NYC is not safe anymore.
And it’s because the city desperately needs police presence.
I don’t have to tell you about society’s current tidal wave of hatred and detest towards our men and women in blue. Battle cries to “defund the police;” publicly canceling anyone who even considers that “blue lives matter.” There is a quelling uprising against law and order, and while – sure, it may seem “woke” and a noble bandwagon to jump on, the fact of the matter is, there are serious consequences to alienating those who are there to protect and defend. And that is being seen in full scale in Manhattan, no matter how much the mainstream media may try to downplay it.
(And Mom and dad, I apologize ahead of time for the worry this post may ignite. Please know that I am being safe, taking precautions, and frankly…not doing anything stupid to get into a dangerous situation.)
My friends and I got back from Maine on Monday night at midnight. And the city was lights out. Dead. For a city that used to literally never sleep — where you could go out at any time, on any day, and see swaths of people milling around — it is alarming that Manhattan is so quiet. And why? Because half of New York has left, and those that have stayed behind are scared to go out past 10.
Outdoor restaurants close at 10 pm. Historically 24-hour CVS’s, bodegas, and diners — now all close at 10. Parks – which have never been gated up…now, locked with a chain and padlock at 10.
Why? Because it is no longer safe to be out after dark.
Perhaps you may be thinking I’m overreacting. Sure…just a typical overdramatic millennial who’s extra skiddish because she’s a young woman who lives alone. Please. I have never once felt scared in NYC. Ever. Until now.
It was such a shock to go from “Mayberry,” Maine back to Gotham. The night my friends and I got home, I got a text from one of my friends — that morning, there was an arrest made in her building. A homeless man had been living in her stairwell for MONTHS, and had been stealing packages. This was in a super nice building on the Upper West Side — arguably one of the nicest, most affluent neighborhoods in Manhattan.
A man. Living in her stairwell.
Which is particularly alarming and crazy, because she had been getting her packages delivered to my doorman building for quite some time now, because all of her packages were going missing.
Crime is up.
You may recall the incident I had just a few months ago: where a BLM radical YouTuber accosted me outside my building, and forced me to get on my knees and hail BLM while he livestreamed it. I was one of a string of young women he “vlogged” that day.
Graffiti tags are absolutely everywhere. The population of homeless people has soared, and so has their boldness. My friend was curtly confronted by a homeless man who pressured her into VENMOING HIM money, when she explained she didn’t have any cash.
My “neighborhood watch” Citizen Ap on my phone pings incessantly throughout the day and night, notifying me of crime in my current vicinity. Unsettling reminders for sure.
These are not just isolated incidents. Homicides. Robberies. Burglaries. All have skyrocketed recently. And why? Because cops are afraid to do their jobs anymore.
Why put your life on the line, when — if you act to defend yourself, it could be filmed and end up on national news where you’ll be labeled a racist, and prosecuted?
They’ve had enough. And so they’re walking off the job. In startlingly large numbers.
The NYPD has recently cited “ongoing challenges,” including an “increase in retirements” and “deep budget cuts.”
That is terrifying information. Terrifying.
In case you missed it, back in June, one billion dollars was cut from the NYC police budget. And the impact of that are now beginning to be felt.
What is going to happen to our country if law and order is not the backbone of society? Truly? What will our world become?
Now here’s the tough part. Because yes – we need to support our men and women of the badge – but it is also true that there are “bad apples” that are drawn to the allure of the police force, and the power and -sadly, weaponry- that goes along with it. But to completely throw the entire baby out with the bathwater, just because of a problematic bunch…it is wholeheartedly unwise.
Are the horrific and heartbreaking incidents of unjust police brutality that have happened in recent months absolutely unwarranted, unjust, and deserving prosecution? One hundred percent yes.
But those handful of terrible, terrible incidents do not color the vast majority of blue men and women who truly have dedicated their lives and their livelihoods to protecting and serving the community, and keeping people safe.
It is a job that I cannot imagine waking up and doing every day.
And it is a job that, yes, probably should have more training and vetting, and support, and accountability, than it currently does.
But we need to support law and order in this country. Without it, we are creating a scenario ripe for malice, and foul play, and all sorts of corruption. A scenario that we are beginning to see play out in Manhattan.
Yes – we need to stand up for the innocent lives lost to unjust police force. We need to demand justice for Brionna Taylor, for George Floyd, and for those heartbreaking examples of lives lost at the hands of cops.
But we need the police.
If that means supply more adequate training – so be it. If that means more checks and balances within the system – full steam ahead. If that means a stricter vetting process to become a man or woman in blue – let it be done.
But we need the police. And we need to support the police.
Lord, may the civil unrest that is plaguing this country come to a peaceful end. May our brothers and sisters see one another as just that: one family — one human race, all with dignity and inherent value. May we come to respect one another and earnestly desire to work together to come up with creative and effective solutions to make each and every person in this country feel safe, and supported. And may any tinges of racism be expunged from the hearts of those harboring such darkness, and be replaced with Your love — a love that sees the dignity and value of each and every human life – from conception to natural death. Amen.

