The Story Behind Our Engagement

I’ve gotta say, I never thought karaoke could be so meaningful until just this past weekend.

If you follow me on Instagram, then you know that earlier in the week, I shared this video, which I will post below.

And I wanted to share the full story with you on here.

This weekend was Steven’s late father’s birthday, and his family threw had a family get together to celebrate his life. It was incredibly beautiful and special to be all together.

Rewind for a moment to when Steven and I got engaged.

Why is it that #God always uses *music* to speak to the soul? There's a reason why our #marriage #proposal was so meaningful...one that came full circle last weekend. #music #catholic #christianity #bible #prayer #engaged #engagement

You may remember watching the video that’s at the beginning of this clip, where I was completely taken by surprise.

Why is it that #God always uses *music* to speak to the soul? There's a reason why our #marriage #proposal was so meaningful...one that came full circle last weekend. #music #catholic #christianity #bible #prayer #engaged #engagement

But there’s a back story behind that video. If you listen very closely, there’s a Filipino song playing in the background called, “Ikaw at Ako” — which is a beautiful love song that means, “You and Me.”

I’ll paste the lyrics at the end in english so you can read them.

But through out Steven’s father’s battle with cancer, singing karaoke would be one thing we would do. We’d position the speaker so that he could hear it from his room. And during that time, I learned how to sing that song in Tagalog, the language they speak in the Philippines.

And that song became kind of a sound of hope for us, as we walked that journey with him.

And so, when Steven proposed with that song in the background, it made it all the more special, as Steven’s father was there, witnessing the proposal.

Why is it that #God always uses *music* to speak to the soul? There's a reason why our #marriage #proposal was so meaningful...one that came full circle last weekend. #music #catholic #christianity #bible #prayer #engaged #engagement

It was such a beautiful moment, and now you can understand the overwhelming amount of tears in the video.

Well, fast forward to the present moment, and at his Heavenly birthday party, we all whipped out the karaoke machine again, I was able to sing that song again for him, with his brother singing the male part of the song.

I will always cherish that song, and remember him when I hear it, and Steven and I are trying to think of a way to incorporate it into our wedding next June.

But anyways, I wanted to just share that with you.

I think it’s amazing how the Holy Spirit can move through music — it really is a powerful thing. Afterall, God is the creator of all things beautiful – and music sure is one of those beautiful things that reflects the Maker.

And as mentioned, here are the lyrics to the song.

You And I

They say that someday, what you’re wishing for will come
And when it came, I couldn’t hide my prayers.
The hope that I find in your eyes
And the fear of the thought that you’ll disappear
And now, you’re here
I can’t explain what I feel
I’m ready for forever
I won’t lead you on
I won’t hurt you
From then
Until now
You and I

And finally I’ve found What I’ve been wishing for
I promise you, I’ll put you first
And I won’t deny
The fate I’ve found In your love
Is what will cause this love Of ours to last
And now, you’re there
I can’t explain what I feel
I’m ready for forever
I won’t lead you on
I won’t hurt you
From then (from then)
Until now
You and I
And now, it’s here
I will always hold Your hands
You won’t be alone anymore
For better or for worse
I will love you
From then
Until now
From now
Until the end
You and Me

  1. An old love song

    Air and Angels
    BY JOHN DONNE
    Twice or thrice had I lov’d thee,
    Before I knew thy face or name;
    So in a voice, so in a shapeless flame
    Angels affect us oft, and worshipp’d be;
    Still when, to where thou wert, I came,
    Some lovely glorious nothing I did see.
    But since my soul, whose child love is,
    Takes limbs of flesh, and else could nothing do,
    More subtle than the parent is
    Love must not be, but take a body too;
    And therefore what thou wert, and who,
    I bid Love ask, and now
    That it assume thy body, I allow,
    And fix itself in thy lip, eye, and brow.

    Whilst thus to ballast love I thought,
    And so more steadily to have gone,
    With wares which would sink admiration,
    I saw I had love’s pinnace overfraught;
    Ev’ry thy hair for love to work upon
    Is much too much, some fitter must be sought;
    For, nor in nothing, nor in things
    Extreme, and scatt’ring bright, can love inhere;
    Then, as an angel, face, and wings
    Of air, not pure as it, yet pure, doth wear,
    So thy love may be my love’s sphere;
    Just such disparity
    As is ‘twixt air and angels’ purity,
    ‘Twixt women’s love, and men’s, will ever be.

  2. So beautiful Caralyn! So special and meaningful. It reminds me when my mom was bedridden with dementia earlier this year (she passed away 8/1/22), she sang a song to me, Open My Eyes Lord…. Help me to see your face, open my ears Lord, help me to hear your voice…. We chose that song to play at her funeral Mass. So beautiful❤️

  3. Wow…it’s amazing how small things in life, can mean so much, and make you feel like you’ve got all the world’s happiness…
    Congratulations
    Love,
    Aadya

  4. It could be the song for your first dance. We love, enjoy, and are honored to have you share these precious and awesome moments with us. Hugs and Love 🤗 & ❤️!

  5. I’ve enjoyed the music on my many trips to the Philippines and living there for a while. The people are very musical by nature. Unfortunately I almost cracked my ankle trying to negotiate the bamboo stick dance. LOL
