A Tale of Two Political Nuns

A little known fact about me that may surprise you — aside from the fact that I was the city diving champ for “8-and-unders” back in the ’90s — is that I don’t write my blog posts in advance.

Nope. Maybe that’s a little irresponsible of me, and definitely maybe not the best blogging practice, but I like to publish real-time posts. I like to be current, have my writing reflect the present moment, and mainly, to let the Spirit move me to write what He nudges in my heart.

And today, the latter is most definitely where we’re at.

Obviously, we’re in the political season with the election looming right around the corner. And two-ish weeks ago were the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention.

And I watched both. And there was one thing that caught my attention, through all the fluff, pomp and circumstance on both sides. And that was the stark difference between the two Catholic nuns that spoke at the DNC and RNC.

At the DNC, Sister Simone Campbell – who is also a lawyer – gave the opening prayer…

…and at the RNC, Sister Deirdre Byrne – who is also a doctor, surgeon, global missionary, and retired army colonel – gave a passionate 4-minute speech. (The opening prayer at the RNC was by Cardinal Timothy Dolan).

I watched both of these short clips several times, comparing and contrasting everything from their rhetoric, their demeanor, what they were — or weren’t — wearing, their degree of humility, as well as overall message.

Basically, I was ready to offer some commentary that was, admittedly, probably not the most Christ-like.

And I was stopped dead in my tracks when I read the final sentence of today’s Gospel from Luke 6:38, “For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you.”

Checkmate.

Well played, Jesus. Well played.

But in that same reading today, was another passage that hit to the real message I wanted to actually address, that, though contrasts these two nuns, has nothing to do with them personally, or their physical presentation.

Psalm 139: 13-14 – “Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made.”

I read that, and I knew that Jesus was encouraging me to share what He had put on my heart.

Sister Deirdre Byrne, speaking at the Republican National Convention said flat out, As a physician, I can say without hesitation: Life begins at conception.” What a powerful, quiet strength this small but mighty woman commanded on that stage. She was humbly dressed in her habit, no makeup. This surgeon and former soldier (she served in the army for 29 years), reminded us how when we first met Jesus in the Bible, He was just an embryo in an unwed mother’s womb, who would then be born nine months later into poverty in a cave.

For me, that is the deciding factor. That is what this election — and every election — is about, and has been about: protecting the most vulnerable, innocent lives in the womb. In 2019 alone, more than 42 million children were killed in the womb, globally.

Forty two million. In 2019 alone.

Speaking about her time serving as a missionary in Haiti, Sudan, Kenya, and Iraq, Sister Byrne continued, “Those refugees all share a common experience. They have all been marginalized, viewed as insignificant, powerless and voiceless. And while we tend to think of the marginalized as living beyond our borders, the truth is the largest marginalized group in the world can be found here in the United States. They are the unborn.”

Those babies are the marginalized. Not given a voice. Seen as insignificant. Not even given a chance at life. The unborn are the largest marginalized group that need to be fought for.

It was such a desolately stark, stark contrast to the prayer offered by Sister Simone Campbell at the Democratic National Convention. Though she prayed for us as a people to have a vision, “grounded in community and care for all, especially the most marginalized,” she never once mentioned the unborn. Forgive my candidness, but it felt so inauthentic, as in the same breath, she chided the current state of this nation, as a place in chaos, needing the breath of life from the “Divine Spirit.”

She never said the word, “Bible,” but rather, “The very first paragraph of the scripture that informs the three Abrahamic traditions tells us: The Divine Spirit breathed over the waters of chaos and brought forth a new creation.

Maybe I’m just a country bumpkin from Ohio, but that is an extremely “high falootin’” way of saying Genesis: 1. It feels strangely as though she’s desperately trying not to alienate the atheist and agnostic members of the her party base. And this “very first paragraph of the scripture that informs the three Abrahamic traditions” — it was when God brought about light from the darkness, and said “Let there be light.”

You know what is dark and needing light?

The abortion industry. Which is exactly what former Planned Parenthood Clinic Director, Abby Johnson, spoke about in her moving speech at the Republican National Convention.

Sister Campbell’s speech – or rather, prayer – it just felt like it was written by the campaign managers themselves. And it came off that way, too.

And one more thing about Sister Campbell…on August 19, when asked point blank on her position on abortion, she refused to take a stand, saying it was “above her pay grade.” But I digress.

It seems I’ve let my temper get the best of me. Let me reel it in, for one last thing.

I fully appreciate that there are other marginalized groups that also need to, and should be fought for. And I do. Wholeheartedly.

But I also fight for the marginalized group that doesn’t even have a voice. The marginalized group, whose supporters are silenced by the mainstream media. Why is it that all of my pro-life blog articles have been censored by Facebook?

Why is it that during Sister Byrne’s speech at the Republican National Convention, CNN translated all of her uses of the term “pro-life” to “anti-abortion” in their translation for Spanish audiences?

Standing up for the unborn and being pro-life does not mesh with the “politically correct” or “fashionable” agenda of today. An agenda, that is certainly in need of some divine light.

I pray tonight that we all reflect on meeting Jesus in the womb of an unwed mother, who said “yes” to life – Yes to God – Yes when the world around her dictated she say no.

She said yes.

What do you say?

This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

    • Thanks friend! You’re right – she took a stand for Christ and I applaud that! I respect both women for giving their lives to Jesus in service, obviously, but I was really impressed with sister Byrne!! Glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

      • I missed the debate on your blog post on the police. Maybe for the best? Lol. As for the other nun who spoke for the DNC, of course, she too gave her life to Christ and who am I to criticize her? 🙂 If we ever meet, maybe I can share what happened my last year in college with my university chaplain. Nothing bad, just interesting. Lol

      • Thanks, again! oh interesting, i would love to hear that story. if you ever feel so moved, you can always email me too! beautybeyondbones@yahoo.com. it would be an honor to hear what you went through. Hugs and love xox

  1. Many orders do not require habits. Sister Campbell and Cardinal Dolan offered prayer, which is appropriate regardless of the venue. Sister Byrne offered an impassioned speech which, while appropriate, necessary and well spoken in terms of taking a stance for life, played the part of politics. I find her words appropriate. I believe, however, that doing so at the convention of a particular political party was politically motivated more than life giving. And to me, that’s rather sad, not something to celebrate. It seems we cannot take a stance on any morally appropriate issue without it being wholly politicized. And that, in itself, made it inappropriate. I am wholly pro-life. I only wish it, as an official lobbying stance, was not political.

