There’s something really beautiful about humility.
I’ve been kind of on a pop culture “fast” recently. Not by choice…
Ever since my mom had her stroke over Christmas, we literally haven’t turned on the TV. Which is crazy, considering how glued I was to the news during the election.
But for whatever reason, tonight my parents and I decided to watch the Grammy’s.
And that may or may not have been because I thought the Biebs was performing 🙂
But I digress.
Going into the night, I had obviously heard about Beyoncé‘s attention-grabbing nude pregnancy photo shoot, but to be honest, I have so many (more important) things to occupy my time right now.
But her Grammy’s performance…..daaaaaang.
I honestly had to take a moment to collect myself afterwards.
And not because I was so moved by her “brilliance.”
I needed to just get away from the sheer glorification of self we collectively had to witness.
Now, let me begin by saying this: I have nothing against the Queen Bey. I love her music. But I’ve always said, “I don’t worship at her altar.” – Kind of half-kidding.
But tonight….that was actually literally accurate, as Beyoncé was adorned and bedecked in a full on personification of a cross between a Hindu goddess and the blessed Virgin Mary, complete with a golden, saintly crown (that was eerily similar to a monstrance.)
My dad watched 30 seconds and said, “This is making a mockery of religion,” as he got up and left the room.
But that’s for another post. I’m not even going to go into that tonight.
What irked me about the performance was that she chose to portray herself as a literal deity.
Since being home with my mom, I’ve been spending, literally, every waking hour with her – from 6am until I pass out at 11pm. (That is, unless I’m up until 1am writing a post!)
But I’ve been my mom’s “wingwoman” – attending all of her bible studies and book clubs and social gatherings with her.
And Friday morning, we were at book club, and the book was The Hidden Power of Kindness.
And uncannily, the chapter they were on was on caring for the sick.
I kid you. Frickin. Not.
But there was a powerful line in the book that said, “Sickness makes people more humble.”
Beyoncé’s performance tonight, it was all about motherhood, as she just announced last week that she was expecting twins.
So this performance was a celebration of womanhood and specifically, motherhood – and elevating herself to goddess-status because of her pregnancy state.
But I’m here to tell you – what I’ve learned from my own mother in this season helping her recover from her stroke, is that the most powerful “glorification of motherhood” is when she is the most meek and humble.
In fact, the best exemplification and celebration of mothers would never be the glorification and deification of self, but rather, humbling oneself and serving and loving others.
Seeing my mom, in this vulnerable state, she has never been more beautiful to me. Ever.
All her life, she has never asked to be “adored” or “worshiped” because of her status as “mother.” In fact, just the opposite. She has always sought to give of herself to others. And even now, when she can’t really do that at the moment, that humility makes her all the more beautiful and lovable.
There was just such a stark contrast between seeing Beyoncé, adorned in a golden halo crown and dressed as a deity, glorifying herself because she’s a mother and a woman; and then looking over at my beautiful mother, fighting for her life to regain her memory and her speech after her stroke. That woman, is worthy of all the praise in the world, and yet would never ask for it, nor covet it.
I’m not bashing Beyoncé. Truly, I’m not. She’s talented and I’m sure, a terrific mother to Blue, and the babies in her belly. This is not meant to be a judgment on that. It is merely an observation.
Looking at my mother tonight, on the couch, concentrating on absorbing the sights and sounds coming at her from the TV, – she was absolutely radiant, giving Beyoncé a run for her money.
There’s something really beautiful about humility.

This is really interesting to me because I heard that Adele was super humble (but I can’t confirm because I didn’t watch.) I think everyone reacts to fame differently. I’m sorry that you (?) felt offended by what she wore. It’s a little sad how mainstream it’s become to bash on religion. I’m just like let people believe in what they believe! If they want to worship a rock, let them! If they want to worship God, let them! (I don’t want to be THAT person but you spelled deity wrong.)
At any rate, I wish you and your family the best during your mum’s recovery. Godspeed to her.
Thanks for this! You’re right, everyone responds to fame different. Yeah, Adele was really humble. I wasn’t really offended, just more taken aback and like…”wow.” Yeah, I definitely don’t expect pop culture to respect or have anything to do with religion, but this was just a little extreme. Oh oops! haha I’ll go in and spellcheck! haha that’s my 1am brain for ya 🙂 thanks so much, my beautiful friend! I always love hearing your thoughts!! 🙂 hugs xox
You’re welcome! Yeah that makes sense. 🙂
🙂 🙂 🙂 xoxo 🙂 🙂 🙂
Thank you for this post!! I couldn’t agree more! I was actually sickened by that performance. God bless you and your mother. She is lucky to have you!!
You’re so welcome! thank YOU for taking the time to read! i appreciate your prayers and kindness 🙂 hugs xox
when you said about your mom, “She has always sought to give of herself to others” your mom did it the right way 🙂
Thank you so much 🙂 Yeah, my mom is a pretty incredible woman. I am very blessed to have her in my life. big hugs xox
Great thing is, you know she feels the same way about you 🙂 God Bless you 🙂
I don’t know about that…I can only hope 🙂 hugs xx
Beautifully put – I have been trying to put words to my thoughts about the pictures I have seen (I didn’t watch the Grammy’s). I am not one to take offense to a lot of things, and I love culturally ethnic art. However, I agree with your dad, and I was so disappointed to see the embrace of ethnicity take a turn toward deification.
And, I did NOT think about the Monstrance on her head until I saw a meme floating around about it today (something about Jesus wearing it better).
Finally, such a beautiful reminder that motherhood is most beautiful when it is raw, humble, and real. Thank you for that reminder!
Thanks so much Anne. I really appreciate your encouraging words. You’re right, we had a bit of an icky feeling watching it. Yeah, it’s kinda crazy when you think about the symbolism. thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
Nice post!!
Thanks so much! glad you stopped by! hugs xo
Excellent article with many poignant observations and packed full of truth, especially regarding the supreme virtue of humility!
Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it:) a supreme virtue indeed. Hugs and love xox
I can’t remember the last time I watched any of these award shows. It’s one thing to like an artist’s music and another thing entirely to worship celebrities with a devotion best reserved for God.
Not that all of these artists expect this, but being only human, when you pay that much attention to a person, it’s not only possible, but highly likely they will start eating it up with a spoon and then expecting it.
As I’ve gotten older, I have less and less respect for that sort of human being. Maintaining the ability to express humility must be a tremendous effort for anyone in that position, so my hat’s off to those who do. For those who don’t, I don’t care how much money they make. Neither does God.
Thanks so much James. You’re right, people can take it too far and worship these celebs. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You’re right – humility is a pretty incredible virtue. hugs xox
I wasn’t as offended by the Beyonce performance, but I rarely look to entertainers for moral insight or guidance (didn’t quite understand the sexualized imagery on Beyonce’s Instagram?) but your mother would seem to represent the true power of a person whose legacy has clearly impacted your very being, I am humbled by that. Thank you for sharing such profound truth.
That’s true, Tyrone. Yeah, my mom is a pretty incredible woman and I so look up to her wisdom and guidance. thanks for stopping by and sharing your perspective! hugs xox
” The hidden power of kindness ” ….when I read this line, I think of you! Thank you for sharing this part of your journey….we can’t know why now, but we can trust God has you there not only for an immediate purpose of daily care and companionship but for a foundation of something later in your life! It might be years before God reveals this to you and when he does you will have another chapter of your testimony. This one will be powerful and touch many hearts! I am so proud of you and would like to thank you for being an inspiration and in my life!
Aw, Rick, what a kind thing to say! I am seriously so touched by this. I am so grateful that our paths crossed and that I can call you a friend 🙂 hope you’re having a great week so far! hugs xox
No better words could have been spoken. I was so shocked to see those women “on the ground at Beyonce’s feet like she was the virgin mary or a deity of some religion to be worshipped. It almost brought to mind the woman in Revelations that was giving birth. The great harlot. That was all I could think in the back of my mind. I hate to think that but that was all I could think as I watched her draw all that attention to herself as she cradled her stomach as if she were the ONLY woman in the world to EVER carry twins. It is a sad state of our country when girls look up to idols not God. Thank you for this moving post. God bless you for caring for your mom. It is not easy I bet, but you are doing what a daughter should, and God will place jewels in your crown for it. I bet your mom is grateful and feels more comfort with you helping her and is at more peace at home. She is blessed to have you!! I will keep you all in my prayers. 🙂 God bless you!
Thank you so much Tina. Yeah, it was pretty outrageous. We looked at each other and were like, is this really happening?! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I’m glad this resonated with you. My mom is pretty awesome. thanks for your prayers. means a lot! hugs xox
As usual, your posts captivate me 🙂 I didn’t watch the Grammy’s. As a matter of fact, we don’t watch television at all, ever, lol. Just out choice.
At any rate, first of all the “thing” that woman was wearing reminded me of the Starbucks woman/brand or whatever it is (which is supposedly suppose to be a fertility goddess of something related to the sun – you see how much I know lol) which came off as a passive political statement. Secondly, if I were pregnant I would DARE NOT act like that. It was a shame, and again, I only saw pictures, but it seems you hit the nail on the head. What is this world coming to?!
On an ending note, I just want to let you know that your family is in my prayers. Your mother, that her recovery be speedy and complete and for you, that you are blessed beyond measure in your devotion to her, as I’m sure you will be <3
aw, thank you so much! gosh, what a kind thing to say. How powerful that you are TV free! I wish I could do that 🙂 haha Yeah, I’m with you – that was brave to bare a pregnant belly – of twins no less! – on national television. Thanks for your prayers. it really means a lot. hugs to you xox
Hi Caralyn…you are way more gracious than I am. I cannot stand what I consider nauseating self-glorification of celebrities. As I read your blog, the words of Jesus to the Pharisees came to mind immediately, “He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.” (Luke 16:15). The last statement is a zinger…the value systems of the world often run crosshairs with God’s heart. I believe the beauty that you saw in your mother is the same beauty the Christ is drawn towards. Humility is beautiful in the eyes of God…I believe He was giving you a view through His lens. “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” (James 4:6). I am not anti-entertainment or celebrity, far from it, but I believe the self-aggrandizement of this age borders on idolatry. I love the promise of Jesus as He reveals His heart…“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” The Lord Himself is humble and He loves the humble heart! Okay…I’m done…sorry for the rant…ya got me going there sister!
Tom
Hi Tom, thank you so much for sharing these quotes. It is really powerful to read and juxtapose them to the world we live in. A real thought provoker in your words. Hugs to you xox
Rocking it again! I agree. -Laura (aka Harper Granville)
Aw, thanks Laura! 🙂 So glad you like this! hugs xox
I think you did a beautiful job of expressing yourself, and your feelings without bashing anyone. Of course Beyoncé is an entertainer, and she really knows how to give us something to watch and talk about. I would like to think her performance was done strictly in that spirit.
Regardless, it’s a wonderful gift you have, the ability to see the true and real and raw and sometimes painful beauty God shares with us in so many different ways every day. God bless you and your family.
