Embrace the Rain

Story time:

I was out to dinner this past weekend with my best friend.

We were eating at the cutest little outdoor restaurant in the West Village of New York City, dining al fresco under an, admittedly “iffy” looking sky.

You know the type — ominous looking puffy clouds, but if you’re just optimistic enough, you can trick yourself into believing it won’t rain, and will surely be a beautiful evening.

Well, that was me.

And that was definitely not how the evening ended up.

We were sitting under a canary yellow umbrella, we had just finished a truly divine meal- grilled branzino with shaved fennel, heirloom tomatoes and rocket arugula – and sipping an Aperol Spritz, when all of a sudden…the sky literally opened up and it absolutely poured the hardest rain I’ve ever personally experienced.

The raindrops were the size of golf balls, and it was as though the sky was absolutely hurling them at us, not just from the top – down, but also: sideways. And somehow…from the ground – up.

My friend and I just looked at each other in hilarious unbelief. There was nowhere for us to go: the restaurant inside was closed because of COVID19 restrictions. We were a 10 minute walk from home. And it was just us, and the barely beneficial “shelter” from the umbrella.

But as we were sitting there, laughing, getting positively soaked, I realized something:

I was having fun.

I was having an absolute blast getting drenched.

Put me in that situation — even just six months ago — and I would have been freaking out over my hair or my outfit, I would have been worried about my shoes, or stressing over getting an Uber. But not now. Not today.

And that’s because of one thing: I was embracing the rain.

Since these pandemic times, I’ve adopted a very deliberate shift in thinking…and that is to take whatever is thrown at me, and just embrace it. Come what may. Find the good, find the fun, find the humor.

Life is more fun that way.

That’s one takeaway that I’m going to carry with me for the rest of my life, that frankly, I wish I would have adopted that thinking when I was recovering from anorexia.

The embrace life’s hiccups mantra.

Because if there’s anything certain in this life — (other than death and taxes) — it’s that we will be thrown unexpected downpours while dining alfresco, every once in a while.

I mean, just look at the last six months…

The truth of the matter is that it’s okay. You get rained on…life goes on. There is beauty in the storm.

Frankly, it was a blast, sipping cocktails with my bestie with a torrential downpour happening literally right over our shoulder. It was a memory we’ll have for the rest of our lives. And to be perfectly honest — it was actually a nice respite from the 90 degree heat and 100% humidity!

But that’s the thing. Even in the most relentless of storms, there’s goodness to be found.

I was talking about this with a particular gentleman just yesterday, in regards to my mother’s stroke.

That season — though incredibly painful — brought my family so close together. It cemented a bond that we’ll have for the rest of our lives.

Recovering from anorexia — same deal. It gave me an appreciation for life, and it set me on the “right” path for my life, and rid me of some crippling cancers in my life, namely: pride and vanity.

Embrace the rain.

Feel it.

Sitting there with my bestie, I felt so alive. I felt free. I felt grateful. I felt present.

All things that come when we accept what God is allowing us to go through.

It is that peace that I pray for myself, my loved ones, and for all of you.

Thanks for reading, and next time you’re out dining alfresco – COVID style – might I suggest wearing waterproof shoes 😉

  1. Nice! Summer squalls are so interesting and it depends on where you are. I remember living in Chicago and the summer storms were great to relieve the humidity. There were days when it was 90F and 90% humidity. But in California, summer storms are so rare than when it hits in the middle of July, it is crazy because everyone drives even crazier!

    That dinner looked delicious.

    • They really are wild aren’t they? It’s like the sky just can’t take the humidity anymore so it just pops!! Oh gosh! Thanks – it was! Have a great night! Hugs and love xox

  2. This post reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: “Life is what happens to you while you are busy making plans.”

Embrace what it throws at you. That’s the stuff memories are made of.

    • Hi Robert!! Oh i love that quote! Thanks for sharing it 🙂 yep – gotta embrace it! Hugs and love xox

  3. THAT’s a great lesson to take away and carry with you: “Come what may. Find the good, find the fun, find the humor.” i’m Adopting it, too. And I won’t even mind wet toes!

