Impervious

Just a simple thought for tonight.

I think so often we can let our circumstances dictate our here and now. We can let outside forces, or other people, influence how we feel about ourselves. We can let a situation take the blame for a cycle of poor life choices or unhealthy habits.

I know I’m guilty of this all the time: Letting a less-than-optimal situation ruin my whole day and put me in a sourpuss mood.

And friends, that is not just emotionally exhausting, but spiritually stunting.

My new motto, which I invite you to explore with me, is to become impervious to the sporadic whims of life. To just roll with it. Be unbothered by things that would have usually sent me into negativity.

I’m going to become unaffected by the ups and downs of life, circumstances, other people, etc.

Because life is too short to let my emotions be dictated by things that are outside of my control.

I’m going to instead focus on the 3 truths that are constant and unwavering in my life:

  1. I am loved beyond comprehension by the Creator of the universe.
  2. I do not have to be perfect, and in fact – in my brokenness, I am made new, and beautifully human.
  3. There is nothing I will go through today that God and I cannot handle, together.
  4. I cannot change the minds or hearts of others, but I can be there to love them, regardless of differences.

So okay, that was actually four – a little bonus there.

But those are going to be my calm in the storm – my light in the darkness. My focus when things can seem uncertain.

Because God doesn’t change. His love for me doesn’t waiver. And it is on that truth, that I want to build my life. Not the shifting sands of this earthly existence.

Have a great week, friends.

“This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

  1. Perfect. This is exactly what I’ve been battling for the last week or so. There’s been so much out of my control and so little success at anything due to everything that’s going on these days. It isn’t about what is but we choose to do with it.

And isn’t this why we’re here as a BBB community? To hear someone else – you or commenters – to admit to the struggle and find comfort in that sharing. It’s to hear someone share three principles we already know but need to hear again. Okay…four.

    Thanks for sharing tonight!

    • Thanks Jeff 🙂 amen to that – it’s what choose to do with life! Yes!! Oh my gosh I love that thought – I have personally been so blessed by this little community and the love and support here. You’re right – we’re all in this together, and what a comfort that is 🙂 hahah four 😉 have a great night my dear friend! Hugs to you and your girls! Xox

  2. “Just roll with it.” I like it! Reminds me of a favorite quote by Aristotle Onassis:

“We must free ourselves of the hope that the sea will ever rest. We must learn to sail in high winds.”

For this post, you seem to be a counselor. I like your B3 counselor Caralyn 🎩 hat!

    • Thanks David! Oh wow I love that quote! Such great visuals – and I personally love being on the water! 🙂 haha thanks again! Hugs and love xox

  3. Great reminder with everything that is going on. We can lose our identity in the chaos or have it be reinforced by the unchanging character of God!

    • Thank you so much Michael! Amen to that – His unchanging character!! Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you Paula!! You’re right about that! Calm and centered sounds pretty dang good right about now! 🙂 Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you so much John! Sometimes the simplest things can be the biggest change agents! Hugs and love xox

  4. I was always easily amiable. If I were a girl, they’d call me Amy.

I found that it can easily take thirty years or so, of extreme Job trials, literally, to finally get one to a point where physical damage to the brain really dictates how you feel. You discover that emotions, religiousness and much of how you perceive life, can be confronted and even deleted by a succession of blood clots that physically remove your ability. One becomes like a guy without legs. How high will he jump? I have three friends that just had double mastectomies. Can they still breastfeed? No, a fourth as well.

In the same way, we cannot always dictate or decide how we want to feel or react. As the feature isn’t installed. One must get the app and AI train it all over again. I had 12 strokes, the ones that I know of, since 1995. It didn’t change my personality for the better.

  5. Hi, Beauty Beyond Bones, those observations are truths that become evident if you start to wonder about that, and that is just right for Monday’s reading. It is early in your post, I see, and I hope there are more insightful responses. It will be a curious week, but with opportunities, for reasons that are, as your motto, evident.

    • Thank you so much Odell! You’re so right about that – it will be a curious week indeed! And even more curiouser as the Fourth of July draws near. Glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  6. Lovely post for today. Thank you very much. In one of the churches I am helping, there are at least two bruised egos. I passed your post on to one of them. I told you I would always follow you….Blessings. You bring wisdom to the table.

    • Thank you Sandman 🙂 I’m glad you were able to pass this on! 💛 very grateful. Stay well! Hugs and love xox

  7. I like your resolve, Caralyn. Living in the present, and letting the negativity roll off while the positivity soaks in is a good plan. I’d like to join you! I’ll pray for our success with this. <3 <3

    • Thanks Jan! Amen to that – let the positivity soak in! Thanks for the prayers! I joint you in that!! Hugs and love xox

  8. My beloved spouse Pat very early in our marriage wrote that she felt she could face anything if I was by her side. I felt the same way. She drew two entwined circles she felt represent us as One and felt it was the best kind of marriage. But a marriage grows as C.S. Lewis well knew and eventually our marriage became God, Pat and I as ONE! Lewis believed that to be the point of marriage. Two united as one in God. God is LOVE!