Thank you so much 🙂 I’m so glad this resonated with you. I would like to think that as well 🙂 gosh, what a kind thing to say. thank you for that. hugs xox
I agree with your dad. I couldn’t watch. As I don’t know her intentions, I’ll give the benefit of the doubt. I’m guessing she was trying to portray empowerment to all women. Her performance fell short and didn’t remotely come off that way.
Thanks J-Dub, yeah I’m sure the empowerment card was in there somewhere. but I agree — it just felt icky. she’s uber talented, but you’re right this fell short. hugs xox
I pray that Beyonce’ and scores of other “stars” and “celebrities” learn humility. The powerful experience of the 12 Steps helped me. Also the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Praying the Rosary teaches me the power of losing my self in devotion to the Blessed Mother. I love your posts. Prayers and a hug to your Mother and your Dad!
Thanks David! I really appreciate your prayers. Yeah, there’s something about losing yourself in prayer that can move mountains. thanks again for your kindness. hugs xox
I had a similar reaction to her performance. It was puzzling to me. I completely did not get it. And what I really don’t get is that sometimes her music alludes to infidelity on the part of her husband. I heard it in the song last night too (in my perspective). She was talking about being split open in a painful way. Child rearing can do that, so I don’t know. Call me puzzled. I hope one day my son has an ounce of the love that you do for your mom.
Hey there! Gosh, that’s so kind of you to say. thank you so much. Yeah, I heard that lyric too, last night, about Jay-Z. I’m puzzled too. Thanks for stopping by! hope you have a great night! hugs xox
Your father’s discernment is on point!
It usually is. 🙂 haha jk jk…but seriously 😉 Thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
Her performance leads me to think of a quote that I love, “arrogance and fear, they will keep you from learning the simplest thing, it’s not about you.” I think that many, especially celebrities and those in the spotlight are praised by so many that it goes to their heads and humble goes out the window. Kanye West jumped on stage and embarrassed Taylor Swift to say Beyonce should have won, and Adele turned down her well deserved award because she felt that Beyonce should gave gotten album of the year. I don’t recall Beyonce ever giving up her spot and putting any other celebrity on the high pedestal that they put her on. Her performance really creeped me out and I felt like she considered herself worthy of worship. No Ma’am!! I do not worship man.
Oh wow, what a powerful quote. I’ve never heard that before but it’s so true – arrogance and fear … has destroyed many lives. Thanks for your thoughtful response. Amen to that! No Ma’am indeed! Hope you’re having a great night! hugs xox
There is nothing more attractive than seeing someone being humble. It’s a practiced characteristic that makes one put others first. Something you’re really good at! Keep up the good work! Always praying for you and your family!
~Tom
Hey Tom! So true – it is truly beautiful in every sense of the word. Thanks for your continued prayers. You are an incredible friend and I’m grateful for you. hugs xox
You’re most welcome 🙂 hope to hear from you 🙂 God has surely blessed me with your friendship. Shoot me a message sometime!
🙂 *you got it, dude* …with a thumbs up, Michelle Tanner style 🙂 hehe
Haha
😎
🤓🙈
Oh man. I had very similar thoughts. Thank you for sharing your insights!
Thanks Andrew! Glad I wasn’t alone in that thinking! Hope you have a great week! hugs xox
Sing it, sweeheart. You’re still doing exactly what you are meant to be doing… revealing God truth right where you stand.
Humility is a virtue/gift much more precious than fame or success because, without humility, one has a difficult time being aware of God.
Oh gosh, what a kind thing to say. Thank you so much 🙂 Yes it is! We need to remember Who is really the “Top Dog.” hah Hope you’re having a great night. hugs xox
What more could we expect from the children of Eve? [Insert melancholic you-know-you’re-right-but-it-really-sucks smile here] The saddest part of Eve’s story was she was already made in Father’s image, she was already just like her Papa, and it wasn’t her downfall to want to be like him but she got tricked into believing she had to do more. And it hasn’t stopped.
Thank-you for your insight Caralyn, as always (: You are very discerning and while it’s not easy to see your world for what it is, it is a valuable gift [=
Thanks Carson. That’s so true – she was already in His image. That’s a powerful thought. Yeah, we definitely are the product of a fallen world. That’s why community is so important to navigate through it with. Hope you’re having a great week so far. Hugs xox
I so needed to read this tonight – thank you!!
Hey Muffy! Oh good! So glad it hit home with you. Hugs and love xox
This moved me. Not because of the Beyoncé stuff perse but rather the light you shown on your mother. As a mother myself I can only pray that my children would see me in the same way you see your mom (and only if I’m worthy… I hope I am). That I have enough humility in my service to them in this life. Once again I find myself wondering if I’m saying it right what exactly it is that I mean–this one’s hard to express I think. I know you don’t want to be held to a standard of nobility for the care you are giving your mom right now, but I think kind of the point is that you having the emotional capacity to do with grace and strength brightens your moms aura even more- she raised you. She brought all of the beauty in your bones out from within, nurturing –so you shine bringer too in part Because of her influence in your life. Gifts to each other you are. Special hearts with special gifts to give because it is natural to do it. God bless you both for looking up to Him in faith for strength. ❤️
Thank you so much. Yeah my mother is pretty incredible. I am very blessed to have her in my life. And gosh – no no, I’m just doing what needs to be done. I definitely think our hearts are connected in a special way though:) thanks so much for stopping by. Hugs and love xox
Thank you for your honest appraisal of a pop culture moment and the generosity of spirit that comes through in caring for your mother. Blessings to you and your parents.
Thanks so much Mel An. I really appreciate it. Hugs and love xox
Great post and a perspective shared. Thanks for sharing. Keep writing. All the best to your family
Thank you so much 🙂 I appreciate your kind words for my family. Hope you have a great night. hugs xox
So beautifully written. I didn’t watch the Grammy’s, but I’m so glad that you’re seeing the beauty in your Mother. Sounds like you’re doing much better. Thank you so much for your kind words yesterday. They meant a lot. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks so much Gerri! Yeah, my mom is a pretty special lady. I am incredibly blessed to have her as a mom and best friend. Hope you’re having a good day 🙂 hugs to you xox
Brilliant post Carolyn!
Thanks so much Johnathan! Glad you enjoyed it! hugs xox
You are a testament to the woman your mother is. What an amazing relationship.
Oh my gosh, I am so touched by that. What a kind thing to say. Thank you Amy. So much. Hugs to you xox
“Something beautiful about humility”. May I remember those words! What a great post.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it. yeah me too!! i need to remember that ever morning when I wake up 🙂 have a great monday! hugs xox
A thought provoking essay, as always!
I liked Beyonce’s performance. I didn’t find it religiously offensive, and I enjoyed the way she played with feminine, pregnant ideas of the Divine. (And, for what it’s worth, my first thought was of Isis, not the Virgin Mary or Durga or Lakshmi, etc.–though I assume she borrowed from lots of different traditions.).
Also, I don’t think Beyonce’s performance took anything away from your mother. Reading this, I feel as if you felt she somehow insulted the kindness, patience and heroism of women like your mom. I didn’t get that vibe at all. To me, Beyonce just put on a dazzling, body-positive show. A show that in no way negated quieter expressions of motherhood.
Hey Jenn! Thank you so much for this awesome perspective! I always love hearing your thoughts. Yeah, it was definitely a great production. she’s uber talented and that really showed last night. I guess I wasn’t offended, as much as I was just struck by the juxtaposition between these two women at that moment in time — beyonce on our tv, and my mother sitting in the same room, and just how both, in their own way were celebrating motherhood. I guess, my bias came out as to which I preferred 🙂 hehe But thanks so much for sharing this! i love to hear different points of view! after all, isn’t that the point of art?! 🙂 have a great night! hugs xox
Glad you addressed this. I too think she is a great entertainer but she is by no means a deity, and I feel like that performance made her out to be one. She is an entertainer, not a god. She stands on a stage, not an altar.
Thanks so much. Very true – an entertainer. Yes, a good one, but just an entertainer. Thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
Yes there is. Humility is the strength and glory of man. The first in the Kingdom are the least in the world.
Thanks Joseph. Yeah, there’s nothing more beautiful than a humble heart. thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
I really enjoyed this post. Your mom and your family will be in my prayers.
Thanks so much 🙂 I really appreciate your prayers. Means a lot. Hope you have a great evening! hugs xox
Wonderfully said.
Thanks Robert! Glad it hit home with you 🙂 hugs xox
I see a lot of judging here by people. Observations she should be humble, and the only way to show the glorification of motherhood is by humility and meekness. It really isn’t anybody’s place to lay judgment.
I just think people might want to reread Matthew 7 again and think about it before talking about whether she represents motherhood well or not.
It isn’t anyone else’s place to do that.
Hi there! Thanks for this perspective. I definitely didn’t mean to come across judgey – that was 100% not my intention. I was just struck by the juxtaposition of the two celebrations of motherhood – one on tv by beyonce, and the other by my mother (without her knowing) in her humble state. I wasn’t really trying to suggest that one is any ‘better’ of a mother than the other, just pointing out the contrast. I’m sorry if this offended you. That was definitely not my intent. I will definitely go back and read Matthew 7 🙂 Thanks for sharing your heart and your point of view! hugs xox
Honestly it wasn’t you specifically I was referring to. I saw where you were going and I am sure nothing was meant. The problem I had is watching the comments become an echo chamber getting more and more judgmental as people post.
I saw less and less love and understanding and more and more preaching from the comments. This is not just here, most churches do this too so it isn’t something unexpected.
It wasn’t meant for you as the reason or my comment.
Ok, thanks 🙂 Yeah, I definitely tried to craft the post in as non-judgemental of a position as possible while still expressing my point of view. Goodness knows I have a laundry list about 3 miles long of things I need to work on, so who am I to throw a stone!? haha #butseriously 🙂 Hope you have a great Monday evening! much love to you xox
Your post got to me BBB! As you were talking about sickness making you humble. I have a sickness of sin. 100% chance of death. I wonder if this is the reminder that God gave us that he made us of dust. We are to be mindful of this fact. The result of being mindful, no matter how healthy I am I still have the disease, still made of dust, as I remember this it should help make me humble now, today Similar to your mom.
As my anger and hatred for all sicknesses and death become more focused, I find I feel more foreign here than I ever have. Yet, the more foreign I become the more tender I become to all the folks around me no matter what they feel or think about God. Yes, I still falter at times with my love toward other people. But now faltering for long moments. Not choosing to live in indifference to others continuously. Just changing with out notice unless others share and provoke a realization of what God has done in a mere mortal. Thanks for the post BBB,, what do you think?
Hey Denny! Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful reflection. Amen to that — I have that sickness too! haha You’re right though, we should try to remember that we’re dust. It’s a good reminder of Who is calling the shots. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts! hugs xox
Self-glorification has always been such a turn-off to me. And I have never enjoyed Beyonce’s crass and vulgar lyrics. She has such an incredible set of pipes–would love to see humility back it up, which really is something deeply beautiful to see.
