve had the good fortune to encounter your blog.

Thank you for bringing so many insights to one place, your blog: you deserve the thanks. I hope that you won’t give up blogging in favour of strumming a guitar, although I am sure you would have at least a chance to bring the world a famous song, what with the faith you experience in your life, and with your ability to light faith. I only think you’re such a great blogger already that I would miss reading what you write here.

Today the rock journal Stereogum addressed what happened with myspace, in the last two decades, and it is a worthwhile read if you are interested in music history. About myspace, Stereogum refers to Canada as being distinctly elsewhere to where else but the US, where so much great music became a reality. I’m a Canadian, and there are indeed a great many differences between a person from the US and a person from Canada.

While I do hear mentally from the green-eyed monster envy, more often than not I feel lucky I’m from Canada, and though I may not be the most typical Canadian, I never want to let the past go the way the devil would let what’s gone down slip away between my very fingers. I think you are the kind of person who will always remember what’s important about what happened in your life.

    • Thank you so much Odell!! This is some great food for thought. And gosh thanks for saying that about my blog – I am seriously so touched. Haha oh boy – I know about four chords on the guitar! Haha but what a kind thing to say! Hang in there. Stay well! Hugs and love xox

    • Aw thank you so much! You’re to kind!! Yes – He will always use everything for good! Stay well!! Hugs and love xox

    • I know me too. I miss mass so much. Virtual mass is helpful but definitely not the same. Easter is going to be surreal this year. So strange. Stay well. Hugs and love xox

    • What if!!? Thank you so much Abbey 🙂 so glad this resonated with you! Stay well my friend!! Hugs and love xox xox

  18. My grand daughter who lives and works in NY fled from the city to Ohio thinking she’d caught the virus and is staying with her Mom until the scourge has passed. Stay safe there.

    • Oh wow – yeah I have thought about that but the 10 hour drive is scary considering I haven’t significantly driven a car in the last 9 years 😬. Hope she’s well. Thanks for stopping by! Stay safe Ian!! Hugs and love xox

    • thank you so much Lisa, i appreciate that. hope you’re hangin in there! stay well! Hugs and love xox

  19. Thank you for this blog. It just resonates. What if each one of us Christ followers showed the love of Jesus to everyone who is so frightened. God can use our love to open hearts. Stay safe.

    • thank you so much Andrea! i’m so glad it resonated with you! amen to that! stay well my friend. Hugs and love xox

  20. That Spinoff post had another really good visual – about flattening the curve. Hope by not going out, we directly impact & lesson the severity our essential services face. It was a great article actually – when I grow up I want to be Dr Souxie!
Hope you aren’t going too stir crazy. I am very grateful I can at least tell the kid to go outside & play.

    • Thank you friend 🙂 yeah it was a very interesting article! Hope you’re hanging in there! Hugs and love xox

  21. My friend was afraid today. I told him, this is the easy part don’t quit now. I thought about the last supper for some reason. Maybe, because I worked 16 hours straight without a break. 😂 I thought, out of all the things and miracles provided to the believers in the stories. It was the thief that made it to heaven. I actually, didn’t feel so bad after that. Penitence, not Grace in times of sorrow.

      • I think, it gets a bad rap. Only those, really confronted with death can appreciate, life. That’s, your story. I don’t fit the frame of theology myself. I like, women. Beer. I could relate to the sacrifices of crappy jobs to pursue, life as art. Which, is a big part of monotheistic culture.

      • Guess. I don’t like women, that much. Haven’t dated since Obama’s first term. 😂 I know, the world has definitely changed when I’m at the grocery and women take a second look at me. I just, smile and laugh. Even, in dark times the need to have someone remains. I have, good whisky and big books.

      • If I had that cute factor I’d probably do the same. I’d walk the beaches after scuba diving. I’d see the guys in Beach House rentals stopping girls. “I’ve got sangria…” 🙄 Seems, a bit boring. 😂

      • I think you have to be bored to fall in love. I’m certain COVID-19, has helped people be bored enough to give people chances. Not myself per se falling in love is expensive. I mean, just in my example above. A summer Beach house $600. Dressing hip $400. Tons of Sangria $200. That’s $1200 just, to cat call on the beach. I could, almost build a motorcycle with that much.

      • I’ve read Love In A Time of Cholera. It doesn’t really delve into the life changing atmosphere of viruses. Do you think, love will be different after all this?

      • That’s a great question. I hope in some ways it illuminates what’s truly important in love

      • What is important to you in love? You seem like you’re, surrounded by it all the time. 😂 When I walked the halls of the sickest wards. I gave a hand with the not so easy patients. Long days. I think dads love differently. You take the frail and crumbled person, as they are. At the end, it’s mostly day by day. What was important, I loved that they trusted me. I’d, ride around in snow chains and a rain suit hunting for medicine. Well, mostly heavy duty pain meds. End of life. Medicine, has a different meaning.
I think, love to me. Was, broken after my wife. I umm, can’t really say love was fixed after. Fairytales, I guess are goals not destinations.

