Praying Outside Planned Parenthood: and the Spiritual Warfare that Followed

Well, well, well. Pour yourself a glass of wine, put your feet up and gather ’round, friends, because boy, do I have a story for you tonight.

I did something I’ve never done before, this weekend. In fact, I’m not exactly sure what came over me, but let’s just say I was moved by the Spirit.

I went to Planned Parenthood on Saturday and prayed.

Now, let’s just pause here for a moment. I wasn’t carrying a sign with a bloody baby on it, aggressively accosting people in the name of Jesus. I wasn’t causing a scene with a megaphone. I just got dressed up in a cute outfit and heels, and simply stood across the street, and silently prayed my rosary. By myself. I was the only one there.

As you read last week, I went and saw the phenomenal ProLife movie, Unplanned, and it moved my heart so much that I felt the need to act for the sake of those babies.

And so, Saturday came, and I had just gotten home from a jog. I was taking a shower, and all of a sudden, I just felt this overwhelming need to go and pray at the Planned Parenthood in NYC.

If you didn’t know, Saturdays are notoriously The Day when they do the most abortions at Planned Parenthood. And I knew I had to go.

And it was honestly the most surreal experience.

First of all, it was the first nice Saturday we’ve had since spring began. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky – it was warm. And it was as though everyone and their brother was out from hibernation that afternoon.

When my Uber pulled up to the Planned Parenthood, I was shocked…(but upon second thought, completely not shocked) that the clinic was smack dab in the heart of NYU’s campus. Which made me sick to my stomach.

But it was just so surreal. I was surrounded by brunch go’ers, and SoHo shoppers, and gaggles of bar crawlers – still tipsy from their mimosas, and right in the midst of this luxury lifestyle in Manhattan, is this building of darkness, where babies were being murdered right now, amidst the bustling, jovial life, just right outside.

It was mindblowing, actually. And in the window of one of the exam rooms, was the sign that read “Black Women Matter.” How ironic, given the history of Planned Parenthood. I won’t go into that here — but you should Google the TRUE origin of the organization, and particularly why they chose the locations they did for most – if not all – of their clinics.

But boy – putting myself out there for God that day…two things happened. And the second — let’s just say I was NOT prepared for.

First, the Holy Spirit really showed up for me.

I hadn’t even been on the sidewalk for 15 seconds when all of a sudden I hear…”Caralyn?!

I look around like — God, is that You?

Doing God’s work I see.”

And much to my surprise, I run into this guy I hadn’t seen in – no joke, probably 4 years. We went to the same church, and had been out on a few dates long ago. He was literally, just randomly walking by, on his way to brunch of all things.

Anyway, he totally boosted my confidence, and even gave me a few tips – saying that I actually had to be on the other side of the street, because they “owned” the sidewalk in front of the building.

And if that wasn’t God giving me reassurance — not 30 seconds after he left, another couple – super cute, probably mid twenties – randomly passed me on the street and said “God bless you! We were here earlier today, praying.”

So I was feeling really comforted that God was with me.

But, friends, the day was not all like that. And honestly, I think God did that, because He knew what would come later that day.

I got dirty looks. I got whispers and laughs. I got some crunchy feminists who got up in my face and in the meanest, most spine chilling voices said, “F%@K YOU.

But then, I expected that going in.

I saw the women leaving the clinic, walking gingerly, clutching their lower abdomens. I saw the boyfriends, pacing awkwardly outside. I saw the scared girls go in, and leave with a bag of pills. I saw workers leave at closing time, and mutter mean nothings to me under their breath. I saw the “doctor” leave that night, and I said an extra prayer for the conversion of his heart.

But the hardest thing I saw that day, was the “Quest Diagnostics” truck come and pick up the bio-hazard “waste” from the clinic. Which, if you are unaware — are the bodies of the aborted children. I wanted to ask to pray over the bags they brought out, but I wasn’t fast – or bold – enough. Next time I will.

But here’s where things get real.

