Well here we are, it’s Monday morning in New York City. Quarantine Day 18.
Thanks to the Coronavirus, New Yorkers are collectively climbing the walls of their never-before-felt-smaller apartments. You turn on the news, and it’s all about how NYC is on the brink of crumbling. Which, sure — go outside and it feels like the apocalypse because zero people are out, and every shop and restaurant is closed. But the reality is that — New Yorkers are all just holed up in their apartments, wearing the same sweatpants for the third day in a row, drinking wine at 3pm, and mindlessly reading #CoronaMemes from their makeshift office desks on the couch.
Or maybe that’s just me and my friends.
Now look, I’m in no way making light of this situation – I am merely trying to lighten the tense and frightened mood 🙂 The fact is, that while we’re all social distancing and living the life of a legitimate couch potato, our medical professionals, store clerks, deliverymen, sanitation workers, doormen, firefighters/police officers, farmers, and truck drivers are out there in harm’s way, working overtime as actual pillars of society in this pandemic. And to them — including my brother, who is a doctor — I say a humongous thank you.
So, as a member of the former camp, I have a lot of isolated spare time on my hands. To date, I haven’t watched TV other than the nightly news, and I’ve spent the little free time I do have learning the guitar and researching about Corona and the like.
And in my informative pursuits, I realized something very interesting….
The infection transmission rate of COVID19 is a model for successful evangelization.
Now listen — I know this could be seen as slightly bad timing. Like…come on, read the room, girl. BUT – I am all for looking for silver linings.
But just look at this chart.
Right now, the data show that one person transmits COVID19 to (on average)…three people. Who then each pass it onto three more people. Who pass it onto three more people. And thus, the exponential — or viral — spread of Corona.
Looking at this daunting visual…it hit me: that is the power of one person sharing the Good News.
If each one of us, found the courage to be beacons of light, and point our lives to Jesus…and “transmitted” His love to just three people…who then passed it on, who then passed it on…imagine what our world would be like.
IMAGINE.
(And no — I’m not giving a cheeky reference to that self-serving “Imagine” compilation video shared by Gal Gadot and her celebrity friends.)
No – imagine the real change — the positive force — that could come to be. Talk about the ramifications of “community spread!”
My prayer all along — in addition to the eradication of this horrible virus, and the protection of loved ones and those on the front lines — is that people would use this time of solitude and forced isolation to truly contemplate their eternity, and turn to God.
That has been my greatest prayer. Because people are scared. And frankly, they’re scared of dying. We’ve got the news out here telling us that 1 in 2 New Yorkers are going to get COVID19, and when they do, there won’t be a hospital bed, and basically you’re going to suffocate to death in the dingy hallway of an overcrowded hospital with no family or loved ones around because of contamination risk.
At the end of the day — I don’t care how “realistically minded” or “staunchly fearless” you are — whether you admit it or not, every single one of us is afraid of that — at least to some degree.
And when people are scared — especially of death — they think about God…and specifically what’s going to happen to them in the “great beyond.”
And I just pray that during this time, people return to Him. To His loving, welcoming arms that are always open, no matter what.
And if we all come out of this incredibly trying season, having had a life-interrupting encounter with our Creator, and come to have a renewed love for Him…and then share that…the ramifications could be momentous.
Now look, I’m not talking that we need to take up a soap box on the street corner and start berating people with the Gospel. No — we should share the Good News always, and use words when necessary.
If the Coronavirus has taught us anything, it is that there is power in one. ONE. One person passing on the virus. One person social distancing. One doctor treating patients. One delivery person transporting supplies. One.
One person, sharing God’s love.
It could be you. It could be me. But what if it was all of us.
Stay healthy, stay well, stay positive.

Quarantine comes from the Italian “Quarenta” which means forty. Quarenta comes from the Latin “Quadraginta”, with the same meaning. That same word is the root of “Quadragesima” which is the Latin way to refer to Christ’s 40 days in the desert. Quarantine = Lent. We just get hit with it over the head this year.

