Rebuilding America

Before I start tonight, I’d like to ask a favor. If you’re like me, then you’re doing all your shopping online. Yep, I haven’t gone in a store for 74 days. I’m buying everything online. Through Amazon.

And my “ask” is that, the next time you shop on Amazon, if you could start your shopping from my Amazon homepage. It costs absolutely nothing for you, but by stopping by my link first, Amazon will give this blog a small percentage from your purchase. It is a 100% free and super easy way to support this online ministry, and allow me to continue to bring you this content for free every week. It greatly helps, and for those who are already doing this: thank you — I am so very grateful.

OK: Onto tonight’s post!

“It is what it is.”

I bet you’ve heard this saying recently. Maybe even muttered it yourself.

But this popular quarnatine-ism is — I believe — society’s way of dealing with their anger and — probably more accurately — resentment — towards the state of the world: It is what it is.

We’re picking up the pieces after an incredibly long and drawn out lockdown period that left literally millions without jobs. A lockdown that completely annihilated our thriving economy, which will take years to rebuild. Not to mention the personal loss felt by every single citizen, in some way – big or small — from plans, to finances, to travel, to socializing, etc.

It is what it is. Throw up your hands, wave the white flag, and accept the current situation.

Tonight, on this Memorial Day evening, I want to offer a hopeful juxtaposition to this common feeling of anger.

Anger — which I believe — stems from the feeling that our liberties are being squelched.

It is what it is? No — it will be what we make it.

Here we are, on the unofficial kickoff of summer, and we have a laundry list of rules and regulations that deeply impacts our wellbeing — socially, mentally, spiritually, etc.

Our freedom is being restricted. Sure, we can argue it’s for benevolent reasons, but like it or not, the way of life — the freedoms — we’ve grown accustomed to — are being thwarted right before our very eyes. And we’re letting it happen.

This is not the America I grew up knowing. One that is scared and restrictive, and resentful.

But there’s a tiny silver lining of hope in all of this, that unless we’re specifically looking for it, we’d miss it.

The America we know and love is still here — it’s just hiding in plain sight.

The America we know and love is present in the people.

We the people, of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union…

America is us. You and me. The people who make it up.

The people who will rebuild it. America will be what we make it.

We are seeing that America is compassion. It’s people helping out during this crisis.

People volunteering to make masks, to run errands for the elderly or homebound. It’s parents learning to homeschool on the fly. Children making cards for those in the hospitals. Parades and cheers for our everyday heroes.

America is the creative adaptivity and staunch perseverance we’ve seen in response to restriction and fear.

It’s restaurant owners finding ways to pay their staff, even if it’s coming out of their own pocket. It’s businesses finding ways to keep vital services flowing and fighting to stay open so there will be jobs when normalcy returns.

It’s medical companies and the government working together to find new cures, expand testing and supply PPE.

It’s not the 2% of people blasting our leaders on Twitter, or the corrupt law makers. No.

America is the goodness of humanity.

It is the ingenuity and compassion that resides in We the People — which comes to life in times of distress.

That is the America that our brave service men and women died for.

And that is the America I’m championing today, and every day.

We are the land of the free, and home of the brave.

And there’s nothing more brave than those who choose to do good for others, especially in a world that looks as it does now.

So perhaps, if we’re feeling angry, or resentful, or down this evening — thinking about the restrictions on our freedoms that are felt particularly acutely during days off, let’s choose to see the America that is still there — the America that was worth fighting and dying for.

Stay healthy, stay well, and to all the current or former service men and women and their families: I thank you for fighting for the freedom we have grown so accustomed to, here in the beautiful U S of A.

God bless you, and God bless America!

“This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

  1. Frankly, I don’t feel my freedom has been restricted. I’ve stayed home and curtailed my activities voluntarily in order to protect myself and others. Freedom is not doing whatever you please whenever you want, it sometimes means doing what’s right for everyone.

    • Hi David, thank you for sharing this powerful perspective. What a great reminder – doing what’s right for everyone. very very true. i appreciate you stopping by! have a great evening! Hugs and love xox

  2. Happy Memorial Day! And thank you for this nice call to action. I agree with you: Here’s to the power of humanity, bravery and selflessness overcoming the greed and self interests of corrupt lawmakers and people in power. Stay well and take good care!