Thanks so much for this refection. Yeah, Beyonce is a terrific talent! She has an incredible voice and stage presence — this performance was just a bit much. thanks for stopping by! big hugs xox
Love your heart, as per usual. Love your post, also as per usual. I am a mother of two and husband of one (one is more than enough lol) and I feel most blessed when serving my family. I do not want credit for that, I want them to feel blessed by my taking care of them. I want God to get the credit for He gives me strength. I am incredibly strong in every way, but that has nothing to do with me, all to do with God and His grace. He has chosen to bless me with strength. Those who glorify themselves really limit their horizons, they can only rise to their own pride level. Those who humble themselves and glorify God, He will lift them up stronger at each turn. Knowing is half the battle. Killing the pride is quite a different matter. lol 🙂 Love you, beautiful! Doing great with momma. XOXOXO!
thank you so much Tonya. I really appreciate your kind words! What a beautiful heart you have for your family. That is so lovely. Amen to that – Christ holds us up and gives us strength! Thanks for your encouragement. This brightened my day 🙂 hugs xox
Beautiful Post! Truly humbling! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much 😊. I really appreciate it. Hugs and love xox
Hugs and love to you too. Keep up the good work ⚘
❤😘❤😘❤
Great post!
I think celebrities are our society’s gods. That’s why we take celebrity deaths so hard. I’m working on a short creative piece about this same topic for my blog next week.
Thanks so much. That’s a really interesting perspective. I look forward to reading your post on that! Hugs and love xox
I’m sure that Beyonce’s daughter and future babies will look at her in the performance the same way that you admire and love your mother for her strength and beauty.
Women are too often asked to be humble and gracious and play small. For what? Every woman is special and beautiful and motherhood is universal. Her performance was elaborate but it was a performance. If you follow Beyoncé, in her Lemonade film/album (released in April 2016) there is a line that says “God is God, and I am not.”
Also Beyoncé was inspired by the Yoruba Goddess Oshun. She is a west African goddess of fertility.
Thank you so much, Sonique, for this perspective. I did not know that about her inspiration. That’s very interesting. And that’s a great line from her album. I didn’t know that. You’re right – we aren’t called to play small. Thanks so much for this great food for thought. big hugs xox
Beyonce’ is good but both you and your mom are both BEAUTY BEYOND BEYONCE’!! Biggest hugs to both of you!!! Happy Valentines to both of you and I’m so happy you are both together to share your love for life!!

Can’t wait to watch this. Thanks for passing it along. Hugs and love xox
Hugs and love your way too! xox
Terrific post-I admire not only your description of your mother’s strength and generosity, but the deep beauty you see in her-this is the definition of love-sounds like you are very lucky to have one another. Best wishes to you both as she recovers.
Thank you so much LJC! What a kind thing to say. You’re right – I am very blessed to have her in my life. thanks so much for your kind words and encouragement. big hugs xox
Hugs! Reading the comments here, and just wanted to add that our life experiences influences and shapes the way we look at things, it’s always immensely personal – your hand in helping your mother with her recovery has given you an intimate insight into motherhood, meekness and humbleness that is unique and special. Sharing it with all of us takes integrity and courage. Beyonces celebration of her pregnancy and glorification of her womanhood as a goddess is over the top, but then that is unique to her persona as a performer and celebrity status. Beyonces depiction for me is a fun examination of populous culture, and symbol appropriation within our secular world.
Now view together, both provide an interesting and dichotonomus discourse between the private and public, or between the sacred and the profane. – XD <3
Now
Thank you so much for this perspective. I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts! I definitely can see that – though it was over the opt, I can definitely see what she was trying to communicate, and I do appreciate her celebration of motherhood. Yeah, my mom is an incredibly special woman, and I learn so much from her every single day. big hugs to you xx
A very good read. A parent is supposed to be the strong foundation that the rest of the family can build upon; but when a cardiovascular accident (CVA) (new terminology for a stroke) happens, that foundation crumbles, if only in the mind of the victim.
In four more days I will pass the fifth anniversary of my own CVA. Right after it happened, my mind was screaming with what I wanted to say, but my body could no longer follow the brain’s orders.
For a retired senior non-commissioned officer from the military, a father, and a brand new grandfather, there was nothing more terrifying than losing (in my mind anyway) my ability to perform my duties as the patriarch of the family. Fortunately, my actions immediately following the CVA prevented the incident from becoming worse than it did.
Since that day, I am still fighting to try and recover all that was initially lost. My wife was gone for a week when it happened and originally resisted that I had suffered a CVA until the neurologist told her to her face to make her believe. Afterwards, she gave me no support which irked me to the nth degree and made me work harder to recover.
The best thing (in my humble opinion) you can do for your mother is spiritually help her by acknowledging each victory of progress she makes while quietly making her make progress no matter how minute each achievement is. Tell her how much you love her and present a positive front that she will overcome this setback.
In the meantime, you and your family will be in our prayers for as much recovery as the Lord will permit.
God Bless,
The R.I.
PS – Sorry for being long winded.
Wow, RI. I am so touched by your thoughtful response. First of all, thank you for your service to our country. Secondly, thank you for your prayers – it is greatly appreciated. And thirdly, my gosh! I’m so sorry that you also suffered a CVA. It just breaks my heart to hear you describe what you went through. That’s such great advice though – I will love her and encourage her through this. That is what I am called to do. Thanks for your encouragement. Sending the biggest hugs xox
Beautifully written. ❤
thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂 hugs xox
Well done tonight. Of course, my main reaction is at Patreon. No slapping around this time. Promise!
haha Thanks Jeffrey 🙂 Heading over there now. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts! hugs xox
Checked out last night shortly after sending my comments. So tired! Making a quick check of posts and replies this morning. Additional reaction to you at Patreon. Enjoy your day!
Morning Jeff! No worries! Yeah, I did the same. My body clock is completely different here in Ohio than what it was in NYC! I don’t think I could stay up past midnight anymore even with a nap during the day! haha And this is from the girl who would stay out until the wee hours of the morning on the weekends! 🙂 haha how things can change. thanks again Jeff! big hugs xox
This morning’s bible verse:
Micah 6:8New King James Version (NKJV)
He has shown you, O man, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justly,
To love mercy,
And to walk humbly with your God?
Oh wow I love that. What perfect timing. Thanks for sharing that Jeff. Hope you have a great day! Hugs and love xox
After your last post, had to share. Have a wondrous day!
🙂 Yes! I’m so glad you did. 🙂 x
I generally don’t watch award shows of any kind, so I didn’t see the Grammys. But I did see some tweets about the costume. Displays of bowing to any person are freakish to me. But enough about that…great post about your Mom and I’m confident she gave Beyonce more than a run for her money.
Blessings and prayers to you both (and your Dad – good for him!).
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your prayers and kind words 🙂 Yeah, I am definitely very blessed to have such wonderful parents. And I’m with you — a bit freaky. Unless you’re Queen Elizabeth, it seems a little….much. Thanks for stoping by! big hugs xox
I didn’t watch the Grammy’s, but I have heard a lot about Beyoncé’s performance. I thought your words were beautiful!! There is something truly beautiful about being humble, and I think it is something we all need to strive to be better at. Praying for your mom and your family. God bless
Thank you so much Krystal. You’re right – I definitely need to work on being better at that too. Thanks for your prayers and encouragement. it means the world. hugs to you xox
BAM! Well written and expressed. Motherhood is beautiful, on every mother – and God bless your mother in her recovery. XOXO
Thank you so much Annebella and Kate yes it is! thanks for your kind words and prayers for my mom. hugs xox
YES! <3
Thanks!! Hope your week is off to a great start! thanks for reading! xox
This is why I love your blog and I’ve missed reading your honesty and humor. I didn’t even watch the show, but for a while now, there has just been something about Beyoncé that doesn’t sit well with me. And I used to love her, but she’s just so different now. I love your observation of your mother and that you are able to realize that even through this difficult time, your mother is beautiful. In being kind, and humble, and never asking that a crown be bestowed upon her head for it. I love this post, as I do everything you write. I got that one day we can return to a world that smiles on kindness and humility. Thanks for the share girl!
Thanks again Celestial. Yeah, I think through all of this, my mom’s beauty has shone even brighter. There was another line in that book that says when people are sick, the qualities we love become even more lovable. And I think that’s so true. I hope that too- what a world that would be 🙂 hope you’re having a great Tuesday! Xox
Great post. Praying for healing and comfort for your mom as she recovers.
Thank you so much Anita. Gosh, I so appreciate your prayers. it means the world. hugs xox
Yes yes yes! Amen and Amen! Hit the nail on the head perfectly!
Thanks Mrs. B! So glad you enjoyed the read! hugs xo
Very wise and honest words ❤ Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂 hugs xx
Absolutely hit the nail on the head. I couldn’t agree more and you put this beautifully
oh gosh, thank you so much 🙂 What a kind thing to say. glad it resonated with you. hugs xox
We live in this world of putting famous people on a pedestal like idols don’t we? To see recognition of the beauty in the heroes we have around us every day is beautiful xx
❤🙌amen!

Great post and very thought provoking comments as well. <3
I'm with you on this one. My mum had two strokes recently and I'm experiencing the same as you. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Dina! I really appreciate you taking the time to read! Glad it struck a chord with you. Hugs and love xox
Thank you! I agree with you 100%!
Thanks Chris! Glad this resonated with you! Hugs and love xox
Happy Valentine’s Day 🙏
Thanks! Same to you! Hugs and love xox
Thank you 🙏😊
🙂 🙂 🙂 xox 🙂 🙂 🙂
Awwww too sweet 😊
❤
I remember when Madonna was expecting and the media circus hyped it all so much, you would have thought no-one had ever had a baby before. It’s part of the manipulative commercial game that their creativity is promoted through. We don’t have to buy into it and beauty is found in so many simple moments. The love flowing in your life is profound. <3
Hey Jane! Oh gosh, yeah I bet there was a circus. You’re right, there’s so much joy to be found in the simple moments – i like that 🙂 thank you so much for your kind words. hugs xox
If pride comes before a fall, that poor woman has a long way down.
Oh boy, I’ve never thought of that before, but in the words of Uncle Jesse….”Have mercy!” hah jk jk Thanks for stopping by! hugs oxo
I did not see the performance, but have heard commentary on both sides. I am not a fan of her music and never have been. If I were, this performance would have placed me exactly where I have always stood…not being a fan. I agree that the best celebration of motherhood is demonstrated in the pleasure and delight one receives from living out that role. Your mother, my mother and many others personify the very definition and true intention of motherhood. Those are just my thoughts…Thanks for sharing.
