Well, I simply couldn’t let the week go by without at least touching on that dumpster fire of a debate on Tuesday night.
And believe me when I say that I know full well that by doing so, I am dipping my toe into a potentially explosive pool of water. But then, when has that ever stopped me.
I, like the rest of America, watched the debate with dismally low expectations, and left the program emotionally exhausted, and utterly dejected.
Now look, I’m not going to get into the nitty gritty here. If you’re looking for in-depth political commentary, there are a myriad of more highly qualified minds than this noggin to nit pick and fact check every grossly uttered phrase from the three debaters on stage last night — and yes, I’m including Chris Wallace’s horrific and blatantly biased moderation in that, because he clearly had ulterior motives.
And while I would really love to get into the weeds about how Biden avoided answering whether or not he’d pack the Supreme Court; how he never denounced Antifa, and how he completely avoided answering what Hunter did to warrant the mayor of Moscow’s WIFE to gift him 3.5 million dollars…
And not to mention Trump’s ill-worded denouncement of white supremacy….
I’m going to approach the debate from a different point of view.
Is this demonstration of behavior really what we want to be holding up to our children and future generations as “celebrated behavior” – and character to aspire to?
Turning off the debate, I was so demoralized, quite frankly, at just the abject disrespect and disgraceful behavior put on display by both parties — and Chris Wallace, for that matter.
Here you’ve got President Trump, who was being a complete bully — incessantly interrupting Biden, taking reprehensible cheap shots at Joe: bringing up Hunter’s drug problems, calling out Biden’s position in his graduating class: calling him “not smart”; and coming off with simply an air of superiority.
While, Biden – was just completely disrespectful with childish name calling, like you’d find on the middle school play ground. He called President Trump a clown, a racist, “the worst president we’ve ever had,” and at one point, brashly muttering, “Will you shut up, man?“
Are you kidding me? How can we tell our children not to say “shut up,” when our candidate for President is spewing it on national television?
It was downright embarassing for our country. Period.
These are really the men that we want to elect to run our great nation?
What does that communicate to our young people about the values we esteem, and the moral character we champion in this nation?
Look – I know I’m opening up a big ol’ can of worms with that one, and our current President — but that display during the debate was downright disgraceful.
And Chris Wallace was no help. Sure, he was there to moderate, and at times it was like he was trying to hold back snapping rottweilers. But Wallace, himself, set out to debate Trump, and defend Biden – even at one point feeding Biden the answer as he was grasping to remember the question.
It was a shameful display of juvenile energy, all the way around. Any good, intelligent discourse was completely lost on us, due to their petulant behavior and bombastic delivery.
Is it too much to ask for respectful dialogue? Is it too great a request to demand CIVIL exchanges in debates? Sure, I understand that things can get heated, and passions can bring out the bulldog sides of people, but you can communicate your argument without personally attacking the other person.
Honesty. Integrity. Respect. A willingness to listen. An openness to creative compromise and bridge building. A steadfast moral compass.
Is that too much to ask for from our politicians? Politics have become such a hotbed of fierce divisive energy, where differences in ideas or political beliefs translate to personal hatred, distrust, and animosity. When did that ever become okay?
Call me crazy, but I have faith in humanity, that we are able to peacefully coexist, despite political/religious/personal differences.
Romans 14:13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother’s way.
I pray that we can all take the mature step to be willing to listen to others with differing opinions and political beliefs. That we may have the courage to hear one another, and harbor respect and understanding.
And please, God, may that be exemplified by those we are electing to our highest office.

It was awful, horrible, sad. Like you, I was dismayed at the juvenile behavior of both candidates. And like you said, Wallace was no help either. This is really the best we can do? George Carlin was right. It’s so embarrassing. They keep encouraging everyone to “Vote.” What for? There are no more principles or moral standards by either party. I’ll vote, but it won’t be for President. I’m not even sure I’m voting for local Congressman out here due to how vicious each candidate is. Politics are so dirty that it brings out the ugly side in people. Even friends, who insist they’re always right. Baloney.