I really pissed off Satan that day. Which – I always feel weird about mentioning the “evil one” on here, but look: This is who I am, this is what I believe, and I absolutely believe that spiritual warfare is real. Why? Because not only do I believe that my anorexia was a huge episode of spiritual warfare, but listen to what happened next…

After the day was done, I turned to leave. And I was walking down the street. And I kid you not – I hadn’t even gotten off the block that Planned Parenthood was on, when a bird attacked my face.

In nine years of living in New York City, this has NEVER happened to me before. I was walking, and out of nowhere, this disgusting pigeon nosedived straight at my head. And I was wearing my signature sun hat, because — hello, skincare — and the bird got caught in my hair and then couldn’t fly away because of the brim of my hat. And the bird was flapping and freaking out, and I was screaming and freaking out. Finally it flew off and I was left absolutely shaken up and DISGUSTED that a freaking disease-carrying, repulsive BIRD just practically got in my mouth.

So I’m like standing there, practically in tears, and this whole scene happened right in front of a homeless man, who was sitting on the sidewalk, shaking his cup, asking for money. And he laughs at me, and goes, “HAH! THAT BIRD HAD IT OUT FOR YOU, YOUNG LADY.” You can’t make this stuff up.

I’m shaking at this point. I call my dad in tears and tell him what happened as I’m hailing a cab so I can go home, burn those clothes, drink hand sanitizer and shower away all the diseases that were surely inside every orifice from the neck-up.

And as I’m word-vomiting to my father, the first thing he says to me is, “You know, that was Satan.

And you know what? He was absolutely right.

There is nothing Satan loves more than abortion.

Honestly – think about it. It is the single most divisive issue facing human kind. But more than that – it turns the human — the creation and image of God – against itself. It’s killing innocent children, and it’s devaluing the sanctity of human life. And people are adamantly fighting for it in the name of “women’s rights.”

Satan is having a field day with it. Because once you dehumanize a life – once you “sanitize” the killing of a child in the womb – once you decide that you can determine who lives and who dies, and what constitutes a life worth living, the slope becomes slippery and treacherous, and leads straight into Satan’s open arms.

And you best believe that he’s going to send flames, arrows, – even birds – at anyone who stands in his way.

And I experienced that first hand.

But that is ALL THE MORE reason to continue to stand in the gap for those babies. And that just tells me that I’m doing something right.

At the end of our lives, we’re going to have to face our Creator. And I pray that when I do, after I stand accountable for all the despicable and deplorable crap I have done in my life, I can at least say that I fought for the smallest and most helpless of His children.

  1. What an experience and a beautiful way to spend the day. I’m not even kidding. Doing something that fills your heart, as well as the world, with love is important. Bless you. And those people need the prayers more than a lot of us do.

Thank you for posting this. It encourages me greatly. Prayers for Pro Life, your protection, and victory in Christ over this entire issue.

  4. This post made me think a lot. This has never been a political issue for me. I just feel so much the pain of the young women who, terrified, face condemnation and poverty so extreme that they would consider terminating their baby, and on the other side, the horror of a legal abortion, or the even greater horror of an illegal abortion. Can a nation as wealthy as our really not afford to make the idea of having a baby a universal joy? I just feel this sadness around the entire issue. Your solution of just standing there in prayer really struck me. Prayer for the young women who need compassion more than they need a procedure. Prayer for the entire situation and the salvation of everyone involved. And a lot of forgiveness. This post really made me think. Thanks.

  5. Is there any literature you could possibly hand out next time about adoption services and places that help pregnant females in need? Sometimes all it takes is showing someone who is vulnerable there are other options–when fear sets in, tunnel vision happens and it would be easy for a young woman to think PP is her only option.

  6. This is an interesting read. There is much that I agree with in what you say, only from a different perspective. In a way, I find this an opportunity for me to enter a world of what might be regarded as contrasting to my perspective and offer my thoughts on the subjects you raise in this post.

First of all, I found the statement you made, “This is who I am, this is what I believe, and I absolutely believe that spiritual warfare is real.” to be a very beautiful statement. A statement that should always be respected and even admired whether another person believes the same or not.