    • Oh this brought a tear to my eye. How beautiful, thank you for sharing that about your dear Pat. I love that God was one with you two! I believe that too! Big hugs xox

    • Thank you Nick! Yes faith over fear! Hang in there friend! Praying for ya! Hugs and love xox

  9. I love everything about this post positivity in action! It’s all about intention and I say it’s easier to surf the waves than put up a resistance to what we can’t control. Nobody or anything has the power to truly effect our emotional state unless we allow it to. Good stuff my friend and a great way to kick off the last full week of June!! Hugs and love my dear🥰🥰🥰

    • Thank you so much! You’re so right – surf the waves! Love it! Hugs and love xox

  10. Henri Nouwen presents quite the same message in his book “Spiritual Formation: Following the Movements of the Spirit.” Really good, meaningful, helpful read. Hugs and love.

  11. Love this. ☺️Very true- I’ve been pondering the same thing, myself. It’s funny how we seem to have the same epiphanies as others, at almost the exact same times. Like a magical wave of learning strikes, and suddenly the dominoes fall. xx

    • Thank you so much Brooke! Haha yes! A wave of learning! I love that. Big hugs to you xox

    • Thank you so much Stephen! I appreciate that! (And thanks for the reblog too!) have a great night! Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you tonya for the link up! Hope you’re having a great night my beautiful friend! Hugs and love xox

  12. Oh Caralyn, you couldn’t look like a sourpuss if you tried … as is proven by your sassy photograph. 😀
This is a great post for me as, like you, I’m sensitive to what goes on and those around me. Thank you! x

    • Hahaha awww thanks Lesley, I appreciate that 🙂 hehe sassy can be my middle name sometimes haha! Thanks so much – I’m glad this struck a chord with you! Hugs and love xox

  13. Thanks for sharing! It is easy to get swallowed up by the small circumstances too; i had a flat tire Saturday afternoon. I refused it let it ruin my weekend, especially because it was Father’s Day. My tires were under warranty from Costco and 1 short hour at Costco, it was fixed! Better yet, I ran into a couple from my church whom I haven’t seen in months! Talk about divine appointment!

Christians who profess Christ as Lord need to remind ourselves Jesus is Lord and I am very guilty of forgetting who is Lord when i look at all my problems.

  14. What a power lesson. We’ll never become Christlike with the fruit of the Spirit until WE control our emotions. We must choose in every situation. Grace and strength to you as you apply this endeavour.

    • Thanks so much Michael! You’re right about that. We must choose! Grace and strength to you too my friend! Hugs and love xox

  15. Sourpuss Mood! You? I cant believe it! Seriously though, that is such good advice for us all, with our God in control there is no need for us to be in control at all. Sometimes we forget for a moment how much He loves us and the grace he has extended toward us. If we could keep that foremost in our minds we would never stress about anything.

    • hahaha thanks Veronica, yeah, I will say — it only happens every once in a blue moon, but when it does…hhaha! thanks so much for sharing your heart. amen — His grace is such a blessing! Hugs and love xox

  16. I love this post. 😍This is the only healthy way to live. Building inner strength, emotional regulation and protecting your precious energy by true control of your reactions! Loving yourself and others while keeping healthy boundaries. The way to be! Love from London ❤️

    • Hi Lisa! Oh good! i’m so glad this resonated with you! I so agree – those healthy boundaries! Hugs and love xox

  17. I’m so glad God gave us a playground, and the love to let us fall…unconditionally. Because it is the very template we need to understand and become that love 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋

    • thank you so much Mark! you’re right about that – that’s the template! 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  18. This has always been the hardest thing for me. I want things to make sense, and I have a hard time accepting when they don’t. But I know you’re right.

    • Thank you so much Greg for sharing your heart – it is definitely difficult for me as well. 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  19. While it is true we ultimately are in control of our own life, there are times that will try that knowledge to its ends. I know I have had those days and most likely will again. It takes practice to slow our minds and emotions so that we can ride it out versus doing something we really do not wish for anyone to do.

    • thanks so much Frank! I appreciate that! I like the shorter ones too! 🙂 heheh I’ll keep that in mind going forward!! hope you have a great day! Hugs and love xox

    • thank you so much! I appreciate your prayers! know that you are in mine too! 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  20. Your desire to help those who are where you’ve been is amazing. I do appreciate all your hard work each and every day. One thing to consider is that life really has two parts. How you spend your time and what you wear is physical, outside stuff, and of course you cannot please everyone. Serving our Creator is inside work–work we do on our own mind, heart and soul. We can and must grow stronger on the inside every day or we will lose touch with the real eternal world. Each morning, when we arise, we must think that, “Today I will strive to please my creator in every temptation.” We will overcome and grow more like Jesus.

    • Oh gosh, thank you for such generous words, Beth – I really appreciate that! I love that so much – yes! the two parts of life! what a profound thought! Hugs and love xox

    • thanks so much Jim! yes! 🙂 we’ve got to just roll with it! 🙂 Hugs and love xox

    • haha thank you Mel! I’m always all for a little bonus 🙂 hope you’re having a great day! Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you so much Ian! I’m so glad this hit home with you! Hahaha glad I got the A-OK! Hahah Hugs and love xox