I never understood when I was little and my father said…’you are not the center of the universe’ but now I understand. It is not about not being able to make change but realizing sometimes change just happens around you and the decisions you make will determine the outcome. We are all victim of our own choices. No input. No deflection. Only truth and flowers on a grave one day.

Hi, I agree with you. I live in Washington State. We used to be #1 about how many people had this virus. Today I had to drive into town to buy food. For the first time in decades, I was able to drive 70 to 75 MPH on the highway during ‘rush hour’.
As far as telling others about Jesus. I was in the military during the Cold War. We would have classes on what do, if and when Soviet Union would attack. Many people on board my ship were very open to hear God’s word. But then at the time, we were watching the Soviets watch us.

Those pick-up lines are pretty hilarious. 🙂 I don’t think you were over the line. Sometimes, the best cure for any disease is laughter and optimism. If you can’t laugh at yourself, it is a miserable existence. Laughter is more infectious; you could walk into a room and someone’s laughing which makes you want to laugh to, even if you don’t know what the joke was. (unless you were the butt, then no).
Hang in there! The Prez says until April 30. Pray for the nation and especially the president and his team. Remember after 9/11? Everyone prayed for the nation regardless of party or creed. Now is the time too for prayers and hope.

Today the rock journal Stereogum addressed what happened with myspace, in the last two decades, and it is a worthwhile read if you are interested in music history. About myspace, Stereogum refers to Canada as being distinctly elsewhere to where else but the US, where so much great music became a reality. I’m a Canadian, and there are indeed a great many differences between a person from the US and a person from Canada.
While I do hear mentally from the green-eyed monster envy, more often than not I feel lucky I’m from Canada, and though I may not be the most typical Canadian, I never want to let the past go the way the devil would let what’s gone down slip away between my very fingers. I think you are the kind of person who will always remember what’s important about what happened in your life.

My friend was afraid today. I told him, this is the easy part don’t quit now. I thought about the last supper for some reason. Maybe, because I worked 16 hours straight without a break. 😂 I thought, out of all the things and miracles provided to the believers in the stories. It was the thief that made it to heaven. I actually, didn’t feel so bad after that. Penitence, not Grace in times of sorrow.

I think you have to be bored to fall in love. I’m certain COVID-19, has helped people be bored enough to give people chances. Not myself per se falling in love is expensive. I mean, just in my example above. A summer Beach house $600. Dressing hip $400. Tons of Sangria $200. That’s $1200 just, to cat call on the beach. I could, almost build a motorcycle with that much.

What is important to you in love? You seem like you’re, surrounded by it all the time. 😂 When I walked the halls of the sickest wards. I gave a hand with the not so easy patients. Long days. I think dads love differently. You take the frail and crumbled person, as they are. At the end, it’s mostly day by day. What was important, I loved that they trusted me. I’d, ride around in snow chains and a rain suit hunting for medicine. Well, mostly heavy duty pain meds. End of life. Medicine, has a different meaning.
I think, love to me. Was, broken after my wife. I umm, can’t really say love was fixed after. Fairytales, I guess are goals not destinations.
I’m not sure. I typically push guys away as soon as they start to love me. i’m working on it
How does, one person fall in love and one doesn’t? Hm. Yet, here I am waiting for maybe the mail person. The court clerk. Someone, to be interesting. Not pretty, interesting.

Yes, in these difficult times for all of us we become aware in our isolation how much we care with our thoughts, in our hearts about each other. This outer distance, brings us together with no distance – we develop love for each other, have respect for each other and have time to reflect on all our relations. Love, true love, is the answer to everything and no virus can kill this. During these times we maybe separated from outside, but the language of our hearts, unites us, merges as one humanity. As this virus is spreading fear and horror around the world, love may overcome it with the sunshine of our hearts and give condolence to all who have to suffer with a strong faith in God, Ocean of all consciousness in which we are a drop of it.
Allow me to share another poem that I have written recently in this connection.