    • Thanks Tim for sharing your thoughts on this. You bring up some great points here – i too, wish that this issue was not politicized, but alas, it is really one of the largest – and gravest – differences between the parties, so i understand why it is such a big talking point. thank you so much for stopping by. have a great day! Hugs and love xox

  2. Well, I must say that I am impressed, young lady. This is very well thought out and stated: must have be through Devine Inspiration. It is refreshing the degree that you pay attention to the day to day of the world; especially with today’s politics being as tense and may I say “hateful”. I’m proud that you stand to your convictions. You help inspire others to follow that “moral compass”. Thank you.

    • Hi friend! thank you so much! oh gosh, you’re kind to say that. amen – i am so sad with how fiercy hateful politics has become. i often find myself thinking, “can’t we all just get along!?” I do understand how the right to life issue is one of the biggest differences between the parties, so it’s understandable that they’d highlight it. thank you for your knid and encouraging words. your support truly means the world. Hugs and love xox

  3. You have guts little lady I’ll say that. Thank you for speaking up in defense of the unborn something even most bishops won’t do. God Bless.

    • Thank you Dan. I appreciate your support. It truly means so so much. Glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  4. I love the way you write, led by the Holy Spirit and with courage! Amen to all of this. If you have seen it, you should watch Focus on the Families “See Life” video. I actually was thinking about you and your other recent post when I watched it. Your boldness is truly an amazing witness and example. Thank you!!

    • Oh my gosh you’re too kind thank you!! I haven’t seen it but I’ll definitely check it out! Thank you for the recco!! Hugs and love xox

  5. Beautifully well said. ❤️ Those precious lives are souls just like you and I. We were just blessed enough to be alive and breathing today. Thank you for always using your platform to spread the truth, even if it goes against the current.

    • Thank you so much Sierra, that really means a lot. You’re so right – they’re like you and I and deserve a right to life!! Very grateful for your support! Hugs and love xox

  6. Until you wrote this I didn’t even know people write their posts ahead of time. I don’t. I am just like you. As far as this post, you shared very well. I am one at heart with you on this subject. Case closed. You were very well thought out, and shared your point of view very well. God bless you, and keeping being bold as the Holy Spirit leads. We live in a time that calls for us to speak up when led. 💜 Lisa (Disciples of Christ)

    • Hi Lisa! haha, oh yes – some people have content calendars all planned out. i most certainly do not! thank you for your support. it is definitely a very emotional topic for sure. you’re absolutely right – now is not the time to be silent when it comes to our faith. i really appreciate your encouraging words. i hope you have a beautiful evening! Hugs and love xox

      • You too! I will never be one to plan my posts out in advance. I am lead to write what the Holy Spirit leads me to write in the moments of my day. Blessings, have a wonderful weekend! 💜 Lisa

      • Yes! It’s a great exercise in trust that He will provide!! Haha Hugs and love xox

  7. Some thoughts. First, let’s make sure we’re talking about the difference between evaluating and condemning. What you sought to do in this article is evaluate. I think Luke 6:38 is more a warning against condemning. There are multiple scriptures that promote judging as an evaluation to know right from wrong, to recognize who you’re dealing with. So no worries for you there.

The DNC speech. You targeted the use of words to deceive, as we see time and again in abortion defense. If the sister won’t come out and say her belief openly, if a member of a religious order refuses to come down on one side or the other regarding issues about sanctity of life…

    “Danger, Will Robinson!!!”

High falootin’? Yeah…why use one word or syllable when ten will do?? As for your temper: I didn’t think you really got hot. It was a pretty even-handed article. Analytical. If you are angry, you’re angry about the right things!!! More power to you!

    Well done tonight, Caralyn!

    • Hey Jeff, you’re so right – I didn’t think of that qualifier, but you’re right – evaluating is completely different than condemnation. You absolutely right about deceptive language — it’s all about dehumanizing the life in the womb and the pregnancy, because one once you separate it from its humanness, then, aborting the child isn’t as big of a deal. thank you for the encouraging words, Jeff. Yeah – in my old age, I’ve come to simmer down a bit and choose my words more wisely I guess. haha trying to ruffle the least ammount of feathers while still getting my point across. Hope your week is going well! i’m looking forward to listening to that podcast this weekend, thanks again for passing it along. my mom too! big hugs to you and your girls xox

  8. I do not often speak openly of my political opinions; however, whenever I am “pressed upon” to share my views – specifically where my vote lies – my honest response is, “I vote for babies, bibles, and business.” In that order & the first 2 are not negotiable. 💕 Sister Byrne’s talk was awe-inspiring. It really did feel like she was “talking” to the World – not offering a speech for a candidate. Yes, the Republican party offers the only protection for life plan politically available and obviously she was there in support of votes for this Party; however, her message spoke on the Sanctity of life – and my heart cheered her on with every word she spoke. She knows the greatest hope for the unborn right now lies within the Republican Party & she showed a brave willingness to cross-over into the arena to plead on their (the unborn’s) behalf. My favorite moment & her greatest reminder (to us all,) is the best weapon we have – The Rosary. May we all pray this prayer fervently until November 3rd…if only for the sake of the unborn. Hugs to you Caralyn, to once again speak on a topic that is often difficult, yet necessary. The dialog you promote, as a result, is life giving for all! 💕

    • Hi Dawn, wow I am so moved by your Babies, Bibles and business response!!! (mind if i adopt that??) It’s so powerful! you’re so right – i was captivated by Sister Byrne’s address. it was powerful. and Amen – there is power in prayer. i loved that line too. yes – i will join you in that prayer!! thanks again for sharing your beautiful heart. You are a blessing to me, my friend! Hugs and love xox

      • Hey! I just recognized my voting criteria is a b3! Isn’t there someone you know that has a b3 motto??? Giggles. How silly, I didn’t make that connection when I first responded to your post. 🤣🤣 And absolutely, I happily share this b3 voting criteria with all who desire to join us. More hugs!