From this statement, I believe all the rest happened to you. What you believe is what you perceive. There is no right or wrong to it. You yourself determine the right and wrong in it.

As for abortion, your reasoning for being against it may be different from mine but the ultimate result is the same. For me, abortion is an easy out for what some might consider a mistake. A mistake should be learned from, not just extinguished and swept under the rug so they can go on without any consequences. I don’t believe life to be a mistake but a work of art that should always be allowed to express itself.

It may seem to be an easy out but it has even worse consequences that don’t appear until after the true mistake of the abortion occur. The repercussions will be mental and emotional, affecting them for the rest of their lives, unless they have no conscience at all, which I doubt is true in any human being.

This is the sad part. That they don’t understand this until it is too late. Even hearing about it from others won’t convince all people. They see the quick fix that they think will purify them from the mistake, believing they can get away unscathed without taking any responsibility for it themselves.

There are plenty of loving people out there who would be happy to adopt a child. This, of course, would mean going through the long pregnancy and also the pain of childbirth. Abortion takes care of those consequences. Necessary consequences that would be as much a learning experience coming from the mistake as well as healing for them.

It would relieve them of a lifetime of painful mental and emotional consequences that the quick fix would cause in exchange for the short term pain of the pregnancy and childbirth. The end result would be a happy couple who would now have a child to love, care for and allow this being to express itself fully through being alive. It would also result in the birth mother learning from her mistake and hopefully not doing it again. She would have also taken responsibility for her actions.

I also agree that the issue of abortion is very divisive. As you expressed from your experience, there is much hatred, bias and even bigotry coming from both sides when there should be understanding. Understanding each other. Sadly, when there is opposition to something it often raises both awareness of the issue and also acceptance of the issue. The for and against syndrome. The competition to be right. In the middle are the victims, not only the babies in this case, but also those innocent people who are getting the abortion. How dare I call them innocent. They are evil horrible people. No, they are not evil horrible people. Their perspective is simply skewed.

Coming at them from a religious perspective only causes more confusion because there is much divisiveness on the subject of belief. Some people don’t want to consider themselves judged by some deity and it also causes rebellion toward the issue at hand if they have such a perspective. People in rebellion often act rashly, without taking into account the end result of their actions. They react to the problem rather than respond to it.

In some way, the adversity toward you is not only about your stance on abortion but also your belief. It might be difficult for a devoutly religious person to be able to understand the life of someone who isn’t religious and vice versa. For this issue to be resolved both parties have to meet on neutral ground. An understanding would have to gained between each party. This is true with all the divisive issues that plague this country and the world. Simply fighting for God for what a person believes is right is not going to solve the problem. In fact, it will only fuel the fire. The competition to be right will become the focus rather than the true issue at hand.

Because this issue, for the most part, has become a religious against the secular issue, it would be very difficult to unwind this and get back to neutral ground. Therefore I can see this issue going on for a very long time, no matter how many prayers are said. There are too many internal complications that have become instilled within the issue that are not even about the true issue of abortion.

I don’t know if the religious and the secular will ever be able to truly meet on neutral ground. One side or the other will believe they are right and the other is wrong. Maybe if we eliminate the desire to be right and the competition of proving the other wrong then this might allow both sides to come to the table with clarity of mind and heart and be able to solve their differences with this issue as well as all the issues of divisiveness that plague this country and the world.

It seems an impossible task where those who believe in a God might simply turn to prayer with hope that their God will resolve it for them. This, of course, leads into the conflict of deism vs theism. Does the deity interfere in human events or does it simply create and allow the creation to work it out for themselves? It seems, when it comes to belief, there is always a conflict of some sort.

Sadly, I believe this hope in prayer to solve this issue is also a desire for a quick fix to something where they (the religious or pro life) also need to take responsibility for themselves by seeking to understand those of a different point of view rather than believing them to be an adversary that they must overcome through the competition of being right. That it is a battle between good and evil rather than in simply bringing together two different perspectives and allowing them to join through compromise and understanding. Finding the good in both rather than focusing on what they believe is evil in the other.