    • Hi Ab! yes! it has been so encouraging to see the goodness of humanity rise to the surface during this time of uncertainty. It has really been a beautiful thing to see. thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful evening! Hugs and love xox

  3. You know what I love about his more than anything. Is all of those who want socialism and communism are now getting their delightful taste of it. I wonder how they are liking it? Wait until like a man from Poland told me one time, “On Monday it was bread day, and you went and stood in line for hours for bread.” “Tuesday was milk day and you went and stood in line for hours for milk.” When you ran out, too bad!.

Again as my Uncle said who served in WWII, “What this country needs is one week of WWII, then everybody would shut up and go home!”

You are right, “we are America.” But many do not see it that way. They think the government is, and that is why “We The People” are endanger of losing our freedom, not just from this virus, but from socialism and those who think they are going to get everything for free. Not realizing their taxes will be so astronomical a paycheck will be worth nothing. Which is what many in our government want.

I have a sister-in-law who lived in a socialist country. Sure they got their doctor’s appointment three months after they made it.

Yes, many good people are doing many wonderful things through this. Talk about a nation “I did not grow up in!” If you only knew the many freedoms I had and how I long for them. I fear for all of you in your age bracket and younger. Love You More! God Bless, SR

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, SR. Oh wow that’s a scary thought. Yes we have so much to be grateful for. I cannot imagine what wartime living must have been like. Stay well. Hugs and love xox

  4. Here, here! I hear and see that phrase multiple times daily. I’ve coached myself to stop when I hear it to understand the motivations behind the words when someone says it: is it fear, a lack of knowledge, apathy, resignation? Some combination of those, perhaps?
It’s often surprising to hear someone say it in response to a challenge to something they said/posted…when I hear it then, I’m often graced with an insight to someone’s motivation being that things are pretty much a-ok with them, yet they cannot articulate a defense of their position.
That makes me sad. Sad for them, resigned to live their lives “the way it’s always been” without understanding or challenging themselves to improve and grow. Or simply accepting a powerlessness to effect change so finding a sad consolation in accepting what they have.
When I’m confronted with something like that, I try to present a reasonable alternative or solution. But that’s where our country and culture needs those individual warriors who can show the spirit of our founders’ vision in modern times to ensure that America remains the melting pot the Statue of Liberty calls to in the Colossus poem inscribed at her base while still embracing the virtues of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – even if it’s in a mask every now and again.
Thanks for this post. It was motivating.

    • Thank you so much Galby! That’s a great practice: to stop and consider the motivation. That’s something I should adopt. I appreciate that perspective! Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks so much Jeff! Hope you’re having a good day off! Hugs and love xox

  5. “It is what it is? No — it will be what we make it.” If this was the only thing you said, it still would have spoken volumes!!! Great read, Caralyn! Hugs and love xoxo

    Your pal,

    Sean

  6. Thank you so much for writing this, your words are literally things I’ve thought about daily during this. The America I know is brave, positive and overcomes. This has been a tough time to live through but I see the acts of goodness and kindness and know that we again will overcome. I pray that the goodness, kindness, optimism and bravery is something all of us can find & see even in the darkest time.

    • Hi friend! oh gosh thank you so much, i’m glad this resonated with you! amen! that is the America I know and love too! i will join you in that important prayer. stay well! Hugs and love xox

  7. Very well said, Caralyn! I’ve told my children so many times that nothing is ever wasted. No experience of ours is a waste. And this time in our great country won’t be a wasted time, either, if we but handle it well and learn from – and in – it. Great blog today! Thank you!

    • thank you so much Patty! You’re so right – nothing is ever wasted. So glad this resonated with you!! amen to that! stay well! Hugs and love xox

  8. America is what we the people make it.
We learn only if we are open to learning. There is always something to learn, even if it is only, ‘I didn’t like this and don’t ever want to do it again.’

    • Hi William! You’re so right about that – we must be open to learning! i will pray that we are open to learning as a country! stay well, and thanks for stopping by! Hugs and love xox

  9. The thing about anger is that it is a secondary emotion stemming from fear. When we can get to a place of acceptance we can take a deep breath and move back into a space of love. Imagine if we all could lean into love, the ripple effect that would create could seriously heal the entire world. That’s what we need right now. Thank you for the many reminders that you articulated here my friend. Happy Memorial Day and yes, our country is us! Men and women, children…all of us and what we all have in common is love. We all deserve it and are in major need of it❤❤❤

    • Oh wow that is really fascinating about how it stems from fear. You’re right about that. And amen!! LOVE!! this was so uplifting. Thanks for sharing. Hugs and love xox

  10. Great perspective Caralyn. Don’t forget all of the frontline workers for the airlines like; Flight Attendants, Gate Agents and Baggage Handlers who put themselves in harm’s way to insure people can fly to see their family members. #COVID19 #GhostTowns

    • Thank you so much Mike! You’re so right – they are heroes too! Big time!! We have a lot to be thankful to them for! Stay well my friend! Hugs and love xox

  11. Wonderful post. And yes, there are always silver linings to be found, in America and all around the world. Stay well and positive. 🙏

    • Thank you so much Miriam! You’re right! Silver linings are important to look for today and always! Hugs and love xox

      Great post Cara.