Is like a virus
It needs a host
To multiply his power through:

The MTA is worse than usual. The trains are packed, no way to practice social distancing and although the mayor suggests waiting for a emptier car sometimes that’s impossible. What’s heartbreaking is the amount of homeless people I see. Not sure if they were always there hidden by the tourist. I took a walk to Bryant Park and it was completely filled with homeless people. Also I have not seen a police officer since this began. It’s starting to to feel sad and lawless. Just like a movie.
Oh wow – stay safe my friend. Gosh – makes me so sad. Yeah same here. Graffiti is up in my neighborhood. Praying for you. X

Your example about each person infecting others and how that relates to evangelism, maybe it’s just because of my background in mathematics, but that really caught my eye. I’ve heard an illustration like that once on a weekend retreat when I was in college. (Hmm, I’m going to have to write about that in my blog once, but now I don’t remember when it was… it was the place that had the foosball table, but you don’t know that story… that was during a spring break, it would have been either 1997 or 1998, I might have to go dig through old pictures someday to figure this out… I’m pretty sure I remember one older friend of mine being on that retreat, and he moved away in the summer of 1997, so we’ll say for now it was 1997. I’ll have to look through old pictures and confirm that before I get to 1997 in my own story telling. But I digress…)
So anyway, I saw the speaker (who was a leader with our campus ministry, someone I knew as opposed to a guest speaker) writing on a board; it said something like “100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000” and “2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024.” I walked up and said, “Oooh, a linear function and an exponential function.” The speaker said something acknowledging that I would know the math behind it. When it came time to actually give her talk, she was explaining about the power of discipleship. Her point was that if you preach to 100 people every year, you’ll add 100 more people who know the gospel every year. But if everyone disciples one other person for a year, and those disciples go on to each disciple one other person for a year, then after just 10 years there will be more people who have heard the Gospel compared to if you preach to 100 people every year but then they don’t do anything with it. Then she said, “And Greg can tell you why this happens.” I wasn’t prepared to speak or share that morning, but I gave a little explanation off the top of my head, about how preaching is a linear function with a constant rate of change, you always add the same number of people per year, but discipleship is an exponential function, and exponential functions have a rate of change proportional to the value of the function. So, the more people you have in discipleship, the faster the number of people increases. Everyone clapped. Not only is that important in the study of evangelism, but it also demonstrates that math is useful beyond the classroom. 🙂

Hi, I am trying to stay at home as much as possible. The only times that I have left the house was for medical appointments-dental related. I also had to go to Walmart to get a mouth guard because the dentist and orthodontist recommended it.

For those of us who were born in the stone age we look at this differently. No doubt this is serious stuff but we have seen worse. So the country is saying that we need to make some sacrifices to help? Ok we have done it before and we can done it again no big deal. We grew up in a generation that lived with the fear of all out nuclear war and those fears were real and very serious. So younger folks just relax it’s going to be ok. Maybe this would be a good time to take a hard and serious look at your life and determine what is really important.

I especially thank you for your characteristic spirit of positivity (and I do not mean that sentimentality that cannot acknowledge difficult, even horrible things, but rather your air, your eye of hopefulness that allows you to look through the shadows in search of the light). Now, the connection or, perhaps, better said, the relation between the spread of the novel coronavirus and the evangelistic effort had occurred to me. Still, your articulation of it is, for me, eloquent and persuasive. I oft have thought that life is being changed through this global viral outbreak and onslaught and that life will remain changed when this phase has passed (for, somehow, I don’t believe that we – humankind – are done with this strain or another). That said, perhaps, as you commend, should we, each and all, during this time of social-distancing and enforced isolation, renew, aye, deepen our relationship with God, then we, again, each and all, will have something wondrously spiritual and eternal to offer to others – primarily, I think, I believe, in our faithful, loving living. Again, Caralyn, my thanks to you.