  4. I love your reaction to the sudden showers, Caralyn! The food looks really delish too. 90 with 100% humidity, no thanks, it’s just 21% here. Stay safe and well! ❤️

    • Thanks John! Oh my gosh the dish was so stinkin delicious! But the company was better 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  5. Love this! ❤️🌺 I’m completely new to blogging here but I’m so glad we’ve connected. You’re a beautiful writer. Thanks so much for finding me on here. I’m really loving this creative outlet.

    • Thank you so much! Oh my gosh what a kind thing to say! And welcome to the blogging world! Hugs and love xox

  6. Two thoughts, and you probably already know them, but here we go.

I’ve heard athletes, especially football players, say that the times when they are mostly likely to get hurt is when they don’t go all out. Like you said, embrace it. Which reminds me of a movie line from, I think, Armageddon. Steve Buscemi’s character has lost it on an asteroid, and he’s riding the nuclear bomb like a hobby horse: “It’s time to embrace the horror.” 🙂

My personal favorite – “If this is the worst thing that happens to me today, it’s gonna be a great day!”

I’m glad you didn’t float away. Have a great week!

    • Oh wow I’ve actually never heard that about athletes but it makes total sense! thanks for sharing that quote! I love that 🙂 I’ve never seen Armageddon!! I’ll have to check it out! Haha me too. It was a close one! Thanks Jeff for stopping by! I hope you’re having a great Monday! Hugs and love to you and your girls xox

      • You might like Armageddon. Improbable action adventure about the US trying to destroy an asteroid that could destroy earth. A lot of humor along with the action: Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, Ben Affleck, Billy Bob Thornton, and Michael Clark Duncan. Great cast! Have a great week!

      • oh wow – what a cast!! i will certainly check it out! fingers crossed its on netflix!! Hugs and love xox

  7. I just wrote a post myself on https://www.emotionalmusings.com about how I chose to go out for a long bike ride in the rain to cleanse my spirit and bring me much needed clarity I was searching for on an issue I was facing. YES, embracing the rain is a great thing to do. On my resume I use the phrase, “I excel at making lemonade out of lemons”. Your post reminds me of that mindset and it’s a wonderful way to go😉

  8. I know. I know you’re right. But after four months of trying to embrace the best, trying to do my part, and only seeing things get worse, I can’t do it anymore. I’m just about at my breaking point today…….

    • Hi Greg, thank you for sharing your heart. I’m sorry you’re feeling down. I wish i could give you a hug through the screen! hang in there. my dad used to always say, “Things always look better in the morning.” Things can certainly feel overwhelming and insurmountable. Just do the next right thing. praying for you, friend. Hugs and love xox

      • Sorry, dear Caralyn, that I left an answer for Greg in your area, it was my feeling to write to him, however, I don’t want to appear impolite.
Perhaps this dialogue can then be continued on his or my site.
        Hugs and love
        Didi

      • I love it! i love when we are there for one another. It may be small, but i love the little community here. I pray for every one of you, and it warms my heart to see others caring for each other too. you have a big heart, and it is very inspiring

      • Thank you, dear Caralyn 🙂
Yes, it is good to help each other and give some small help in words. It also gives us the feeling: we are not alone. Thank you, my friend 🙂
        Hugs and love
        Didi

    • Dear Greg,

Please, my friend, do not give up, believe in your own strength. Life is really like a roller-coaster and sometimes the night feels endless, the darkness that touches us which holds us at times in its iron grip. Although we do not know each other, but we are all leaves on the same tree and are all more or less compassionate beings. My grandmum also used to say when things turned worse, when we had blue moments, even over a longer period of time: “When you think you are on the point of breaking, a small light is coming from somewhere.” This light is in your heart, feel it, my friend, allow it to shine in you. Every storm has an end and every night as well to bring a new morning. The sun has not disappeared, not even then when there is night time.

This awful corona time has physically separated us and we all have to suffer in one way or another, but nevertheless, it let us grow together in our spirit, in our hope, in our humility towards each other. So I wish you much strength and courage to counteract this difficult time.

My thoughts, prayers and good wishes are with you.

