Wonderful Wisconsin!

OK, so I hate to be that girl that puts someone or something “on blast,” but American Airlines — not only was Monday’s post about our hellish escapade to get here thanks to them….(a 6 hour delay, 2 missed connections, terrible customer service (except for Todd!), and overall just a negative experience.) BUT, then YESTERDAY for our flight home…THE SAME THING HAPPENED!!!

Thankfully, we hadn’t left for the airport yet, but we got a notification that our return flight was AGAIN, delayed for two hours, causing us to AGAIN miss our connection and AGAIN have to rebook our flight. Only this time, it was the last flight out, and the only available flights were the next day. (aka this afternoon.)

SOOOO, we’re still in Wisconsin, on borrowed time, until we fly out this afternoon.

But I’ll tell you what, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my short years around the sun, it’s not to sweat the small stuff. Sure, it’s inconvenient, but in the grand scheme of things, we’re getting an extra half-day of vacation, we’re safe, we’re blessed to have the ability to work from up here, and at the end of the day, it must have been part of God’s plan.

However…just because I’m “rolling with it” doesn’t mean I can’t learn something from it….which is a) never to book the last flight out again, and b) never fly American Airlines again.

But anywho – we’ve had an absolutely incredible time up here…no surprise!

We’ve had some absolutely glorious days on the water,

we went tubing and had a bit of a wild and bouncy ride!

Steven and I did a lot of exploring on our bikes – We stumbled upon the local watering hole and had an afternoon cocktail.

And we even found ourselves at an archery range, and shot archery! (My fingers are still numb!)

We went out for some delicious dinners.

Made a roaring bonfire.

Had a cornhole tournament!

Binge watched “Yellowstone” as an entire family (after the kids were in bed) — and wow what a gripping show.

But the best part was just being all together.

That’s what vacation is all about. And that’s what I’m so grateful for, and grateful that Steven was here to be a part of it.

I am getting on the airplane tonight (hopefully, God willing!!) feeling incredibly loved, blessed and overflowing with joy.

God is good.

I hope your holiday weekend was just as wonderful!

See ya back in NYC! It’s time for wheels up!

  1. Wow, I’m sorry that your flights have been such a mess, Caralyn! I remember flying in the 70s, I don’t think it was like this. I love the photos, and you two make a cute couple too! Safe travels. 🙏🏻☺️

  2. As an adopted son of Wisconsin, I could not agree with you more on the beauty of Lake Life in Wisconsin. On our friends at American Airlines. We eventually cancelled a trip to the Bay area of CA last December due to the head spinning number of flight and leg changes they did…without warning… It is maddening. Enjoy your unexpected extended stay. You all look like you’re having a blast!

    • oh my gosh lake life is the best life, hands down! 🙂 oh my gosh that’s such a shame, I’m sorry to hear that. yeah, i think that will be the last time we fly with American. Maddening is a kind way to put it!! thanks for stopping by! Hugs and love xox

  3. “The art of contentment is to be able to enjoy the scenery on a detour.” me 😉

    • oh wow i LOVE THAT!! that deserves to be on a wall somewhere! 😉 Hugs and love xox

  4. I learned years ago that American has the worst record of domestic carriers for delays and cancellations. I only take AA when there’s no other option. Still, I’m glad you had such a glorious week with family and Steven! I trust at this time (06:30) you’re in the air and en route to NYC. Safe travels! Have a nice weekend of recovering from your adventures!

    • Oh my gosh, Jeff – you’re not kidding! and the LINES at the airport to speak to customer service at American….no exageration….at least 75 people deep! WILD. Thank you – yeah it was a really really incredible week. My whole family loves spending time with him too – especially my little nieces! they think he’s the coolest guy ever! haha 🙂 Let’s chat this week about September! Hope your week is off to a great start! hugs to you and your girls xox

  5. Every time I fly, which isn’t too often, I say “Never again!” So many times, sitting in airports, I’ve felt like a fish in a barrel. The airlines make almost all the rules. And good customer service isn’t a top priority with most of them.

Anyway, I’m glad you had a great time in Wisconsin and got to bring your special gentleman. I remember when you were waiting for such a guy to come along. Congrats, and God Bless.