My solution:
Having the moderator able to kill their mics is only a start. Put them in individual rooms with cameras, or even better – separate soundproof bubbles.
That way when they get cut off, they can yell and scream all they want, and behave like the barely trained hyenas that they are! Silent hyenas, that is…
Finally, I pledge that if I don’t see substantial improvement in behavior all around in the next debate, I intend to launch a movement to pointedly boycott the third one. You see, I have my own kill switch.

These last two election cycles have made me sick to my stomach. The candidates presented to us from the Democratic and Republican parties have offered little more than name recognition to the American people.

Not sure which candidate was talking out of both sides of their mouth more,but as scripture says “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways”(James 1:8). As the comedian Ron White said “You can’t fix stupid” and watching two grown men act 5 makes it hard to decide what child should be in office. Yet we must pray God gives us clarity to make the right decision of what is best for our country.God Bless You.

I thought the Biden p/Wallace tag team would be more formidable. Trump had to be obnoxious to be heard over Biden and Wallace. Trump won, Wallace came in a distant second and Joe and hos earpiece team came in way back in the pack. What did Joe tell you he was for? Nothing. But he kissed the uber left and Sanders/AOC supporters good-bye. Proof is in the pudding as Trump has done more for America in 47 months than Joe has done in 47 years. That is documentable fat.

Trump is always going to be Trump. I know what to expect from him. Biden I didn’t (and still don’t) know very well but he certainly didn’t impress me with his adolescent demeanor and refusal to answer simple questions with a yes or no. What comforts me is knowing that God is sovereign and He is in control. I have one vote and I’ll use it but, beyond that, I pray that God will have mercy on this mixed up country of ours.

I think the next debate needs a new format. If you interrupt the other person’s speaking time, they get 10 more seconds for every interruption, if you stoop to baseless personal attacks, the other person gets 20 seconds more, if you call the other person names or cast aspersions on their character, the other person gets 30 seconds. The trouble is one person has over 30,000 lies to his credit in the last 4 years and his main plan is to attack the individual opposite with lies and innuendos. If you call the news fake enough, people believe it. All those who watch Fox, need to watch CNN. All those who watch CNN, need to watch Fox. Get educated, get a variety of opinions, make an informed vote. Oh, and as soon as possible, bring in a 3rd party, a 4th party and so on. There are more sides to a matter than the polarizing 2 opinions my Southern friends continue to face. Lastly, please God, bring back some decorum. if I wanted to watch children argue, I could go out on the street.

I saw who they got for a moderator and that sealed the deal for me to skip it. Seriously though, why can’t we get two candidates who can make it through at least 3 sentences without getting distracted? I hate the truism that we get the leaders we deserve in a democracy. But seriously…they have a lot in common with Facebook and the Twitter sphere. They are the Vine candidates. You get only so many seconds before the video switches.

Yep! I agree with you on all of this. I would add that a caller on a local radio talk show called in today and shared that the way Trump talked might work at a Trump rally, but there was no way his antics or even any of the [lack of] substance would have appealed to the myriad of people who are on the fence, A debate should solidify the core of supporters – yes, but the aim of each candidate ought to be to sway the undecided. I am not undecided – I vote prolife – but oh how I wish I could vote for a person who is actually “presidential.”

Dumpster fire sounds about right. ЁЯЩБ I agree with everything you say, but I wonder to what extent we asked for this. Republicans had a large assortment of candidates to choose from 4 years ago in the primaries, and they chose the one who would name-call, lie regularly, and say unmentionable things right there on the debate stage because he was on their side and angry. HeтАЩs still angry. Not so convinced heтАЩs on our side though.

And if Biden had been respectful he would have gained the day. But the display was not admirable at all, either way.

