There is a terrible, terrible darkness afoot in American society right now.
One that, sadly, is not getting the air time it so desperately deserves.
And that is the recent spike in hate-driven attacks towards Asian Americans.
Recently, in the last several weeks, assaults on Asian Americans – particularly the elderly – have reached a disturbing high.
With the help of brands like Nike and Kith, and celebrities like Olivia Munn to raise awareness, videos have been circulating on social media, depicting innocent elderly Asian American men and women getting shoved to the ground, beaten with objects, slammed into poles or mailboxes, spit at and/or verbally assaulted with racial slurs.
The cruelty and criminal behavior is absolutely sickening.
And it is going completely unnoticed.
Because the media is stunningly silent on this injustice.
To be completely honest, I probably would not have known about these heartbreaking attacks, had it not been for my boyfriend, who himself is Filipino and part of the Asian American population.
He is angered and outraged and saddened. And so am I.
Asian Americans make up only 5.6 percent of our population, and yet, thanks to the racially insensitive nomenclature “China Virus” and “Wuhan Flu,” they have been the target of everyone’s blame for the pandemic. A stereotype and way of thinking that is completely false, wrong and misdirected.
During the height of the pandemic, from March to December of 2020, there were 2,808 reported hate crimes against Asian Americans. In New York City alone, attacks on Asian Americans in 2020 were up ninefold from the year before.
And in just the past few weeks, there has been an acute spike in attacks.
I fear for my boyfriend’s safety, for the safety of my Asian friends, and for my Asian American brothers and sisters in Christ, across the country. How did we get here? How is this reality? How is hatred so rampant in today’s world?
Sure, we’re all fed up with the pandemic, tired of masks and isolation, angry at the suffering we’ve endured this past year, and desperately long for life to return to normal. But that in no way constitutes or warrants acts of deliberate hatred and cruelty.
Where have we gone so wrong?
People spent the entire summer protesting (and rioting) for Black Lives Matter, but where is the outcry for justice for our Asian brothers and sisters?
Hate is hate is hate, and wrong is wrong is wrong. And any act of injustice deserves to be righted, no matter what skin color, culture, background or creed.
And we all have a role to play in helping the Asian community. If we see something, we need to do something. We cannot be bystanders. We can raise awareness. We can offer support and solidarity to our worried Asian friends. We can stand up for them, if we witness injustice taking place.
To be honest, in many ways, I feel that the BLM protests of this summer, only carved the knife deeper into the divide, and fostered a collective spirit of animosity in our nation, rather than sowing seeds of peace, love or unity.
Which leads me to my question…how do you teach love?
To drive out hate, you must replace it with love. With respect. With understanding and compassion. But how do you teach these things?
One would think they are instilled into us as children, but sadly, as we’ve seen demonstrated on the national stage, that is sadly not always the case.
I knew I wanted to write about this tonight, but had been struggling with how to end it. Because, frankly, “love your neighbor” just seemed incredibly hollow and flat. Especially when a 84 year old Asian man in San Francisco was just shoved to the ground so hard that he died.
“Love your neighbor” doesn’t cut it.
Back at the beginning of the pandemic, my mom included me in a group chat “prayer group” with about 20 of her Bible study friends. And this afternoon, I was moved to actually open the chat thread and read it….something that, to be honest, I rarely ~if ever~ do. As with all of my group chats on my phone, I have them on the “no-notifications” setting. Because…mental health.
But the very last text resonated with my heart, and pertained to this whole ugly situation so well, I wanted to share. It was the prayer from one of her friends for today.
“Jesus…may your love rule in my heart that I may only think, act, and speak with charity and good will for all.”
We must pray for hearts of love. For ourselves, for others and especially for those whose hearts are cold and full of hate. They are, not only the ones who are hardest to pray for, but the ones who need it the most.
The thing about love about this woman’s prayer is that it reminded me that love is an action verb. And to love means that you think with love, act with love and speak with love.
Teaching love…that is sadly a losing battle. Because in order to love, the heart has to change. Walls have to crumble, ice has to melt, and stone must turn to hearts of flesh. And the only one who can truly do that, is Jesus. EZ 36:26 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.“
So what can we do?
We can pray.
There is power in prayer, I believe that with my whole being.
We must pray for those with hearts of stone and hatred, that Jesus transform them, and make them a new creation. Give them eyes to see goodness in others, hearts full of compassion, and spirits brimming with respect and love for others.
A tall order, but I am standing here today, a product of Jesus’ transformative power. Redeeming and restoring, not only my heart of stone in my eating disorder, but also my body: from a lifeless, osteopenic 78 pounds – infertile and afraid,- to a thriving, healthy and strong young woman.
God is in the business of miracles.
And Lord, please blanket our Asian American brothers and sisters in your protection. And calm their fears and anxieties. Help us all want to live and love like You.