  13. I believe something important for us to remember is that our culture works under a skewed idea of what freedom truly means (I’m borrowing from Bishop Robert Barron and the pope emeritus here). Properly understood, freedom is not the ability to do what you want, when you want. That’s a selfish take. True freedom is the ability and desire to do that which is right. if we approach our current restrictions with this change of mindset, they are still restrictions, but with not quite as harsh a feel. Hugs and love– Mike

    • You’re so right about that! that’s an important distinction to make. thanks Mike for that powerful take! stay well! Hugs and love xox

  14. I liked this post – it definitely gives me a different perspective on America. Especially when it’s had bad publicity due to the protests. I would like to visit your country one day, once this pandemic ends!

    • thank you so much Kelly! I’m so glad it hit home with you. you’re right – it’s important to remember what’s important! i hope you do!! stay well! Hugs and love xox

    • Hi Autumn! oh gosh that’s kind of you to say, thank you friend! Hugs and love xox

  15. My first memorial day in uniform was the first after 9/11. I just turned 21. We buried people all morning. Different branches. Cleaned the graves of others. I just remembered being, angry. There was, no one over 25. Minus the half dozen that died in training. You look at the guy to the left and right and you hope their angry enough to come back. Someday. Not like that, in a box. 100,000 people died of Covid. That’s a lot of boxes. A lot of anger. So. Anger, brings you home sometimes.

    • Thank you fr this powerful perspective. And thank you for your service. you’re right – that’s a lot of boxes — i pray for them and their loved ones. Hugs and love xox

      • Yes, let’s pray for them. I was poor, like really really poor that’s why I went to the military. No reason to thank me.

        This, was pretty good though.

      • When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. Isaiah 43:2.

It’s definitely hard to feel after that much loss. After my divorce, I helped out everywhere. She just, took everything and it was hard to feel. She took my kids and had this great life. I had nothing, but I survived. Then, I found ways to help others like the loaf that feeds everyone. Sacrifices of time mostly when others have lost something. It doesn’t balance things out with my life. I don’t think life or, God work that way. It’s not a perfect circle, haha. I cannot remove history, nor can I fix the weather. Prayer feels like a beacon sometimes making a person more aware of the storms others are facing.

      • thanks for sharing that powerful perspective on prayer.

  16. Back after a long hiatus!

During this pandemic, I’ve been reminded several times of Edmund Burke’s quote that men of intemperate minds cannot be free since if individuals cannot control themselves they will be controlled. And the sad truth is that we have not controlled ourselves for a long time; whether you look at the obesity rate, the personal debt, the abortion rate, we are a culture that has become hooked onto instant gratification. It’s not a complete surprise than that officials have exerted the control they have and have, in many cases, surpassed their authority. It can all be turned around but only if we realize that real freedom isn’t about gratification but is, in many cases, denying ourselves.

    • Hi Nathan, great to see you! thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. that’s a really interesting perspective on freedom! stay well! Hugs and love xox

  17. This has been one of the largest grabs of personal liberty in my life time. 9/11 many of us, out of fear allowed the government to monitor what we do, and whom we talk to. Most amercians arent even aware that the “patriot act” (the name is so ironic) is still mostly in effect, where monitoring you is easier to do for the government.

We now have another grab by the government to restrict your liberty to move about and assemble (no church for you…). It wasnt enough to support people who were at risk or afraid to stay home, NOPE it was made mandatory for all. This is an extremely slippery slope. We can debate what constitutes an emergency etc but when the government decides to act and effect 100% of the population that is a horrible miscarriage of justice, and should minimally be treated with extreme cynicism.

The worse part is many people are right on board, they are afraid I understand. Woe unto you if you have an alternative point of view (like mine), if, god forbid you are responsible and were able to navigate the pandemic without dictates. It all falls down pretty quickly, when on the one hand we can be in a walmart together, on the next we cant be in a gym. For some magical reason, Covid is more lethal in “x” venue then in “y” venue.