      • hahahahha 🙂 heheh that’s awesome 🙂 thanks for making me smile!!! b3!! woo!!!

  9. For me the most striking character is actually Joseph. In an era where women were stoned to death  for adultery, he had the courage, faith (obeying God’s direction) and humility to stand by his woman, under very difficult circumstances. How much easier would it have been, to have walked away? He must have faced public shame, yet still stood his ground. Perhaps this is the issue. Are we raising young men prepared to take responsibility for their actions or are we teaching them that women and babies are a disposable inconvenience?

  10. Thank you for the thought-provoking post. I’m not a parent and this particular issue is not one I’ve given much thought to. You could say I’m on the fence about it – both sides seem to have some good points and this seems to be a highly complex issue. Just thinking aloud here… Are non-human animals conscious? Science suggests that many of them are, especially mammals. And if they’re conscious, should they also have the same rights as human rights? And yet we kill many animals for food. I’m actually on a carnivore diet myself. It’s beneficial for my health, but did the animals who died so I could eat them not have a right to live? I can see some parallels here with the pro-life debate. I’m not pushing any particular agenda/side here, I’m genuinely enquiring about all this. Thanks again for the post… Really made me examine my own beliefs and why I hold them.

    • thank you so much Rock! You’re right, it is a highly complex and emotionally charged issue, that is for sure. My answer to you regarding the animals, is that, unlike other mamals and animals, humans have a soul. And that is what separates us from animals. God placed us over the animals. those are all wonderful questions, and definitely worth considering! thanks for stopping by, i hope you have a great night! Hugs and love xox

  11. I am the same way, I write my posts in the moment with what comes to me or what I feel I should be writing about at that moment. This is also the major source of my prolonged absences however, and I am curious how you manage that. Do you keep a running list of potential topics? Do you ever find that you feel you simply have nothing to write about?

    • thank you so much Eric! great questions – honestly, i just sit down and say, ok God, what should i write about today? Usually the topics come to me when I’m on my daily jog, or sometimes something I hear in a podcast or at Mass will strike something in me. Or, a situation in life will move something in my heart. it really runs the gammut, but yes, i defintiely have days where I feel empty – and in those days, I typically try to examine what in my life is also feeling “dry.” hope that helped! Hugs and love xox

      • That is a very unique way of composing and still maintaining a regular blog in my opinion. I am also very impressed with your conviction regarding abortion in your country and I think that is wonderful. In Canada abortion is a protected Charter right alongside a right to life (how absurd is that) and our judges decide what can and can’t happen and have pretty much allowed unrestricted abortions in Canada since the 1980s. You clearly have Christ at the center of your worldview and that is truly unique. You are a true woman of God. 😊

      • Thanks again!! That really is quite the opposing legislature, wow. Head scratcher there. Thank you! Hugs and love xox

  12. I definitely understand when you get angry because of how some people can easily support the killing of unborn children. I believe that’s righteous anger like God being angry to people who sacrificed their children to Molech. May the people of the US realize the great crime they have legalized and the unimaginable number of unborn children they have killed.

    • thanks Joshua for sharing your thoughts on this. The number of children lost to abortion is truly gut wrenching. makes me so sad. Hugs and love xox

    • thanks Rollie, i appreciate your support. true dat, true dat!! glad you stopped by! i hope you have a beautiful evening! Hugs and love xox

      • i don’t think killing animals for the purpose of food is murder. i don’t think we should be killing willy nilly, but there is a reason God created man over animals. They offer sustenance, sources of clothing and warmth. though i follow a mainly vegan diet with the exception of fish, I don’t believe that “meat is murder” or anything like that.

  13. Thank you. Being Pro-life involves deconstructing the philosophy, for want of a better term, of the sexually
permissive culture that has distorted our moral thinking ever since reliable and widespread artificial contraception became

    • thank you so much David for sharing your thoughts on this! you’re right – it is radically counter culture thinking. And it’s sad, how we’ve sanitized the act, and completely lost sight of the number of children we’re killing every year. You bring up such great points. glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  14. available about 150 years ago with the latex prophylactic, and pessary. The unborn are the inconvenient reality that drives home what sex is ultimately about. We either accept life or we don’t.

    • you’re right – it all boils down to that one huge question. accept it or not. very moved by your response, thank you again. Hugs and love xox

      • Thank you. The damage from sexual permissiveness seems to be expanding logarithmically as the contraception industry grows. Men and women are forgetting we are God’s creatures. We are becoming closed to life.

  15. As a Brit, ones of the things which stands out for me is that this issue seems far more contentious in the US than in almost any other country. I’m curious about why that’s the case. And I wonder how it became so tied to US politics. Again, I don’t think I know of any othercountry where this is the case to such an extent. I wonder why this is. This isn’t a criticism, just something I’m curious about.

  16. Final comment from me! I blog similarly to you… I usually sit down and the words just pour out from within… I think I understand what you mean, though we use different words to describe a similar process. I start writing with just a vague idea, but I never force my creativity. It’s ready in its own time! Take care, friend.

    • You’re so right – that’s the beauty of blogging is that it allows you to freely express your heart, and that act of release, i have found, is so therapeutic and healing! i’m so glad you’ve found that same thing!!! 🙂 you too! i’ve enjoyed chatting with you tonight! Hugs and love xox

      • It’s beyond 2020! The adversary is always on the prowl. This is why I wrote about Rome and it’s fall. Claiming Christ is not being of or for. Christ. How foolish we look as a church standing against abortion and then covering pedophiles!!! Until we can understand this and be honest, we will continue not to be taken seriously.