This was my worry when the virus became associated with China and Chinese. Who really knows where it originated or how, but ignorance and hate combined means senseless pain and suffereing for the people hated. You are tight. America must do better and people need to be held accountable for their actions, arrested, and sent to jail.

Unfortunately, peaceful protests by BLM supporters (such as taking a knee) were mocked and criticized. Not excusing violence, but people do get desperate to be heard. I fully support prosecuting anyone who commits violence, whether in the name of BLM, “stolen elections,” or bigotry. Too bad some at the top kept calling Covid-19 “the China virus” all last year. Words do have consequences! I wish you and your boyfriend safety and peace 💖

Blaming advocacy on behalf of one group (BLM) for hatred toward another group (Asians) is not helpful.
Also, you might want to stop watching/listening to any news channel that uses the terms “Wuhan flu” or “China virus” (and write to those stations letting them know why you are tuning out).

I’m so sorry you and your boyfriend are experiencing this together Caralyn. But I’m so happy he has you to encourage him. 💙 My husband and I fell in love with Japanese culture, and we have a burden in our hearts for the salvation of Asian peoples. They are beautiful people made in God’s image (like anyone else) who need the Lord. Especially since in countries like China it’s illegal to preach the Gospel. I fully agree with you, Sis’. This is disrespectful and damaging stuff and news I have been hearing about as well. I also have an Asian-American best friend that I would hate to hear how life really became difficult for her as well in America.
It is true that somebody, somewhere will keep complaining about something, but holding hatred in your heart is both devilish and poisonous to the soul. “Well, I was just mad and angry for that moment,” as the only reason and answer why they’ve done what what they’ve done. It’s an odd coincidence because killers and abusers say the exact same quotes as well.
So, I do apologize to your friend as well as my own for having to deal with this side of America that I’ve never seen before; including my grandmother who is 74 right now. Now, how I see it all playing out is that the enemy of God is doing his best to cause destruction within all of God’s children the best ways he can think of. But what the Devil doesn’t know is the different ways God works and His Plans.

Well said. Good of you to stand up for the much maligned Asian community. Hate crimes are rising among many groups. But as you say Blacks have brought it on themselves and Jews, well those Christ haters, are getting what they deserve — I’m sure you believe. If Christ is the only way humans can learn to love each other then a lot of those “victims” are going to be left out. So, I guess it’s up to white American bigots to lead the way — Onward Christian Soldiers.

I was in Beijing practicing Chiropractic with the Chinese Olympic team when they shut down Wuhan, and I was locked up with them until June of last year. The stress was evident not just from the calamity in Wuhan but the stress of the lockdowns as well. It didn’t help that China was “blamed” for the Pandemic which doesn’t happen when Pandemics start in other places when a virus makes the jump to humans.
When balancing out public health vs Medical Freedom no Government can claim a flawless response to the pandemic. But you can’t blame that on the 1.4 Billion Chinese nationals, the millions of Chinese worldwide or the millions of others of Asian descent.