Tuesday’s debate was an example of the sad state of our union. The vitriol, the disrespect and the bullying that went on during the debate is what is happening every day at the dinner tables, the front lawns and at the gas pumps of the country. We no longer identify as Americans; we are Democrats or Republicans. We might as well be Crips and Bloods. And that is what happens when you demonize those whose beliefs differ from your own.
Joe Biden was not given the chance to answer questions about his son, Hunter. Trump just shouted him down, determined to humiliate and demean. He dangled the bait, badgered and bullied until Biden called him a clown and told him to shut up. Not right, not presidential, but certainly more benign than than the insults and disrespect Trump regularly spews.
Biden definitely hedged on whether or not he was for stacking the Supreme Court. The American people need straight answers. We need honest answers. And we need leaders who will answer with humility, dignity and respect.

Dumpster fire is right! I thought debate format was Debater 1 has so much time to state the pro side, Debater 2 rebuts with same amount of time. Moderator calls time. Round 2. And so on and so forth. I haven’t seen a US presidential debate before (and I still haven’t. I saw snippets.) I guess that’s not the format followed for these kind of debates, but I expected it to be just more organized, never mind civil. All the constant overtalking, not to mention name-calling and so forth. Yeah, it was bad. Quite shocking! I expected entertaining, but it wasn’t even that. Not my idea of entertainment.

I watched no more than 30 minutes тАУ if that! It got to the point where each one failed to answer a question from Wallace or accurately answer a point made by their opponent. The debater in me wanted to scream!!!
A fact-check article today showed neither man was in control of his grasp of things, which is scary when you consider the winner will be talking to world leaders. And not all of them friendly. And, as you pointed out, the utter lack of civility by both was completely disgusting.
I have faith in people here and there, but not humanity as a whole. Why? Well, the business world IтАЩm engaged in is utterly without morals and shame. ItтАЩs only wrong if you get caughtтАжmaybe. If you scream enough, you can be тАЬrightтАЭ through sheer brow-beating. My faith in most people has been shredded. Then thereтАЩs Revelation and the Bible generally. There are prophecies of people with тАЬitching ears,тАЭ ready to listen to whatever pleases them. Prophecies warning against those who call evil good and good evil. Finally, will come the ani-christ, whom most will follow to their doom.
Not wanting to end this as a downer, remember that there is our whole Christian community тАУ B3 and more! We must cling together and support each other. We can keep from being entirely jaded, because we associate with those who are of Christ! We can lift each other up with love for each other and hope in GodтАЩs sure promise of salvation. I just don;t know what to say, we turned it off, but it’s all day long on social media and cable. Non stop commentators, politicians, and even the Today show is political. I stopped watching that after 20 years and I miss Al Roker. I thought maybe the virus would humble us enough to realize that God is in charge, but too many want power. It’s a mess

Apparently unlike the rest of the nation, I did not watch or listen to the debate, though I caught the highlights and the lowlights, later on. As a student of rhetoric, I find I cannot abide to encounter the mangled mess that politicians make out of the practice (of rhetoric). I figure the problem is with truth, the foundation and the purpose of rhetoric–or what the ancient Greeks called virtue. In the world or at least in our world, ever since Watergate and Vietnam and Korea just before, we surrendered truth in favor of the lie. The value for us became not that cheating is bad but that getting caught cheating is bad.
Anyway, I have to speak of the candidates generally. Yes, Trump is a bully; and bullies are fragile and frightened. Biden has his problems, too. If he serves, we’ll learn more about them. What Chris Wallace’s problems are, I do not know.
I have a friend who asked me over last night so we could watch a movie and not deal with the debate. He felt strongly about his situation, mainly that if he were on his own, he would turn on the debate. And as an expert in communication himself and someone aware of the world around him, he didn’t want to bring it or himself down in his own estimation.
I’m sorry to be addressing the event by addressing the lack of it. But that’s an issue, too. If such engagements as what occurred on Tuesday were civil with a respect for rules of exchange, then more people might watch and listen. Especially those who believe there should be more real dialogue in the world, as there should be more goodness.

I was left feeling upset, discouraged. It was ugly and wrong on so many levels. And I realized afterward after much deep thought that it was a deceptive distraction. The One we need to focus on is God, who uses politics to fulfill His will for those of us who pray in faith. He does what is best for all of us and all this is in His hands. It was wonderful honestly. It gave me affirmation of my long held belief that the two party system is broken and corrupt. As a Libertarian I was thrilled at the outcome, Im not sure how anyone can look at the performance and be happy about it regardless of what side you are on. As an American? Im just sad we got to this point. Assigning blame to one person, or three is an oversimplification of the larger issue.
A two party system inevitably boils down to us vs them, this is where we are at its a shame.

