Jesus is jealous of ED.
There. I said it.
You’re scratching you head. Whaaaat is this chick talking about? Has she completely lost it? Blasphemy!
Just hear me out.
Nowadays, a lot of us envision Jesus as this hippie-esq dude sporting sandals, flowing locks, and an easy-going peace sign, strumming an acoustic guitar, singing Kumbaya.
Thank you hipster Yaweh.
But I want to actually be serious about something. Jesus is jealous of ED.
He is jealous for you.
Exodus 34:14 “You must worship no other gods, for the LORD is a God who is jealous about his relationship with you.”
This can be a little confusing. When we think about jealousy, visions of “Mean Girls,” Gretchen Weiners and Regina George come to mind.
I mean, how can we even begin to talk about Jesus and Regina George in the same sentence? Jesus isn’t catty. He’s not ruthlessly guarding the popular table, or some other petty thing. He’s God. And He’s loving, and kind, and forgiving, and accepting. How the heck is He jealous?
I was curious, so I wanted to really understand the definition of jealous. Is it really the “green-eyed-monster?” Tell me, Webster.
Jealous: Yes, it means to be envious of someone else’s advantages or achievements. But it also means to be fiercely protective of one’s precious possession.
That’s the “jealous” that it’s talking about.
You are His precious possession.
Let that sink in.
His precious possession.
I don’t know about you, but when I hear that, this warm wave rushes over me. TMI? Maybe so. But I find so much comfort in knowing how dear I am to Him.
When I was in my anorexia, ED was literally controlling me. He was the center of my life. Everything I did and said was dictated by ED, who had a death grip on my soul.
#RealTalk: I was worshipping ED.
It’s not like I woke up in the morning and was like Oh hey, I’m gonna denounce my Savior and take up idolatry. No. But the way I was living my life communicated just that.
And that made Jesus jealous. Because He should have been the one I was worshiping. Not ED.
He was jealous because He is fiercely protective of His precious possession: me. His heart was broken that I was letting the darkness rule my life. He cried when I would lie and manipulate my loved ones and not care for myself. Because I mean everything in the world to Him. And so do you.
If I’m so precious to Him, then why would He let me have an eating disorder in the first place? Why doesn’t He just save me? Doesn’t He CARE?!
Well, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Jesus is not a tyrant or a dictator. He’s not going to force Himself into your life. You have to invite Him in. But that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms.
Jesus is jealous for you. Because you matter to Him. You are precious in His eyes — He loves you enough to die for.
And when He sees ED — aka death — controlling your life and making you hurt yourself, He gets fiercely protective and jealous.
ED is the antithesis of Jesus.
If your brain is already in “summer mode,” allow me to define that for you. Antithesis means: a person or thing that is the direct opposite of something or someone else.
Jesus wants to give you life. ED wants to destroy it.
Jesus wants to love you. ED drives you to hate yourself.
Jesus forgives you. ED forces you to feel guilt and shame.
Jesus is gentle. ED is…not.
Here’s the good news: Jesus wants to kick ED out of your life.
Why? Because He wants you back! And He’s as pissed off at that THIEF as you are!
SO. If you just ask for His help, Jesus will glaaaaadly open a can of WhoopA$$ on ED.
Because you are precious to Him. And He wants you back.
Alright, now if you need me, I’ll be in confession for all the sacrilegious humor in this post. 🙂

Idolatry of any kind is hard, invited or not. I totally agree – it’s not like one day we wake up and say, “I’M GOING TO BE MORE INTO [INSERT ACTIVITY OR PERSON OR THING HERE] THAN GOD. I WANT TO DO [THIS] OVER WORSHIPING HIM.” But often, it’s a slow build where something else becomes the center of our lives. We have to be the lion tamer before we realize exactly what the lion is, and that’s difficult… but the good thing is we don’t have to do it alone! We can ask for His help 🙂

Great post over here.For a moment, I was wondering what ED stands for but I found out that the ED that you are referring to means Eating Disorder. May God heal those with ED and find comfort in your articles.
Thank you so much. Yes, ED is the “personification” that eating disorder recovery treatment centers name the eating disorder. It is helpful when you’re “fighting” the voices in your head to be able to name it and thus diminish his power. Thanks for stopping by. Yes, God is good and we can do all things through Him.