      • I’m not sure. I typically push guys away as soon as they start to love me. i’m working on it

      • How does, one person fall in love and one doesn’t? Hm. Yet, here I am waiting for maybe the mail person. The court clerk. Someone, to be interesting. Not pretty, interesting.

      • Exactly. Love comes from two people. I get pissed about people that love sports teams, celebs…do they love you?

Imagine what marketing would look like without all these empty relationships?

  22. Your blog reminded me of a scripture that was shared from my daughters Church devotional today. I think it is the Passion Version
    “I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me;
I was found by those who did not seek me.
To a nation that did not call on my name,
I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’’ Isaiah 65:1

  23. My dear friend, Caralyn

Yes, in these difficult times for all of us we become aware in our isolation how much we care with our thoughts, in our hearts about each other. This outer distance, brings us together with no distance – we develop love for each other, have respect for each other and have time to reflect on all our relations. Love, true love, is the answer to everything and no virus can kill this. During these times we maybe separated from outside, but the language of our hearts, unites us, merges as one humanity. As this virus is spreading fear and horror around the world, love may overcome it with the sunshine of our hearts and give condolence to all who have to suffer with a strong faith in God, Ocean of all consciousness in which we are a drop of it.

Allow me to share another poem that I have written recently in this connection.

Much love to you and your, my thoughts and heart is with all of you.
    Didi

    Virus: Ego and mind

Ego and mind of a man
    Is like a virus
    It needs a host
    To multiply his power through:

    Money, selfishness, pride, greed,
    Attachment – packed in wishes

    Detachment is the solution

    Even from oneself
    To be one…Self…

    This virus, ego and mind
    Is spreading around the world
May we all find a serum against it

    DidiArtist, 30.03.2020

  24. Great article. From this corona outbreak may we all learn to appreciate people, the outside and enjoy life and bask in humanity. We have all been shown to be equal at the core of life and face the same threats. May we all enjoy humanity and acknowledge sacrifice of many to help save others

    • thank you so much 🙂 amen to that – appreciate people. Hugs and love xox stay well x

  25. Hope you are staying safe. I’m considered an “essential” employee and have been commuting to work everyday via the MTA. I am scared, for me, my family and my fellow New Yorker’s. This message is just what I needed. Please stay safe and be well❤

    • thank you, on behalf of NYC and this country, for the work you’re doing. You are a hero and i am praying for you and your family. stay well my dear friend. what is the MTA like these days? hugs x

      • The MTA is worse than usual. The trains are packed, no way to practice social distancing and although the mayor suggests waiting for a emptier car sometimes that’s impossible. What’s heartbreaking is the amount of homeless people I see. Not sure if they were always there hidden by the tourist. I took a walk to Bryant Park and it was completely filled with homeless people. Also I have not seen a police officer since this began. It’s starting to to feel sad and lawless. Just like a movie.

      • Oh wow – stay safe my friend. Gosh – makes me so sad. Yeah same here. Graffiti is up in my neighborhood. Praying for you. X

  26. I love this, the power of one is amazing!! I have been enjoying the quiet time in my backyard where I meditate, read and pray. It has really kept me going. We are all with you my dear, many prayers being sent. Wishing you peace and safety. So much love😊❤🙏

    • Thank you so much! i’m so glad this resonated with you 🙂 and gosh – i appreciate your prayers so much. know that you’re in mine too!! stay well! Hugs and love xox

  27. Yes. This. All of this.

Your example about each person infecting others and how that relates to evangelism, maybe it’s just because of my background in mathematics, but that really caught my eye. I’ve heard an illustration like that once on a weekend retreat when I was in college. (Hmm, I’m going to have to write about that in my blog once, but now I don’t remember when it was… it was the place that had the foosball table, but you don’t know that story… that was during a spring break, it would have been either 1997 or 1998, I might have to go dig through old pictures someday to figure this out… I’m pretty sure I remember one older friend of mine being on that retreat, and he moved away in the summer of 1997, so we’ll say for now it was 1997. I’ll have to look through old pictures and confirm that before I get to 1997 in my own story telling. But I digress…)

So anyway, I saw the speaker (who was a leader with our campus ministry, someone I knew as opposed to a guest speaker) writing on a board; it said something like “100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000” and “2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024.” I walked up and said, “Oooh, a linear function and an exponential function.” The speaker said something acknowledging that I would know the math behind it. When it came time to actually give her talk, she was explaining about the power of discipleship. Her point was that if you preach to 100 people every year, you’ll add 100 more people who know the gospel every year. But if everyone disciples one other person for a year, and those disciples go on to each disciple one other person for a year, then after just 10 years there will be more people who have heard the Gospel compared to if you preach to 100 people every year but then they don’t do anything with it. Then she said, “And Greg can tell you why this happens.” I wasn’t prepared to speak or share that morning, but I gave a little explanation off the top of my head, about how preaching is a linear function with a constant rate of change, you always add the same number of people per year, but discipleship is an exponential function, and exponential functions have a rate of change proportional to the value of the function. So, the more people you have in discipleship, the faster the number of people increases. Everyone clapped. Not only is that important in the study of evangelism, but it also demonstrates that math is useful beyond the classroom. 🙂