  17. I also do my posts cold, and I’m doing this response cold, so bear with me. . .
As an ordained Catholic deacon, I’m finding that more of my focus is turning toward the faith formation of children, helping to create a generation that will more readily value life itself. And I think the first step is going back to fundamentals, taking Genesis 1:27 and thinking about what it really means to be made in the “image and likeness of God.” That reality carries plenty of weight in terms of personal self-worth, the respect we show others, and the respect we show life itself, especially its creation.
Through my meager newspaper and blog efforts, I hope to show kids and adults that abortion cannot ever be considered a proper decision, and have it in their heads way before such a decision may even be considered.
I don’t want this post to be all about me. I just feel we should put more effort in the formation of the generation to come, that they will respect life more than much of current society does. We must keep trying, but I’m just not sure how successful we’ll be fighting the current generation, though I’d love to be wrong about that.
    Hugs and love from Kentucky.

    • Thanks friend for sharing your thoughts on this! Amen to that – in the image and likeness of God. It really boils down to that! I appreciate your support! Hugs and love xox

  18. Caralyn, your post is well written and thought out. I appreciate that you watched both conventions and formed your opinion from an educated view. As a Christian, it is disturbing that we are passionate about all lives except the unborn. Those voices are silent. Thank you for raising your voice to speak for those that can’t. You are a beautiful and inspiring woman.

    • Thank you so much Kristie! I’m so glad this resonated with your heart. It really is such an important issue!! Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks so much Jenny Grace! Yes! I also thought Abby Johnson’s speech was captivating. She has a powerful testimony. Amen to that! It is sacred! And gosh thanks for saying that! Hugs and love xox

      • You’re very welcome. It’s so necessary to have the truth of the Gospel put out to a hurting world. Jesus loves us all beyond measure. I found a song on the radio called “Confidence” by Sanctus Real. I’d never heard it before. It is truly beautiful and full of truth. Have a wonderful and blessed weekend.

      • you’re absolutely right about that. Jesus loves beyond measure, beyond our wildest imagination — it is the greatest love of all. Hugs and love xox

  19. “The scripture that informs the three Abrahamic traditions”–definitely the most PC way to say “the Bible” that I’ve ever heard… feels so contrived it makes me want to laugh. I hadn’t been aware of this particular contrast between the RNC and the DNC, so thanks for this informative post. Regardless of what other issues each party may or may not have right, this issue of the sanctity of all life is certainly one of the most pivotal when it comes to elections and voting.

    • Hahah right?? THE MOST pc way to say it!! Thanks so much Heather for sharing your heart. I so agree – it is the pivotal issue indeed! I pray our nation thinks so too! Hugs and love xox

      • Yes prayer is what we need right now! And thank YOU for what you’re doing to bring truth to the world. It’s amazing that you’re able to speak to so many people at once through your blog. Keep it up! 🙂

      • I am so touched, thank you again!!! hope you’re having a fantastic friday! 🙂

    • Hi Joshua, thanks for joining the conversation. Trump has said and done a lot of things I personally don’t agree with. But he has also done more for the unborn than any president, so I’ve got to give him that. Hugs and love xox

    • Hmm interesting take. You can also read my Profile of a Trump Supporter if you want to know my real feelings. It’s not a passive approval of trump in the least. Like I said, though I don’t agree with many things he’s done and said, I fully approve of how he’s worked to protect and advocate for the unborn, i think he did wonders for our economy – until the pandemic struck. He has done a lot of bad, but also politically a lot of good. Hugs and love xox

      • Trump’s “wonders for economy” helped a narrow swath of America. Mostly previously wealthy, white people. Before you believe his statistics about how he’s the best President since Lincoln, do a big of research of how much he helped those who needed it the most. But he could have sent America into the worst depression ever, right? It wouldn’t have changed your vote. Pain and suffering only counts before you’re born.

  20. Amen, sister (not in the nun sense of the word)! For me there is no other issue of our time while the killing of babies in the womb is still legal. Of course, there are many other issues of our time, but everything else pales.

    • Thank you so much!! You’re right – there are many many other issues, but the right to life is, imho the most pressing. Hugs and love xox

  21. I completely agree. And let’s not forget that Kamala Harris believes in throwing undercover pro-life journalists in jail and raiding their homes yet looking the other way regarding the federal crimes committed by Planned Parenthood that said undercover pro-life journalists exposed. I stand with David Daleiden.

    • Thanks so much Greg! I’m so glad this resonated with you! you’re so right – that was despicable how Harris handled that. Just so so wrong. Me too. Hugs and love xox

  22. I couldn’t watch the DNC first night all the way through. I dont know if you watched clips or the entire thing but I had to shut it down when this one lady was blaming the president for her father’s dead. DNC was extremely negative I felt sick watching it.

Besides the fact I was able to watch the RNC because it focused mostly on actual issues such as Abortion. It’s not a surprise that the right is against Abortion while the left could care less and its pretty apparent on CNN that they have an agenda rather than properly translating what was said with the RNC.

If they change the word pro life to ‘anti abortion’ for our Hispanic voters who knows what else they translated wrong because the news media is supposed to be biased against what is being reported or said. Ever notice mainstream news like ABC, CNN never say anything positive about the right, like absolutely nothing. And FOX news is also regarded as false reporting even though it’s mostly a right wing media news source.

Without paying attention to the nonsense on both sides its pretty clear to me that the left has abandoned much of the values we need to have. The only thing the left offers is an environmental plan which sounds ideal on paper, however the right offers more opportunities in how to reach that goal and its really up to the American people what they want to spend their money on.

When people are ready they’ll do what’s necessary on their own without government interference. California’s brownouts should be in indication that they are moving too fast. Anyway off topic here but the right has more sensible goals right now, we need a stronger workforce so people can provide for their families and we cant allow those to destroy traditional values.

On the subject of Abortion I question the need for it even if a woman has been raped (a discussion I had with someone who was for Abortions). Is that really an excuse to let the pregnancy go on then have an abortion? I dont know where people stand on the ‘morning after pill’ or preventing pregnancy if a woman had been violated but not good to wait to see if your pregnant so to need an Abortion.

I do know that Kamala Harris supports full term Abortions which is basically the worst considering there is already a being people are advocating death to. This is really why we need to get back to values and regardless who is running the show the right has always offered better values.

