UNPLANNED: The Movie They Don’t Want You to See

I need you to stop what you’re doing right now, and Google where in your city, the movie Unplanned is playing. And then go see it.

YOU GUYS. I am so fired up right now.

I just got out of seeing Unplanned. Now, if like me, you have never heard of this groundbreaking film, well that’s because the mainstream media doesn’t want you to see it.

Why?

Because it’s a powerful ProLife movie that completely exposes Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry.

And they’ve even slapped it with an R rating, (despite there being absolutely zero language, drugs, sex or profanity) just to dissuade people from seeing it, and prevent kids under 18 to be able to see it.

Which – it’s ludicrous. Ken Rather, Exec VP of Pure Flix says it best: “A 15-year old girl can get an abortion without her parent’s permission, but she can’t see this movie without adult supervision? That’s sad.“

Unplanned tells the story of Abby Johnson – a former Planned Parenthood Clinic Director (and PP Employee of the Year), who oversaw over 22,000 abortions in her career — and her journey to leaving Planned Parenthood and becoming a prolife advocate.

It is beyond powerful. I ugly cried no less than six times during the film. And even in the cab as I’m typing this out on my phone, I still have tears trickling down my cheek.

But for as emotionally moved and fired up about taking action, I am also filled with deep disappointment.

Why? 

Because I was the only person in the theater.

Yes, you read that correctly.

I was the only person in the entire theater. New York City. One of the largest cities in the world. And only one theater is showing the film. And it is empty.

Talk about a let down.

Compare that to when my parents saw the film a couple days ago in Ohio: the theater was literally sold out.

Sold out!! And at the end of the film, a guy stood up and yelled “Now let’s do something about it!!” To which, the entire movie theater erupted in applause.

Isn’t that the truth.

Now let’s do something about it.

My prolife beliefs are no secret on here. This post is not going to spell those out – See the movie, and you’ll know exactly how I feel.

But what I do want to end with is this:

How, can we do something about it?

Truly, How. Because the truth is, we’re up against Goliath. The culture of death is so smart and conniving, and has crafted the manipulative language that by being pro-life, you are a) against women, b) against providing “safe reproductive health care” to women and c) saying that women shouldn’t have control over their bodies.

Those are the arguments, and it is dang hard to have the courage to even admit to being prolife, when that is what the opposition has gotten the entire country to believe.

You’re a bible banger. Oppressive. Anti-woman. Heartless against women in need of health care.

This film provides such an incredible opportunity to open up a dialogue. But we need people to see it. And with how deep Planned Parenthood’s pocketbooks go with donors and supporters — no one in the mainstream media is going to come out and support or even allow advertising for this film, because they’re financially in bed with Planned Parenthood.

Now let’s do something about it.

After the film, I couldn’t leave. I just sat there in my seat until all the credits rolled, they turned on the lights, and after about ten minutes, the young woman who was cleaning up the theater came in with her broom and dustpan and was like….”Uhh, you gotta clear out.“

Embarrassed, I dried my tears, finished up the tweet I was writing, and got up to leave. And that’s when the Holy Spirit came over me to talk to this girl.

I mean, she was about my age. Cleaning up spilled popcorn and ICEEs at an NYC movie theater. And I just felt moved to talk to her.

“Have you seen this movie?”

And clearly, seeing all the mascara that had run down my face she said…”Naw…what’s it about??”

And I said, “Actually, it’s about abortion.”

“Mmm, that ain’t my speed.“

And I said with a laugh, “Yeah, my mom wanted me to see this movie.” But then added, “It was incredibly powerful. I would really encourage you to see it.”

And she just kind of looked at me with curiosity. No judgement, not blowing me off. And I said, “I just think, right now it’s important to be informed about what’s going on in the world.”

To which, she replied – “Yeah, a lot of crazy $h*t out there.”

I smiled and as I turned to go, and she called after me, “Was it life changing?”

And I looked her in the eye and said, “Absolutely.” I introduced myself, shook her hand, and as I was leaving, I thanked her for how nice and clean the theater was, and she gave this huge grin – I think that, honestly, someone noticed.