Take care and stay safe, dear Greg.
      From heart to heart
      Didi

      • Thank you. Some of the best friends I’ve made through WordPress have started as Caralyn’s followers who replied to comments I left with her. I appreciate it.

I know everyone is struggling. I feel like it’s been harder for me than many others because (1) I live alone and (2) I had a really stressful, bordering on traumatic, 2019 that I still hadn’t completely recovered from, and all of this hit just as I was looking forward to the rainy season ending where I am, and spending time going to basketball games, baseball games, Spring Picnic (see my “4/22/95” post for more), a concert I had tickets to in May, the fair in July, game nights and karaoke with friends… and all of that disappeared with one arrogant speech from my rich pampered arrogant state governor. And my job has also been thrown into turmoil with no suitable solution, and the virus keeps getting worse around here. The state and county governments are going after everyone except the people who are actually causing the problem (large private parties).

I know that’s the wrong way to think about this. I know that God brought this time for a reason. Maybe I need to withdraw from some of my social life. Maybe I need to put into practice all the things I hear about being flexible and surrendering my life to God’s will. But it’s hard to train my brain to think that way. I had a very difficult 2019, and all of this isn’t helping me recover from that. And the political situation in my region and state isn’t helping either. I’m just scared that all of this will never end, because that’s what a lot of people here are hoping for.

      • Dear Greg,
Thank you very much for your response – tomorrow I am going to answer your lines on your site. Now, is sleeping time for me, here, in Finland. Try to adopt positive thoughts with tiny steps as from positive thoughts, positive action will follow. Good night, my friend 🙂
All that is good for you.
        Didi

      • sending all my love, Greg. Hang in there, my friend. Praying for you, for your job situation, for finding peace in the center of His will. And for a release from any and all fear. you are in my heart! Hopefully there will be more karaoke, concerts and games in your very near future 🙂

  9. Such a good reminder to embrace those moments in our life that we just cannot control. Embrace the rain- I like that Caralyn. Life will have so many more moments of happiness when we not allow those moments to drench our joy.

  10. I’ve just finished viewing a video of an Alberta thunder storm which rained down hail the size of tennis balls. What destruction that caused! I’m thankful you were not in a similar storm. Some of the events of life do as much damage psychologically but as you point out we have a choice if those events do permanent damage or now. Keep sharing your wisdom with us 🙂

    • oh my goodness, that sounds like a wild storm!!!! i hope everyone was okay — that hail is destructive! amen to that. thanks for your encouraging words!!! Hugs and love xox

  11. The miracles that arrive in the most unexpected places are the most beautiful…because you know it was given unconditionally 😀 ❤️ 🙏🏽 🦋

    • I think you’re so right about that, Mark. Those are the most beautiful! we are so loved! Hugs and love xox

  12. Nice to read you had a fun time on that occasion. You’re such a good writer, like having presented a story, but drawn from your life. Keep up the great blogging, and God bless.

    • oh my gosh, it was the most fun! there’s a video up on my instagram of the storm!! thanks for that encouragement. 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  13. When my wife and spent a week in Kauai in 2002 we walked about a mile down one of the beaches. It started to rain (a daily occurrence on Kauai) but it didn’t stop after 5 minutes like it usually does so we jogged through the rain all the way back to our car. We were soaked through and through but exhilarated and it’s a memory of our trip we’ll always treasure.

    • oh wow that sounds like such a surreal experience on the beach! a memory to last a lifetime, i’m sure! and sidenote, i love the smell of fresh rain!! 🙂 hope you’re having a great night! Hugs and love xox

  14. Be glad it wasn’t cold rain. It started downpouring when I was driving home and I had to check my power steering fluid level (because the pump was old and leaking, making noise so it was low with fluid) and I pulled up to my driveway and I was thinking it’s not raining very hard.

Of course the rain decided to downpour as I got out. It was cold rain and I was like aah! gotta check the fluid. Not even a minute I was already soaked. The funny thing was if I had just waited a minute or two the rain would die down. I dont even remember why I drove back out though. I dont recall ever having to go somewhere else. This happened late spring if I recall correctly.