With 32-days until Election Day, it would be nice to have two professional candidates who present a “presidential” demeanor to debate the questions posed like adults. Tonight’s debate was chaotic and symbolized traditional Washington politics to a tee. If U.S. citizens were appalled by both men’s poor debate performance, as they should be, what does that say to the rest of the world? As for Chris Wallace, I was surprised because he is usually a straightforward even-handed moderator. At one time, our nation elected the best of the best, but now, it seems, more often than not, we must elect the best of the worst because the best of the best prefer not to go through the Washington meat grinder. I agree with some of your points. “Politics have become such a hotbed of fierce divisive energy, where differences in ideas or political beliefs translate to personal hatred, distrust, and animosity.” I also want to avoid opening up the proverbial “can of spicy worms”. But as an educator who moderated students’ debates and also taught them the rules that should be observed with respect to all, I must stress that Chris Wallace failed miserably as a moderator. My students would have given him an “F”. We expected Debater #1 to be forceful and he managed to throw the curve ball and distract everyone. I hope the American people will know to read the transcript carefully and with a critical eye and mind. I was embarrassed for all of them.

I couldn’t agree more with everything you said!! I gifted myself a few weeks ago and deleted my Facebook account. There are too many reasons to list, but you touched on one of the reasons when you spoke of the divisiveness we are currently experiencing. It has spilled over into friendships and families and it is leaving a wound on our souls.
I pray for our beautiful country. I know that the anger and disrespect we witness with our leaders does not represent Americans as a whole. But the more we condone it the more it will become acceptable behavior.
I continue to look for the helpers, just as Mr. Rogers had said. Thank you for your candidness and how you are steadfast in your values. I have so much respect for that in a person.

You are right on point with what happened during the debate. I am almost embarrassed to call myself an American right now. We are, at this point, a laughing stock to the entire world. I also pray God will Help our leaders to come together and help their fellow Americans. We need leaders who will do whats best for the citizens of this country and stop bad mouthing each other. I turned it off five minutes in. I totally get the tactic the president was going for (Biden clearly had canned “lines” ready that he couldn’t fire off) but I thought it was awful. Biden did the same thing to Rand Paul in 2012 (people forget VP debates quicker than who won the bachelor last season) but something about 2 wrongs… In the end we all win with ACB being nominated (and confirmed) which will at least stave off a far left turn I hope…

I couldn’t watch this live and after reading your post, I almost didn’t want to bother watching the replay. I’m hardly 30 minutes into it and I have absolutely no idea what either of them are trying to say. Because every time Biden tried to speak, Trump interrupted. Biden continued because it was clear he wasn’t going to be able to get a word in edgewise. But then Biden was also making comments under his breath, which is a form of interrupting. You couldn’t (or it was selective hearing more like) even hear the “moderator” many times. I’ve taught preschool and kindergarteners before and getting them to stop fighting and arguing was easier than this! (And also age appropriate.) I’ve never watched a debate so I don’t really know what to expect, but I’m pretty sure this can’t be called a debate. You are exactly right. It was childish and honestly, unproductive. Having lived overseas, I often got a glimpse of how other countries saw us. And I can’t help but wondering what people think of our country now. It makes me sad and disappointed that this is the image we are showing. Many times, I wished that I didn’t look like an American on the outside because I didn’t want to be associated with things like this. Revelation has been on my mind a lot with everything going on. Not because I think the things occurring are signs of the end times. But because Jesus needs to rescue us. Jesus alone can put an end to all of this. As a Christian, I will do my part and do my best to live like Christ and be an example. But in the end, only Jesus, God Himself, can save our country.