I don’t know – maybe that conversation was nothing. Maybe the girl just really had to take a pee and wanted me to get the heck out of the theater so she could go on break and take care of business. But I don’t know…I just hope that maybe she’ll think about seeing the film. Or at least, feel good that someone noticed the hard work she was doing.

We all have opportunities to do something about abortion. Simply being open to having a conversation about it is a big one. We don’t have to bash our beliefs, or judge someone, or be combative about it. But just share that Unplanned was a powerful film. Or even just share this post!

But that’s not the only thing — supporting positive prolife media. That’s a huge one! The mainstream culture of death for sure isn’t going to promote or support this film. WE MUST.

We can also support prolife crisis pregnancy centers. This is SO CRUCIAL. My family is very involved in our local prolife crisis pregnancy center. These are amazing because they really do offer support and resources for young and older women who are in an unplanned pregnancy – as well as continued care and support even afterwards.

And lastly, the thing I was honestly SHOCKED by, is that I was really moved to go and pray outside of Planned Parenthood in NYC. And actually, I’ve already looked up where they are. I’m not going to carry a sign or be some outspoken, violent protestor – I’m just going to stand, and pray.

Because if there’s one thing I came away from this movie with, it’s that there is power in prayer.

Go see this film. You will not be the same.

  5. I was hoping you would go and tell us about it. I’m not going to see it. I was in High school when abortion became legal and I saw enough of my friends suffer from what was almost looked at as a new form of birth control. Today some of these ladies are Grandma’s and suffer almost like PTSD from the memory. Some did not even make the choice their parents did. A real mess that is really out of control, and what I can’t understand is why there is not as much effort put in to preventing pregnancy as there is terminating them. Someone is getting rich somewhere.

  6. Now you make me want to see it. It IS showing at the theater in southern California near my house. But like you, I truly wonder whether it will be “sold out” like yours. LOL. The R rated was uncalled for – I agree. Maybe PG, PG-13 at worse? And did you hear that their Twitter account was temporarily suspended? That’s right – Twitter said it might have been “inadvertent” and reinstated it but who knows? Errggggh. Whatever happened to free speech?

    On the whole, I’m glad this movie came out. Did you see “October Baby?” Came out a few years ago; the story was about a young woman given up for adoption after a failed abortion, searching for her birth mother and “answers”. it connected with a lot of people too.

    It shouldn’t surprise me that you had the theater to yourself in NYC. Who would believe that once upon a time it was the Democrats who filled cities like NY with pro-life voters and politicians.

  10. Had ample opportunity this weekend but declined because I heard it was graphic (in terms of presenting, you know, the reality of abortion). I was worried i’d have lost my lunch. I’m a little ashamed of that. People are dying and this movie begs people to see it. And I skipped because I couldn’t handle the reality of the murder.

    I will definitely be giving them my money when it comes out on video. I might see it in theaters. but just gotta talk myself into it.

  11. I saw the movie Saturday night with Xero expectation. I wasn’t even sure what it was about. Blew me away. It was hard to watch but a must see for my family! I have a 16 year old impressionable daughter who needs to see the hard reality of abortion. WOW. thanks for sharing this with the world!

    Perhaps contacting high schools, and speaking to sex ed teachers, suggesting class field trips to see it. As a class, or if their is push back from politics, then after school hours but still as a class.

    I had a question completely off topic. When you went premium or upgraded on WordPress, did you notice an increase in growth that you can say was linked to upgrading? Or was the growth more of your hard work ethic?

    1. I think this definitely needs to get into the hands of schools. Absolutely. To be honest, the upgrading actually stunted my growth. When you upgrade, it deletes the “reblog” button as well as the option for readers to comment straight from the email. Before I upgraded my posts would get around 5-600 comments per post, and now, you can see, I’m down to around 200ish per post. If I didn’t have to have a business account for google analytics purposes, I absolutely would not have upgraded. It’s actually a really tragic thing haha. I have tried and tried to get WordPress to change the way they configure the upgrade, but to no avail. My advice: pay the cash for a premium theme but skip the upgrade. I don’t even use any plugins except for google analytics. But that’s just my two cents!!