    • oh you’re right about that – that would have been miserable! oh nooooo — i’m so sorry!! that sounds just dismal. i hope that never happens again! Hugs and love xox

      • Haha it was actually kind of humorous mainly because it stopped when I went back into the car. I still dont remember why I drove back out though.

Another time it was really downpouring is I had my new Challenger out and since it’s a couple the door is a little longer. The entire inside door panel was soaked within seconds. I got home to the garage later on and wiped it clean with some shoptowels. Probably should have used a microfiber cloth, but the paper towels worked fine as I don’t have a microfiber cloth. That rainstorm was crazy though, weather app said it was clearing up. Didnt happen thst way though.

Its weird how wordpress never notified me of your comment.

      • oh my gosh that’s awful! gotta love mother nature! Hugs and love xox

  15. Ha, Ha, Haaaaa… 🤣😂😂😂You sure had me laughing right off the top with this Caralyn!!! Not laughing at you although if I was there with you at the time I would be laughing at you, the whole package would be funny, how you must have looked like a soaked pooch with all its hair matted down, and with your long hair it must have been a sight to see, a wet floor mop I have to say! On that note it reminds me of Gene Kelly doing Dancing in the Rain which is a classic scene I actually LOVE, so wow that is so cool to have inspired this idea in my head, because now I want to “dance in the rain;” not that I can even begin to dance like a Gene Kelly, but, just the frolicking in the downpour idea seems magical to me right now and you had a little magic come your way, really! I used to think that way you did, back when I was a kid with my buddies when the summer thunderstorms would move in we would go put on our swimming trunks and play to our hearts content in the rain, puddles and lie on the lawn rolling around like flapping fish out of the pond!
On a serious note to mention the vanity and pride that is good you were able to toss that burden off because we know they are actually killers and you had a case that was literally physically doing that, and, you were by the grace of God able to address it properly and with Jesus walk through the storm to the new “bright shiny day.” This brings me precisely to the one thing that came to mind this second Johnny Nash singing, “I Can See Clearly Now,” the rain has gone, which is one of my all-time favorite songs and the voice touches my soul; so see how the rain coming is good because a “bright shiny day” comes after it passes, and, it helps to wash away so much that needed to be addressed, to move on and grow too. Storms even have a place in the scheme of things as they punctuate the complacency we can fall into just being creatures of habit getting into that proverbial rut, and, the storm is a boot in the ass to shake things up but also to REFRESH! Now you must feel very refreshed and you sound like it in this essay! Look Straight Ahead, Nothing but Blue Sky All Around! Here is that Rainbow I’ve been Praying for! I’m listening to that song now it’s in my archive and Gene Kelly Dancing in the Rain Coming Right Up! You tapped an artery here girl! Holy Toledo; and I was going to say something else, LOL, but, OK, I’ll have proper etiquette and decorum. But, I needed this boot in the ass! It was a spin-off of your experience Saturday and I had a lousy one, people caused not the rain, but, that just got straightened out today and this came to top it off!
We can all be victims or champions the latter of course being the preference which we get to be with Jesus as our leader and loving Lord. Amen. 😉 🙏 🙏

    • hahah thanks Lawrence, yeah i was a sight for sore eyes to say the least. thanks for sharing your heart on this! Hugs and love xox

      • Good Caralyn… that you can take it with a grain of salt too; I do mean what I say here! Sure it may have been a bit funny, but, it was an experience that you were able to make the best of and find the good in it, because walking with Jesus we know God is the omnipotent Creator and with Him all things are possible. You take care and have a safe and happy day I hope! xox