I was just thinking the other day(I have no evidence whatsoever to prove this.)that the general emptiness of streets worldwide, may be making those who are around, more vulnerable. As for the homeless, I believe the UK government is making a real effort to get everybody off the streets and into decent accomodation. Unfortunately it seems to me that many things happening in The US may actually be driving more people onto the streets. As I understand it,( forgive me my only source is Oprah here,

Hello Caralyn! I’m happy to say we are on the same page in more ways than one; of course from this one that you explained well and also my most recent writing! I alluded to this fact slightly in one of my last long comments to your blog ever so gently in order not to scare you more than I was sure you might be already. I said to your announcement of planning a trip back home to visit family soon, that I was very glad to hear that; as the big brother or even paternal instinct just kicks in with me, but, mainly because though I give you credit surely for doing so well and hanging tough I see it as a worrisome circumstance for you and any women caught up in life in the fast lane! I have much I want to say and think I should but I’ve already gone much further than I was planning to here! So if you can indulge me and do me a great favor if at all possible would you check your email which I believe wholeheartedly will be good for both of us; I do worry as well as my being persistent when I have something very important to say come hell or high water nothing will stop me, and, I’ve had some powerful people in recent years who by their nefarious undertakings put me at complete odds with them just by my being who I am and where I am, but, I made sure they understood my meaning that nothing will shut me up if I see that I should speak out about great injustice other than me having my lights put out; and if that had to happen then so be it, though in my heart I always prefer to be planting seeds and trying to take the high road and show people even those that hate me that there is a better way and we don’t have to be adversarial; but, like I said if I’m a goner I’m sure God has it covered as to who will either take my place or what plan will unfold to cover all the bases that I left behind anyway! It goes without saying really, that you will keep praying and stay vigilant so that is a comfort, but, still be very careful and please don’t take any chances at all. I know I’m saying something that’s certainly been coming at you consistently by so many dearly loved ones, yet still, it’s sort of an obligation with me when I put my mind to something like this, and, none of us can ever have enough prayers or goodwill come our way due to the fact that we’re all still far from being home free just by the fact or by virtue of our being here in this life.

Amen Caralyn, well said! What Cuomo and DeBlasio have done to NYC is disgusting! There was a crime stopper video on Twitter the other day of a man attempting to rape a woman in broad daylight in NYC. People filmed him and he stopped. Nobody did anything. They just filmed him attacking the poor girl. It is total insanity! People better vote all those tyrant liberal traitors out of office. Getting rid of police is dead wrong. Romans 13:1-7 is clear about God establishing authorities to punish wrongdoers. We must have law and order. We are living in a time where people call good evil and evil good. Thank you for speaking the truth! God bless and be safe! Maybe it’s time to leave NYC. We just left Colorado for Florida and we love it down here. Governor DeSantis is the man! Lots of cops down here and plenty of law and order…lots of sunshine too.😊