  18. I haven’t seen it yet. Unfortunately, I’m very busy this week, and I have a feeling it’ll only be in the theater for one week. I hope your conversation with the usher did something in her heart… and I hope someone who needs to see this movie does.

    I’m just glad that the Supreme Court rightfully struck down the state law here that literally required pro-life pregnancy centers to advertise for the nearest abortion clinic. The truly scary thing is that it was a 5-4 decision, despite being a clear violation of free speech.

    I think you did that girl a world of good. You got her thinking. You made her feel good. She just might see the movie. Here’s the thing; you can drop a small stone into a large pond, and the ripples will carry pretty far. It isn’t always about size, but distance. Imagine if, after seeing that movie, she continues what you started with her and – maybe – someone considering an abortion decides not to. Just because you were nice to that girl in the theatre.

  21. I assume you know this, but just in case you don’t, the movie was first a book by the same title Unplanned, and although it may not be as gripping, it still made me angry and incredibly sad. I’m sure the book is not rated for all under-18 people out there who “may not” see the movie.

  22. Thank you for sharing. It’s interesting how PG-rated films and standard TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy and ER showcased medical procedures all of the time. Yet this film garnered an R rating. The MPAA recognized that something significant about this particular medical procedure is far more serious than a gall bladder removal.

  23. Certainly one of your better articles. Thanks. And thanks for your stand on abortion. The first thing we can commit to do is never again support any candidate for any office anywhere that is not openly and totally prolife. It is impossible for a Christian or Catholic to participate in abortion and, yes, by voting for a candidate that is not prolife, you are participating in the abortion mill just like the doctor will the tools of death.

    Next, you need to speak out, often and loudly. Then you can go to abortion centers, not to stop abortions, but to lead others to Christ. Christ will stop the abortions. Then actively support prolife groups and events, such as this film. At all times pray that God will mercifully intervene.

    Abortion is THE litmus test of what it takes to be a good Democrat. It is dividing our nation. Satan has a death grip on so many in our nation and when we attempt an event like this, Satan will fight back with everthinh he has. Remember Eph 6:10-20, especially v12 ““For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Ephesians‬ ‭6:12‬ ‭ESV‬‬

  27. The thing that terrifies people of this movie (from what I’ve heard–still need to see it) is that it actually is a work of art which means that it’ll touch people’s hearts. People aren’t persuaded often just by facts but if your heart and your imagination are touched, more often than not, you’ll change your mind.

    I’ve also got to add that I disagree with Mr. Rather; it’s not sad that a 15 year old girl can get an abortion but can’t see this movie–it’s outrageous. Too often, people on our side are saddened by things when it’s perfectly all right to have some hot, justified anger towards it.

  28. I heard of this film coming here to Spokane, WA. It is being promoted by an organization called Life Services that helps women through unplanned pregnancy much like the one you mentioned. I agree the word should get out. What a powerful and courageous post you wrote! I wish everyone would realize the hurt that abortion causes. I’ve heard of so many that have aborted their child and regretted it and lived with the guilt for years. I wonder too who those children could have grown up to be and what they could have contributed to this world. Praying for these people is so much better than the way some of us handle it.   29. I like that she was able to vocalize her story to a level that few get to be heard at through, film. I dislike, that it removed her from the act. She made $200,000 a year indirectly involved in a single facility. She was responsible for following the state laws that limit abortions. Yet, she fights after? Did you know, even in Melania Trump’s birth country women get 15 months paid leave to care for their newborns? Yet, we can’t have babies for less than $5,000 in hospital bills and no paid leave. Distribution has a lot to do with the success of a movie a 50/50 split with the theater. So. 🤔 Can you have a story that reaches a wider audience that doesn’t misrepresent the intent. Which, assuming its for prolife converts or, mainly just, prolife propaganda? Myself. I respect the Constitution and feel its unfair to be chastised as disrespectful to my religion for thinking for myself. As I know, if we really wanted to end abortions it won’t be through a movie. Or, limitations on abortions it will be through reforms in the wage disparity for young mothers. Healthcare reform that makes having children less costly. Early childhood education money for more facilities and government funded facilities. Not, a tax credit having children you always need money. Now, not later. Lastly, the recognition that fear or anger is not Christian and not the answer to this conversation. What about all those aborted babies? Exactly. What about them? Let’s make it easier to have them instead of what we’re doing now to all mothers.

