Say His Name

Before I start tonight, I’d like to ask a favor. If you’re like me, then you’re doing all your shopping online. Yep, I haven’t gone in a store for 77 days. I’m buying everything online –including groceries — through Amazon.

And my “ask” is that, the next time you shop on Amazon, if you could start your shopping from my Amazon homepage. It costs absolutely nothing for you, but by stopping by my link first, Amazon will give this blog a small percentage from your purchase. It is a 100% free and super easy way to support this online ministry, and allow me to continue to bring you this content for free every week. It greatly helps, and for those who are already doing this: thank you — I am so very grateful.

OK: Onto tonight’s post!

George Floyd.

If that name is unfamiliar with you, please allow me to remedy that.

George Floyd was the victim of a horrific act of police brutality on Monday in Minneapolis.

Floyd, 46, a black man, died after a police officer kneeled on his neck, pinning him to the ground for several minutes. He was in hand-cuffs, cooperating, face down on the pavement, all the while pleading, “Please, I can’t breathe” while bystanders recorded the heinous incident, begging the officer to release the man who was clearly dying.

This gut wrenching scene continued until Floyd became motionless, and died a short time later.

Police had been called to the scene for a non-violent incident — forgery. And police claim that Floyd “physically resisted” getting out of the car when instructed to.

There’s a video circulating online that shows the entire unspeakable incident, and watching it made me absolutely sick. Seeing George Floyd’s face smashed into the concrete, as an officer kneeled on his neck, as though Floyd were not even human — it is unconscionable that a person could deem this behavior as acceptable.

The inhumane treatment of this non-violent man is the epitome of deplorable. And has sparked nationwide outcry, as it very well should.

And sitting here, as a blogger, I could not let this atrocity go unspoken. But I’m going to be honest, knowing how to talk about something of such magnitude – I feel incredibly unqualified to even broach the topic.

It is arrogant to think that there’s possibly anything I could add of value to the conversation. I do not know what it is like to be black in America. I do not know what it is like to be targeted by authorities and society due to my race. Nor do I know what it is like to be a cop, and put my life on the line, serving the community every day.

And frankly, this is something that Christian niceties like, “Love your neighbor,” or “Whatever you did to the least of these, you did to me” – simply won’t cut it.

This is bigger than that. This was evil on display.

And sitting here as Christians, how do we respond?

Seriously — I’m asking you. Because I don’t know.

Yes, we can pray. But offering “thoughts and prayers” on social media just seems empty and completely out of touch.

The backwardness of society is laughable. We’ve got our politicians bickering over wearing masks — and the virtue signaling that brings — while in the streets — on the ground — where people live — there is such a disgusting attack on the dignity of man. On the dignity, value, and sanctity of life.

The value of life that each and every person possesses, regardless of skin color, or religion, or country of origin, or sexual orientation, or stage of life.

The dignity of the human person is something bestowed on us from God — that cannot be disposed of, diminished, or denied.

That dignity of life was completely disregarded for George Floyd, in a brutal act of completely unnecessary and unwarranted violence — which was outside of police protocol and technique, and resulted in death.

So, what are we, as Christians to do?

Say his name.

George Floyd.

Give him the dignity that was stripped from him on that concrete, and use his name when you speak of his injustice.

Do not let his death be swept under the rug, or silenced, or forgotten, or hidden away. Because it matters.

It matters in a big way.

And the only way to make his death not be in vain is to learn from it. To use it as a learning opportunity to do better. To use it as a turning point to resolve to heal divisions brought about by differences in race, religion, background, etc. To use it to forge pathways of respect where we champion one another, and work to heal wounds, and prevent future disunity.

And one way to do that is to listen. Listen to those who have stories to tell. Hear their pain and injustice. Acknowledge what people have gone through. Because though you or I personally may not have experienced the bitter division or horrific persecution based on race, creed, or color — sadly, that is not the case for everyone. And the starting point, if we want to heal together and change the status quo, is to listen to those it has impacted. And hear the reality that is outside of your own.

Because if we want change, we have to have — not only compassion, empathy, and a willing heart — but also an awareness of the truth.

I want to close with one final thought.

It’s really easy to paint with broad strokes. Incredibly easy. And it’s equally as destructive.

It’s really easy to look at this story and instantly write off all cops as racist. As violent. As horrible people. But the fact is, in law enforcement — as with all professions and groups and organizations — there are simply “bad apples.” There are outliers that do not accurately represent the overwhelming majority, and yet make the biggest “splash,” therefore coloring the opinion of the masses.

And this is one of those regrettable instances. All cops are not this cop. This cop made despicable choices that are inexcusable, inhumane and downright evil. And I hope he is held to the full extent of the law and rightly punished for his actions that resulted in the death of George Floyd.

But this cop is not all police officers: men and women who truly want to protect and serve the community, and do so bravely every single day.

So in the protests and demonstrations — which are rightly so — I just hope that we can refrain from damning all those in uniform, and instead keep this focused on this incident.