As always, the answers are in the Bible. Here St. Paul tells us that this is part of what government does. It’s government’s job to combat evil behavior. But Godless, lawless people with no understanding of how God ordered things, no Biblical foundation are doing stupid things like calling the police bad and criminals good. Isaiah wrote, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil.”
You likely saw pictures from Portland where the mayor didn’t support the police, and now the rioters have tried to torch the mayor’s house! Who ya gonna call? When will the pendulum swing back to law and order? How long. Too long, I think!
Maybe you don’t want to go home at the risk of infecting your parents, but what about one of your siblings? Stay with them for a time. I lived in downtown Detroit for three years and NEVER had a problem. But if things had gotten as bad as NYC now is, I would’ve left quickly. What about Chicago for acting central? I had a friend from grad school, Maureen McDevitt, who made a great living there doing industrial films and regional commercials. Chicago isn’t as bad as NYC – I’ve spent a LOT of time there.

Interesting post. Unfortunately, this is the result of many things happening at once right now – a deadly pandemic, extremely divisive politics, a failing economy, etc. These are scary times, I agree. I wrote a post about this recently, too, more so about the incredible uncertainty we’re going through. We’ve been lucky to live in such a safe and rich nation, and now we’re starting to experience problems that we used to see on TV in foreign lands. Such is life.
I do have political beliefs and persuasions, but it hardly matters anymore. I usually lean left and vote Democrat. But right now, in a world and country where we can no longer agree on anything, it no longer matters. People on the right and left are now ready to kill each other in the streets, people showing up to protests with assault rifles, people signing up for militias.
Really, I’m just holding my breath until the election in November. It seems pretty certain that no matter who wins, there will likely be a constitutional crisis and both sides will claim the vote was rigged. Welcome to 2020.

We have had a couple of police incidents in Dallas, too. My heart breaks for the families of those killed needlessly. However, I truly don’t understand the ‘defund the police’ idea. I am grateful for all the good police officers out there.

Sorry I hadn’t finished- I believe most people in the US are only one missed paycheck from the streets. We had a homeless guy living almost outside. I know this is not quite New York City but he could still be intimidating. Yes he got told off by the police. I noticed he became more aggressive when it was cold and wet. I dropped off a cheap rain cape by his blankets. Before long he had even been given a portable bed and blankets. People were always leaving him food. A local cafe must have been giving him free soup because when I offered to give him soup., he told me he liked the stuff from the local cafe, which I cannot afford myself. He stayed all Winter and he was no longer a problem. To be honest I became quite fond of him.I missed him when he disappeared. My ex’s uncle died on the streets here, I was very worried for him. I used to up to homeless people in London too and at least try to buy one of them a warm drink. I remember being scared. The guy was sleeping in a box. He just looked up at me and said, “Thank you.” I do not give money but I often try to give people food and drink.