      1. I have a little cousin. She’s, about 7 now. Her mom, couldn’t afford an abortion. She stabbed herself repeatedly with scissors in her stomach. My little cousin, can’t use half her body.

      3. I don’t know. Maybe, we see how it affects us. We are arguing for the same thing but do not relate to a kid with a lifelong disability. Or I, not relating to wealthy people that border self righteousness. Pure Flix, the distributor hasn’t really done itself any favors in improving that argument. Only, profited from our discord.   30. To be fair, I’ve never heard about this movie till now.
    Recently a friend of ours posted on social media about women in Poland fighting for the right to have abortions.
    She’s Polish and so she was supporting it. We asked her why she would support the willful killing of a life and she said that we don’t understand what it is like to be a woman in her country.
    I agree. I’m not Polish and I’m not a woman. But still life is life.
    Then she went on the argument of, suppose the child was born and unwanted, it would be left at an orphanage. She said that it was humane because of the psychological trauma the child would have. Also she claimed what if a woman was raped and became pregnant by that. Should her life change because of such an ordeal? The child would be a constant reminder of that incident.

    All valid arguments and questions need addressing I’m sure.

    Our stance has always been pro-life. My stance has always been that abortion is murder.. plain and simple. And it is… But when the devil has been so crafty to bring out questions & scenarios where the answers are not plain and simple and where black and white needs to turn to grey, we as pro-life people need to take these into consideration and care. We often don’t have answers for such questions and which is why the Democratic party and left field political systems have taken so much of hold. It is the reason why Death has taken so much of a hold, disguising itself as the most humane solution.
    Our beliefs in God & the bible have no merit when the person you’re talking to doesn’t even believe in Him.
    When someone asks such questions, we need answers that are so logical, it would be illogical to argue. Does that make sense?..

    What happens to unwanted children? Orphanages are often so under-funded and crowded. Most children are often pulled from pillar to post and often abused.
    And no one talks about helping the woman who was victim of rape. More often than not, the rape victim is treated like she invited it on herself. Sad, but again true.
    Churches often don’t even discuss the topic of sex, reproduction openly. We just say it’s against God’s will and its Murder; and leave it at that. This is a huge let-down on our part. It’s all well and good that we talk about it. But we also not great at offering viable solutions and alternatives. Probably for the most part because our so called solutions all have drawbacks and are often serious need of support. Why?.. Let’s face it, because deep down, even most Christians are so self-focused, we don’t really care.

    I seriously hope that this movie does well and becomes popular enough to change things. I think it would be a great idea for churches to have a “movie” day where they show this film. Rally for colleges to show this movie on campus. The more the word gets out about this film, the more things can change.

    I live in a country that does not allow abortion because it is a muslim country and they don’t do that. I guess that one thing that Muslims have going for them. They follow their Quran without question.

    We in the west really like to “question” things, “understand” things (all in the sake of humanity)… and quite often, get it wrong.

We in Africa though, do not really have this problem because Abortion is still tagged a “taboo” in virtually all communities (especially here in Nigeria). Girls fear the embarrassment, so opt for safe sex. Nobody wants to be tagged with the scarlet letter “A”.. LOL….. And I think abortion is still illegal in many African Countries. Not to infer it is not done in secret.
    I would recommend this movie to as many people as I possibly can here, also. So it doesn’t become an issue here —my people are adopting far too many western culture these days.