I agree that this was a total S-show of a debate. From TrumpтАЩs unsurprising bully behaviors to the inability of the moderator to…mediate to the poor example of statesmanship this represents.
But I gotta say, Clinton tried taking the higher debate behavior road with him in тАШ16 (like the right would have just hung an тАЬemotional womanтАЭ sign on her if she did try to fight TrumpтАЩs behavior by returning his) and it did not good. FWIW, IтАЩm embarrassed that Joe played and lost the interruption game (T: 71/B & W: 19 combined!) but am glad he at least showed his irritation by asking Trump to shut up and by calling him a clown. Because thatтАЩs what TrumpтАЩs turn at statesmanship has done – turned politics from a figurative to a literal circus. His bully behaviors in the GOP primary debates should have disqualified him for voters and didnтАЩt. That tells me we are in deep doo-doo as a country until those supporters learn how to properly vet and hire a guy to this type of job. Well, and even worse, for his supporters who knew his behavior was unacceptable and voted for him anyway. IтАЩll tell ya, *those* people took a gamble that has paid off incredibly poorly. They didnтАЩt just lose and bankrupt their character by doing so, they dragged the country down, too.

Glad you are slowly opening your eyes to Trump. If there is an underlying wish I have for you is to see that he uses those who have faith for his political gain. Sure that has led to some legislation that has benefited your cause, but the shadow side is evil. He mocks people in recovery, his DHS office forces immigrant women to get hysterectomies and separate kids from their family. Imagine if Nazarenes forced Jesus to be removed from Joseph and Mary? They were in same situation as the immigrants just looking for refuge and all they could get was a manger. Four less years of Trump would greatly heal this country. Happy to say, I didn’t even turn it on. I knew it would be neither fair or balanced. Just saw the low-lights the next day. Also, I have a huge problem with the Biden family letting him continue (and I’m not a Biden supporter). He clearly is in the beginning stages of some form of dementia. What kind of family subjects their loved one to what he’s facing? I’m glad God knows what He’s doing. I’m not sure why there is a need for debates at this point, except for tradition. Are there really people who still don’t know who they’re voting for at this point? Can we just vote and get the whole thing over with please?

I took the whole episode in stride. I even found some humor in it all. I will say I was surprised to see Mr. Biden actually more coherent than I expected. And the President was much less professional than I had hoped. Ultimately, the American people are the losers, for we did not really get an opportunity to clearly guage where the candidates were on a number of positions. Lastly, the moderator was heinously biased and woefully prepared to execute his responsibilities.

If you didn’t like the debate then it is actually all the more reason to ensure everybody votes. Politicians have always insulted each other. Churchill made some real zingers.
However to me the problem lies in the refusal to listen or to allow others to speak. Isn’t that what democracy is about?- the right for everybody to have a voice. I respectfully suggest people ensure their voices are heard at the ballot box.
Churchill ( I realise he had his issues too.)was once asked for a 2p coin, so that a political rival could call a friend.
His response was”Here’s 4p call both of them.”

I didn’t watch the debate. I will vote for the candidate whose policies most closely align with God’s standards and keep praying that this country turns around… but it doesn’t turn around at the federal level. It turns around on the ground level, when families get down on their knees to repent and praise and pursue God. The entire atmosphere would change.

I am currently caring for my mom who is the beginning stages of dementia. She wanted to watch the debate but 15 minutes in I had to change it because she was getting so agitated. This will probably be her last Presidential election and she can’t even sit to see who she might consider electing because the candidates all upset her so much.

I was embarrassed as well! Having two grown men acting like children made our country look bad. I was def disappointed in Biden! I hoped he would model something Presidential and he got frustrated. As for Trump, he is like that in every interview and tweet, so we expected that behavior from him. This country needs the media to start reporting facts and not political opinion. Without them being unbiased, people canтАЩt make a sound decision. Media isnтАЩt supposed to cover the trail, but is supposed to print truth do the citizens can remove nonfunctioning or dis functional leadership!

The passing of time often teaches us things. I often lookback at my own comments and wonder how I ever used to believe certain things. Respectful debate starts with us.