Okay, a couple of things here, coming from an African American woman, educator and Christian. First, it is Breonna Taylor not Brionna. Second, defunding the police does not mean canceling the police. I do not know what news outlets you have been reading, but defunding the police means equally dividing money and giving it to different areas that can stimulate society socially and economically. For example, social work services, EDUCATION (severely underfunded), foster care, all of these different areas affect not just black lives but impoverished folk. Like the homeless man in the apartment stairwell.
Your platform is pretty big. Please perform thorough research from the actual people facilitating these conversations, so you can gain a thorough understanding. This is how misinformation spreads.
Read what black lives matter and other organizations mean when we say “defund the police”, historically speaking law and order has a bloody history. The true origin of police was founded not to protect but to control and perpetuate systemic racism and economic oppression in America. Thereby, maintaining the status quo.
Finally, this may or may have not been your first experience, experiencing racial tension. As a Christian, I encourage you, to not think about yourself, but other people who are suffering harsh realities–not as a comparison, but a genuine realization that the reality in which you live is a bubble. People before George Floyd were dying and after. This is the real work Jesus was speaking. And it’s not always comfortable.
She is so busy quoting the Bible and pretending to love everyone as she tells them how bad NYC is. Never has she thought for a moment what’s it like to be anything but a privilege white woman(not her fault). She feels better quoting the Bible and really not living it. So many people pretend to love God yet hate their neighbors. No I don’t think she hates her neighbors. However I don’t think she would know Jesus or God if she saw them. She knows that people “look up and respect Christians “.
Tory, you do have to admit the whole defunding thing is a bit confusing. As Caralyn mentioned, Mayor De Blasio and NYC council CUT one billion dollars from the police budget. That’s not a reallocation or re-education, but a cut. And while you’re right about BLM’s position, others have taken a different tone:
Rep. Ilhan Omar “The Minneapolis Police Department has proven themselves beyond reform. It’s time to disband them and reimagine public safety in Minneapolis.”
This is especially scary (and irresponsible) coming from a sitting congress woman. I am all for police reform, and I believe all caring people want justice but reactions like this are not helpful.
Meanwhile, NYC is not a safe place for anyone right now. And that’s not solving anything, only making the problem worse. Peaceful protest, yes, rioting and looting, no.
It is confusing if you, yourself as an adult who knows how to read and write are not taking the proper steps to educate yourself. Second, what Mayor De Blasio cuts I would not reinterpret that as defunding the police, especially if actual educated people of color are not apart of the conversation and helping to relocate funds to support all people. Especially poor people.
Next, people are scared and rightfully so. However, now is the time for you to pick what side of history you shall be on. Police reform because it disrupts the status quo makes people uncomfortable. The status quo, which has for decades and centuries been built upon the backs of immigrants, people of color, slaves, and indigenous folk is coming to an end. Many people are waking up that this country was never founded on Christianity, but a Westernized-watered down version of it, which validated the mass murder of millions of people using out of text scripture.
People are scared of change. Next, your comment adds nothing to the conversation
You say, “I am all for police reform,” but follow up “reactions like this are not helpful.” If you care about everything you stated, you would not have followed up with “reactions like this are not helpful.”
Because you are dead wrong. Calling out privilege, especially in relation to Christianity is essential for unity. We must be honest with ourselves before we share our ignorance and biases with others. Because GOD SEES THE LIES.
Also you are implying the “angry black woman” stereotype. Let me be clear I have every right be upset about these injustices and I do not care if you view them as helpful. Because this is not about you.

The fore-bearers of America most certainly were not perfect human beings but there has never been any nation built in such a way on this earth! I’m not sure if anyone else has already said this, but, I paused my feelings and my emotions from leading while reading your post, which I must say IS BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN.
I discussed it with my husband about how I understand your point/argument/perspective. And I agree with you. TOTALLY, 100%. But I also noticed that this blog post was missing a part of you, as if you supressed much of your passion and joy in writing, shoved a fraction of yourself into a corner of the room, and gave us this. This was safe. I applaud your penmanship and your pristine use of language. Girl!!! GOOD JOB!!! EXCELLENTLY WRITTEN!!!
But I didn’t like it, because it didn’t really feel like you. After feeling everything you allowed me to feel, you pulled back. And I get it, you have to be safe and smart. So I get it. But I miss the days when we could all be free to be ourselves and not be judged unjustly, often being asked to pay the bill for other people’s offences. I’m sorry if you’ve ever had to deal with that, so very sorry my love.

So in conclusion, my dear, my husband and I realized, that the experience you’d just described, was what we’ve often seen displayed in the movies as Black Struggle and Black Communities, Ghettos, Hoods, Projects, etc. You had just, almost barley, skimmed the surface of the “Black Experience”.
I’ve never lived like that. But I’ve seen it. And it bothers me just as much as it bothers you. Your situation right now bothers me, just as much as it bothers you. And I’m with you. Let’s find creative ways of getting on with this new normal. Making some tough decisions. Facing some hard truths. Letting some people go. Dreaming big. Stepping on. And finally just being able to BREATHE AGAIN.