May God rest the soul of George Floyd. May his loved ones and communities be comforted during this devastating time of injustice and grief. And may our country come together to demand just and fair treatment for all our brothers and sisters, no matter the color of their skin.

“This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

  1. This post hit me right to my soul, it is heartbreaking and just such an evil act, you are so right about that. This police officer was a very evil man and sadly there are evil ones in every profession and it is so sad when their bad deeds stain others who try to really protect us and do good.

My papa (step grandfather) was a very superstitious man, when I was a little girl and something would get lost causing everyone around to get upset looking for it, he would say the devil took it. Now that is a very scary thought for a child, but then he would say " And the devil loves to watch his chaos."

My Papa then told me stories of items missing when he was younger too and then as he got older he learned how to stay calm knowing that eventually he would either find it or move on. He stopped getting worked up.

There are really bad people that walk this earth but we should never allow them to trap us all into pain and chaos. Instead I pray that there are angels that surround the ones that suffer. I pray that we don’t turn on each other, because it is in each other that we will know love. I am with you on not really knowing what to say or do about what we are witnessing everyday as a christian. I have noticed this past year that the closer we get to our election the worse things will become. I have been doing a lot of praying this does not continue. Please stay safe, and thank you so much for this post.

  2. Great post, Caralyn. What this police officer did was inexcusable and he should be tried for murder. But, like you said, he doesn’t represent police everywhere. I personally have three nephews who are Chicago police (one is a detective) and they were all horrified by what happened, but they are also now in greater danger from possible reprisals. I pray for their safety, as well as for the Floyd family.

      1. Ah…of course. More unfounded sensationalism from news media, made to sell advertisement, not report anything accurately or fairly. Not that abuses never happen, they do, but they are the exception (and all you ever hear on the news). It was certainly no “black site!” If you want the facts on Homan Square you can check Chicago media and those who actually investigated the Guardian’s accusations back in 2015.

  6. I am speechless; I do not think there are words to express the depth of this evil. Nothing I can say or anyone can say can fully describe the evil and senselessness of this. I grew up in the Deep South in the 1960’s and I remember to this day sickening displays of racism. Nothing much has changed, obviously. What has changed for the better is that there are cameras and people do speak up now more than in the past. Edmund Burke said “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Evil triumphs when good people do nothing. Thank God we have cell phones that can record and document evil actions so that the world can see it for what it is. This has to stop; it has to. Our society cannot sustain this evil. It just cannot. We need to speak up otherwise evil will triumph. In my mind it isn’t about Christianity or any other religion; it is about human decency. We are all God’s children and we all are loved by Him. George Floyd is God’s child. May God rest his soul.

  7. Sadly this was so horrific. I’m like a lot of others who are just still dumbfounded that this can be so blatantly open wand on camera. I know there are pressures on the job, but there was NO pressure here. Even the laid back attitude of the officer with both of his hands in his own pockets while smiling shows no threat. He could have just kept him restrained in hand cuffs.
It is indeed so sad. I pray for everyone one both sides.
Your post is a blessing, Caralyn. God is talking to me about doing the same thing to make a clear public statement that this is wrong, but I too feel so inadequate.I was just watching a movie called Beyond The Shield. How incredibly timely!
Praying for you too, Caralyn. Hope you are doing well. Me and God love you!

The acts of the officers are heinous and deplorable, but the extremists causing more death and destruction using Floyd as an excuse are just as evil.

  9. There were four cops present, three not being held culpable when they could have told the one on Floyds neck to get off.

Four out of four equals 100% of cops present, none tried to stop the death, all left the scene, only one has been arrested.

This is the Blue Brotherhood that protects itself by looking the other way when another acts out of line.

  10. I do not know what it means to be black. I have experienced only a few glimpses. George Floyd did not deserve this evil injustice: murder. I can only begin to understand the anger producing fires and pillaging. (Which I do not condone either).

But I know their plight goes beyond this event.

Since the 60’s race relations are a little better, but have not meaningfully changed. And it begins at birth. A black baby born in the US is born into a country that does not invest in their future. Blacks face a financially-challenged school system as compared to whites. A lower paying job market, not only in wages but, also, in benefits. Health coverage is lower — immunizations, checkups, dental care. Protection to the coronavirus pandemic is lacking as well. We need a national health care system, which the Republicans have not allowed for decades because their cronies are reaping gargantuan profits from the health system.

Modern economies depend on a 3-tiered system and the lowest paid tier is as much of a slave class as is possible — the less the people in this tier make the more the “tier that reaps all the profit” makes. The lower you keep the lower the higher the riches of the rich. Non-whites face this in ways we white’s are blind to.

I’ll stop. Well, food security is also part of the discussion. I have made my point.

