There was a very interesting article that was released over the weekend by Pew Research entitled, “8 Facts About Catholics and Politics in the U.S.”
Now first – Pew Research is not some “pew”-as-in-church-“pew” religious organization. No, it is Pew, as in the “nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world.” (Their words.) In other words, it is legit.
And this article was fascinating. Much of it was as to be expected, but some of it, was actually quite eye opening.
This article came on my radar when I was listening to a faith-based podcast called “The Word on Fire Show” with Bishop Robert Barron. (I know – I am such a nerd.) But Bishop Barron was breaking down the article, and I was so intrigued, that I had to go and check out what secular society says about catholicism and politics, myself.
And I want to focus on two of these “8 Facts” tonight, because they go hand in hand, and they were particularly startling.
Even though – going into the article, my expectations were grim, because as a society, we’ve left God behind. And the number of proclaimed Catholics have dwindled so severely, and the majority…like Biden, (who has been refused communion because of his stance of abortion)…are “culturally” Catholic…aka: Catholic in name only.
But here they are: “When it comes to specific policy issues, Catholics are often more aligned with their political party than with the teaching of the church.“
And, basically same-same-but-different: “Catholics view religious organizations as forces for good in society, but a clear majority say churches and other religious organizations should keep out of politics.“
Which just goes to show, that as a society, we are worshiping politics. You can see it playing out in how the news is covered and portrayed; in how people post about their political beliefs on social media; in how the country has exploded in protests; in how fiercely divisive we’ve become: politics has become a religion…for people on both sides of the aisle.
But the thing that is so sad to me, is how what *should* be informing our political positions, has been absolutely thrown out — by even those who consider themselves faithful people.
The fact is: the position one takes politically should be dictated by their religious beliefs. Or spoken secularly: by their personal moral code.
A person should look at the issues, decided what they believe is morally right on the issues, and vote accordingly.
And what is the driving force behind morality? The Word of God. Jesus. His teachings. His church.
It makes me overwhelmingly sad to see that even those proclaimed Catholics — religious morality is not being taken into account in the voting booth. It is such a shame.
If we don’t vote with our hearts and ballots aligned with God’s teachings, why even vote??
Honestly. If we’re not voting to stand up for what is morally right in God’s eyes, then we should literally just shrug as we watch the world burn in flames before us, as society goes to hell in a handbasket – literally. (OK, figuatively.)
Churches keep out of politics?? Yes they must stay out directly, but I want a pastor to get up at the pulpit on Sunday and bring the truth about where God stands on issues: like abortion. Like serving the poor. Like the death penalty. Like euthanasia. Like social justice. Like environmental protection. Then let people decide who to vote for.
Allow me to not mince words here: churches should absolutely be informing their congregations about the importance of their vote — and what the catholic position is on these issues.
And it’s tough. Because there are aspects of these issues that are morally right on both sides. But there are certain issues that rise to the top of the priority list, and I applaud any pastor to voice those views, even if it is unpopular.
Pastors — standing In Persona Christi — need to inform their sheep of what is at stake in this election.
Simply saying to “get out there and vote!” is simply not good enough anymore.
What we should really be saying is, “Get out there and vote in alignment with your moral standards.” Or how about: “Vote according to God’s teachings.”
WWJD? What Would Jesus Do? How about HWJV? How Would Jesus Vote?
That’s what I hope we start praying about today, in preparation for election day.
Because it’s time we stop listening to what our political parties say is “dogma,” and rather, listening to God’s “dogma.”
And spoiler alert: they don’t exactly match up.

Hmmm. On “the issues,” I am not for Republican or Democrat but for humanity in Light of God. I find it difficult to vote solely on one issue — say, saving the environment but that candidate refuses to feed the 1 out of 6 of us in the U.S.

Clergymen should in my view just teach wisely and in so doing enable their congregations to make Godly decisions for themselves without advocating a particular choice.

You are so right on all counts. Here in Australia voting is compulsory so everyone has to make a decision and vote accordingly. Our Pastors never tell us who to vote for but they will always point out issues that go against what the word of God teaches. We are so blessed to have a practicing Christian as our PM especially in this Covid world. We thank God for him.

As a cradle Catholic, converted to nondenominational Baptist, I do believe that faith is of utmost importance to those who vote. I really think that Catholics should stop giving Joe Biden a hard time about his professed Catholic faith, because his life experience indicates that his faith is wrought from hard battles. I mean, he lost a child, and that is something not everyone would understand, so I trust his faith is not “in name only,” because he has fought the more challenging battle of reckoning with life and death, especially with one of his own flesh and blood, his child. Please don’t lose sight of that, dear Catholic Believers, and please keep praying for us all.