  35. Good morning! Thank you for sharing this. We are so bombarded by all media to their world views. I believe (and I’m working on this myself) that we need more Christians using their gifts and skills to get out the messages of Christianity. Writers who write fiction can write books about pregnant young girls who do not have abortions and we can do so without getting ‘preachy’. A friend of mine’s 11 year old had to read A Raisin in the Sun which includes a young girl having an abortion so ‘her life is not ruined’ by an unwanted pregnancy. His mom had a fit at the school… and rightly so. I glad you have this blog, Cara. No matter what our platform Christians need to get more content out there. Songs, movies, art, blogs, etc. It all matters. If it were not so powerful, the world would not be so successful in putting THEIR content out there to shape society.

  36. This is not on my to-do list, because if the creators of this movie cared what I think about “unplanned”, then they would register a domain like “unplanned.com” (or something similar). Istead, they registered “unplannedfilm.com” — which is just a meaningless brand name. They don’t care about planned, or unplanned, or anything really — so why should I care?

    Do you REALLY care? Then you would register the domain. Or buy it. Sign on the dotted like. But apparently you don’t either. 😉

  37. I saw the “Behind the scenes of Unplanned” video as part of the Formed on Demand Lenten series, and I cried several times as they told the story of making the movie. I NEED to see Unplanned, and have to search for a theater in our area that is showing it. Thank you for sharing your Catholic faith with the world, and being the light that we are called to be.

    I just typed in unplanned.com — OK, so they registered it, but the redirect to their brand-name website. In a way, this is almost even WORSE! 😯 Since they are robbing the English language of meaning — they are essentially saying that planned doesn’t mean anything besides their brand name.

    If they cared about unplanned stuff that happens, then they would not redirect it that way. They would ask people to engage + participate in building community support + involvement when something unplanned happens. Instead of social cohesion, they choose proprietary redirection. 😐

      3. This has been bugging me — the “overlook that”. No, I don’t think I can. For someone who values truth, any case of muddy waters is annoying. Maybe it’s a matter of being TOO logically oriented, but I don’t think it’s WRONG. What I DO think is wrong would be to WILLFULLY overlook falsehood, fake information, etc. I would love the opportunity to discuss this at length (and also to explain more how GOOD information plays a crucial role in the world today, and how it will probably only become MORE IMPORTANT)… but I agree that is probably more or less OFF TOPIC here (even though this is a case where BAD / POOR information has reared its ugly head). Would you be open to having me create a page or a website to discuss such stuff? Would you join me in such a discussion, or is it not something you could even just IMAGINE caring about at all?   49. Wonderful piece! I have not yet seen the film, but I will. I do know Abby Johnson’s story and applaud the film and am so grateful to God for it! You mentioned that you were moved to consider praying at a local abortion clinic in NY. Are you aware of the prayer campaign 40 Days For Life and the connection it has with Abby Johnson? I have participated in Lincoln, NE for years. All I have ever done is pray as a part of that, though in groups I have seen signs. It’s always been peaceful, and most of the time here, I’m praying by myself for that hour of vigil. That’s not to say anything special, because many others do the same and more than I. It is, however to lift up the power of concerted prayer for the LORD to move and remove this scourge from our land. Here’s a quote from Shawn Carney of 40 Days for Life about Abby Johnson just before the release of “Unplanned.”
    “40 Days for Life has helped 186 abortion workers leave their job; Abby was the 26th. She managed the Planned Parenthood where 40 Days for Life began; it was right next door to my office where we offered free pregnancy tests and alternatives to abortion.”
    Carney says he knew Abby the whole time she worked for Planned Parenthood. He also makes the point that the child which she saw on ultrasound being aborted is the reason “Unplanned” was made. It is the legacy of this child killed in the womb that Abby Johnson has led over 500 other abortion workers out of the business and into the light of life. That story is a story of the LORD turning what was meant for evil into good. And the result of the faithful united in prayer to Him. Thank you for this excellent post and continued blessings to you and yours.