Because you’re absolutely right – I played it safe with this post for fear of saying the wrong thing and really REALLY upsetting people. Ok let you in on a little known tidbit – my last super polarizingly political piece about trump was discovered by a close friend who is a very empassioned liberal. And this person completely wrote me out of their life after reading it. Blocked me from all social media. Never spoke or returned my calls again. Left our friend group. Police are needed and if they cannot control, then something else needs to be done. Black lives do matter but so do all lives. We are all created by God. And I’m sorry to say this, but going to anyway. All women go to the bathroom the same way and all men do too. No one is better than anyone else in this world. We all matter. On point! I’m not really sure why people would like to defund the police, the same people who make their streets safe. I just can’t see the logic in that. 🙁 Instead of throwing out the police, why not support and improve them. Sadly, these people would seen see how they are destroying themselves from within.

Aren’t law and order and our justice system why we fight wars with other countries? To help them defeat their unrest and chaos? And create a peaceful government that resembles ours? Yet the exact same things are now happening here on US soil. In a way, we have become what we were fighting against for others. Sounds kind of like our country needs to do some self care for itself first, before trying to help others! We’ve got to fall back, regroup, and put our own oxygen mask on before putting someone else’s on. Because if you die from lack of oxygen, you are no help to anyone else. Just like if you don’t take care of yourself in recovery, you can’t help anyone else!

Imagine as a black person going through this everyday. We are treated like sh-t. And you are complaining about safety. Me and my mom where pulled over because the policeman said it didn’t look like we should be turning down that road. She had to show him her license which showed she did live down that road. And that it was a bs reason to pull us over. But he was hoping to get some type of bust. We are assaulted by the police everyday and yes you can feel unsafe today. But it is another thing to be you. We feel hunted everyday just for being black. The people that protect you are the ones that wants us dead. I know this. I was a policewoman. We were sent to the NCO club because our police sergeant knew it was closing. Blacks hung out there. No other reason. Have you ever been treated like are less than an animal. More people are upset when a dog is killed before a black person. Yes we may need the police. But we don’t need them to kill us simply because we are black

Defunding the police is backwards thinking. We need forward thinking in terms of training, community outreach AND most importantly, these officers have to be able to seek professional help. Without being punished for doing so. Many cops also serve our country, so you figure they’re deployed on the other side of the world for a year or more, they come back and go right back to police work. No down time. How can that be healthy?

Antifa and BLM are not who they present themselves to be.
Antifa means anti-fascist. The were started in the 20s against facism. BLM means Black Lives Matter. They are trained communist. Both organizations have their roots in Communism. The don’t seek to stand up for the rights of the individual. Rather, they seek controversy. That’s why all the rioting. They don’t seek peace, but rather to tear down society. They will both be vanquished.

We do need police and President Trump concedes there are bad apples in the force just as they are in any other branch of society so those bad apples need to be weeded out without destroying an institution set up to protect us all. I liked your prayer which indicates we all originated from the first parents Adam and Eve. So showing respect to each other would be the first move toward a more ordered society and that respect has to come from all of us not just those we don’t like for whatever reason. However human nature being what it is that probably is a big ask. I think its safer for you to find another location to live for the present. My grand daughter lives in NY and I fear for her too.

Last year, there was a police officer in the big city next to my suburb who was shot and killed during a routine domestic dispute call. When other officers came to peacefully set up crime scene tape, a group of neighbors started heckling them and saying they all should be shot. And this was over a year ago, before all the recent incidents started. I’m starting to fear that we’re either headed toward a second Civil War, or at best a semi-peaceful breakup of the United States, because the left and the right are so far apart on values and lifestyle that these tensions are inevitable. And of course that brings up the question of whether I need to move far away to another state, because I certainly don’t share the values and lifestyle of most people here, but that is a very complicated issue. Moving away would be a huge pay cut, and I’d experience other kinds of culture shock wherever I ended up. And Christians aren’t supposed to feel comfortable anywhere in this world. I should be seeing this state as a mission field. But am I really doing God’s work when I’m in such a toxic environment that I’m angry and depressed and afraid all the time? I don’t know…