Have no fear though, you will be shouted down LOUDLY if you get out of line. If you think this suspect, if you resist or protest. “Right to assembly” BAH, fear won. I’ve never been so saddened to see how far we have fallen as a society. We are weak, the land of the free and the home of the brave never rang so hollow to me before then it does now.

As always your post is a hopeful one, and I am thankful for it. Many of us all we have left is hope. For many of us, dare I say tens of millions? This has been a horrific display of how far many will go to stiffle, control and manipulate. We now live in a country where someone elses fear, rational or not, can be used to govern your freedoms. The scariest part of all this is the millions of people who seem to be fine with it.

We will survive of course, but we are weaker for this not stronger. I love your content and will always read your posts, I simply cannot share your optimism on this, its been far to ugly for far to long.

You take care and thank you for providing a safe environment for my point of view.

    Karac.

  18. A fantastic post, Caralyn.! It’s equally relevant here in the u.k. and, indeed, all over the world. The goodness of God and humanity will always prevail. 🙌

    • thank you so much Jim ! yes – i believe it will! 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  19. Hey, I love your blog, but I have to disagree with you on this one. Our freedoms have been restricted because there’s a public health emergency going on – not because of some government conspiracy. Freedom is about more than just being able to do what you want whenever you want. The word pandemic is Greek in origin and means “all people.” We’re all affected by it, and in America, so far 100K people have died. I don’t think it’s a hoax, as some people think. Those were real people and real families that have lost loved ones, many of them the elderly and people in nursing homes.

I hate to be a downer, so excuse the comment. I just think the idea our freedoms are being arbitrarily reined in for no reason (or even a malevolent reason) is silly. Public health experts asked us to social distance, etc. based on science, not just their own whims. It is said that everything is political until it affects you personally. It’s easy to brush all this stuff aside and say it’s B.S., but if I or anyone else was directly affected by COVID-19, it would be a different story – just like it’s easy to say bipolar isn’t really or mental illness is B.S., unless you go through it.

    • Hey Nick! thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. You’re right – I hope it didn’t come across that I believe this is a government conspiracy , because I don’t feel that at all. You really offered a powerful perspective here – thank you for that. I hope you’re having a great week. Hugs and love xox

      • Hey. I’m really sorry about that comment. I’ve been having a tough time the past week or so, and I took it out in the comments section.

Hope you’re having a great week, too, and you’re safe and healthy.

The isolation has been getting to me and I’ve been reading the news too much. There’s so much pain and suffering going on right now and it makes my heart hurt.

But, like you say on your blog a lot, I do believe there’s a loving God we can turn to in dark times like this. We may not like the answers He gives us, but then again, it’s His will, not ours.

      • it’s quite alright Nick, I understand. we’re all just trying to make it through the day. amen – we can turn to Him. Stay well, and know that I’m praying for you 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  20. I savor the Stoic thought that this pandemic will be what we make of it. All that we truly have are our thoughts, our perceptions, and our actions. Everything else is outside us or external. Focus on what is within your control.

I prefer to think of Memorial Day as neither a holiday nor the unofficial kickoff to summer. Memorial Day is a time of remembrance … and thanksgiving … for those — my brothers and sisters — that sacrificed for the liberties that we cherish so much.

    • Thank you friend – yes. as my dad told me the other day, control what you can control. And you’re right – rememberance and gratitude!! amen! stay well! Hugs and love xox

  21. Personally I felt freer in lockdown than I had in years. Free from the insidiously nasty treatment which had been chipping away at me for years. I have come out of this grateful to God for having given me some relative ‘alone time”(I realise the terrible price, which has been paid but I am determined not to let the losses have been in vain.), to think and the space to regroup after many years of struggle. I have come out of this angry – not with governments, whom I believe in this instance, were genuinely trying to prevent total disaster by quarantining us all but anger with people, who had effectively been trying to inprison me, more effectively than any quarantine. Carolyn freedom is a state of mind, more than a physical situation. You can be wandering the world, yet have an imprisoned mind or be stuck alone in quarantine and yet find you have a mind which has finally been freed.