We’ve shown love the door along with God. No God = no love, right? Like you, this seems a bit simplistic like “love your neighbor,” but when we’re talking about the inspired Word of God there is power! When you and I look at the right answer, I think the devil comes around and whispers in our ears.
“Seriously, Jeff? People are being injured…even killed, and that’s all you’ve got?” Sniggers derisively.
But you have the answer right there. Everyone needs to love their neighbors and the only way to really teach that is with Biblical truths. I can think of ways to present logical reasons why abusing Asians is wrong, but they would certainly fall on the deaf ears of people who are behaving unreasonably in the first place. Pearls before swine.
Prayer, the means of FIRST resort! Pray with friends. Submit prayer requests to your mom’s group. Make prayer a traditional first activity when you meet with your group of friends. Hard to develop new habits – I still struggle with focused praying every day. But we keep trying.
You know I pray for you, but I’ve taken to praying for both you and your stud-muffin. I will add this concern to my prayers for him. I’ll end below with an Irish toast that came to mind while reading your article tonight. Just something for a smile. Imagine a nice Irish accent delivering this:
“May them that love us, love us. For them that don’t love us, may the good Lord teach ‘em to love us. And for them that won’t be taught…may the good Lord cripple ‘em so we know ‘em by their limpin’.”

Great to see this blog is going strong. It is often very good food for thought, I agree with your readers.
I remember the day last year, in the BLM upheaval, that groups of white haters tried to make a hashtag with a different message, then the BLM movement, trend on Twitter. The response from young Asians on that social count completely knocked the mean white guys off their heels.
Do you know the day I’m referring to? For many, I think it was a groan until it became clear the hashtag was getting appropriated.

I was personally disappointed at the rhetoric coming out of the past election there as it does impact the way people think and act. Having worked in Asia for thirty years and retaining the friendship of hundreds of people we worked and fellowshipped with in all those Asian countries I traveled and worked in I can say I learned much from those people who I love. Any violent or hurtful actions against innocent Asians affects me as a Caucasian the same as if it happened to my own family because they are my family and I have it on good authority from the Bible in confirming that. Racism is not supported by the Bible. I hope the current administration encourages respect for all citizens of that great country America.

I’m so sorry. I haven’t seen anything, but I don’t get out much, but I did see something on social media regarding the Kpop group BTS that is touring our country and it left me so unhappy. For the most part it has been good, but this one incident was hard to describe and by the expression on their faces, I’m not sure they knew how respond to it. A couple of them speak very good English, but the others, not. The thing is hostility can be understood whether you speak the language or not and that made me sad. I was ashamed for our country. This is a biggie with me…
First of all, I want to say that I 100% agree with every sentiment you have written in this post. But the way I’d like to participate here is by offering some food for thought, insofar as attempting to give insight into one of the big questions you posed, specifically:
“Where have we gone so wrong?”
I believe that a major chunk of the answer comes as a result of “litmus test” single-issue voting, instead of focusing on the entire candidate. In 1867, this statement was made:
“Politics is the art of the possible, the attainable — the art of the next best”
― Otto von Bismarck
I don’t care what the single issue is – take your pick: Gun rights, Liberal or Conservative justices, charter schools, climate change, whatever – when we focus on any one issue as our vote decision maker, we allow the possibility of a plethora of plagues to, well, plague us.
Because we are fixated solely on forestalling frogs, we turn a blind eye to blood, and pestilence walks in our door unchecked…
The blood of humans just like us, who might look different,
The 2020 version of Black Plague, and our failure to combat it.
Because we don’t insist that our leaders work together, to work in the realm of the possible, our society does not advance. Instead, it splinters.
And we tolerate it way too much because the leaders that divide us are pandering enough to give us our way on that one “thing.”
I note well that in the text of your post, and the comments (so far) do not name the author of the phrases: “China Virus” and “Wuhan Flu.” But we all know who it is.
We all know it was Donald the Divider

But hey, he gave us our way on tax cuts, or Supreme Court Justices, or Guns. The economy is booming, so what if we have tolerate a little instigating of racial strife, or contenance the disgrace of ripping immigrant children away from their families? Swallow your pride and don’t speak up. You’re getting what you want. If its good enough for “Little Marco” and “Lyin’ Ted.” what’s a little “China Virus” gonna do to you?
We don’t need to guess. We see what it has done.

I don’t claim to have THE answer. I robustly claim that we start by advocating that we demand better from our leaders, and, more importantly ourselves.