Hey Sean, thanks so much for this thoughtful reflection. Yeah, I agree – mothers definitely *should* be celebrated, as they bring life into the world! I just didn’t really appreciate that approach. Thanks for stopping by! big hugs xox
It was my pleasure…thanks for sharing 😊🤗
🙂 🙂 🙂 xox 🙂 🙂 🙂
Awww thanks 😊
❤
😊
I watched withmy sister last night and we both said the same same thing! Never seen such self-gratification and self-importance in my life! Humble she is not! 😣🙄 prayers for a speedy and smooth recovery for your mum 🙏🏾
Thanks so much Kerry! Yeah, it was definitely a little off putting. Thanks for your prayers (and for the reblog!) Happy Valentine’s Day! hugs xx
I have never heard her music but, she looks gross in that photo
Hi Rajiv, thanks for taking the time to read this! Her music is actually great…I was just a little off put by the performance. thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
Reblogged this on Kerrys2Cents and commented:
My thoughts exactly! Humility costs nothing and those who have it in abundance are the richest 🙏🏾
Thanks so much for the reblog! hugs to you Kerry! xox
Brave post! Not everybody is game to call out the culture gods. Well done.
haha thank you so much! yeah I’ve got to admit, I was really nervous to push the publish button!! 🙂 hugs xo
Loved reading this! I have always felt this way about celebrities in general. People tend to put them on some kind of pedestal. ‘Entertainment Tonight headlines! Kim Kardashian is having a baby!’ Oh my gosh! A human is reproducing (and is probably going the child a name from a different direction on the compass).
People tend to be part of the world; I try to stay of the world. As a Christian, I am a child of the kingdom and not of this world.
Thanks so much Joe! That’s definitely a great way to live! You’re right- celebrities become idols of sorts. Gotta try to keep our eyes on Him. Hugs and love xox
I listened to a brief interview with Beyonce’s father. He seemed so down to earth and grateful for Blue and for the new babies coming that I thought I might have been to harsh on the woman when I saw the nude photos. These types of “events” are so publicity, marketing oriented that I am just saddened by them. I don’t watch ANY of the awards shows. The amount of money spent on self-aggrandizement is just sickening. The shows are just huge expensive marketing ploys. Think of all the good that be done with the millions spent on producing those extravaganzas. I am not as kind as you when it comes to these people. Pretty is as pretty does, and I see nothing but ugly. I personally know one of the people who worked behind the scenes with the Bieber entourage. He is not kind, not nice, not generous. His success has gone to his head to say the least.
Ok, rant over. I am so glad that you are there for your mother. I, too, had the greatest mom ever. She was a class act in every regard, and she, too, lived to take care of others quietly behind the scenes never expecting recognition much less adulation. She passed at the age of 94 of metastasized breast cancer. It went to her bones and eventually every organ in her body. I was so blessed to have her come to my home to live out her last months and days. While it was the saddest time of my life, I treasure every moment of the time we spent together. We became closer than ever before. It has been 12 years since she passed, but not a day goes by that I don’t think of her. Sometimes, I wish she had not been so tough, loving, resilient, kind, hard working, and stern. LOL I don’t try to be her. Measuring up to that legacy would be impossible, but maybe I am evolved 🙂 enough to not embarrass her.
I had a marvelous support system in my husband and children. I know that I neglected them, but they understood that the only person I had eyes for at the time was Mom. We did manage to put on a graduation party for my oldest son in that time, and yes, I nearly lost it. Well, honestly, I did lose it, complete melt down that was aimed directly at my husband. We survived <3 A book called Final Gifts by Callanan and Kelley, two hospice nurses, gave me the insight to understand what my mother was going through to be supportive and helpful to her as she negotiated her final days.
Keep up the good work. I don't read everyone of your blogs, but I read some. I admire your strength and your faith. I consider myself a recovering Catholic struggling to recover from the damage done by too much, too early. Reading your journey helps sometimes to keep me on mine.
Hi Cynthia, thank you so much for this beautiful heart felt response. I am so sorry to hear that your mother went through that. Gosh that just breaks my heart. I’m so glad, though, that you were able to be with her during her final chapter. What a gift that was for her, and it sounds like, for you too. And graduation melt down or not:), I’ve found that when we’re going through something so difficult and life altering, the people around you extend a special sort of grace that just happens organically, as they see you giving all of what you have out for another person. Anywho. Your response really touched my heart. Thank you for sharing. Hugs and love xox
So many yeses!!!
Thanks Kristen! Glad you liked it! Hugs and love xox
I think she was extra being that so many young women think she is “the gospel” . I hope it doesn’t give girls boujee ideas on motherhood, because yes the children come first. Perfect way of addressing it without getting mad.
Thanks so much:) yeah, there really is a beauty that comes with motherhood. One that doesn’t have to be flaunted. Thanks so much for stopping by. Hugs and love xox
A friend and I were discussing that there was something disturbing and over the top about the performance. You hit the nail on the head. While I believe it’s wonderful to celebrate womanhood, motherhood, and all the other “hoods”, we must be careful not to glorify ourselves above The Giver of every good and perfect gift. We need to focus on praising The Creator instead of the creation. Thank you for sharing your wise perspective and insight.
Thank you so much Rhonda! I agree, it’s awesome to celebrate womanhood and motherhood. But you’re right- the celebration should always point towards Him, not ourselves. Hugs to you xox
You know, I’ve rolled my eyes occasionally at the excesses of our celebrities and the media that enshrines them. But I’ve never blamed them. I blame us. The world gives us Miley Cyrus because we watch her. It gives us Fifty Shades of Grey and Hustler because we read it. It gives us House of Cards (and Transformers 19 or whatever we’re on right now) because we show up. Thousands are going to perish in Myanmar this year, but we’re not going to know, because people want to be entertained instead of convicted. Here, more about what Emma Watson had for breakfast!
Instead of trying to fix the low value of celebrity culture, maybe we should fix ourselves.
Hmm…
I think you’ve just germinated my next blog post, Caralyn. Thanks!
Hey Brandon! Thank you so much for his thoughtful response. You’re so right! We show up, but the tickets and the tee shirt! It’s no wonder the media keeps cranking it out! We should vote with our pocketbooks 🙂 I don’t know what Myanmar is, but thanks for the great food for thought! Hugs and love xox
Hi BBB,
Amen. That was our pastor’s sermon as well. True humility is asking for God’s will and not our own. He sees the quiet seemingly unimportant things as very relevant. Your point is right on. Put Jests first, not self. That goes south real fast.
Thank you,

Thanks Gary:) I love that: asking for Gods will instead of our own. Boy, isn’t that easier said than done! Thanks for our encouragement. Hugs and love xox
Amen.

Can’t believe I’m about to comment on a Beyoncé blog….in her defense.
I am far from the biggest Beyoncé fan, and am not wowed by the entirety that is Lemonade. But I found this performance quite inspiring and celebratory, and not glorifying at all. I believe some of your impression is based in lack of information. The image is based of the African goddess Oshun, who is representative of life and fertility. I can’t think of a better image for a hugely pregnant woman to personify than a fertility goddess in her image. Also, if you paid attention to the digital imagery, you’d have noticed the still of herself, her mother and her daughter–an image celebrating motherhood, Black motherhood, Black womanhood and generational love. If anything, she glorified her OWN mother for the example she set and continues to set for her, her sister, and all of their children. There are precious few celebrations of Black women in their roles as mothers–we are so often portrayed in harsh, neglectful and derelict lights that the public at large begin to believe it of all of us.
I believe your observation has merit–I just think the path your traveled to get to it is a bit off course. Allow us our moment in the sun.
YES! Celebrities giving themselves status as “gods” is appalling, to say the least. These people thinking they should be worshiped is so wrong, so so wrong. I think we could all do with a media/celebrity fast and a lot more Jesus. They’ve begun to fancy themselves as people to be followed and believed and experts on politics, religion, and everything else. YOU are one to be admired, taking care of your mother. I took care of mine while she was dying of cancer and, you’re right, it is truly humbling and a blessing. May God give you peace and rest!
Thanks so much Tracy. I really appreciate that. And gosh, what a kind thing to say. I’m just grateful to be able to spend this extra time with my mom. What a gift you were able to give your mother. So glad you stopped by. Hugs and love xox

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. I really appreciate you sharing this perspective and insight. A lot of really great food for thought. I think Beyonce is a terrific performer and she is definitely a strong female role model to many. I’m glad that you found her performance to be inspiring. I definitely could appreciate the message she was trying to communicate, (motherhood should be celebrated!!) – I just wish she would have gone about it with a slightly different approach. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate you stopping by! big hugs xox 🙂
Completely beautiful. Yes, motherhood is ALL ABOUT humility as I cleaned my 3 1/2 year olds poo out of the bath this morning. I dare say Beyonce does this…
Thank you so much, my fellow BBB 🙂 hehe oh gosh! What a morning! Thank goodness for Lysol! Hugs and love xox
BBB that’s funny!
😎
They say politics is the ability to tell people to go to hell and them looking forward to the trip. I think you did that quite nicely here for Beyonce. Hope she reads your post.
Oh gosh, Dan! That was *defffffinitely* not my intention! 😬😬😬Yikes! I think she is a very talented performer and good person and mother, but the performance of self deification was not my cuppa tea. Anywho:) hope you’re having a great Tuesday! Thanks for reading! Hugs and love xox
Well, Caralyn, you could’ve fooled me! I had a dream about Beyonce one time. There wasn’t much to it, though. Definitely not one of the better dreams. I had to read what you wrote a couple times. I almost read defecation. I don’t know why, though. I had a high school teacher that liked that word (or “defecate,” that is.). I just barely wrote a post about her. Now you have context if you ever read that post. Defecation…Ah, Caralyn. Oh, yea, deification, isn’t it? Whoops.
Haha oh gosh. Potty humor…
Hey, it’s the best I got. You don’t know me very well, do you?
Lol
Great post and reminder of the beauty of being selfless. I hope your mom heals, and your service to her is equally beautiful.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate your kind words for my mom. It means the world. Hugs to you xox
Well said! Humility is far more valuable than many stones and jewels or gold. The Bible reminds us many times its is foolish or just plain not smart at all to put ourselves on a pedestal whether in words, deeds, attitude or attire for which one of us can sustain ourselves, much less another.
Stay grounded and learn what you can from your mothers example. She sounds like a great woman.
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.—1 Peter 3:3-4
Not to us, Lord, not to us
but to Your name be the glory,
because of Your love and faithfulness.
—Psalm 115:1
Thank you so much for this thoughtful response. You’re so right – it is more precious than gold. And yes! My mother is an amazing woman. Thanks for stopping by. Hugs and love xox
oh so so well said, as always!!!!!!!!!!!! I was very skeptical about that performance as well- but that is a whole other story (religious-wise) but humility- it is definitely a trait I have learnt observing my own mother.
society today- everyone feels they need to be recognized or heard or applauded and appreciated. Who are we wanting this recognition from? God does not work that way.
Anyway- well said!!! XO
Thanks so so much! 🙂 you’re absolutely right – God doesn’t work that way. The last will be first…if my memory serves me correctly 🙂 hehe thanks for reading! Hugs and love xox
Beautiful words – about true beauty! <3
Thank you so much DeVonne! What a kind thing to say! Hugs and love xox
Is there a more selfless act than motherhood? I think only one in history…. Great post and I’ve never really worshiped at the altar of Queen Bey…. Bono from U2 on the other hand….