Thank you for liking my post and allowing me to come here and find the opportunity of offering a different viewpoint on an issue that we both agree on.

  8. Hi Caralyn! This is Amber from the Return2Christ blog. First, I want to thank you for your support. It means the world to me. Second, I want to commend you for taking a stand and doing what you did. It is no easy task. God called you, and you did as he asked. Amen, sister!

Spiritual warfare is absolutely real. I have a knowledge of it that came at a very high price. I am a survivor of demonic possession. Jesus Christ saved my life. I am happy to share a few things that I have learned from my experiences. I agree with your very wise father- it really was Satan. I read your experience with the bird and it immediately resonated with my own experiences. I’m so sorry that happened to you. The enemy can and will use birds and smaller creatures for scare tactics, or for fulfilling their purposes and plans to put us on edge/lead us astray/cause fear, etc. When I was deep into new age practices, I would ask “the universe” for signs. I’d go outside, and there would be my signs- the birds, butterflies, insects, in the way that I had asked for them. It was completely abnormal. It was complete deception. Geese would fly right by my window and honk at midnight. So many strange things. When I finally realized that the New Age practices were actually Satanic, it got worse before it got better. I had to fight my way out. I still fight them today. The night I published my blog about my story, my IPad kept crashing and it took me hours longer than it should have. My point being, that I had to learn to take these attacks as indications that I was going in the right direction. I know they are scary, and startling, and just plain rude. But, Satan doesn’t waste his time fighting those who aren’t threatening to his plan. He fights those who stand with Christ. I believe Satan knows our potential as well. That’s why he fights us so hard.
I’ll be praying for you! Keep going and keep praying. Keep following the Holy Spirit- do what God puts in your heart. Maybe this first step will turn into something much bigger- For with God, nothing shall be impossible. ❤️

  14. From my Angels story in “DebDays” blog. Remember you are protected in unseen ways. I was starting a bible story in Switzerland when this happened.

“Miracles occur even on trails where you least expect it. I was hiking in Switzerland with my friend on a trail that passed through wooded areas and into stunning clearings. He was ahead of me about two hundred feet and I was coming out of the trees onto an area of the mountain where you could not see the top of the mountain to my left.
As I stepped onto the path, I felt a hand on my shoulder and paused.

It was a feeling, and I paused maybe two or three seconds.

As I took my first step, I heard something and looked up. A huge boulder at least two feet in diameter came bouncing down the mountain onto the trail and continued down the mountain.

I stood there stunned as my friend turned around to find the source of the sound. I could have been killed.” Make sure to pray when you are in warfare.

Heck, I just underwent the biggest demonic attack I’ve ever been through because of my last two posts!!!

  17. Caralyn, how timely to read this just after Sunday’s reading of the woman caught in adultery and Jesus’ challenge not to judge. With your own history of knowing despair and living that despair through starvation, you seem particularly suited to relate to the despair of those going to PP. You also know how love changes despair to hope, and so are able to show that love to those at PP. Injecting hope into despair is such a powerful witness to the transformational power of Jesus. You go, girl!

    1. Hi Madeline! Thank you so much! I’m so very grateful that you said that – because my heart and my presence there was not coming from a place of judgement at all. But love. That’s the tough thing – is that people assume that when you show up there to pray that you are doing so in judgement of the women entering those doors. But that could not be more opposite of the truth. We are called to love. Only love. And loving people through the hard and scary times – that is so important. You’re right – I love this gospel passage. It tells us everything we need to know. Thank you so much for your support. Hugs and love xox

  22. Wow. I missed this post when it first came out, for some reason, but holy wow.

I’m kind of …. non-Christian with my abortion beliefs. I’m not saying I’d ever have an abortion–I’d probably be unable to go through with one. But in my mind, souls have more than one chance if a given life doesn’t happen. They simply wind up being born into a different life instead. (Of course, if I’m wrong, then… that’s really bad. But if I’m right, then abortion isn’t as destructive as it seems.)