  6. No….we’re flying American in September. No refunds here either. From Washington to Arizona. Short flight! Now I am going to pray for God to totally intervene 😀😅

    • thanks Deborah! you’re right about that, gotta just roll with it, and smile your way through! Hugs and love xox

  7. My wife had a recent unscheduled overnight in Dallas (on the way to San Francisco) for much the same reason. God did take care of her by way of family in the area. We learned after a few flights back and forth that of all the airlines out there we got the best planes and non stop flights via Alaska Air.(To Florida- go figure) Glad to hear you trusting God through it all.

  8. I’m sorry that your flight was delayed but, as a person who once traveled for a living and “commuted” to the airport almost as often as I went to the office, your experience today is miles better than it would have been only a few years ago. Before the world of (smart) cellphones in everyone’s pocket loaded with apps, you would have been at the airport before you found out about any delays. Airlines had (and likely still have) policies of what do do when you get stuck, including when they have to pay for an overnight hotel. More than once I spent six or eight hours sitting and waiting (sometimes on concrete floors). I know today doesn’t look like a blessing, and I know hearing this from me won’t help, but “it could have been worse” and, until recently, it would have been. I’m glad that you’re looking for the silver linings and for the good things even in the bad,so I hope you don’t mind me, reminding you, of how things were in the “dark ages” twenty years ago. 🙂

  9. It looks like you two enjoyed a fabulous time! Even with the airline troubles, I am sure you two found blessings in that too! Safe travels home, and God bless. 🙂

    • thanks Eleanor! oh my gosh we had a marvelous time! i can’t wait to go back! Hugs and love xox

  10. What the MSM and the airlines are not telling the public is: the pilots who were ‘jabbed’ ‘it’s not a vaccine’ are dropping like flies due to illness from the shot or in some unfortunate cases, dying- and there aren’t enough pilots to meet the travel demands.

  11. I’ve flown for YEARS- American, United, and Southwest- and never had this many problems until recently. I think they’re all are on the struggle bus right now. United lost our luggage (or should i say misplaced) when we went to Texas last week. We had several delays going from Houston to Dallas, so somehow how luggage didn’t make it in the plane. Thankfully, they delivered it to us later the next day. Our flight home also had several delays. They loaded the luggage on our plane, then unloaded it because something was wrong with the plane. There’s so many more things I could share that went wrong, but I won’t go into those details here. It’s frustrating, but I think it’s going to be this way for a little while! Thankful to travel again and see my family. That’s the light at the end of the tunnel!

  12. We have the bean bag game but I never knew it was called “cornhole.” Waterside family time is the best. I miss roasted marshmallows. 😊 (I’ve heard few positive AA stories)

  13. LOL SURE you’re all about Wisconsin NOW. It’s July!

But try it in February when it is -25 degrees outside, and of you throw a cup of boiling water in the air, it freezes before hitting the ground. Then tell me you still love it……. 😉

    • Oh my gosh – YIKES! That is wild! Yeah, we have spent a few days over Thanksgiving and Christmas, and boy does it get COLD! Snow-mobiling on the frozen over lake, ice skating on the river — doesn’t get much better than that! Hugs and love xox

  14. I hope you made it home safely. My husband would agree with you about flying American! We laugh about using the lines from Pretty Women. American made a big mistake with one of our trips- Big – Huge! Ken and I have flown dozens, Ken probably hundreds, of times since then, all over the world, but never on American!

On another note, if you liked Yellowstone, your next show should be Longmire. It’s even better!

    • thank you Amy! Thankfully, we did! the only hiccup on the way home was they confiscated this beautiful, (and expensive) candle I got for Steven as a thank you gift for coming that said “Lake House” on it, for his apartment. It set off their alarm on the xray machine, so I had to leave it at the airport. 🙁 I did end up finding it online though, and was able to order another one. Yeah, I think I will be taking a page from your and husband’s book — no more American!! oh really?! I will have to check out Longmire — thanks for the recco! We’re only on episode 5, but we’re hooked! We’ve promised eachother not to watch unless we’re together, and gosh — that is an exercise in self control! hahah thanks for stopping by! i hope you had a great weekend! Hugs and love xox

  15. Looks like a super cool vacation despite travel horrors both ways. Believe me I know all about travel hiccoughs after most of my business years on an airplane and missed flights to throw my itineraries into the depths of despair and test my Christian patience. 🙂

    • thank you so much Ian! Oh my gosh, it was the best time. Definitely a bit of a travel nightmare, but so worth it!! oh yikes! haha Hugs and love xox