Haha oh Bono…thanks so much. I agree. Mothers are pretty incredible. Thanks for stopping by! Hugs and love xox
Yeah I don’t watch the Grammys but I did heard that Beyonc’e
was going to be on there yesterday at work.
Yeah. Quite honestly it is more of a concert than an awards show now adays. It was a great show there. So much talent out there. YouTube some of the songs if you want to hear some good music! I really liked the Fighter by Carrie Underwood 🙂 Hugs and love xox
Good for you Krystal, for once again rising well above the questionable intellect and priorities of your generation to recognize what is truly good and important in a person’s character. You are wise beyond your words (which makes you stand out among bloggers). My wife and I deliberately skipped the Grammy’s even though we wanted to see some of the “lesser” awards (i.e. Country, Faith). We knew the political statements would overshadow the essence of the show, as they will for the Academy Awards later this month. I’m glad to hear we also missed out on several instances of self-worship. No thank you. What a shame to have to search far and wide for the “humble and kind” among today’s celebrities. I would rather read about the “real” in people, like what you and your mother are experiencing. Stay strong in your journey.
Oh gosh, Dave, thank you so much. What a kind and encouraging response. Yeah, I wish we could see more of the real in celebrities as well. Can’t deny their talent though! Wow! Big hugs xox – Caralyn 🙂
WOW! Your observation was thought-provoking. Yes, your mother is a queen as well for all she has done, is currently going through, and for constantly walking in humility. I can see how what Beyonce was portraying can be misinterpreted and in some instances idolized for the wrong thing.
Beyonce is one of my favorite vocalists! I see her as an artistic musician that knows how to strike up a phenomenal performance. Lately, she has shown more of her human side then ever before. I think people miss that. She tries to use her platform to relate and does it in a compelling way.
I pray that the world realizes that she is human. We all are capable of making an impact on the world in whatever avenue we choose. Doing it well and doing it humbly will reach farther I believe.
Just like the way you do it.
-JV
Hey JV! Oh gosh, thank you so much. Yeah I love Beyoncé’s music too. She is incredibly talented, this performance just rubbed me the wrong way. But I can definitely see the point she was trying to make, and yes, mothers and women should be celebrated, but I just wish that she would have gone about it a slightly different way. But you’re right- that is not a reflection on her mothering or anything like that. And I hope I didn’t seem judgmental like that. I was just struck wth the juxtaposition between the mother on the tv and the mother on my couch. Hahahah. Love reading your thoughts! You always bring such a great perspective to the table. Hugs and love xox
Your viewpoint came across just fine! I am glad you talked about it. The “B-hive” gets a little temperamental haha.
Thank-you for the encouragement! I am known to bring quite the perspective to the table. I’m just being little ‘ol me.
Thanks!!
-JV
Haha yes. A very temperamental B Hive indeed! 😂😂😂 I love the perspective and insight you bring! 🙂 thanks again ! Hugs and love xox
haha! Thank-You , Thank-YOU
-JV
❤✌️🤓
She fell low in ratings on msn polls, etc. prior to the awards. I don’t believe it is racial issue as it seems Adele implied, I believe it as a lot more to do with humility, or lack there of. Self confidence is one thing, acting above others… you loose respect. Nice article. I am happy to read your mom is getting out! Cute picture of you above. Make sure you are taking care of yourself.
Thank you so much:) I really appreciate your kind words about my mom. You’re right, the race issue literally never even entered my mind until the following morning when I read adele’s acceptance speech! (I fell asleep on the couch haha) But yeah, I don’t know, I just don’t even see race when I look at a person. People are people are people – no matter their color of skin, religion, country of origin. People are just people and every single person deserves love and dignity. For me, my “qualms” if you will- was just portraying oneself as a God. Any glory that we may get in this life should point to Him, not ourselves. Hope that made sense haha Have a great Valentine’s Day! Hugs and love xox
I completely agree with you – so yeah, you made sense. I hope you also have a great Valentines Day – I’m teaching my 9th grade Faith Formation class tonight 😉
Oh how awesome! Good luck!!! I know you’ll do great! 👍👍👍
Yes – been doing this for years. Two classes, 9th and 8th on Thursday. They called to ask because no one else would step up. I enjoy it. – Have a good night!
I’ll say a little prayer for you 🙂 That’s a tough age group!! haha you got this 🙂
Yeah – I do. At least that’s what they tell me. LOL 😉
hahaha rock on!!
Its funny how things that were once important to you completely disappear when you are caring for a loved one. Great post and I can totally relate.
Oh my gosh that is SO TRUE. It’s like poof they vanish into thin air. All that matters is caring for the person you love. Time stops. Thanks for stopping by. Hugs and love xox
This post was very thought-provoking, thanks for that! It helped me to open my mind to a different perspective. Sending my best wishes 😊
Thanks so much Alifia! So glad you enjoyed the post! Thanks for stopping by! Hugs and love xox
Yay for your Mum getting better!
Totally agree with your Dad – that was a performance all not worth watching. The “memememememepickme” culture is wearying. Yep, cool, she’s pregnant..but I didn’t need to see her underwear nor did I need to feel that she cheapened my faith either.
I thought at first glance of a still that it was a version of a Russian icon…with those neck rings some African cultures wear.
Thank you so much! yeah, she’s getting better every day 🙂 haha the “memememepickme” culture — that description made me chuckle, and is spot on. And i’m guilty of it myself too!! Yeah, i think her costume was a blend of a few different religious/cultural figures. hope you have a great evening! hugs xox
People see the pictures of saints and suppose that the halos are just an artistic contrivance.
NOT!
If you have to wear an accessory, it’s just wishful thinking. Our entertainment industry generates more heat than light; more chaos than warmth. I’m glad that your mother has you to reflect her glow.
Here’s my favorite picture of a goddess mother (I haven’t read the article, btw): http://www.piercedhearts.org/hearts_jesus_mary/heart_mary/virgin_birth_mangan.htm
Gosh, thanks Brian. I look forward to checking out that picture. Thanks for passing it along. And you’re right- there’s a reason saints are canonized, and not self-canonized 😉 haha Hugs and love xox
That is why I was so glad Adele won because she just uses her beautiful voice without deification or focus on the body!
Thank you so much for this reflection. Yeah, Adele is a very talented singer! And you’re right it’s refreshing that she just focuses on her voice 🙂 hugs xox
Just a small comment: “Hindi goddess” – Hindi is a language, Hindu is a person who follows Hinduism.
ah, thank you for this clarification. I will fix that mistake. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. big hugs xox
My pleasure.
xox 🙂
Fixed it!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
That was spot on! You are one smart young lady! Best wishes with your Mom!❤
Thanks Patricia! Gosh, that’s kind of you to say. I appreciate it. hugs xox
Many of the mothers who I look up to have one thing in common: Their humility. They don’t look for credit or praise. They just want to do what’s best for their kids, even when it means they have to go without, lose sleep or skip a meal. It’s the kind of the humility that reminds me of the Blessed Virgin Mary who was present throughout Christ’s life but never sought to stand in the spotlight. 🙂
Thank you so much for this thoughtful response. You’re right, humility is a beautiful beautiful thing. That’s so true, too. Mary said “yes.” Always. “Do whatever He tells you.” That was my favorite line of hers. Thanks for stopping by!big hugs xox
Very soon, dear BBB, we’ll be lifting holy hands of gratitude to the Most High, by the power of the Holy Ghost in the mighty name of Jesus to celebrate your Mum’s total healing. Did you not go through some hard times health-wise? Did you not come out victorious? Your Mum is well again, chatting with you and her husband, your Dad once again. Amen. I’m a man of great faith. I believe that you believe too. Amen!
Beyoncé? Whatever she does as a star will not come to me as a surprise at all. My post, “THE MUSIC STAR,” (4 parts) explains it all (please do find time to read it). The halo is nothing but Nimrod, the first ever earthly king and he is also Baal, the sun god. Her wife, Semiramis, is the moon goddess. This religion has been passed down human generations, in various forms all because Lucifer is the god of this terra firma. Many religions that use the ‘star’, ‘crescent’ and ‘halo’ roundness most definitely know what they’re doing. Satan has taken over, using the opium called religion. Jesus is Lord! Amen!
Thank you so much for your prayers for my mom. It really means a lot. Yes! I am so grateful for her healing thus far. God is so good. I look forward to reading your post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! hugs to you xox
I loved your post. Hope your mom get well soon. I, too, watched the Grammy’s (not from the beginning) but I started watching during Bruno Mars’ first performance, and to me that was the best show of all and the only thing worth watching out of the whole Grammy-agenda. It was one crazy Grammy for sure 🙂
Thank you so much Iris! Oh, Bruno is such an awesome performer, isn’t he!? Such a great dancer too! Thanks for stopping by! big hugs xox
As I read your letter, I am wondering if you read Brene Brown’s, ‘Daring Greatly’ she addressed narcissism and perfectionism so well in this book! It’s worth the read!!!!!
Really! I haven’t read it, but it sounds like an interesting read. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks for the recco 🙂 Hugs and love xox
I also found it difficult to finish Beyoncé’s performance. I was very confused by it all and figured it was just me due to my being out of touch with what’s cool, I personally don’t prefer her music. Loved reading your insights!
Thanks so much for this reflection! Yeah, she is talented. But as far as performances go, that one was a bit hard to swallow. Thanks for stopping by! hope you have a great night xox
This is a beautiful tribute to your mom and the true value of humility. Being a parent includes giving adoration to the child rather than expecting adoration for giving birth to one.
Hi Dr. Scott! Thank you so much for your kind words. That’s such a powerful way to look at being a parent. thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
You’re so welcome. God’s blessed you with a wonderful insight and articulation. Amen for you!
❤ thanks again. God is good! To Him be the glory! Hugs and love xox
I love this! What a wonderful illustration of the contrast between self-glorification and humble servanthood. So glad that you appreciate the beauty and blessing that is your mom. Great post!
Hi there! Thank you so much – yeah, my mom is a pretty wonderful woman. i’m very grateful for her in my life. big hugs to you xox
awwww so true! i liked it so much:)) thanks for sharing
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! Hugs and love xox
Well written!
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed it! Hugs and love xox
Wow how I love your post! And I truly agree with you! Get well soon for your mom. I pray for her fast recovery. And she is truly blessed to have you as her daughter. God bless!
Thanks so much Michelle! What a kind thing to say. I appreciate your prayers so much. Hugs to you xox
I didn’t watch the Grammy’s, but I gotta say I love your honesty, girl. And your humor. May Abba give you and your mom strength and fill with his love as and patience as she recovers. I’m gonna be thinking about that book now. Sounds good. 💕
(Also, I grew up in Ohio so I find this kinda cool you’re from there too. Random I know, lol.)
Thanks so much Julia 🙂 I really appreciate your prayers for my mom. I haven’t read the whole thing, but from what they were saying in book club, it seems pretty great! yay Ohio! 🙂 hugs xox
Hugs! 🙅 (hug emoji) and you’re welcome ☺️
❤😘❤😘❤
I loved your post and completely agree with your interpretation of Beyonce’s performance. Thank you for sharing things that are personal to you. I hope your mother gets better soon. She is lucky to have you by her side in this time of trial.