    • I really was the blame game show. I got absolutely nothing about what their plans for the country were – only “orange man bad” rhetoric. That’s what they’re running on. That and the fear of covid-19. Oh i hear you! There is an agenda at work and it is despicable. I simply don’t watch those channels. I can’t. Makes me sick. Your absolutely right – we need to get back to our values. Plain and simple as that! Hugs and love xox

      • It’s all about money, power and control with the left. They want $4 trillion for this green deal. How are you going to get the money without hiking gas and electric prices? They want to force people onto electric vehicles (despite the problems with them), change homes to make them more energy efficient, windows, appliances, ect and it can’t happen when people dont have jobs or just scraping by. They don’t even want to explore the idea of coming up with synthetic oils and fuels to make them cleaner that will be more effective in eliminating the need for oil overall so the existing technology can still be used. Their agenda is clear and thats the reason they dont talk about their plans, using a poor old man with Alzheimers to get what they want. Its sickening.

They care more about illegals and people dying of covid than giving new life a chance. The rest of the country needs to reopen we already have the ability to combat covid 19, if you have a sickness you can stay at home with a doctors note.

Funny how I’m not scared at all over Covid 19 even when before the masks were put in place, it’s just easier to let God control it. I’m more afraid of these controlling greedy people than the virus.

      • So much powerful food for thought here. You’re right – we need to reopen. We need to get Back to work!! Thanks again for joining the conversation!! Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you so much Mary! I’m so glad this resonated with you! Yes they are so worth it! Hugs and love xox

  23. An excellent, well-balanced, honest perspective. Thank you, Caralyn! And I do not write in advance either, but I will admit that doing so can often put me in crunch time to meet my publishing schedule. Still, each time the Lord has and by His grace will continue to provide the inspiration to press on. 🙂 Blessings!

    • Thank you so much Darryl! Oh my gosh you’re kind to say that!! Yeah! Hope you’re having a great week so far! Hugs and love xox

  24. I’m reminded of this passage from Matt. 7:22, ““Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

While I am not claiming that Sister Campbell is not saved, Jesus did warn about false prophets.

We need wisdom more than ever to discern God’s voice among many voices that are preaching at us from both sides.

    • thank you Frankie for your support. you’re absolutely right – we need to shrewdly discern His voice among the many voices out there! glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  25. Great article. Good insight. Good contrasts. I did not watch the DNC. I did watch the RNC. I did watch and was moved by the Catholic Nun speaking at the RNC. I also was moved by Abby Johnson who was-at one time given the inaugural Margaret Sanger award for her industrious work in aborting human babies.
God changed Abby Johnson! Praise the Lord. God has changed you and I. Praise the Lord. I pray God continue by His Spirit to breath life into the dry bones of those not born again of His Spirit. May this election year be one of a revival of our God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit upon the humanity of His own fallen creatures-that we may shew forth the praises of His gospel and of His name! May God save the unborn and move upon the hearts of His newly converted people to save the unborn as well. One of my dearest passages is from the Proverbs,
“Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy. – Proverbs 31:8-9
May the Republican party endeavor with God’s sovereign blessing and with all their might to overturn Roe v. Wade. We pray in Christ’s name, Amen.

Thank you again for a moving post!

    • Hi Tim, thank you so much for your thoughts response. Sister Byrne’s and Abby Johnson’s speeches were so increidbly moving indeed! Yes He did move in her heart! Praise be to God! I pray that He move in the hearts of many more! big hugs to you xox

  26. I remember Obama saying it was “above my pay grade” when asked about abortion when he was running for president in 2008. Read the Bible and listen to science. Life begins at conception. Thank you for standing up for the unborn.

    • Hi friend, thank you so much for sharing your heart on this. amen to that! at conception! yes! gotta stand up for the voiceless! Hugs and love xox

  27. I can’t. It is a very difficult ‘issue’ but for that reason it should NOT be used to get a party in power. There are other marginalised. This is a question up to God and the woman involved, not for being a political football.

    • Hi MariHoward, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. You’re right – there are other marginalized groups for sure that need fighting for. I think that since this is really one of the biggest differences in party platforms, it is inevitable that it will be a huge “mouthpiece” for politics, for better or for worse. i hope you have a wonderful weekend! Hugs and love xox

  28. That’s the typical response from the pro-life and the pro-abortion sides. One is clear and definite. The other is muddy and vague.

That’s the only way you can reconcile Catholics theology with abortion.

If you press the pro-abortion issue, you get a mean reaction from the pro-abortionist. That’s because of the spirit behind it.

It’s like when the bird attacked you outside of the abortion clinic. There was no reason for you to be attacked by a bird.

    Your prayer was effective.

    • Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this. Oh my gosh you remember that stinkin bird!!!! You’re absolutely right – it is an opposition to life – to moral thinking, to what — I believe – is right and God’s heart. Opposition to those things can only come from a different spirit. Hugs and love xox

  29. WOW, WOW, WOW, Cara… wow!!! Did I mention… wow? As I was scrolling through your post looking for the video to play, I could tell just by their photos which nun was for which party.
Thank you for posting this. A picture speaks a thousand words.

    • Thank you so much Melissa! Oh my gosh, you’re amazing. i really appreciate your support. Yeah, it is quite evident, isn’t it? So glad you stopped by! have a beautiful evening! Hugs and love xox

  30. I read this yesterday. It was interesting and very good. I find the way you compared the two speeches to be compelling. It’s made me change my view on things. Caralyn, you have a good heart and are intelligent. I finished a post on 19 Years before. Pretty emotional. Have a nice day.

    • Hi Derek, thank you so much for sharing your heart on this! oh wow – i look forward to reading your 19 Years post – sound intriguing! so glad this resonated with you, my friend. have a beautiful weekend! Hugs and love xox

  31. Maybe if those denied their right to life were also classified as disenfranchised voters (which they most certainly are) more Democrats would care..?