I feel your heart and passion. I am outraged at this injustice towards Asian Americans, too. Some of my friends are Filipino and are wonderful people. I, personally, believe in getting involved. Where would the African Americans as well as minorities be if Rev.Martin Luther King not taken a stand? Nazi Germany persecuted the Jewish people and the church stood by and did nothing. Let us not repeat the past and learn from history. Thank you for sharing.

Its always right to speak out about injustice because injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. This hate and racism and all other stuff going on in american can only be curbed by love for each other. Beyond our ethnicities we are all humans and we bleed the same blood.
God has called us to love one another and I feel even the church too should be involved in this to encourage love and forgiveness.

Always enjoy your posts. I am a little concerned you circle back again to a theme of BLM somehow is a causal factor in the anti-Asian bias. Maybe the New York City experiences of BLM are different so I cannot say one way or the other for you. Elsewhere BLM movement is not at all associated with other anti-Asian bias trends.
I have seen poverty driven violence in NYC back in the day (born 1957 then left NY in 1997) and it wasn’t a bias expression per se. The pandemic, chronic unemployment/poverty, low quality education and a life horizon of low expectations are far more a predictor of violence than following a Black Lives Matter idea.

That’s because it doesn’t fit their narrative, Caralyn. A lot of people here seem to want to put the blame for all this on President Trump, but this has been going on a lot longer than the last four years. It goes a lot deeper than simply blaming a bombastic political leader we don’t like. But I do agree, it’s not helpful to denigrate a whole group of people for a virus.
The thing is, this problem is systemic with people in general, which is why anti-racism is often as racist as racism itself. And the news channels, social media only make it worse for profit. They take advantage of the worst aspects of culture because division and getting angry at the “other side” keeps people engaged, watching, which sells more clicks, more advertising. Asian hatred doesn’t sell as well as white supremacy or Donald Trump or Coronavirus, etc. Sadly, it doesn’t get covered because of marketing. The “news” is feed to us, based on keeping an audience watching, not on whether it’s actually newsworthy. So, in some ways, we’re to blame for feeding on it.
We’ve also been getting increasingly polarized and divided because of the social media algorithms uses to keep us in our own echo chambers. A good documentary to watch on that is Netflix’s “The Social Dilemma,” by the way.
Some commenters also don’t like that you mentioned BLM possibly aggravating the situation, but you do have a point. I think you meant the BLM organization, and not the movement. The movement itself was good and necessary, but the BLM organization seems to have another agenda that goes beyond making black lives matter. Some of their leaders promote segregation and come against inter-racial marriages. This is just another form of Jim Crow.
Add to that, the popularity of Identity politics and Critical Race Theory (which is not the same thing as diversity training), which has made EVERYTHNG about race. While it was probably well intentioned, this is not helping us live together as a diverse culture, respecting and cherishing our differences as one people under God. It’s about pitting one group against another, mostly painting all white people (who are often mixed with other races themselves) as racist (which Asians often get lumped in with). Yes, there ARE white racists, but to make all white people so is actually promoting anti-white racism, it’s prejudiced, bigoted, and antithetical to Martin Luther King Jr., who said, let us judge a person by the content of their character rather than by the color of their skin. We DO need to understand one another better and stop the hate, in every situation. But we don’t do it by pitting one group against another, and making it all about race.
So, I don’t think this problem will go away with Biden in office. It may get even worse because of the other issues I mentioned. It just may not get reported if it doesn’t fit the narrative.

I agree, the politics-of-fear has been going on since… I visited my 90+ year old aunt in California a few years back. She was reminiscing by going through her photo albums. She showed me her elementary school class pictures from the late 1930’s into the 1940’s. In 1940, a large group of Japanese American children were evident. They were ALL gone in 1942. Of course, they were sent off to “Internment Camps” in the deserts of California and Nevada. These were concentration camps without killing them off. But, we confiscated their homes, property, possessions (though the official narrative – which you rightly suggest we should view cautiously as propaganda – says that we allowed them to sell their property… for pennies on the dollar) which they also did not get back. Apologies, reparations, etc. can only make up some much for lost opportunities, shame, and scapegoating. My aunt said that none of her classmates ever returned. How many generations will suffer for what we are doing to each other today? – Oscar

Hi Caralyn, sadly this is not the narrative that the media wants to push. Discrimination against Asians and Asian-Americans go all the way back to the 1880s. For a multitude of reasons, it has been overshadowed. I am glad you’re speaking out plus all that you do to remind us of God’s grace to us sinners. Keep up the good fight!