But definitely: George Floyd. Thanks for your timely and well-said post. —Jeff

  11. I live in St Paul. What you’ve heard and seen is not the story. The Peaceful Protests were hijacked by violent thugs using this for their excuse to cause chaos and anarchy. You’ve seen them they wear black and wear a mask prior to the Wuhan Virus, they beat people up for other reason than it makes the news. They have set fires then set fires in the streets blocking traffic ensuring the Minneapolis Fire Dept can’t reach the burning building. These Organized thugs do not care what businesses, homes, or non-profits are destroyed. The whole story on George Floyd isn’t complete, reacting to video bits you’ve seen is not the answer. It isn’t Due Process of the Law it’s vigilanteism and it isn’t welcome. Everyone deserves the same rights even the cops who are at the focus. Please if you want to do something that can help go give blood, donate to crowdfunding that helps people who have lost everything here. Don’t fly here and join the fracas. People in St Paul and Minneapolis are tired of this crap and they are armed. If you can’t think of anything to do, pray.

  13. I I always love reading your insight and getting much from it. I too agree that this atrocity is absolutely daemonic. But what I do ask of Christians at this time is that they would think on a bigger scale of who sets these things up and if they are actually set ups. Because the media for the past decade has been nothing but fabricating details and/or staging them. We are in a very serious spiritual battle and some of the things that are happening are completely put in motion because of our own government because they need people to be at each other‘s throat‘s. It is a huge spirit that runs the White House and it is very much attached to our CIA, FBI, and law-enforcement. Our president has the role of chief executive officer for the military. We are seeing the National Guard be dispelled in California and New York all with the rise of rioting, looting, and pandemic that needs to be maintained with an introduction to martial law. I just think it’s important that we study the Bible because it tells us of the great pestilence, warfare and dissension that we will suffer from. I absolutely believe that as a Christian we are to pray for the enemy’s progress to be slowed and that unity would be found through our ability to recognize that the end day times are put in motion. The best thing we can do is refute what the media wants us to believe and declare the promises of God overcoming power. As we worship in the face of destruction hate and death we overcome the fear and anger that the world displays. Do you agenda is that the government will always be against the people for Jesus said the government is upon his shoulders and even his time with corrupt they scammed, they lied and heavily taxed the people. we are in a modern day kind of taxation to control and brainwash people, those who are coerced to do the dirty crimes and then those who continue the damnation and offense for those who suffered. Eveything is first and foremost spiritual, and discerning the spirits will be necessary from the moment forward, especially now that news has moved from pandemic to racism, watch the messages and themes, and peace will sustain those who pray behind the scenes. Much blessing

  14. That picture has headlined all around the world. Not a good look! Let’s not lose sight of the fact that 90% of the police are good people whose only motive for being in the force is to serve the public regardless of race. Some of them are third generation servers and deserve our support as they too will be grieving over this abuse. So I hope justice deals with this obvious abuse of power quickly so people’s confidence in the system can be slowly restored.

By the twelfth time, or so, we become inured and the shock factor lessens, but the programming starts to work on the audience. We are being played. Violence breeds violence. I did watch something that hit me hard, “victims should not be standing up for the wrongs, we should all be standing up for the victims together” it wasn’t exactly that but close and I am a victim of rape. Even my closest friends that say they support me do not say so out loud. We need to stand up for our neighbors and friends, people we do not know, tell the world we are not afraid and their actions are wrong. Jesus, knew what was about to happen to him. He was not afraid.

It’s not necessarily that they don’t know what else to say but some people say it as a way of saying “I see you”, “I hear you” . As a person that is almost an LCP, I understand that actually paraphrasing a persons words to them let’s them really know you hear them. But not all people understand that and frankly are afraid of saying the wrong thing. A person saying their “thoughts and prayers are coming your way” is better than not acknowledging me at all?! 19. It does start with a conversation. Coming to the table, sitting down, and talking. But, as you stated listening. Communication is happening everywhere, but is anyone listening. Legislative are you listening and making a change to support America where everyone is valued?
This is not a new problem coming out, this has been happening for over 400 years. Every time is comes to the surface, it begins to dwell over until another black male or female is killed. And it has to stop, for both sides to stop fighting. Although, we want to bridge the gap between whites and blacks, but both sides need to be ready to listen and educate each other.
No race should ever have to endure brutality because of the color of their skin, nationality, etc. We are a body of Christ, but some twist and turn the truth of the bible to meet their own agenda. The bible is very clear, when it says We Are All Created in the image of God. We have all been created From Christ. Through Him we have our existence and life.
What gives us the right to dehumanize another human being? It is against God and what He stands for. I mean did we forget Jesus died on the cross for ALL OF US!
I am disturbed that we are a human race fighting each other over color. The only separation their needs to be is clothes articles, not people. It’s plainly and utterly wrong to judge someone on color, when God design them. Are we telling God, “you got it wrong, when you created the black racist”?
I am so hurt by this, because I keep thinking when will it ever be safe for my family in America, when? Everyone on this earth is our Brother and Sister, regardless of their color of skin. Why are dividing what God created. I just don’t want to leave another year having this hang over us, black community. We need change to happen right now.
Empathy, this country needs to learn empathy.