    • Oh my gosh, what a thought!!! thank you so much Cindy for stopping by and taking the time to read! It certainly is a wild political world out there, isn’t it?? Hugs and love xox

  32. I agree with you view that the tech industry is marginalizing what they deem “politically uncorrect speech,” acting like they alone have the right to “control” viewpoints.
I saw something on Fox business last night where Marsha Blackburn is trying to pass Reform Bill 230.
It is to remove the protection big tech has abused using it for social media censorship of what they don’t want anyone to hear.
Bill Barr said, “these companies held themselves out as open to all commerce but it was just a ‘bait and switch,’ to build up a large membership. Now they are being selective, censoring out different viewpoints.”
    youtube.com/watch?v=est92UbeDY8

Micaiah had to speak up against Ahab’s 400 lying prophets.
    Elijah against 850 false prophets.
Noah preached God’s righteousness for over 100 years upon deaf ears.
For over 25 years Jeremiah spoke for God before He fulfilled what Jeremiah voiced for God.

Let those who have ears to hear hear what God’s Spirit is speaking by the few and often censored

    • Hi Tony, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this. wow – that sounds like an absolutely riviting interview! and so timely. As THIS EXACT article was ALSO censored last night by Facebook!!! the mainstream media really does have an agenda, and as the gatekeepers of news, they’re telling us what we can and can’t think about!! it is a scary SCARY truth that i don’t think many people are aware of the degree of severity. amen amen amen. glad you stopped by. Hugs and love xox

  33. “The very first paragraph of the scripture that informs the three Abrahamic traditions tells us: The Divine Spirit breathed over the waters of chaos and brought forth a new creation.” Given that the U.S. has a secular rather than a religious government, there are other beliefs systems besides Christianity that deserve to be welcome and included within a political party and their national convention, including Judaism and Islam as the other Abrahamic religions.

    • Hi Ashley Leia, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. I definitely respect that fact. Religious liberty is the foundation upon which this country was founded, and what makes it so great! My only point to that end was that the woman speaking is a Catholic nun. As a fellow Catholic, I would have hoped that she’d affirm, and publicly stand by the beliefs that Catholics hold. that’s all. 🙂 Just as I would hope a Jewish Rabbi, a Muslim Imam, or Hindu Pujari would affirm their beliefs if given a national platform from which to speak. 🙂 Hugs and love xox

  34. I love that you don’t shy away from any touchy topic … especially abortion. I personally believe that almost all of our social ills have their roots in abortion. The guilt and shame we carry for snuffing out the innocent lives of children we help create colors everything else we struggle with in our culture. The beautiful thing is that God offers forgiveness and healing … if we’ll just turn to Him. Thanks for another thought-provoking read.

    • thank you Shelly! It definitely is super nerve wracking to press the publish button when it’s a hotbutton topic, that’s for sure! i am right there with you! and amen amen amen – His forgiveness and mercy is how and why we are all alive today! it is a beautiful thing that I am so so very grateful for. have a wonderful weekend ! Hugs and love xox

  35. Great article.. Cute picture too..

Frankly I am not surprised that Facebook chose to censor this article. Anything that seems to question the motives of the political party is basically wrong in their eyes.
Every time I see good friends of mine fooled by the media into turning a rapist into a hero or a murderer into a savior of women’s rights, it just makes me sad.

It just seems so sad that both parties would stoop so low as to bring women of God to argue their political debates. Even more sad to see someone sell out their God just to appease an audience (Sister Simone Campbell).

The country needs prayer at the moment. I guess that’s the best thing that we can do at the moment.

    • thank you so much! isn’t it so sad that Facebook censors pro-life articles? the american public needs to wake up and see that they are being force fed an agenda that, frankly, is not life giving at all! I am right there with you. we need massive, massive prayer right now! and there’s power in prayer for sure! big hugs xox

      • It’s not just pro-life articles.. they seem to be censoring or threatening to close any page that criticizes the policies of the Democrat party.
Now even Netflix is in the news for showing a movie starring children, but yet deemed to be too graphic to be watched by children.

Completely agree with you though.. There is power in prayer. God hears all, knows all, even before we talk to him about it. So I am confident he has a plan.

  36. Well said!
Thanks for blogging in real-time. I think that is much of the value, charm and especially the power of your blog. As a blogger myself, its nice to see your example that defies the current belief of planning everything 2 years ahead…

    • thank you so much for your support and kind words! i am so touched! hahah right? i would be so stressed to try and think about what I should be saying about Christmas right about now! hahaha Hugs and love xox

  37. Well said, Caralyn, and a courageous stance! There are forces (like Facebook) that don’t want people to know the truth. And I think that’s evil. And I get so tired of hearing sanctimonious moralizing from people who claim to be for the marginalized but are bent on destroying the most marginalized of all, as Sister Byrne said. I cried when I first saw and heard Abby Johnson’s account of having to be part of an actual abortion. That’s like living through a nightmare.

It actually sickens me when pro-abortion people talk about protecting the marginalized. They raise their fist to black lives matter, but abortion amounts to nothing less than racial genocide (don’t even get me started on Planned Parenthood’s racist founder, Margaret Sanger!). 80% of abortion clinics are intentionally put in minority neighborhoods. It’s a billion dollar industry at the expense of minorities. Abortion is the number one killer of black lives in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, abortion kills more black people than HIV, homicide, diabetes, accident, cancer, and heart disease…combined. In NYC, where you live, a black baby is more likely to be aborted than born. The abortion rate for black women is almost five times that for white women.

Let me also say, I have compassion for those who’ve had an abortion, so this is not directed at them at all. In many ways, they are victims, too. My contempt is for hypocritical powers that be claiming to protect the marginalized, while snuffing out the most marginalized. It’s a travesty of justice.

    • THank you so much Mel! You’re absolutely right – there is an agenda at play, and it is certainly not life giving, that’s for sure! makes me so sad. isn’t Abby Johnson’s testimony so powerful?! Did you watch the movie Unplanned? It is her story with Planned Parenthood — it’s available to rent through Amazon — https://amzn.to/2ZwhsSq — and WOW. WOWWWWW. that movie is the most powerful thing i have ever watched. i saw it twice in theaters!! i’m right there with you on everything you’ve said Mel. Especially about having compassion and love for women who have suffered an abortion. They are also the victims here too — most notably to the aggressive manipulation of the abortion industry and planned parenthood in particular. they need love, resources, therapy, and grace. Thank you for this thoughtful response. big big hugs xox

    • thank you so much Oneta for your support! it seriously means a lot! i was so nervous to publish this one, so thank you for having my back 🙂 have a wonderful weekend. Hugs and love xox

  38. I didn’t see these two women speak so I can’t comment on that part. However I can say, the last election I choose not to vote as I felt neither candidate had integrity. And even though I agree abortion is murder, I can’t support a candidate who demoralizes women, lies, is narcissistic, who takes no responsibility for his actions, and who has allowed people to die from a virus while pointing blame. He may ‘talk’ the words of a so called Christian but his actions don’t match.