This is an interesting post. Mainly because I’ve read several articles in the past year about hate crimes against Asian-Americans. In fact, ex-President Trump was someone who repeatedly used the phrase “China flu” during press conferences, so much so that liberals were pissed.
I think this might be a case where you’re not in the liberal “echo chamber/bubble,” so you’re not seeing stuff about this as much. I know Fox News probably wouldn’t run headlines about hate crimes against Asians, but outlets like the New York Times or MSNBC will. I actually remember seeing a segment on Fox News they ran a couple of years ago (before the pandemic) where they made fun of people in Chinatown and played the “Kung-fu fighting” song in the background.
Either way, yeah, it’s terrible. But then again, xenophobia is nothing new in America. During WWII, we sent Japanese-Americans to internment camps. And there’s been anti-Asian prejudice in America going all the way back to the 19th century when Asians came to America to work on the railroads. It’s terrible stuff, but prejudice and racism are the American way for many.

Hi, Caralyn. I have often referred, even in some of my blogs last year, to the Wuhan Virus. The reasoning is the same for why we call Ebola by its river’s origin name. There are many named for animals or plants from which they are derived, a few for Japan, Naples, East Africa, Algeria, Uganda, Peru, Hubei and many other places in the world. There is even a Pacific Coast uukuvirus.
As for being racist against Chinese, my wife is Chinese born from HK. My “adoptive” little brother and his wife are both from mainland China.
Since such attention has been given to THIS virus’ name, I have taken to calling it the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) Virus due to the lack of transparency from the CCP regarding its beginnings and spread.
That said, no amount of information will “cure” the hatred in people’s hearts. These are people LOOKING for someone to blame, someone to hate. They are deceived and go on deceiving others, just like the soldiers at the foot of the cross were deceived about the “criminal” on the center cross.
And we know what His prayer for those deceived souls was: “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they are doing.”
And so I join you and Steven in prayer, “Father, protect these people who look Asian, but also the dark-skinned ones that some people look at suspiciously just because they have more melanin.
Father, teach us to pray as Jesus did on the cross, and forgive those who persecute us, so that they may be saved from Your day of judgment. And specifically, I pray for Steven, that you will bless him and protect his heart as well as his body from those who would hate him just because of his handsome face.
Father, forgive them because they don’t even understand that they are operating under the power of an evil master. Help them, O Lord, to see You and Your love for them. And if, in any way, I can show the love of Jesus to them, give me strength to do so.

Love is also not a feeling, but an act of will. Even though it is often very difficult to feel love for those carrying out these barbaric attacks, we can always, with God’s help, make an act of will that we will love them despite our anger and fear. Then we can pray for them as well as for their victims.

I was with you when you talked about the Asian hate. I lost you when you talked about BLM. Most BLM protests were peaceful marches. I think Asians need to hold protests of their own. Then, their voices will be heard. Protests will bring attention to the problem.

Racist attacks on old people of any race or creed make me so angry . How could anyone do that?!! It’s pure evil. I’m glad you wrote this because I didn’t know such things were happening. But sadly this is part of the larger problem of growing hate and violence and division in this country . The root cause is rejection of God. It’s not going to get better unless people admit their sin and repent and follow Jesus. He is the only mediator between God and man. These violent acts are proof that man is inherently evil, not good like the progress humanists claim. Our fleshly nature rebels against anything that we believe threatens our self interests. Love seeks the best for others but only God can give us that kind of love. As for China being blamed by Trump , I think that was irresponsible of him to use such a blanket term. Obviously he meant the Chinese government, not the citizens, especially those in America . But Biden is buddies with the Chinese government . Don’t expect things to improve as far as the treatment of Chinese citizens . Also, I think all of us Christians should expect growing persecution, such as in the comment above. We must continue to speak truth in love , be ever vigilant about our lives so that we give them no excuse to blame God, and pray for our enemies. May God be glorified in everything. These are the last days.