To the point! What we hoped to see and hear was not what we got! With all the hype and pre-fight buildup by myriads of talking heads, both men came out with full testosterone levels ready to butt heads! Most folks have already picked their favorite and hoped theirs would still be standing after the initial meeting. The year 2020 has left us a complicated mess to work through. Our decision will be whether we want to continue our founding principles of individual freedom, individual responsibility, and self-accountability, or do we want America to move toward socialism so that the government decides our lives for us. There is no easy answer and prayer is the only way to reach a true decision with GodтАЩs guidance. For 240 years, Americans have fought and died for our love of freedom and I pray it was not in vain! Vote as your heart tells you!

I agree it’s pretty pathetic for debators to get so out of hand.
But someone made the point on another forum I was on that this debate, or any debate this year, is not really about debate at all.
I sympathize with Trump more, he knew the moderator was trying to slam him, so I can’t blame him for not really feeling he would be taken seriously. That may not be an excuse to do a bad job, but I think Trump and Biden are both aware that no matter what they say, the media will make a joke and a horse and pony show out of the whole thing, people will blindly defend either side, and at this point, we are really just watching a cockfight.
It’s become much more like a rap battle, who can roast who better?
Is it stupid? Yes.
But it makes sense, our culture does everything for the memes, and what will trend on the internet, the shift in format is all I’d expect from people who want to get air time. They are playing the game they feel they have to play.
That said, I think Trump makes better decisions overall that don’t get fairly covered by the News, or don’t even get mentioned. I’ve always felt his TV personna to be an act to get publicity, and I understand why people don’t like it, but I think we all know, he’d never get coverage fairly from the media anyway, and creating sensations is his best way to ensure airtime. Like Gordon Ramsey does in Hell’s Kitchen.
The percentage of people who will actually make informed decisions while voting is at an all time low, so getting the votes by getting attention does make sense, albeit it gets ugly.
I guess I’m saying I don’t hate the player, I hate the game. Even Biden seems tired of this charade, but what choice does he have, clearly it’s what’s expected of him.
As for Trump, what choice does he have either? He could give the calmest, most rational statement, and people would still twist it out of context. Someone surveyed college students, and quoted Democrats to them, but told them it was Trump, and all the students took the worst possible interpretation of the quotes…until they found out who actually said it, then they changed their tune. I have a feeling the same would happen with Republicans.
So, yeah… it’s a dumpster fire, and goodness knows media wants to keep it that way.

Caralyn: I am sorry to say that I don’t share your belief that we can all get along based on who we are as human beings. We are all judgmental, have prejudices, and Scripture says that the human heart is of all things the most deceitful thing there is. We are told that there is “none that is good, not one”. I know that with the indwelling of the Spirit that we can be better than we are left to our own inclinations, but we are still fallen creatures capable of almost anything. How I wish you were right about that, but I don’t think that is the view the Bible paints of us as humans. I love your thoughtfulness and your high hopes for humanity, but if there is anything I’ve learned over my decades of life it is that if you hope for the best from everyone across the board you will be largely disappointed and will feel betrayed. That sounds horribly pessimistic, I know, and I’m not knocking your for your hopefulness – it is a beautiful quality to have! I just fear that you will be grossly disappointed. It won’t be until Christ returns that we’ll finally all get along the way God intended from the beginning. THANK YOU for what you do!

A Debate is supposed to be a formal discussion on any particular subject, where opposing arguments are put forward. Not a verbal dogfight with jib Jab, innuendos and name calling. To be precise Trash Talking. My Mother was a great Teacher, when a conversation got to that level, she would look at you intensely, let you talk yourself out of breath. Then got up and walked away, without a word you knew she thought you were a fool. As far as getting along with People, It’s just a Cordial approach to being Civilized. Not being Antagonistic and Bombastic, once again Mom would say ” Get off your high Horse. Maybe I am Unique but I got along with John Gutfreund ( The King of Wall Street) as well as I treat and respect an Indigent Person, not knowing how he fell through the cracks. I get along with Christians, Muslims,Jews, Catholics and Witness, I can even have a Debate with an Atheist without calling him Satan as I’ve been called by someone trying to convert me , God Bless.