    • thank you so much Ann for sharing your heart on this. Last election was definitely very difficult for those exact reasons. it was a rock/hard place election for me as well. Hugs and love xox

    • thank you so much for taking the time to read! haha oh that’s awesome! where in PA!? Hugs and love xox

    • I also pray for them, too, YB. Though, I respectfully disagree, I appreciate you sharing your opinion. Hugs and love xox

  39. ATTWN is my amazon smiles charity of choice. Just in case people didn’t realize, if you shop on amazon via smile.amazon.com, it is virtually the same online shopping experience, except that you may designate a percentage of your proceeds to a charity of your choice. RZIM is also one near and dear to my heart.

  40. Very nice reflection. Sometimes in life, considering our many imperfections, the tipping point usually comes from the little ones many disregard, ironically in our time are God and unborn babies. Likewise, prayers come from the heart where God dwells, speaking about the ultimate truth of the gift of life and not from the mind that tries to please everybody. And yes, I wonder why Facebook considers prayers, reflections, and homilies as violations of community standards? They blocked my blogs for three weeks. Keep your blogs coming and God bless you more, Caralyn!

    • thank you so much! you’re so right about that. violation of community standards — it is so sad. Communities used to be BUILT around those things. it is just so sad where we’ve strayed to as a culture. we need prayer more than ever. Hugs and love xox

  41. Hi Caralyn,
I am grateful for the bravery you exhibited in your last post regarding the holiness of life. I’ve read so many articles by both pro-life and pro-choice authors that I believe I have a grasp of the various viewpoints. In saying that, I have never been able to agree or sustain the pro-choice side of the debate. I understand a person’s desire to choose what happens with their body. However, that same person never has the right to choose what happens to the body they are carrying inside them. Abortion takes that choice away from the unborn who can never express their choice. I am pro-life because I believe in the holiness of life for all: mothers, daughters, fathers, and sons and especially the unborn without a voice.

    • Hi Robert, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on this and for your support! i fully agree — the body inside of the woman is a separate, living being, with a separate soul, with separate DNA, his or her own mind and body. And that unborn child has every right to life as both you and I. Hugs and love xox

  42. Girl, you have been hitting the nail on the head on so many issues! Thank you for taking a stand for God and for right!! We are definitely in a spiritual war right now and I’m very thankful that you are using your platform to speak truth. Stay safe!

    • Th an you so much Patty! What a kind thing to say! So glad it has been resonating with you! Hugs and love xox

  43. Caralyn I took too long to get to this. Have been babysitting 4 month old Zeke the youngest of our 15 grandchildren. As I like at him and read your post all I can think is how has our country strayed so far off God’s path. And then we all need prayers – for enlightenment and courage. This issue will never be resolved by legislation or elections. Only through the power of the Holy Spirit-the third person of the only God there is – He who wrote the Bible. And thanks. That Holy Spirit is truly working in your heart and through your words. Thank you for all you do.

    • Thank you so much John for sharing your thoughts on this. Sounds like you have been super busy!! Wow fun though! Amen – we need prayers for sure. Hugs and love xox

  44. I become more and more impressed with your wisdom with each blog that I read. But I have read enough of them to know that there was a day, a moment, and a cross road where you had to reach beyond yourself and find True Peace, Love and Understanding, the day you gave yourself over to Jesus. That day is the reason for all this day since. You are being used, and it is beautiful to see it in action.

    • Thank you so much S! What a kind thing to say. Wow, I am seriously so touched. God is good. Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you so much Chris for sharing your thoughts on this. Amen! Clear as crystal in the Bible! Hugs and love xox

  45. I appreciate your writing! It is admirable to me that you touch on topics such as this. I am so frustrated with cancel culture & those who are trying to kill free speech. You have my respect for standing up for your values. ❤️

    • Thanks so much Teresa. I really appreciate your support. Amen – free speech is something we need to protect at all costs! Hugs and love xox

  46. You have come to your forefront once again. Your sensitivity is to be admired and you touch the hearts of those who follow you. Thou Shalt Not Kill is not a suggestion, it is a commandment. It is not a political issue, but a personal one. I would like to see it brought up along with the concept of War and peace also. You have waded into a turbulent water and I commend you. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. I am forever grateful that my mother chose life.

    • Thanks Dennis for your support and encouraging words. It really means a lot!! Amen! Hugs and love xox

  47. I used to vote the way you describe, because abortion is a huge issue in my mind. But I did some research and found that the abortion rate was consistently lower during Democratic presidencies than under Republicans. I had voted Republican mainly on that issue for 30 years. And I came to understand that, even though I disagree with most of the Democratic rhetoric about abortion, they were actually preventing abortion much more effectively. The data is there on the CDC website for you to see. I had to swallow hard and realize that all my intended good actually resulted in more abortions. I’m not a Democrat, but I also no longer assume that voting Republican is a pro-life vote.

    • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I will look into that – very interesting. Hugs and love xox

  48. I share your concern for the unborn for the cruelties of the human race against itself and also for the lack of deep truthfulness within the heart of those who feel called to take any kind of political leadership these days. Maybe it comes down to this. The best way to lead others is to put Christ first the best way to serve others is to serve the Lord first.

    • Thank you so much Darryl. I’m so glad it resonated with you. And thank you for sharing it! Hugs and love xox

  49. Your comparison of what the two nuns said and didn’t say, was spot on. Sometimes it is hard to zero in on what wasn’t said, when the tone and manner was polite and inviting. I applaud you for your excellent blog post. I concur, 100%. Ann (AECRM)

  50. Neither party represents Jesus. One nun may have spoken to the value of the lives of the unborn, but to call care for the marginalized and discriminated-against ‘vague’ is unfair as well. We are called to love not just the unborn but the marginalized, the downtrodden, the oppressed, the broken and forgotten too. Being pro-life should not end at birth. This isn’t an ‘either-or’ situation but a ‘both-and’ situation.

