On the Eve of Our Gender Reveal

First off, I published a Youtube video last night: please enjoy!

Well it’s the night before our gender reveal, and I’ve spent the evening in prayer and contemplation.

My husband, Steven, had a work dinner out, and so I was blessed with the luxury of time and a quiet house for the first time in a while. And so, I resisted the temptation to turn on Netflix, and instead, opened the book, Nine Months with God and Your Baby: Spiritual Preparation for Birth.

And I don’t think it was a coincidence that tonight of all nights, I had the opportunity of time to sit and reflect on the momentous day tomorrow brings.

I have been reflecting on Psalm 139: 13-16

For You created my inmost being;
    You knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    Your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
 My frame was not hidden from You
    when I was made in the secret place,
    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained for me were written in Your book
    before one of them came to be.

I have been so struck by the miracle of life tonight.

I have been stunned in awe of the fact that not only is God creating our child as we speak, but in fact, God already knows this child, intrinsically. He knows every part of who he or she is and will become. These things are, of course, hidden still from us, but not to God. Our child is intimately and personally known and loved by our Father.

And tomorrow, we are going to be revealed who he or she is. We are going to find out the gender, and be introduced to the person God is forming.

It’s absolutely incredible. It’s absolutely mind-blowing.

We’re going to get the first glimpse at this beautiful, little person that God is knitting together, knowing full well the person he or she is and will become.

It is my deepest prayer that Steven and I can raise this child to know and love the Father who knew him or her first. The Father who is so meticulously crafting his or her body, mind, soul and future.

I pray that God guides us as parents to take care of this gift He has blessed us with, and shepherd them to the life He has planned out for him or her. And that He help us continue to grow in love with one another along the way.

Those are my thoughts tonight, on the eve of meeting our son or daughter. On the eve of getting a glimpse at the child that God knows, deeply loves, and is masterfully creating for us right now.

  4. The Psalm says that the way God forms us is both awesome and fearful. The fearful is mostly those things that we don’t know about the future for our children. How wonderful to know that we can trust even those things to Him.

  5. Caralyn, in an age where children and people in general are treated as something we can easily throw away, your post is both beautiful and refreshing. May God richly bless this reveal day, and may you both continue to grow in awe of the God who knits your little one and also created the vast expense of time and space. He’s amazing and so worth getting to know.