Thank you so much for your reflection and for your kind words for my mom. I’m definitely the one who is lucky to. E able to spend this time with her:) big hugs xox
Well wishes for your mum! x
Thanks so much. I really appreciate that:) Hugs and love xox
God is showing you so much through all of this and how wonderful to be able to say such lovely things about your mom!
Thanks so much Meg! That’s so kind of you to say. Yeah I definitely feel like God is showering His mercy on my family and I right now. Thanks for stopping by. Hugs and love xox
I learned meekness and humility later in life, and learned that things work out much better for me when I can admit that I don’t know everything and I’m not perfect, lol.
Good luck to you and your family- health issues are incredibly taxing.
Hi Joss! Thank you so much for this awesome perspective. That’s so true – when we can admit and accept that we’re not perfect, life gets a lot easier! Thanks for your kind words for my family. Means a lot. Hugs to you xox
🙂 Hugs back!
❤😘❤😘
Hi! I have nominated you for the Liebster Award! Check out my latest blog post for the details! I hope you accept and carry this award on! Have a great day!
Thank you so much! I’m so honored:) hugs to you xox
Motherhood can be comparable to sainthood in so many ways. Thank you for sharing your loving thoughts on your mother. My prayers and thoughts are with you both as you journey through her recovery.
You’re right, it really can. Thank you so much for your prayers and kind words. It means a lot. Hugs and love xox
Your observation on motherhood is beautiful. So appreciate it. Prayers for you and your family during this season.
Thank you so much for your prayers. That truly means so much. Big hugs to you xox
Not much I can add to that. Humility is such a triumph.
Thanks Harry:) I appreciate that. Yeah it’s a great virtue. Hugs and love xox
Another truth-filled post! Your care for your mom is the kind of service, love, and humility that this world needs. I nominated you for an award on my blog. 🙂 No pressure, but just to give encouragement!
Thanks so much Emily! What a kind thing to say. And gosh! What an honor! Thank you! Hugs and love xox
THIS. Love it. agree. SO glad I’m not the only one!!!
Matt Walsh also wrote a great post about her performance that I enjoyed if you’ve seen it
Thank you so much Brooke! In so glad this hit home with you! Oh really! I’ve never read any of his stuff, but I’ve heard his name before. Will def check it out! Hugs and love xox
Humility truly is a beautiful quality and I am praying for your mothers recovery!
Oh thank you so much, Heather, for your kind words and prayers. It really means a lot. Hugs and love xox
This was beautiful. just a beautiful. As a mom, I couldn’t ever want a better compliment from my child. I would rather my child see me as you see your mother than be Beyonce any day.
Thank you so much! yeah, my mom is a pretty amazing woman. I truly feel so lucky to be able to be with my mom here during this season. she is inspiring. sounds like you’re an incredible mom yourself too 🙂 hugs xo
Beautiful article, thank you for sharing.. I also noticed some of the religious appropriations and I definitely thought they were highly unneccessary
Thank you so much Shante! Glad this resonated with you. Yeah, unnecessary is definitely the correct description. I wish it would have just been about the music! Thanks for stopping by. Hugs and love xox
Amen. And thank you, for articulating.
And I notice long days
Thanks so much David! Glad this hit home with you 🙂 yeah long days for sure. Gotta admit…not used to getting up at 6!! Haha but it’s all good. If that’s what I’m called to do in this season that’s what I’ll do. Hugs and love xox
Being a weekly committed adorer…this would have broken my heart to watch. Mother Mary pray for us…. (Another wonderful post. And I am certain you are as much a blessing to your Mom, as she is to you!) Hugs & Blessings!
Oh Dawn, thank you so much. Yeah I had to do a double take at its similarity to the monstrance. Not cool. At all. Thanks for your encouragement. Hugs and love xox
Pushing 50, I am probably out of the loop, but I thought Beyonce was a bit full of herself. I didn’t watch much of her performance. Too much “look at how great I am” … not my cup of tea.
Hi there! Not my cup of tea either. Too self-glorifying…to the point of becoming a deity! yikes! no thank you. She’s uber talented, but this was just….no thank you 🙂 haha glad you stopped by! big hugs xox
Great job looking after your Mom and lovely post. A stroke certainly does change your perspective on life. Best wishes to you both for a good recovery.
Thank you so much. Yeah, you’re right about that — it has *definitely* put a lot of things in perspective. thanks for stopping by and for your kind words for my mom! hugs xox
OMG…..When I saw that very same image, like your dad, I walked away because it was irreverent. Self promotion and sensationalism is all I saw, if you have to emulate someone else and use religious symbols to do it, to me it’s sacrilegious. I wonder what would have happened if she used symbols from other religions? Christians have become a very easy target because we turn the other cheek.(Matthew5:39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.) Jesus said in Matthew 12:37 For by your words and actions you will be acquitted, and by your words and actions you will be condemned.” I rest my case. God bless <3
thanks so much, Raffaella, for this thoughtful response. Yeah, I was a bit off put by the performance myself, too. Thanks for sharing that passage! powerful indeed! hugs to you xox
I apologise for doubling up. My mistake.
No worries 🙂
I said the very same thing as your dad, yes!!!! I saw the monstrance, yes!!!! I saw a copy cat madonna. I had to walk away because it was so distasteful and irreverent. I wonder what would have happened if symbols from other religions were used? I say if you have to stoop to that level to self promote and to sensationalise your brand name, then it’s cheap and sacrilegious. Let’s see what Matthew 12:36 says ….But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. and more in Matthew 12:37 For by your words and actions you will be acquitted, and by your words and actions you will be condemned.” I rest my case. God bless <3
Thanks so much for this thoughtful response. Those are definitely some powerful words from the Bible. yikes. Yeah, that’s a really interesting thought…what would have happened if it was mocking another religion? Makes you wonder..thanks for stopping by! big hugs xox
Hah, this all reminds me of the saying, ‘the devil has no creativity,’ or something like that. All he can do is imitate the Truth; use God’s good-intended creation for evil; form false religions with elements of Christianity.
Not to say that Beyoncé is demonic, of course, but what her self-portrayal is evidence of a similar lack of cosmic originality, whether she realizes it nor not.
Oh my gosh isn’t that so true – imitate the Truth. My goodness, that really rings true! And very true – Beyoncé is a good person, her choice to self-deify herself was just an ill one. Thanks for your great insight! Hugs and love xox
Thanks for your thoughts, a really solid reminder that humility will always outshine everything else in life.
Thanks so much Alex. Yeah, a humble heart always shines. hugs to you xox
Perhaps this is why the truly Divine is so humble She doesn’t even show Her face.
Thanks for your reflection! hugs John xox
🙂 lovely to hear of the beauty you see in your mother … I totally get where you are coming from. Keep it up!
Thanks so much Harmony. Yeah, my mom is a special woman. thanks for your encouragement! hugs xox
I love this !! 😍
Thanks so much Orane! Hugs and love xox
TV is not a mirror.
Oscar
👍❤thanks Oscar. Hugs x
I like those glasses. Oh, so she’s married to someone that believed he was the second coming of Christ. It was after his best friend was shot in front of him he called himself Jay Hova. There’s also his friend Yeezus, that’s another Jesus…Jesus’s? No idea. It’s bad on Beyonce to include the religious references especially since her father is a preacher. I didn’t see it but I guess she’s portraying Mary? But, she’s already married to, Jay Hova. Art is supposed to challenge paths of thinking but when it’s like this it’s incomplete. It could be anything but it does look a little, goofy.
Thanks Kenzie! Yeah, that whole situation is a little…it just rubbed me the wrong way. I wish it could have just been about the music. Thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
I agree. Popular music tends to be all inclusive and all religions have been damaged in the public eye. It’s good to be defensive, it’s natural it’s actually better to understand though. Like, Madonna did something similar and a tour followed.
Yeah her name has been coming up a lot in the comments section. All I know is that I we never listened to her in our house! Haha
I think we’re seeing pop culture reinventing itself as religion. It may have been the next step as television took over reality.
Boy are you right about that! Oh gosh, don’t get me started on reality tv… *facepalm*
hehehehe. You crack me up
😎😎😎
Why do you think pop culture had chosen this moment?
I have no idea…
I was reading a research paper on weak ties and strong ties. Now, our strong tie is our faith but our weak tie is our physical bodies. I don’t know, you. You know? A popular person in social media, or media, can transcend that weak tie boundary. Like, businesses on Instagram. Do I really want them to be, my friend? Comment on my family pictures ? Without defining, something that’s important to a group. It’s odd, this public private life.
How interesting. Yes! The mind is strong but the flesh is week. So true. Very odd indeed
Do you think it will change? The minds of people.
I think anything is possible 🙂
It’s hard to see inside the heads of men. What is pop culture but a kind of programming.
Very true. They tell us what to think about and what’s “important.” In my media class in college, they called them the agenda setters and agenda gatekeepers
College, sounds fun. Although, with the first amendment getting tossed around it might not be as, liberal. Oo! I said the L word. haha
Hahahahha
I never caught those inferences until now. wow.
Art does have a cultural narration. Although, some art as religious critique turns hypocritical as the art piece loses itself in the performance. Maybe, she had an interesting idea… as we are all kind of lost as to what it was.
Your mother has a beautiful caring and loving daughter
Thank you Andy. I really appreciate that. I’m the lucky one to have such an awesome mom 🙂 Hugs and love xox
Many thanks for liking my recent posts, you’re very kind. So I checked out your blog and found this beauty! You are so right! I’ve long felt that her spiritual position was entirely opposed to everything Jesus died for, and thus completely indefensible. And I would also include Madonna, Katy Perry, and so many others…way beyond the line! So keep your heart in that good place and keep sharing. Bless you, I loved it.
Oh my darling Caralyn, I am with you on this 110%.
There was one song – Survivor! That’s it! “All the single ladies…” Never mind. I don’t know what makes people think they are gods. Seriously, who died and made her/them god/s! I have never even heard Lemonade? I have drunk it though. I don’t like Adele’s Hello either but I’m all for classic and a die-hard Bon Jovi fan so that explains it. I do listen to Taylor Swift as she seems to be my 4 1/2 year old’s favorite. I love Jessie J. I like Katy Perry. As Santana (?) said, and many people can disagree with me, that’s fine, Beyonce can perform but it’s possible the performance is to “filter” the singing that is not quite Adele’s. She is probably better than J.Lo to so many (I still love J.Lo) but they’re the same – it’s performance. It’s too much skin shown. Almost like Madonna, but Madonna was actually bloody brilliant! 🙂
Motherhood and womanhood isn’t as per Beyonce’s display; it is in the daily nuisances, in the humility, as you said. It is in the mother’s love, a woman’s love. What she was showing was for some of us – yes – blasphemy.
I know you’re in the industry, and I do like movies, theater, music, etc., but I think that Hollywood taints the art, sometimes.