So I just did a little research and this has the smell of a propaganda campaign. My guess is that the Democrats want to to continue their push to turn the public against trump voters . They are trying to blame all kinds of things on white conservatives , especially Christians . Beware of jumping on that bandwagon. Biden is a puppet of the left . He wrote an executive order on this topic . The actual issue is the economy ,ruined by the unnecessary shutdowns that were politically motivated by the Democrats. I’m sorry I disagree
I wrote an article a few months ago where I differentiated between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Chinese people. I have been there five times. The people are wonderful. The presence of the party looms over every endeavor, with the thought of someone looking over your shoulder all the time. So, to hate Chinese Americans is ridiculous, but hate already drives beyond reason, thus anything is fair in that unfair world of hatred. I was spat upon and called a baby killer, because I wore a military uniform, in Mississippi, during the Vietnam War. Logic, common sense, it all goes away when you give in to that much hatred. Anyway, SlimJim wrote a comment on my old post to say that he appreciated my comments and his church, predominantly Chinese Americans in CA appreciated it too. If the CCP and the people of China are two different things. Chinese Americans are not even connected to either of those things, other than very distant cousins that never see one another.

Thank you for sharing this. While I do disagree with your BLM comment, I do wholeheartedly agree the level of animosity and hate in the US right now is shocking, scary and sad to see. Excellent post. We need to take a stand in this country that ALL LIVES MATTER. Lest we forget, the holocaust in Germany happened when people believed that some lives do not matter and that a particular ethnic/racial/religious minority should be blamed for the nation’s problems.

The other day, I saw a video that someone had posted on Facebook. The video showed a African American guy caught on CCTV arguing with two women and then he glances to the other side of the street and darts over and kicks an Asian woman off her scooter.
You watch these videos in disbelief because it just seems that these people (mostly elderly) are just going about their business and not bothering anyone. So why are they targeted?..
Just before the BLM riots started all across the U.S., a number of videos went online where Black people were literally harassing Asian people.. one person on the subway. A group of 4 were caught on CCTV attacking a teenage girl on her way home from school and they killed her. They kicked her to death, took something from her bag and ran off.
I am guessing that none of those guys were ever caught and prosecuted because not long after that, the George Floyd incident happened.
I went online and asked a simple question why no one bothered to consider those attacks on Asians as hate crimes as well. But apparently it is racist to suggest that black people can be racist. How about that?
After that I realized by comments were falling on deaf ears and even Asian people were upset at the term “All Lives Matter”. One Asian lady posted a video about stabbing the next person who said, “All Lives Matter”.
Is this what it has come to? Is this the world that we are living in?
We are not allowed to have rational discussions anymore about right and wrong, because right and wrong is now subjective. Palm, face.. WACK!!
If at all, I think that All people should take to the streets and shout “All Lives Matter”, “Stop Asian Hate”.. More voices need to be heard and the media should give it some attention.

I may be ignorant, but I don’t remember hearing about violence like this back in 1969 specifically aimed at Asian Americans or Chinese citizens when the flu that Year got dubbed “Hong Kong flu”. Then again, I was only 8 years old, and what I did remember hearing in the news was about Vietnam, and MLK and Bobby Kennedy’s assassinations. So the hatred has just increased instead of decreasing. So sad.
Interestingly, I remember my mother saying my grandpa had lost his sense of smell when he had that flu. He died in February of 1969 in a sort of freak accident. He had a wind shelter he had built and set on his tractor, and there was a hole in the tractor’s muffler, which allowed carbon monoxide to build up inside the shelter. Normally he would have smelled the fumes, or heard the extra loudness that comes from a bad muffler, but since he didn’t have his smell back and was bundled up extra warm against the cold, he died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
All that to say I do not remember hearing anyone blaming Hong Kong for his death or being angry with that population. Why have we become such a culture of blaming, hateful people?!

One of the reasons of hate crimes towards Asian Americans is probably due to former president Trump who agressively marked covid as „china virus“ and told multiple times that China has to pay for the damages of the virus across the globe. Sad.
