A God Wink Valentine

Happy Valentine’s Day friends!

Just a quick little note on this beautiful day of love here tonight. (My heart is still recovering from such a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss for the Bengals last night.)

I was at CVS this morning, picking up a card for my special gentleman, and at the checkout line, my eye was instantly caught by a magazine cover. (No, not the one of “Gender Obsession” notoriety). This magazine: LIFE Magazine, had Jesus on the cover, with big bold letters saying JESUS: Who Do You Say That I Am?

I had to do a double take.

Jesus? My Lord and Savior? Is that really You on the cover of LIFE magazine on Valentine’s Day?

Could it be true?

And sure enough…Christ was on the cover, issued to be sold on Valentine’s Day…I even checked the fine print on the bar code.

Instantly, my heart just swelled with warmth and joy and love.

Why?

Because Jesus is the original Valentine.

His life, one giant message of love — not only to the world at large — but to you and I, personally.

Deeply intimately.

I think sometimes, God winks at us in unexpected and subtle ways, that we can so easily miss if we’re not paying attention.

Like, for example, Jesus being on the cover of a magazine on Valentine’s Day, reminding us — not only of His love for each and every one of us — but also, challenging us to claim Him as our Savior, asking notoriously as He did in Matthew 16, “Who do you say that I am?”

Because that’s the thing, isn’t it? Jesus demonstrated through his selfless, holy and sacrificial life, just how much He really does love us. Which then begs the question: how will we respond? How will we live as a result of that life-giving love? How will we let it change us?

Valentine’s Day is so focused on love — either the infatuation with it, the lack of it, or for some: the bitterness towards it. But in this day of grand romantic gestures and flowers and chocolates, it seems that we’ve lost sight of the most beautiful example of real and perfect love in this world: Jesus.

Leave it to God to plaster a reminder on the cover of Life magazine in the middle of Manhattan.

Anywho – I am off now, to go have dinner with my special gentleman on this special day of love. And boy, am I grateful that God allowed me to start the day off right, seeing that magazine, and putting into perspective the gift Christ’s love that literally changed the world.

“Who do you say that I am?”

You are my best friend. The source and foundation of my recovery. You are my hope in hard times, my gratitude in the good, my comfort in fear, my joy in the everyday, my courage and fortitude. You are the fullness of my heart. You are the grace running through my veins. You are my everything.

“You are the Christ. The Son of the Living God.”

  13. I never would have thought that all that lovely food taking shape in your kitchen was heading straight towards a Bengal Wake.

    One has two true friends: Jesus and your dog. But Jesus won’t die on you.

    Did you know, that in the original Bible, the Hebrew one, the name Yeshua was encoded in the very first sentence? And that only the original Hebrew Bible mention Yeshua as a verb in the Kain & Abel history? He has been there from before the beginning, but read Isaiah 9:6 and John 1.

    Jesus said “Before Abraham was, I AM.” And: who has seen Me, has seen the Father….now tie that in with the scriptures mentioned.