Hi Caralyn! First, excellent as always! You are exactly correct. If people don’t start voting their values, and said values should be coming from Christ as He is the standard for truth, then we only have ourselves to blame when the country falls apart. Personally, I can’t get over the idea that some have about who they’re voting for. I’ve literally read where people say they have all these Godly, moral values, but they don’t like the President so they’re going to vote for the other party, which stands completely opposite to the values they claim to espouse. And they seem to be brain dead about all the President has done these past four years to promote the values they say they stand for. Talk about a Twilight Zone populace.
Second, I’m going to jump on your case a bit for a moment. What is this “I am such a nerd” business? What? You’re a nerd because you have a brain and high intelligence and you choose to use them more than most Millennials out there? Because you can write intelligently about a wide range of topics, and when you don’t feel you know enough, you spend time researching before you speak out? Because you can carry a conversation on a blog post that doesn’t sound similar to, “And then we like went to a club and like I couldn’t believe who was actually there wearing last month’s rags and like I wondered if my outfit made me look like a Kardashian.” OK. Rant finished. And I apologize to you and anyone reading who might be offended as that wasn’t my intent.
I discovered your blog because you showed interest in someone who was struggling with issues regarding her faith. It would be nice if churches actually taught about Gods stand on abortion,voting etc,but Jesus never taught of what the world was busy doing around Him. He taught daily in the churches of His day of what His Fathers will was for the life of man. He said He was not of the world and neither are those who truly follow Him. We cannot be a soldier of Christ and be heavily concerned with the ways of the world. (2 Timothy 2:4) 4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. We are to pray for our leader’s and God who knows the heart’s of all will bring to pass His will as He sees fit.Blessings.

This will likely be contrarian to the majority of your comments but as a pagan one of the hardest things that we struggle with is when our Christian friends allow others who are not prophets divine the will or word of god. Christianity is very clear that the prophets speak on gods will. I agree that church, regardless of denomination should have robust discussion on relevant issues politically and socially. However outside of the sermon and outside of the main house of worship.
If I recall its Peter who in the new testament wrote about acceptance of the ruler, no matter his faith as he is put there by god. 2:13 I believe. There is also Isaiah who makes it very simple by stating god is the only law which is needed for the faithful. I think its great that Christians talk in earnest about todays issues. In the house that was built to worship god ? If I recall thats what Christ was upset at all those years ago, the politics that had entered the temples.

I never ever understood how any God-fearing person would ever vote for anyone who wants to kill babies. Period. If you vote for those politicians that are ok with that, you cannot fear God. Period. I am sure many will disagree with that but I am quite certain the Bible agrees. And everyone who faces God someday (which is everyone), I would definitely recommend voting in alignment with life. We are as responsible to God for our vote as for our words and actions. It matters. We will see God and we need to vote in alignment with His standards. Such a true and relevant blog. I am a member of a conservative Lutheran church body and until recently this topic was avoided all together. But more pastors are beginning to speak out in a manner you suggested. Personally my vote is along the pro life line My belief is the stance held on life, be it the beginning or the end, is central to all other policies. Once the sanctity of life is disregarded things begin to come apart. Glad you got to Ohio. Here in Wisconsin things are not going so smoothly. Great writing. One of the reasons that pastors don’t preach the truth is they are bound by the 501(c)3 nonprofit status. I know the President rescinded this somewhat a few years ago, but am not sure how many chose to undo the nonprofit status. And I do think the church is going beyond the four walls now, what I feel is a positive side to the lockdowns. I think it is more and more on the internet, and home churches. I don’t have much experience with the Catholic church, so I don’t know if home churches are something that would be done.

I definitely think that the Bible has a lot to say about politics and that Christians should be influenced by it when it comes to how to vote. I don’t agree with churches or Christians telling other people how to vote though. It’s a difficult balance and I’m not sure how to achieve it. I’d love to see the church praying for governments and leaders as well as taking a stand for what is right but across parties. Too often Christians come down on one side or the other over one issue without really looking into all the other policies of the party. That’s my opinion. Of course I’m not in the US so it might be different for you guys.

It is indeed a sad state of affairs when politicians tell us how to worship and the religious tell us how to vote. We should rather seek to DO GOOD and follow the cardinal virtues of wisdom (know what’s within your control and what isn’t), courage (persist and resist), temperance (self-control), and justice (thought and action resulting in the common good).

Caralyn, this is such a great article I just simply sat here and enjoyed it! Every time I started thinking something as I read your lead-in thoughts, you came around and nailed it! For Example:

But then you buttoned that one up with “Vote according to God’s teachings.” Your conclusion was great! HWJV. Love it!! HEY! How hard would it be to have HWJV on one of those plastic bracelets on your B3 goodies site?? Might be tough to get done before this election, but you could have them ready for the mid-term elections. Start a new trend!
I’ll nit-pick on one comment: “…there are aspects of these issues that are morally right on both sides.” I’ll disagree with that one. I submit to you that if both sides of a moral issue appear to be right, you haven’t really defined it well enough, you haven’t perhaps found the divisions in it to clarify it. Or, possibly, the Biblically moral position is a hard one to take, so both sides LOOK right. What do you think?

