Recovery-Positive Resolutions

Ah, New Years.

The holidays are behind us, seemingly endless possibilities await us in the coming year, and everybody and their brother seems to have one thing on their mind: weight loss.

I swear, come December 26, you can’t turn on the TV, listen to the radio or surf the web without being bombarded by gym membership commercials, or weight loss program advertisements, all subtly shaming you into feeling the need to “tone up.”

And let me tell you, as someone who battled anorexia in her past, this specific “weight-loss January” craze is just downright toxic. And annoying. Because it’s inescapable, and for those just starting out their recovery…it can be triggering as all get out.

Same with New Year’s resolutions. It seems that they always revolve about “getting in shape” or “eating healthier” or even…”dry January.”

So. I thought that I would offer some recovery-positive resolutions that have NOTHING to do with weight or food or body image or fitness.

So — without further ado…

  1. Spend less time on my phone, and more time being present with the people I love.
  2. Choose to “say no” to things I don’t want to do…and not feel guilty about it.
  3. Donate at least 3 articles of clothing per month that I no longer wear.
  4. Call one friend I haven’t talked to in a while every Sunday afternoon.
  5. Spend at least five minutes outside every day being in God’s beautiful creation.
  6. Begin everyday with a prayer – even just a short moment thanking God for the day.
  7. Go to bed before 11:30 – which means I have to manage my time during the day to not leave things until bedtime.
  8. Speak kindly to myself and consciously remember that my reflection is the reflection of the Father.
  9. Find at least one random act of kindness to do for someone every day.
  10. Be intentional with the media I consume—from music, to movies and shows, and make sure they align with my values and are filling my mind with good things.

So there you have some of mine.

What are your New Year’s resolutions?

  1. That’s lots of positivity, Caralyn! I stopped the resolution thing long ago since it never worked. Great photo of you, and Happy New Year!

  2. The last time I made a New Year’s Resolution was in 1969, my last year of high school. And I am pleased to report that I have NEVER once broken it:
RESOVLED, I will NEVER make another New Year’s Resolution. 😄
That said, the New Year DOES provide an opportune time for evaluating whether one has reached or failed to reach any goals, which is basically what I see YOUR resolutions are. Less mandates and regulations, but more “How can I be more of what I should be in the coming year?”
This January I will begin working with a professor at a nearby university to recruit some students to arrange, mix and perform a handful of songs I have written over the years. Large hopes for good quality YouTube videos because, “”Many people die with their music still in them” (Oliver Wendall Holmes), and I don’t want to be one of those.
    ❤️&🙏, c.a.

  3. Oh I love the idea of the Sunday phone calls! I sometimes do that by accident but I just might try it more often. As for resolutions that list looks great. I would be willing to bet that God also has a list for each of us and I resolve to find it one day at a time!

  4. I love these resolutions, Caralyn. I can tell you that as I’ve grown older that going to bed before 1130 part kinda takes care of itself 😂. I pray for blessings for you and your family this new year. Here’s to a Happy and Healthy 2023!

  5. Those are terrific ideas for your resolutions. My 2023 ideas include some of your same thoughts – especially the idea of being present, in the moment, truly WITH the people I’m with – and READY for all God’s unexpected blessings. God bless you & Steven and your new setting, your new life together. Happy new year, Caralyn.

  6. Caralyn, these are great resolutions! I like that they are non-food ones, too! For the last 3 years, I used to participate in the Daniel Fast for 21 days in January, but a few months ago I was diagnosed with an eating disorder. My dietitian says I can’t do the fast this year, for obvious reasons. So, these are good suggestions! Also, I’m curious to learn a bit more about how you were able to recover… or even tips for recovery…? My ED is related to depression, but has continued to worsen over the last month or so. Would just love your perspective and input!

  7. Some great resolutions, my favourite being.

Donate at least 3 articles of clothing per month that I no longer wear.
Spend at least five minutes outside every day being in God’s beautiful creation.
Go to bed before 11:30 – which means I have to manage my time during the day to not leave things until bedtime. 🙂

  8. Good post. Thank you for reminding me to…Speak kindly to myself and consciously remember that my reflection is the reflection of the Father.