I was frustrated too with where used to lived Big issues with drugs-many social issues. Day after day I listened to women, who were subject to abuse both by their partners and their “friends.” I was supposed to be the one with the problematic relationship but I knew many of them were in at least as much trouble as I was. They felt safe opening up to me, as my own relationship was such a trainwreck. I have always been the place people come when there back is against the wall. Did I make a difference? I doubt it. I remember one Christian friend opening up to me. On the surface, she had the perfect relationship but later I came to realise that she was actually in a worse situation than I was. I tried to make my kitchen table a place where these women could be raw and honest. That was the one contribution I could make. They all knew my relationship was a disaster. It made them feel safe to open up.
Perhaps this isn’t a solution to the problem, but is it possible to leave NYC? Do you have to stay there for work or could you move elsewhere?
It’s disturbing that so much crime is happening in NYC and I wouldn’t feel safe living there either.

You’ll have to weigh the pros and cons. Remember, you can always return to NYC. Moving to a new place doesn’t have to be forever. I can imagine that leaving friends behind would be hard but it gives you a good excuse for more road trips, phone calls, and Zoom meetings. Moving to a new place can be exciting too. Good luck! 🙏🏻💕

Hi Caralyn. I think we both agree that we need some form of public safety to keep people safe, but I think we diverge on some premises and are coming from different points of view, so I thought I’d share (since I, too, am from NYC).
I hate to be *that* person who’s like “your stats are wrong” (because believe me, I’ve been there as a blogger before and it’s rough), but actually, per NYPD data, crime is down citywide for the year by a little over 2.4%: https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/nypd/downloads/pdf/crime_statistics/cs-en-us-city.pdf. I will add that there are spikes in certain kinds of crime that are alarming; particularly, rises in gun violence (murder) and burglary. And there may be certain neighborhoods where crime overall is increasing; I don’t know if your neighborhood is one of them, but you can find out by looking up the stats for your own police precinct if you’re so inclined. But as a whole, throughout New York City, crime is down.
Stats aside, I’m coming from a lens where my brother, myself, and none of our white friends were stopped and frisked, while lots of my brother’s middle school friends (Middle school!) talked about “walking while brown” (in other words, 11-13 year olds getting stopped and frisked, even though they were not really doing anything wrong). A lens where my brother would go with friends of color to the subway, and he was allowed to go on by NYPD while all of his friends of color were pulled aside to be searched by the NYPD. A lens that heard numerous tales about disproportionate use of stop-and-frisk and other unjust policing practices by people of color (and tales backed up by statistics). There is a lot of anger with the NYPD, and frankly, a fair amount of it is justified. But personally (albeit, coming admittedly from the point of view of someone who has not been harmed by racial disparities in policing as I am not a person of color), I think that the most productive way is to try and really get to the root of these racial inequalities instead of well-intended band aids that are nice for a time but don’t address systemic issues (for example, the end of stop-and-frisk was needed in my opinion, but the root of racial inequality in policing was not addressed by simply ending that policy).
My apologies if my rant here is a little bit long or takes away from your post. Hopefully, my post gives some food for thought, regardless of whether you agree with me at all or not. Which is maybe the biggest goal of this long comment, because if you vote in New York, there’s a mayoral election next year, and most certainly one of the major issues candidates will have to answer (and one thing you’ll have to discern between candidates) is their philosophy about policing.

you are younger than me, I remember the city as a cesspool and out of control violence of the dinkins era, I was held at gunpoint @ 14 and lost my gold chain with a Mezuzah on it … I have not worn jewelry since, rudy changed the city and now it has descended into craziness in a matter of months… is this a test? or just a repeat ? I do not want to paint democrats as bad people, because they are not generally, but their policies and opinions lead to this… sadly. the only choice is to be the light…. so just be the light, we can discuss it, we can debate it, but being the light is the only solution in the face of darkness. I am not a christian, I am not religious but I do believe that good triumphs evil in the end…. I understand your frustration and encourage you to forward on, what else is there?