    • Hi Greg – what a powerful POWERFUL model. you’re right – it’s that person-to-person interaction that is really going to change the world. so glad you stopped by. i appreciate you sharing that!! Hugs and love xox stay well x

    • Thanks so much lisa!! Aw you’re sweet to say that. Hope you’re staying well! Hugs and love xox xox

  28. Hang in there Ms Beauty. I live in a house that has plenty of room and still find a way to be imprisoned. There is a secrete that most know about and will not utilize. You have it and work it very well. I have a social distancing survival system and will share, if one is feel the need. Just a little dose of you makes things better. 😘😘

  29. Hi, I am trying to stay at home as much as possible. The only times that I have left the house was for medical appointments-dental related. I also had to go to Walmart to get a mouth guard because the dentist and orthodontist recommended it.

  30. For those of us who were born in the stone age we look at this differently. No doubt this is serious stuff but we have seen worse. So the country is saying that we need to make some sacrifices to help? Ok we have done it before and we can done it again no big deal. We grew up in a generation that lived with the fear of all out nuclear war and those fears were real and very serious. So younger folks just relax it’s going to be ok. Maybe this would be a good time to take a hard and serious look at your life and determine what is really important.

    • Thank you so much for sharing your perspective. Good to recognize that. Thanks for stopping by. Stay well. Hugs and love xox

  31. Thank you, Caralyn, for this post. I especially thank you for your characteristic spirit of positivity (and I do not mean that sentimentality that cannot acknowledge difficult, even horrible things, but rather your air, your eye of hopefulness that allows you to look through the shadows in search of the light). Now, the connection or, perhaps, better said, the relation between the spread of the novel coronavirus and the evangelistic effort had occurred to me. Still, your articulation of it is, for me, eloquent and persuasive. I oft have thought that life is being changed through this global viral outbreak and onslaught and that life will remain changed when this phase has passed (for, somehow, I don’t believe that we – humankind – are done with this strain or another). That said, perhaps, as you commend, should we, each and all, during this time of social-distancing and enforced isolation, renew, aye, deepen our relationship with God, then we, again, each and all, will have something wondrously spiritual and eternal to offer to others – primarily, I think, I believe, in our faithful, loving living. Again, Caralyn, my thanks to you.

    • Thank you so much Paul – I do appreciate your kind words. Yes! Renewing that relationship! Glad you stopped by! Stay well xox

    • Aw thank you Ashton!! So glad it resonated with you! Stay well! Hugs and love xox

  32. Hi, Carolyn! It’s Joy from my old blog, Finding Joy. I don’t know if you remember me from a few years ago. I no longer have my blog, and a lot has changed for me, but I just wanted to thank you for your post. You handled such a delicate topic in such a positive way. Did you know that there is actually a St. Corona? She was a martyr and her feast day is May 14th.
Oh, although I am no longer blogging, I have recently opened a store through Zazzle. Please stop by if you have a chance. http://www.zazzle.com/store/a_new_view
Wishing you the best! God bless!

  33. Praying for you and your brother, Caralyn. How are your mom and pop? Have you been able to keep in touch? Praying for them too. God loves you each one! <3

    • Thank you so much again, that means so so much. I have! They’re doing well. They of course wish I was home, as so I, but it’s a complicated situation! Stay well and thank you for the prayers! You’re in mine too! Hugs and love xox

      • I am glad you have been able to keep in touch. Our family is praying for you throughout the day. May God keep a hedge of protection around you and your brother. God is so kind and loving to be there with you both. Praise God for His omnipresence! <3

  34. Hello, and thank you for your meaningful posts! I completely agree that at a time such as this, we can bring more hope and God’s amazing love and grace to the world. Our perception as believers should be one of faith and thanksgiving to God, the Author of the universe for protection and provision … and then, spread this peace that passes all understanding to others. <3

    • Thank you so much Gina! So glad this resonated with you. Amen to that! Stay well! Hugs and love xox

  36. If people were to obey Jesus to leave everything, to take up their cross, and follow him; then they would have their time free like quarantined people do. So to do things Jesus’ way there is plenty of time to serve him and to study his words. But anyways…… everybody is getting a taste of what it is like to live as Jesus wants them to. Blessings to you.

    • Aw thank you so much! You’re kind to say that!! Yes! May it be so! Hugs and love xox