That said, I would make clear that I am not advocate of Mr. Biden. But, I struggle to know where to begin to speak about how anti-Christian Mr. Trump is. He makes a mockery of our faith and our Lord. Simply, I cannot fathom how any followers of Christ can support a man who has shown how wicked he truly is time and time again (and anything but Christ-like); as the Word says, “You will know them by their fruit.” So what fruit has Mr. Trump brought forth?

That is only to mention his spiritual failings. He also has a strong fascist bent, and I find it truly terrifying that my fellow Christians have cheered on this penchant for authoritarianism in the hopes of creating a Christian state, one that, ironically, would be Christian in name alone. Perhaps that is why Christianity is declining so steeply in America: Christians who do not live Christ. To quote Brennan Manning, “The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” Far too many American Christians worship a ‘god’ made in their own image rather than making their own image after God.

In spite of that, I will not be voting for Mr. Biden. He does not represent Christ well either, particularly in regards to abortion. More so than Mr. Trump but still not near enough. Frankly, I would not have voted for anyone either party could muster though; I embraced Christian anarchy (a bit of a misnomer, admittedly) many years ago, and the 2016 election, and this one, have only buttressed my belief that no government could ever fully or truly embody the ideals set forth by Jesus. The Kingdom must always come before country.

In truth, I don’t think I would ever want such a theocracy anyway because more than likely it would end up as it has with Mr. Trump: Christ weaponized, currently used as a whip upon the backs of His sheep to drive them off a cliff because they blindly follow an ungodly leader; in time, used to force obedience of state rather than actual reverence of God. Power corrupts. And a “little yeast works through the whole batch of dough”. Christianity has been abused and used as a tool before. We must stop allowing it to be used as a means of oppression and violence. Jesus would have rolled in His grave at the state of Christianity in America had He stayed in it.

    • Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this Christian. Lots of powerful food for thought here. Hugs and love xox

  51. Hi Caralyn:
I don’t write my blog posts in advance either. I write them as I get ideas, mostly in the form of titles ~ which are usually fairly goofy, at least at first. But that’s not the main reason I’m responding to your post, which was excellent, by the way.

The main reason is because I want to applaud you for your unabashedly pro-life stance. I also wanted to tell you about a sermon my pastor, Jack Hibbs, preached before the 2016 election, called “What Is the Christian Vote?” It’s the best sermon I’ve ever heard on how to vote using your Christian worldview as a guide. It’s an hour and 15 minutes long, which is a long time, but it’s well worth your time to listen to it. Here’s the link:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8n5cQQvTXs

Even though this sermon was preached before the election in 2016, it’s just as valid now before this upcoming election. I really hope you take the time to listen to it. It can be used to vet any political party or candidate, to see if they’re someone you want to follow or vote for.

I love your blog and I look forward to reading your posts every week. You always have uplifting and encouraging things to say. I think your blog is my favorite of all the blogs I follow, at least partly because we think alike on so many things!

    • hi Sarah, thank you so much for your support and encouraging words. they truly mean so much. YOu’re right – it is definitely nerve wracking to stand up as pro-life these days, but those voiceless vulnerable babies need our voice! oh wow – i will definitely watch that sermon! i can’t wait! i’ll do it as soon as i finish writing tonight’s post! 🙂 thanks again for such generous words! you’ve made my day! Hugs and love xox

  52. Loved this article. Amen!!! In my opinion, abortionist kill more that the most powerful terrorist and abortion is genocide! Thank you for being obedient to that which God placed on your heart!!!

  53. I’ve read your blog and i’ve read the comments. I’ve also been following you for quite a bit of time so I already knew you were a Trump supporter. I still thought that surely after these four years with Trump you would realize that one issue is not enough to justify the other horrors. But all that comes to mind is the pharisees who so strongly believed in their law that they put it above everything else, and Jesus stepped in to show us am I really not going to heal this person because it is the Sabbath? You know your word so I won’t share the other instances.

Abortion breaks my heart too, but God loved me enough to give me the right to choose and free will to live my life so that it means so much when I choose to live it for Him.

I’m not writing to change your mind because the Bible has already shown me how unwavering peoples beliefs can be to the point of nailing Him to a cross. But I just wanted to express that it really does break my heart to see how many people here choose “pro-life” as an end all be all above the other atrocities that impact me and my loved ones daily. And that is where white privilege exists. When the president of your country tells a white supremacist group on national television to “stand back and stand by” you can literally afford to say that yes you disagree with some of his actions but the rights of the unborn matter more. So thank you for caring greatly about the unborn black and brown babies, just not as much as when they are born.

    • Hi Lauraly, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this. I can feel the passion behind your words, and I appreciate you joining the conversation. I care about all life at all stages of life: from conception to natural death. I do not agree with President Trump on much his actions, behaviors, and personal rhetoric/history…but he is currently representing the Republican Party, which I do support much of, abortion being first and foremost. Thank you for stopping by. Hugs and love xox

  54. It is admirable to be the voice of those who are unborn. They deserve life and deserve to have a voice. I would challenge all those that take this stance to acknowledge that life continues after the womb. Those that can not care for themselves deserve to receive the same care from those who lobbied for them getting here. Furthermore, those born into this world deserve to have a voice. We should be fighting to make sure those less fortunate than us have their needs not only voiced but attended too.

    • I read a post earlier about the politicizing of issues. Both parties do it! They take Christian values and use them to garner votes! Now, I know you and many others like myself spend time in the word and are familiar with the laws. What we do know after all our study is that sin is sin! There is no greater sin! And also, the notion that one sin is responsible for the evil we experience each day is irresponsible and not true! The adversary uses each aspect of human immorality to bring about destruction.

      • you’re right – the evil one is certainly on the prowl and has absolutly been using the events of 2020 to lead people astray

    • thank you so much! amen to that – we must be the voice for the voiceless! Hugs and love xox