It appears we have very different faith traditions [I’m a Unitarian Universalist] and lean towards opposite ends of the political spectrum [but diversity is the spice of life and I always enjoy reading your blog]….and I couldn’t agree with you more. One of the things that draws me the most to my UU congregation is the fact that everyone– including the Minister– is very active with social justice causes and politicians whose views align with our beliefs. This is crucial for me. I could never be a part of a faith community that doesn’t encourage people to advocate for the principles they hold dear. It makes me happy to know that fellow congregants put their money and their time where their mouth is, and donate/volunteer accordingly.

Well written as always, and you make excellent and well-informed points. I absolutely agree that our religious beliefs do, and should, infuse how we act in the world, including how we vote. The heightened responsibility is always when we stake a claim as Jesus’ ambassador to the world, we take on far more responsibility for what we do and say. We’re representing His Kingdom to an increasingly hostile world. And the overwhelming question then is, how they see us matters. Not how it should be, sadly, but how it actually is. I can see that by making stopping abortion your “one thing”, and I totally agree that it’s super important—you run the risk of being blinded to other things that also affect the poor, oppressed, and voiceless in our society. And cause thousands and millions to suffer and die also. Directly, I suppose I mean some of the girls that are desperately seeking these awful abortions. I know you personally contribute to the causes to help them, but I only know that from the comment you made to me one time. So it would lead, if thousands of unwanted babies are brought into this world, might not that have another dire affect? I absolutely don’t want abortions, I just think all society’s issues are much more complex. And, as I said before, I view self-proclaimed Christian writers (like me, sister! as God’s ambassadors. I do admire your ability to be passionate and single-hearted about this issue, though. I think I would really like you.

But if you’re a one-issue voter, as you’ve explained you are previously, what does the rest of it really matter? Putting kids in cages, sexual assault, divorce after divorce, trying to kill healthcare, serial lying — it doesn’t matter when you’re a one issue voter, right?

Joshua was not being sarcastic; he has a point and asked a relevant question. You’ve engaged with other commenters, even if they don’t share the same beliefs as you, but when it comes to difficult conversations about other very relevant issues you’re willing to brush him off.

I definitely am open to having difficult and uncomfortable conversations — i welcome them, because i think they can be very healing and bring about mutual respect and understanding! what i didn’t appreciate was the attacking tone with which i felt the comment was issued. I try to create a positive, safe space here on the internet for ALL viewpoints, beliefs, religions, ideas, etc. And it is in that spirit of positive cooperation that i want to have conversation and dialogue. But I will not have my comments section turn into a slugging match or a mud slinging free-for-all. I respect boundaries, and I respect respect. And I would hope that my readers not only understand, but also participate in such as well.

I enjoyed this post, however, I think the issues are not as black and white as we would like them to be. For one, our bi-partisan system has helped to create this polarity so that we believe we are either on one side of an issue or another, and that there can be no crossing over of issues. The fact is, if many Christians lived out every aspect of their beliefs, we would find ourselves strangely straddling both parties. This puts a lot of us in awkward positions because it means we don’t fit in to either side, and nor should we. As Christians, our primary citizenship isn’t even in any of these earthly countries, so why Christians so always fired up when governments aren’t taking a “Christian” approach to issues is beyond me. We should’t expect anything different.
However, I am also not advocating for passively sitting by either. We should excercise the rights that are given to us, but also remember that they are human institutions. As one of my pastors has said, if he thought politics would make a difference in the world, we would have been a politician. Instead he is a pastor. If anything, we need to simply start being the church, and actually living out our calling by God, which will mean rejecting the cultural Christian norms, which include a lot of our common ideas of what church should look like. Probably, but I would love for some more thoughts on the issues I present.

Well they always say there are two things you don’t talk about. Religion and politics, but to combine the two… well your really asking for trouble. When you got Facebook rigged to sway voters and persuade people not to vote, how to you combat that. The world at this time needs a leader, that what I pray for, for God to give us a man that can lead us out of this mess.

Yes I do agree that they need to be talked about but very often, unless you are talking to open minded people, any discussion ends in argueing. It takes intelligence people to have a forward thinking debate.

The political and secular world seem to have no problem commenting upon the religious world, the world of faith, proscribing what we can and cannot say. This is a modern construct. We have the right, since President Trump restored rights taken away under President Johnson, to speak politically from the pulpit. You’re right, we should embrace it. God bless you always!

It is so sad how some Christians circles are lacking boldness, but I’m grateful our pastor does say to his congregation to vote for he who aligns more to God’s teachings not a political party. This is an election that will shape the future of our lives, our children’s and grandchildren. This is no joke but a serious warfare of spiritual, patriotic, religious, and moral principals that made America such an admired and respected country. And its all at stake by one wrong vote based on a vague and superficial political party ideology. We’re basically opening the doors to the devil to continue to play havoc in this country by voting with politics in mind not…WWJD. God open our eyes to the deception in every present challenge including the lies, deception, and misinformation from the news media, newspapers, etc. related to the Covid hysteria.