Lotsa love my dear friend, to you and your mom. God bless always.
PS
I would like to re-blog this please, if you don’t mind. Then, I’ll just copy my comment as my introduction to the re-blogged post. 🙂
Thanks so much for this thoughtful response, Anne. I love J Lo too 🙂 hehe You’re so right – motherhood is all about the self-sacrifice. Giving. I mean, even just the physicality of it in itself — giving of your body for 9 months, gaining weight, morning sickness, hormone changes, no sleep, changing dirty diapers — it is a *gift of self.* That humility that is that giving is what should be celebrated. I don’t know. It was a head scratcher that rubbed me the wrong way. And yes! i would be honored if you were to reblog it! thank you so much! have an awesome weekend! hugs xox
Oh yay! Soul sisters, that’s what we are now. Thanks to J Lo 🙂
Thanks so much, my dear friend. You have an awesome weekend, too. Much love and hugs xxx
Yes!! 😍
Insightful layered post Caralyn– Loved the tenderness and respect you have for your mom– the beauty of her in these days of need and how you are sharing them with her… My mother had 2 strokes in November and is doing better than we’d hoped–but it is a process. God keep you and your dear mother in the weeks ahead. thankful for your wise words…
Thanks so much Rhonda! I really appreciate your kind words. And gosh, I’m so sorry to that about your mom. I’m glad she’s on the up and up. I’ll definitely keep her and you and your family in my heart and prayers. Much love my friend xox
Love reading through your posts this morning Caralyn. So thought provoking… thanks.
❤❤❤you’re welcome. Thank you!!
Refreshing and rational thought. Thank you.
Thanks Edward! I appreciate it! Hugs and love xox
This was such a beautiful post about your mom. I love reading about how you both get the blessing of this time together not just as mother and daughter or friends but as caregiver and one needing care. I know it isn’t always easy but you are so right about how this is a true testament to motherhood. To have come full circle with your precious mom and to grow ever deeper in your relationship with her, you are truly blessed. Cherish this season with your Mom, and all the coming seasons as the Lord leads you through this journey together. I will keep you both in my prayers for your mom’s continued progress and for your strength. Thank you fro sharing this vulnerable, special time with us, your insights are an inspiration to read as they point us back always to relying on God our Father to lead and guide us.
I didn’t watch the program you discussed but I saw the pictures in this post and on other sights on the web. The vanity and self centeredness of people today is rampant, it’s a me world and many celebrities feed of that. It’s one reason I don’t listen to pop music, preferring to listen to artists that praise God more than themselves, edifying music that focuses my mind and spirit on my Lord and Savior – not the things of this world. But I have heard her songs in passing on the radio and back years ago when we had cable tv and she can sing, just wish she would us her God given talent to glorify her Maker not herself.
Continue treasuring (it shows that you do) this time of your lives, soak in every moment of it, may both of you grow in your already strong faith in God as you grow in your love for each other. The love between parent and child, particularly mother and daughter, is priceless. And thank you for allowing us your readers to share in it, sharing your blessings with us.
Thanks so much:) that’s such great advice – yes, this is such a precious time with my mom. I’m not taking it for granted in the slightest. Thanks so much for your prayers and support and encouragement. It really means a lot. Hugs and love xox
Actually, I was sort of annoyed with how her and Jay-z announced their first pregnancy. Was it at the Grammy’s? I believe it was. I didn’t know why at the time – it just felt wrong. And probably very difficult for the thousands of women out there who are unable to conceive. I mean come one… yes, pregnancy and becoming a mother is a beautiful thing. I get that – I’m a mother. But to glorify it like that – it’s just not in good taste. Your mom is lucky to have you. And I agree with your post.
Glad I missed the Grammy’s. I was too busy watching The Walking Dead.
Thanks so much:) yeah I agree – not good taste. Thanks so much for your encouragement. I feel like the lucky one 🙂 Hugs and love xox
Reblogged this on I think, I say, I do and commented:
While many will not be happy and/or see this point of view, these two bloggers (C and I) see eye to eye on this matter and I do believe that there are many women and mothers who see and understand our perspective.
My comment (most of it):
I am with you on this 110%.
There was one song – Survivor! That’s it! “All the single ladies…” Never mind. I don’t know what makes people think they are gods. Seriously, who died and made her/them god/s! To my beautiful friend, a huge thanks to you for sharing this, your view.
Thanks for the reblog! Hugs and love xox
My pleasure, truly. Thank you. Hugs xxx
❤❤😘😘❤❤
You are one spunky, thoughtful, wise, caring, intelligent woman!
Haha aw thanks Grace. I appreciate that so much 🙂 big hugs xox
Well said and I could not agree more. I, too, took care of my mother and she was radiant with love when surrounded by her children. I’m also a mother and I love being my son’s mom. However, I seek no glory or praise for motherhood, the joy of watching my son become the man he was born to be is enough. How insightful of you to pickup on the subtle message behind Beyonce’s attire. Blessings to you for caring for your mother.
Thank you so much Savannah. It sounds like you’re an awesome mom and daughter to you mother. Yeah, there’s a radiance that shine when our hearts are full of love. It’s really beautiful to see. Thanks for the encouragement and for taking the time to read. Big hugs xox
You’re most welcome!
❤😘❤😘❤
add my admiration to all comments above – Well done you
and hope your mum is getting better ever day
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. She’s doing better everyday 🙂 Hugs and love xox
Thats good to know – you are doing a huge thing – hugs from us
thanks again xox
Beyonce is just using the law of attraction. If she pretends to be a goddess long enough, she may just end up becoming one. You never know.
Touche, my friend. You never know 😉
My lovely friend, Because you are fiercely bold, loving, courageous, kind and have the most incredible talent I have nominated you for the Mystery Blogger Award! https://onestoneaway.com/2017/02/20/mystery-blogger-award/ Blessings always, Missy
Thank you so much Missy! Gosh I’m so touched. I really appreciate it:) big hugs to you xox
Love this, and you’re dead on. Spiritual speaking I can go on and on. None of this is by coincidence. This is a spiritual battle against light and darkness, but here’s a spoiler alert—The Light wins in the end.
Thanks so much Talisha 🙂 The Light wins in the end. Amen to that!! Thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
Makes me glad I missed the monstrosity of the awards. Your posts always make me think.
thanks again! haha, monstrosity — that’s a great word for it 🙂 hugs xox
Yes, FINALLY someone agrees with me. I was so angry when she tried to steal the Superbowl halftime show away from my favorite band, Coldplay. Humility is the best policy! Xoxo, Ash
Thanks Ash! So glad you enjoyed the read! I agree – The absolute best policy! hugs xo
This was a great, post. I am glad that I’m not the only person who feels and thinks the way I do. I hope your mom feels well soon. 🙂
Thank you so much Kelly for your kind words for my mother. I’m glad this hit home with you. I’m glad I’m not alone in this! Big hugs to you
You are so welcome! I wish more of society would open their eyes to this… I didn’t watch the Grammy’s and I’m not really into pop culture for this reason. Don’t get me wrong, like anyone else I enjoy the entertainment everyone in a while, but I think pop culture overall isn’t having a very ‘positive’ influence on society. Big hugs to you as well! 🙂
I agree. We need more positive role models for young girls 🙂
Hiya!
I’m sorry to hear about your Mom…I hope she’s recovering well. I loved your post about humility. Is it okay to reblog it? Hugs! -Cat
Thanks so much Cat. I really appreciate that. She’s definitely recovering well, thanks for your well wishes. Absolutely. I’d be honored. Hugs and love xox
Fun glasses! They look good on you ☺️ In all seriousness, though, I agree with your dad! When I saw the picture of Beyonce, I felt nauseated. Her headpiece did look just like a monstrance! I wasn’t sure what to feel or to think, actually. I was dismayed, but I also felt pity for her and for others in similar situations. Clearly, she doesn’t know the truth about God’s love. When I’m confronted by what pretty much amounts to paganism in today’s culture/society, but could also be described as spiritual sloth, ambivalence, and ignorance, I am often at a loss, not knowing what to say or do, but I think your post is pointing me in the right direction. Humility. Leave it up to God. He is working on each individual soul, and it’s not up to me to try to figure out how/when/where/why. I’m just a bit part in this great, universal story that God is writing. Even though it feels like I am acquiescing, maybe in being humble and just living my life as best I can and following God as well as I know how, I am serving his greater purpose. Thank you for sharing your perspective on this topic! It’s a hard to grapple with all of the conflicting messages that are out there, and reading your thoughts is really helpful!
Hello again friend! You are on a reading roll tonight! Thank you! Yeah I was disappointed because I love her music, but the performance really rubbed me the wrong way. I’m glad I’m not the only one 🙂 and thank you for saying that. And yes-you are serving His greater purpose. He is the master designer and is working all these puzzle pieces together for good, and your life is one of those puzzle pieces:) thanks for being you. You brighten my day! Big hugs xox
Haha thanks you! Thanks for being you! I was on a bit of a reading roll last night. It’s good to catch up! 😉
Awesome! Yeah it great to see your name pop up! 😍
Awww! Thanks!
❤❤❤❤
Beautifully said. I agree, that true beauty is in humility and a good mother is said to praised by her children. You have honored your mother well. Keep on loving her. I know caring for sick loved one is a heavy labor of love. You are the hands and feet of Jesus to her, just as she physically was once.
Thanks so much. You’re right – there’s nothing more beautiful than humility. thanks for the encouragement. It really means a lot. big hugs to you xox
Although I have not seen Beyonce’s performance for myself I appreciate your comments. You were totally unbiased and were writing from a very personal point of view with regard to your mom. I wish you and your family all the best and that your mom makes a full recovery!
Be blessed, realsurvivor2
Thanks so much 🙂 I really appreciate your kind words for my mom. It really means a lot. Glad you enjoyed the piece! Hugs and love xox
Great post glad I wasn’t the only one thinking like this!
Thanks so much Dee! glad you enjoyed it! big hugs xox
Your mom and my mom sound very similar. My mom is all about giving and caring and never asking for anything in return. When she was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago I was given the opportunity to give back to her a little bit of what she has given to me over the years (although not nearly the same amount). And it taught me to stop taking her for granted.
My prayers are with you and your family for your mom’s recovery.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I’m sorry that she received that diagnosis. I hope everything is okay. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers. she sounds like an incredible woman. thanks for your prayers and support for my mom! hugs xox
She is fine now 🙂 Goes for regular check ups but is a very tough cookie. XX
Oh good!!!! 🙂
Amen to that.
Thanks so much Eva. I appreciate that 🙂 Hugs and love xox
I was sorry to read about your Mom. I pray that God will heal her and fill her with comfort, peace and hope. May God richly bless you for honouring your Mom with your help, love, support and encouragement. 🙂
Thank you so much for your prayers. It seriously means so much. You know, I really do feel that God is holding my family up through this challenging time and is with us. Thanks for reading 🙂 Hugs and love xox
Love your observations. I’ve always felt this way about queen bee…talented but sometimes the self adoration is a bit much. Womanhood should be celebrated and we should all see the greatness in each other but not in a way that makes some ppl seem so much more ‘God like’ than others. A mothers love is precious in all forms.