I am really sorry that you were harassed in such a manner. I would have liked to know what that youtuber would have done if you didn’t bend a knee.
Personally, I would have stood my ground. Regardless of what they did. I don’t cave to bullies.
I never supported the BLM, because they actively support known criminals. They make radical martyrs of these individuals who were “attacked’ by the police. Never mind that there were warrants for their arrest. Never mind that they were high on drugs. Never mind that they attacked and raped girls.
Can you imagine how the victims of those criminals must feel; to see these people labelled as heroes when they clearly are not.
Anyone who supports the BLM have not really taken the time to read their mission statement. They are not for black lives. They are not for any lives. They are about destruction of government and families in the pursuit of a socialist agenda.
I watched in horror as people who are just innocently eating a meal at a cafe, being harassed. Videos online show protesters harass an elderly couple crossing the street. The old woman needed a walker. #Heartless
The number of businesses that have been destroyed by the BLM; especially ones that openly support their cause. They sure have a funny way of appreciating people that support their cause.
And the level of hypocrisy from the Democrat party is unbelievable. Mayors of towns supporting the riots and destruction; just as long as it is not in their neighborhood. Anyone approaching that section of the city will be arrested and charged.
Its interesting that you mentioned Gotham. Because what we need is a Batman to fight along side the boys in blue against the criminal element that has claimed many major cities is your country.

Personally I would get out of New York. Maybe that why you had such a good time in Maine. You might not think living in that Environment is harmful but it is, mentally. How better would it be to wake up in the country were you can go for walks and breathe fresh air. New York will always be there.

This whole virus and global unrest, is affecting us all in ways we don’t even know. What I recommend is that you move somewhere for 2-3 weeks, maybe a friend can put you up, and experience being out without actually leaving, if you know what I mean. Then see how different you feel. Been a creative person you will know if its helping you almost instantly.

It’s all abstract until it happens to you to someone you know. I recall a time when NYC had extremely high crime in the 70’s -80’s. It got cleaned up and the city prospered. Its unfortunate how far some will go to further a political agenda. Im thankful I dont live in a city anymore.

I think the whole mistake was to use the words, “defund the police” and it becomes the battle cry for all who want change. We still need police and the strategy needs to be “refocus the police”. In regards to BLM, I agree the pendulum has swung too far back the other way, but that was also the case in the Women’ Lib movement for a while. The problem is the whole “them against us scenario” promoted by 400 years of abuse and by opposing views and politicians to get reelected. As long as we are divided and opposed, we can never exist together. Sanity has to come to both sides of any disagreement and inciting riots by forcing compliance (“Might makes Right” or “Law and Order”) is also not the way. While many demonstrations start out peacefully, the hooligan fringe either rushes in or is imported by the other side to stir the pot and make it worse, so they can carry out crimes in anonymity. Then BLM or some other faction gets the blame for all the destruction. A meaningful dialogue has to be encouraged between all groups, proper responses to crimes have to be encouraged, better training for police is needed and not every situation needs to be used as a police training exercise. Don’t get me started what they do in Berkeley every time the students have a peaceful protest. In our city, they currently have 4 teams of a policeman and social worker who respond to domestic disputes, social worker to deescalate tensions and policeman to protect the social worker. Police are being asked to be our problem solvers in all areas and they willingly take on the job, even if they do not have all the training but they should be looking out for our greater security, not handling petty complaints with a SWAT team. The proliferation of guns, both legal and illegal just exacerbates the problem. We also need leaders who do not make things worse with their words or actions. They need to be for all people, not just themselves. A complex problem or problems, for sure. We have to come up long enough to breathe so things can get better. Stay well.

I live in a suburban area of a medium size city and am aware that the inner city area has changed drastically and become increasingly dangerous although on a much smaller scale than NYC. I suspect that this is happening everywhere to varying degrees. So many problems to address but one thing is clear we definitely need the police.

My advice is to move out of NYC now. The situation you’ve described will not improve but continue to deteriorate due to the budget cut you mentioned. I believe this country is under God’s wrath and the urban areas will be affected first. You can continue your blog and your business from anywhere. Get out while you can.