      • Amen – with Him all things are possible! Hugs and love xox

      • Hi again Caralyn! I just finished s couple of lengthy comments as I’m sure you’re so painfully aware of how good or bad I am at doing that depending on your perspective.
But, your message here was last but not least in the cue of just a few actually the third one to read and I like how that worked out for a few reasons. I’m going to now share a large portion of the just previous comment with you and anyone interested because my hope is it will definitely help in some small way at least and maybe inspire not just you more but anyone else in need of it!
Yes indeed that’s the right formula! I tend to not let go of some things that are most of the time distractions or diversionary in nature more because of my personality and past injustices or conflicts that are still not sufficiently resolved; so I question or seek an answer, which might be leading me down a rabbit hole. I spoke to a friend of mine who has much experience more than I’ll ever have in dealing with these types of conflicts that come up in the corrupted system, which I see now are increasing all over the place mainly because people are getting more agitated and confused by world events. I believe there is no doubt some spiritual warfare is going on in some of these situations, but, I determined today that some things are better being let go of entirely and moving on to more vital pressing matters of concern. To “let go and let God” is the best catch phrase I come up with that fits this. So, I did that with this unexpected twist over the last couple of days which appears to be mainly diversionary and a waste of my time. I did some research just now which has been ongoing regarding prophesy, revelation and my need to discern the essential truth in all things as best as I possibly can.
Here are a couple of excerpts I think will be of interest and I hope can be inspiring to anyone that reads them.
Genocide and plans of evil men
“My dear child, you must ask everyone to ask for God’s Mercy in all those matters, which involve the destruction of humanity. I refer to the wicked plans involving wars; plans to introduce a global vaccine – which you were warned about in the message of 26 November 2010 – genocide and the murder of Christians, as well as other people of different religions, by the hands of evil men.
When a soul is infested by Satan, it is capable of the most intense hatred for God’s children. When groups of men work together, in complete subjugation to the evil one, their wickedness is manifested in every act so as to cause death and destruction to those over whom they control.” (18 Sept. 2014)
But, here is something I find of special interest that aligns perfectly with what you said!
“In spite of this tragic event surrounding us it is also a time that God pours out abundant graces. For one, this lockdown and isolation situation gives us ample time of reflection, of prayer and repentance. The ‘I’m busy excuse is no longer an excuse. Let’s pause and truly ask ourselves what’s important. If we still fail to reconnect ourselves to God at this time then it only means one thing — we love ourselves more than the one who created us and gave us life –God.”
Then this comment was made on another related blog discussing these matters which really was so well said I think it’s definitely worth sending it out.
“Brothers and sisters, this is a spiritual battle. Pray. Fast. Do Penance. Trust in Jesus. The Holy Spirit will assist us, and give us the right words at the right time. Many of us will have to resist unto blood, but will receive the White Robe of Martyrdom. In the end, Her Immaculate Heart will Triumph. Ave Maria.” missionofsalvation.com

So Caralyn…I think we can make things more complicated too easily if we want to allow that or we can keep it simple and follow this basic train of thought and put all of our heart into seeking God’s will by first being completely humble not allowing self or ego to cloud our motivations and then to carefully discern what God is telling us by the Holy Spirit and the things going on around us that all contain a reason and purpose in His plan. Thanks for the added inspiration! 🤗
        Brother in Jesus Christ,
        Lawrence

      • You betcha Caralyn! But, I do that even when people don’t want to hear it! Makes me so lovable! People can be so much in a hurry and uninterested or is it disengaged? Just read on twitter Kayne West already took off to the hacienda which I knew he would the same moment I heard he threw his hat in the ring! With that quackery-barrel of Dems that started in the primary and the now Dem chosen one Biden did he think he could outdo all that; certainly no contest with the Donald! I guess we can see what a little fame and money will do to a person’s head!

      • Funny how your message just came in the cue as number three as I was finishing up the previous long text! God’s Holy Spirit is so wonderful! The Comforter is there when we ask for His help! God Bless You! xox

    • Thank you!!! Hahah it was quite and unforgettable experience, that’s for sure!! Have a great day! Hugs and love xox

  16. Lovely write up Caralyn. That was a crazy storm. From the thunder and lightning to random sun showers and storms here. The rain is nice in the hot humid summer here. It can temporarily cool things off. Your attitude is the right one now.