But that bird thing is freaky scary. It gave me the shivers to read about!! You are a very brave woman and a good role model to all of us, and I’m also sorry that people f-bombed you. That bites.

  23. Thank you Jesus for protecting your beloved! Amen! Spiritual warfare is very real my sister. I remembered going to a prayer meeting at one of our members home and she told me and the others,”You know the enemy is going to come after you all for this?” I was like, “Oh really?” I wasn’t scared cause I know God is my shield. Well he sure did come but I called on the name of Jesus Christ and he delivered me! Thank you Lord! Continue to stand up for Jesus! You will be greatly rewarded in the end. So sad to see this support for such wickedness against God’s heritage. My gosh! Have mercy on America Lord! Blessings & grace.. 🙂 ❤

  24. Thank you for sharing your story, and for answering God’s call to pray on that sidewalk.
One day, everyone will know how evil abortion is, and all eyes will be opened. All we can do is pray that “one day” comes sooner, rather than later.

  25. Have you thought about doing something actionable to change the situation of women who are thinking about abortion in addition to praying? I mean…. no one wants an abortion for fun. I don’t know …. Something like volunteering at women’s shelter? Or help someone to actually get her life under control, like keeping a job and get available help from the state? I don’t know …. something like really understanding reasons why women go through that and trying to change this reasons?

  26. When you tangle with the forces of evil, don’t be surprised that things don’t go your way. I’ve been in spiritual warfare sessions enough to know that you don’t just walk into the valley of the shadow of death, without a little bit of preparation. No soldier goes into battle unprepared. In the bible, Moses was instructed to slaughter a lamb and place its blood on the doors of the houses of the Israelites, so that the Angel of Death would not touch any of their first born children.
It was the blood that protected the children of Israel. In the same way, what you should do is speak and declare the covering of the blood of Christ over yourself. This is your hedge of protection from the forces that you will encounter. Secondly, you notice that Jesus never sent his disciples out alone. It was always in pairs. Because if you look the armor of God mentioned in the bible, its all forward facing. So what covers your back, your partner. In the spirit you’re walking with your backs against each other to protect each other while you battle with the enemy.

So I would say that before you do it again, join with someone, plead the blood and covering over yourselves and then go into the battleground. I hope this helps Caralyn. Keep up the good work.

  27. Inspiring post. How would a bird be used in a satanic attack, and why would it happen in New York and Chicago as another commenter said? Maybe not how you think, and I wanted to speculate about the modus operandi used here. I have already heard rumours of such things for instance using insects, from targetted individuals and survivors of military mind control such as Katy Groves. Those with the satanic psychopathic mindset have been engaged in large scale technological and psychological research since the second world war and reports from survivors and whistle-blowers consistently state that military black ops technology is more advanced than consumer technology. Elisa E for instance has warned of dark-tech where ill intentioned occult knowledge is combined with advanced technological methods, using for instance genetic engineering, electromagnetics and implantation. I suspect that after your prayer you were glowing, which is what triggered the bird attack, and that also the church goer from Chicago was glowing on her way to church. There is much criminal activity in both New York and Chicago to do with black-ops. The sinister activities you were combatting serve as an energy source for dark-tech. The attack also shows to me that your spiritual activity had been effective, so well done.

  29. Dear Beautybeyondbones,

I love your tenacity, bravery, boldness and faith! You were on Gods frontlines of warfare and you made the enemy mad! Good for you! I know all too well the attacks of the enemy and what you did was establish your authority in Christ that
Jesus gave us before he ascended
To heaven! He gave us all authority over the enemy! Actually this is the second time I’ve responded to your blog, the first time as I was typing, just disappeared! Go figure! Keep up the good work! Praying against abortion and praying for it to be stopped completely is stepping on Satan’s tors big time! This stronghold he has runs strong and deep! God forgive us for even letting it get started! I my sister in Christ stand with you in this war! God shall prevail and win! May the heart of every woman who finds themselves with child have such a live for the life of that child nothing will persuade you to take it! Keep fighting the good fight with a vengeance and I will also! May God protect you and empower you as you fight this good fight!