Thank you so much Nadine! I really appreciate your kind words. Yeah she’s a mega talent, but yes the self adoration is a little hard to swallow sometimes. Amen to that. Precious in ALL forms! Big hugs xox
There is an element to pop culture that is pagan and this performance exemplifies that. This is a great post and spot on.
The most wonderful thing happened to me as a mom. My daughter lives in Brooklyn, NY. She called and ended the call saying, “If anything bad happened to you I’d drive right down to Florida. I want to have you around a long time.” Warmed my heart.
Thanks, Nike, for this reflection. Aw, your daughter sounds like an awesome young woman. I love Brooklyn. I’ve had a lot of fun times with my friends exploring that part of the city! Thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
Nailed it. You have beautiful eyes to see beautiful things like the truth of what God finds pleasing. My mom had a stroke in December too. It’s difficult. Thanks for helping with your words. 🙂
oh gosh, Brittnee, I’m so sorry that you can so personally relate. I will keep her and you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. hang in there. thank you for the beautiful encouragement. Big hugs to you xo
I love this! Well said!
Thanks so much Rach! 🙂 glad you stopped by ! Hugs and love xox
Well said! A simple dose of reality wouldn’t go astray with some celebrities.
Thanks so much Melanie! I really appreciate that. I think you’re right…Thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
What a lovely post, your family sounds very close.
I think the whole celebrity culture thing is completely out of control. I don’t envy the celebrities either, most of them seem to lose touch with their true self and confuse their self identity with the way other people see them.
I think that disconnect is what causes a lot of the weird behaviour and alcohol / drug abuse that we sometimes see.
Having a lot of money also doesn’t seem to be very good, I was talking to someone about the dangers of hedonistic adaption recently.
I’m a big proponent of celebrating talent at all levels and not idolising people too much!
I still like my jpop and kpop videos though lol
Thank you so much for this thoughtful reflection. Lots of great things to think about. Hugs and love xox
Beautiful post: but it made me cry! (I lost my mom last year.) Prayers for you and your family!
Thanks Jeanie. I appreciate your prayers so much 🙂 Hugs and love xox
Thank you, enjoyed post. I just don’t get this whole thing that people worship her like some goddess.
Thanks again:) I’m with you-I don’t get t. Yeah her music is great but … anywho, thanks for taking the time to read this morning! Hugs and love xox
Thank you so much for such a beautiful and insightful post. Sending love to your mom and to you. Blessings and peace.
Thank you so much Dr. Sheryl! I’m so glad this resonated with you. thanks for the kind words for my mom and i 🙂 big hugs xo
This was exquisite. Thank you for such heartfelt, wise words. You are a blessing to your mother and to us all.
Thank you so much! I appreciate that a lot. Hugs and love xox
Your insight into Beyonce’s portrayal of herself as a “pregnancy goddess” is so poignant and fascinating. I love your comparison of a world-renouned pop sensation to your humble, struggling mother. I admit I’ve fallen into worshipping Beyonce in the past. She displays herself as an all-powerful, autonomous goddess representing all oppressed women. This image appeals to many young girls and women, including myself. However, if we exalt ourselves we will be humbled. And if we humble ourselves we will be exalted. Thank you for this great post!
Thank you so much! What a thoughtful and kind response. That’s so right! I always have to remind myself that the “last will be first, etc.” It is so counter cultural! hugs xox
Loved this. There’s a lot of self glorification these days. I always thank my mom for her sacrifice and love and she ALWAYS makes it very clear to me that she NEVER saw anything she did as sacrifice. That she loved every minute of being a mother. 🙂
Thanks Jennifer! so glad you enjoyed this. aw, sounds like your mom is incredible 🙂 hugs xox
Good reaction to Beyonce, all I can say.
Shades of Shirley McLane, “I. am. god.” she said in one movie, and endorsed the view in her other utterances. To deny the one true God and Creator is foolishness. To fear God is the beginning of wisdom.
Oh wow, that’s the first I’veheard of Shirley, but goodness gracious. Foolishness indeed. Thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
Beautifully put, and spot on! Thank you for sharing this, more people need to see this and get a grip of reality, and away from the illusions pumped to us for the sake of profit. Keep up the great work !
thank you so much for this thoughtful response. For the sake of profit…isn’t that the truth…Thanks for stopping by! hugs xox
First of all thank you for liking my blog 30 Plus Teams 30 Plus Dreams . As one who has had a minor stroke, I pray that your mom is doing better. I didn’t watch the grammys, but I did see Beyoncé s outfit, and I was really well, I just don’t know what to say. She is not the Virgin Mary and being a mother is a very beautiful thing. it’s a gift from God. There is nothing wrong with showing how proud you are of your pregnant body, but don’t portray yourself as some kind of goddess . Smh.
Thank you so much for your kind words and prayers. I’m so sorry that you can relate on such a personal level, but I’m glad you’re doing well. I totally agree with everything you said!!! hugs to you xox
😆😊☺. Thank you and God bless you and your family .
and yours too!! xoxox 🙂 xoxo
I am so refreshed by this post. I admittedly don’t have TV so I did not witness this, however, you do have me a little curious now! Thank you for sharing this message, it is something our culture could use more of!
Thanks Alisha! So glad it resonated with you! big hugs xox
I love this post! I’m working on something in Eucharistic adoration right now and seeing Beyonce also reminded me of the monstrance. Yuck. I think mothers are most beautiful in their weakest and most raw moments. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you so much! I think you’re right- it’s those raw and honest moments where their beauty really shines. Thanks for stopping by. Hugs and love xox
Thanks for this good piece. My sense is that you are being gentle with both Beyoncé and pop culture more generally, but I like your heart, and your caring for you mother! With best wishes, William Eaton, Montaigbakhtinian
Thanks so much William. I appreciate your kind words! Hugs and love xox
This post is fascinating and undoubtedly brave. Send my regards to your mother, and I’ll include her to my prayers tonight. I mean it. 🙂 🙂 God Bless you.
Thank you again, Lili 🙂 I really appreciate your prayers and support for my mom. It’s been a bit of a trying season, but it’s crazy how much good is coming out of this time together 🙂 Hugs xox
That’s good to know.. 🙂 🙂 thanks again..
❤😘❤
Genuine post. Wishing your Mom the best.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate your kind words. hugs xox
I watched the Queen Bey and thought she was beautiful and enjoyed her performance. I was struck by her costume as well but I don’t recall her issuing a call to worship her. She is a performer. She performed. She will sell more records because of her performance. My analysis stopped there.
Humility is a Godly trait. Clearly one that shines from your mother. To see humility, we have to look at people as Jesus sees them. It is only by looking at people with His eyes that we can see their real beauty, that we can see truth in them. That is how you were looking at your mother when you wrote this. It is her humility and your vision that is beautiful. You have the eyes of Jesus which look compassion on the world.
God Bless.
Thanks so much for sharing this powerful reflection. I think I really need to take your advice and work on seeing people as Jesus sees them. I appreciate your kind words. Hugs and love xox
Wow! My own mother suffers with severe dementia. I get everything you wrote.

Your mum’s present state of health Will become history , sickness is a stranger so it must depart …. In Jesus name
that is such an encouragement. Thank you my friend 🙂
You are welcome , we Thank God
Well said my friend. Thank you for sharing your journey with your mother recovery. I’ll continue to pray for her continued good health. I understand completely as I walked a similar journey with my momma.
Regarding B’s performance, my heart goes out to all the women who deeply desire to conceive, who have conceived and lost children, …what about them? I know it’s painful come every Mother’s Day that they are unable to celebrate. It makes my heart sad because everyone is worthy regardless of their ability to conceive, marry, or whatever the identifier may be. Thanks for sharing! <3
“So those who are last now will be first then, and those who are first will be last.” Matthew 20:16 (NLT)
Thanks so much Missy! I really appreciate your prayers for my mama. She’s doing so well with her recovery. We’re so encouraged. Yeah I definitely feel that too. As a young woman who is struggling with infertility, this definitely hits close to home. I agree! Thanks for this beautiful reflection. Hugs and love xox
[…] maybe she’s having to back pedal now, but the fact is, she released it, because we allowed her […]
I know this is late but I hope your mum is better now. Actually I used to listen to Beyonce music and I was a fan but then I later realised that if I want to be serious about my walk and relationship with God I have to be careful with what I let come into my spirit because gradually listening to songs like this actually affect one’s thinking and way of behaving unconsciously, I have actually witnessed this happen to someone I know but that’s a story for another day. As Christians though It may be hard we have to be careful about things like this because most of this artists promote what God hates and they make it obvious in their songs where they promote pride, sex before marriage, materialism, drugs and so many other things and as lovers of christ we shouldn’t let that into the temple of God [our bodies]. So that’s my take.
Thank you so much for your kind words about my mom. She’s doing much better. Still a long way to go…I’m actually at the airport headed back to Ohio now. Thanks for your thoughts – you’re right- we’ve gotta be mindful of what we allow in our thoughts and bodies. Hugs and love xox
I think I would lose my mind if I had that level of celebrity! It can’t be easy to stay humble when you’re surrounded by yes men (and yes women) and maybe in her head she is trying to promote motherhood and female empowerment in general, but I have no doubt that it came across as an astonishing level of hubris!
Great post, by the way…
Yeah it must be pretty crazy. Thanks for stopping by. Hugs and love xox
Truly moving post! [Dear Beyonce] Your are an inspiration and your kindness and support in your blog geared towards others overfloweth! Keep at it. It’s appreciated.

Dear BBB, Having just discovered your blog after coming to the realisation that I had some likes over on my own “writing” and clicking on your beautiful image, I wanted to let you know that I am inspired by what I am reading. Thank you for your honesty and integrity, values I continue to strive for, not just in my life, but in my writing. I am just learning how blogging works despite having been writing on a blog for years! Your own blog is Beautiful as are you and I look forward to learning more about you as I catch up with your posts and reading future posts!

Thank you so much for this, friend. Hugs and love xox
Thank you for your insight and best wishes to you and your family.
I’ve been searching the internet for other people’s thoughts about B ever since I attended her OTR II concert this past Sunday night. I don’t identify as Christian but respect Christian beliefs and I was disturbed by her and Jay-Z’s blasphemous performance. I’ve had a heavy heart since. I’m thankful that there are good people still out there who are respectful and can see straight. The concert goers were blind the the sheer disrespect to Christianity and God that was visually portrayed. I fortunately wasn’t familiar with her music enough to follow the lyrics which helped me focus more on the overall mood/ stage of the show. Their false messages of LOVE, Unity and Feminism only worked to mask their disrespect to God as the stage was on “fire” like Hell and people dressed in all red and random images of crosses were flashed and much more. I didn’t think it was a coincidence at all. To say it was all for show is so…easy but careless to me. Please use this as a warning… it has all been a wake up call to me.
Thank you for this insight on her concert. I appreciate you sharing. Hugs and love xox