    • You’re so right – there really is!! Thanks for stopping by!! Hugs and love xox

  17. I needed that, Carolyn. You had me at the title, “Embrace the Rain,” just as I was checking the weather and worrying about our next rainfall as our house currently has leaky roof issues. Because of that, I do fear rain (which is rediculous, I know). Your post reminded to look for the good, keep trusting God, and take things as they come. Blessings! 💕

    • Oh good! I’m so glad this resonated with you Hannah! Oh no!! I hope there are clear skies ahead!! Amen – trusting Him! Hugs and love xox

  18. My dear friend Caralyn,

Often it is the case that we can only accept life if it corresponds to our wishes and ideas. We want to control it with it, direct it where would like it to be. But life is like a great teacher, it comes with unexpected events and sometimes hits us with hard lessons. If there were no problems, no things we actually dislike, we would remain in a spiritual, blind state. So we learn from good and bad things, from a mix of sweet and bitter medicine. So when we learn to accept that we cannot control everything, then such unforeseen events that take place in our lives are welcome “guests”.

Pride and vanity are among the colours of the ego, of the mind. Once these are overcome, once we become aware of what they mean, they sink into the water of insignificance to allow humility, appreciation, and acceptance to emerge slowly as a delicate plant to the surface of our own spirit. This humility is the opposite of ego and I-reflections, it grows in the understanding and turns to life compassionately. Rain and sunshine let plants blossom – also the human spirit…

All the love for you and your family, dear friend
Be embraced from heart to heart

    • Hi Didi, thank you for this beautiful reflection! You’re so right about that – humility, appreciation and acceptance – those are three things I strive to be every day. Amen!! Very touched by this. Hugs and love xox

  19. I write about this all the time… rain used to be like some crazy death spiral, we run from it, we flee, but why? I learned to embrace it, granted I do not have to worry about makeup and such so I do not want to discount that… but “singing in the rain” and dancing in such is a great thing… last year on the hottest days I walked out onto my lawn in the rain, bare foot, and just felt it all, it is amazing, I tell everyone to try it, rain is cleansing, dare I say baptizing? it reminds us of cleansing and how life is provided from water… at least to me, thanks again C for the inspiration.

    • Hi David – that’s awesome – yes! Singing in the rain! Haha such a great song and great message! Hugs and love xox

  20. I love your beautiful story it’s very interesting, I love wise words, you truly express your inner being, I love it, wish I can be able to talk with an online therapist… I really enjoyed your story❤️🌹

  21. To every person’s life a little rain must fall. Let the golf ball size drops come. Bring it on!!! As long as they’re not actual golf balls.. 😛

    • You’re so right about that! bring it on! hahaha oh my gosh – yes that’s an important stipulation! hahah thanks for stopping by! have a great evening! Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you so much Darlene! So glad it made you smile! 🙂 have a wonderful afternoon! Hugs and love xox

  22. How you respond to things really is what dictates how your life will be.
Been learning how to just be thankful in all situations and just embrace life
This is super important and really cool post
    Thank you 🙇🏾‍♀️

  25. For some if not all of us,it’s interesting how our priorities have shifted. We have all had a shift of some form or another. Some have become more passionate about the issues of the day, I guess they have to diffuse their pent up angst somehow. Vanity has pretty much gone out the window for me. I used to never go out without makeup or my hair done and now what the heck. My mask covers most of me anyway, so I toss my hair on top holding it in place with a clip and voila’ I’m done and out I go, when I go.

    • Thanks Jolie! That’s such great insight. Yes! Our priorities have shifted. For the better I think! And I agree – it has for me too!! Glad this sparked some thoughts for ya! Thanks for stopping by! Have a lovely night! Hugs and love xox

      • I kind of got behind, so not read everything that’s come across, but we’re on lock down again, so I’m trying to get some rearranging here at home and catching up on blogs. But, yeah. thanks. I love summer rains too, glad you had fun!

      • Oh no not lockdown again!! Gosh Stay safe friend!! Hugs and love xox

      • Thank you. It’s a pain. It’s been modified some, but they’ve already closed salons, gyms, restaurants and bars while trying to pass temporary laws and ordinances to allow these to service folks outside. So far most stores have limited access, ugh.

    • thank you so much!! 🙂 I agree! although my friend and I just got back from breakfast, and we got caught in the rain! talk about soggy toast! haha Hugs and love xox