Agreed! I’m surprised police recruitment hasn’t gone way down. Who wants to serve when regard for their life is insignificant. When you were sharing, I immediately visualized the film “Escape From New York”. If you’ve not seen it, it’s like coming to fruition from what you describe. Sad. I am shocked at the belligerent disrespect that rioters are committing towards the police. I pray for this country with all my heart. Hmm this is very horrible to hear but to be honest I see this as the city’s judgement from turning far away from Jesus. I’m not saying there is a remnant of serious righteous people, but indeed the end is drawing nearer and nearer. Will continue to lift your friends & you and your family and the city in prayer. Hi Peter. I appreciate you joining the conversation again. I’d like to address your “ABC.” First of all, I was setting up the scene by describing the place in which she lives. It was not a dig at anyone. There are lots of different neighborhoods in Manhattan that span a lot of different income levels (that in itself is also problematic), and I figured that was a more eloquent way of stating that she lives in the neighborhood with the highest rent in the city. Ok now onto your points.
A) there was evidence that he stole the packages, hence the arrest.
B) he has every right to be in that neighborhood, but squatting in a building in which he is not paying rent is illegal. It is trespassing to the highest degree.
C) again, I am not saying that people who live in affluent areas are exempt from being crime victims. I was merely setting the scene and painting a picture of the neighborhood I was describing. Because, as I mentioned there are many MANY different neighborhoods in Manhattan, and yes, sadly some have an acutely higher crime rate than others. And this particular neighborhood: the upper west side, is full of families, high rent buildings with state of the art security (ie 24-hour security personelle), neighborhood police watch, etc, and as a result, crime tends to be lower there.

Wouldn’t it be nice if police were more sensitive to other races? Unlike your false flags that “the Left” want’s to defund police, most just want common sense police reform. I doubt you have ever feared getting shot by police for getting pulled over or for jogging. Please consider that is a common fear for many people of color. This fear is reality based.

Sad to say but our country has deteriorated morally. It’s been happening even before the 2016 election with extreme hatred towards our current president that is going nonstop.
We can only hope the right people are being put in office so we can fix many of these problems that society has. Including giving the police the best resources they need to do their job correctly.
Also I agree with many of the posters, get as far away from the city as you can. Being in any major city with criminals running free and with less or no police. It’s only going to get worse at least until people start kicking the politicians out of office that are not doing their jobs. You got to wonder why they haven’t done that already.

To solve a problem in weeks or months, when these problems have taken generations to create… Personally, I do not like the phrase “Defund the Police”, though I agree that reallocating funds to programs which prevent future social problems would be wise.
From what I heard on the radio the other day, for employees who could work on-line, 25% are white, 13% are Latinex, and 9% black. Also, a majority (don’t recall the number) of those who lost jobs during the pandemic are people of color. And, most of those who escaped cities (don’t recall the numbers) are white. Sales of country homes, RV’s, and boats, are up and mostly white people purchasing.
That leaves the cities with greater percentage of furloughed/laid off and homeless folks looking for ways to survive, which unfortunately usually are deemed illegal. -Oscar

Wow. I cannot believe the “take a knee” thing. What upsets me is that if I asked that clown if he thought DEMANDING random white women to take a knee and posting them without consent would inspire more allies or more friction he’d feel pretty small. I’m a Christian too and I think its challenging for us to find a way to champion the message of “black lives matter” while piggybacking with GODs Word that we are all made in His image. We are, but we haven’t been treated that way. And all of our siblings who know JESUS also know compassion. Compassion compels us to have sympathy to and the courage to “walk a mile” in someone else shoes. So we are tasked to always find ways to uplift and love on the oppressed. I just hope I (we – my tribe) still have you and other allies as allies when ignorance runs rampant. We need you guys more and not less, we need you guys stronger after that not weaker. I wish I could speak with that kid and get him to understand the error in his ways and how his ways detract from the message and alienate the allies we seek.