    • Hi friend, thank you for sharing this powerful perspective!! that is profound about freedom – a position i have never considered, but wow. very powerful. thank you! Hugs and love xox

  22. Was thinking about you today and thought you might enjoy this in your boredom. Google “Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home Caldwell, Texas Robert L. Davis” Click and then watch video. This is what we used at Dad’s funeral and it shows us and where I live etc… You will see the horses, barns, etc…. Think you will like it. I am the middle child. The one with the dark hair. Then you will know why I am the way I am. Daddy died, Nov. 22, 2019 so that is the Robert Davis. The picture you will see with him and a calf was at the Houston Livestock Show, and that picture was either in Life or Look magazine. Also you will see my favorite picture of him and Mom on Jughead (horse) Just thought you might enjoy. In fact I know you will. Am missing them both today. Love you More and God Bless, SR

    • Hi SR! oh you’re so sweet to think of me! I will certainly look up that video. thanks for sharing something so special ad meaningful to you 🙂 i am honored. praying for you 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  23. Love this! I was just thinking of “We the people…” when you said it. Great minds… I think you saw my “I Can Only Laugh” article which discussed how a JP Morgan study seems to show that the lockdown was a exercise in futility. News stories about people flaunting restrictions to crowd the beaches are painting them as the problem. Maybe they are the real patriots here. Maybe they are the real America that goes out and takes chances instead of hiding in fear. Yes: wash hands, be careful…but still live! The callback went well today. Thank you for your prayers. I’ll let you know what happens!

    • Hey hey Jeff! How are you!? You’re right – still live. I think that’s the biggest thing here – we’ve brought our lives (and livlihood) to a screeching halt. And we need to not be afraid to live! Glad to hear the callback went well! keep me posted! i’m praying for ya! bigbig hugs to you and your girls! hang in there! xox

      • You’ll be one of my first calls when I find out either way! Again, thanks for your valuable support and prayers! I pray you remain safe and healthy. Looking forward to your post tomorrow!

    • oh thank you so much 🙂 haha gosh you’re kind to say that – it certainly takes a lot less time! haha stay well! Hugs and love xox

  24. Times like these will produce amazing results, not the end. Maybe that is just me but that is what I believe. Had we become comfy Americans ? sure. But we are Americans and will endure, I think in our core, somewhere down there (go ahead, take a look) understand this. We would all love to sit in a chair and watch the world go by, but… that is not what built this country, people came here to worship freely, and be truly FREE, in every way beyond that, I think in some way that is still there… I have faith in that. As usual I give credit to you for drawing this out of me, thanks, I hope to not be a pain in the ass poster, with graciousness… me.

    • Hi David, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. you’re right – that’s not what built this country! what a great way to put it! stay well my friend! Hugs and love xox

  26. Here in the UK we have outrage over a government advisor breaking lockdown stipulations and by facing consequences. Despite us mere mortals being forced to do so.

I haven’t seen my children in weeks, months even. Because I’m still sticking to the rules, for their protection. I haven’t seen my friends from church in the same amount of time.

Because I stick to the rules.

It’s made people angry because whilst they are challenged those in authority can ignore the rules. I know people who had to miss their own mother’s funeral because they would have to travel across country.

It’s no wonder people are angry.

I hope at the end of all this there is a country left to come back to. Like the USA, the UK was so divided before all of this.

    • thank you for sharing that – it really is interesting to hear how this has imapacted people and societies across the globe. It is something that we are all in together. i appreciate you sharing your thoughts! stay well and i hope everything is okay for you. praying for ya! Hugs and love xox

  27. It is a blessing to have been given faith by the One who made us, and rely on him at all times – but especially at times like these. When we have the full understanding that real life takes place in our spirit, whatever happens in the world ceases to dictate how peaceful or joyful we can be. This freedom can never be taken away by worldly circumstances.

It is, after all, in our weakness that his power is perfected.

    • It really is a blessing. THank you so much for this insightful comment. You’re righ t- that freedom cannot be taken away. stay well. Hugs and love xox

  28. Once again you have published a well thought out and well written blog. Thanks for sharing. America is the people and now isn’t a time for silence. It is a time to let our thoughts and voices be heard. Our officials need to be reminded that they work for us and that we don’t work for them.

    • Thank you so much! i appreciate your kind words. You’re right about that!! Hugs and love xox

    • Hi Sara, gosh thank you for that honor! i am so touched! stay well! Hugs and love xox

  29. As always, beautifully written. I only now got to this, because of being by my sister’s side, but better late than never. It’s even more powerful now that so much has transpired since.

    • Thank you so much Jolie! Praying for you and your sister. Yes – so much hurt this week. Jesus, heal us! Hugs and love xox
