A Tale of Two Political Nuns

A little known fact about me that may surprise you — aside from the fact that I was the city diving champ for “8-and-unders” back in the ’90s — is that I don’t write my blog posts in advance.

Nope. Maybe that’s a little irresponsible of me, and definitely maybe not the best blogging practice, but I like to publish real-time posts. I like to be current, have my writing reflect the present moment, and mainly, to let the Spirit move me to write what He nudges in my heart.

And today, the latter is most definitely where we’re at.

Obviously, we’re in the political season with the election looming right around the corner. And two-ish weeks ago were the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention.

And I watched both. And there was one thing that caught my attention, through all the fluff, pomp and circumstance on both sides. And that was the stark difference between the two Catholic nuns that spoke at the DNC and RNC.

At the DNC, Sister Simone Campbell – who is also a lawyer – gave the opening prayer…

…and at the RNC, Sister Deirdre Byrne – who is also a doctor, surgeon, global missionary, and retired army colonel – gave a passionate 4-minute speech. (The opening prayer at the RNC was by Cardinal Timothy Dolan).

I watched both of these short clips several times, comparing and contrasting everything from their rhetoric, their demeanor, what they were — or weren’t — wearing, their degree of humility, as well as overall message.

Basically, I was ready to offer some commentary that was, admittedly, probably not the most Christ-like.

And I was stopped dead in my tracks when I read the final sentence of today’s Gospel from Luke 6:38, “For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you.”

Checkmate.

Well played, Jesus. Well played.

But in that same reading today, was another passage that hit to the real message I wanted to actually address, that, though contrasts these two nuns, has nothing to do with them personally, or their physical presentation.

Psalm 139: 13-14 – “Truly you have formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I give you thanks that I am fearfully, wonderfully made.”

I read that, and I knew that Jesus was encouraging me to share what He had put on my heart.

Sister Deirdre Byrne, speaking at the Republican National Convention said flat out, “As a physician, I can say without hesitation: Life begins at conception.” What a powerful, quiet strength this small but mighty woman commanded on that stage. She was humbly dressed in her habit, no makeup. This surgeon and former soldier (she served in the army for 29 years), reminded us how when we first met Jesus in the Bible, He was just an embryo in an unwed mother’s womb, who would then be born nine months later into poverty in a cave.

For me, that is the deciding factor. That is what this election — and every election — is about, and has been about: protecting the most vulnerable, innocent lives in the womb. In 2019 alone, more than 42 million children were killed in the womb, globally.

Forty two million. In 2019 alone.

Speaking about her time serving as a missionary in Haiti, Sudan, Kenya, and Iraq, Sister Byrne continued, “Those refugees all share a common experience. They have all been marginalized, viewed as insignificant, powerless and voiceless. And while we tend to think of the marginalized as living beyond our borders, the truth is the largest marginalized group in the world can be found here in the United States. They are the unborn.”

Those babies are the marginalized. Not given a voice. Seen as insignificant. Not even given a chance at life. The unborn are the largest marginalized group that need to be fought for.

It was such a desolately stark, stark contrast to the prayer offered by Sister Simone Campbell at the Democratic National Convention. Though she prayed for us as a people to have a vision, “grounded in community and care for all, especially the most marginalized,” she never once mentioned the unborn. Forgive my candidness, but it felt so inauthentic, as in the same breath, she chided the current state of this nation, as a place in chaos, needing the breath of life from the “Divine Spirit.”

She never said the word, “Bible,” but rather, “The very first paragraph of the scripture that informs the three Abrahamic traditions tells us: The Divine Spirit breathed over the waters of chaos and brought forth a new creation.“

Maybe I’m just a country bumpkin from Ohio, but that is an extremely “high falootin'” way of saying Genesis: 1. It feels strangely as though she’s desperately trying not to alienate the atheist and agnostic members of the her party base. And this “very first paragraph of the scripture that informs the three Abrahamic traditions” — it was when God brought about light from the darkness, and said “Let there be light.”

You know what is dark and needing light?

The abortion industry. Which is exactly what former Planned Parenthood Clinic Director, Abby Johnson, spoke about in her moving speech at the Republican National Convention.

Sister Campbell’s speech – or rather, prayer – it just felt like it was written by the campaign managers themselves. And it came off that way, too.

And one more thing about Sister Campbell…on August 19, when asked point blank on her position on abortion, she refused to take a stand, saying it was “above her pay grade.” But I digress.

It seems I’ve let my temper get the best of me. Let me reel it in, for one last thing.

I fully appreciate that there are other marginalized groups that also need to, and should be fought for. And I do. Wholeheartedly.

But I also fight for the marginalized group that doesn’t even have a voice. The marginalized group, whose supporters are silenced by the mainstream media. Why is it that all of my pro-life blog articles have been censored by Facebook?

Why is it that during Sister Byrne’s speech at the Republican National Convention, CNN translated all of her uses of the term “pro-life” to “anti-abortion” in their translation for Spanish audiences?

Standing up for the unborn and being pro-life does not mesh with the “politically correct” or “fashionable” agenda of today. An agenda, that is certainly in need of some divine light.

I pray tonight that we all reflect on meeting Jesus in the womb of an unwed mother, who said “yes” to life – Yes to God – Yes when the world around her dictated she say no.

She said yes.

What do you say?

This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

  2. Many orders do not require habits. Sister Campbell and Cardinal Dolan offered prayer, which is appropriate regardless of the venue. Sister Byrne offered an impassioned speech which, while appropriate, necessary and well spoken in terms of taking a stance for life, played the part of politics. I find her words appropriate. I believe, however, that doing so at the convention of a particular political party was politically motivated more than life giving. And to me, that’s rather sad, not something to celebrate. It seems we cannot take a stance on any morally appropriate issue without it being wholly politicized. And that, in itself, made it inappropriate. I am wholly pro-life. I only wish it, as an official lobbying stance, was not political.

  8. Some thoughts. First, let’s make sure we’re talking about the difference between evaluating and condemning. What you sought to do in this article is evaluate. I think Luke 6:38 is more a warning against condemning. There are multiple scriptures that promote judging as an evaluation to know right from wrong, to recognize who you’re dealing with. So no worries for you there.

    The DNC speech. You targeted the use of words to deceive, as we see time and again in abortion defense. If the sister won’t come out and say her belief openly, if a member of a religious order refuses to come down on one side or the other regarding issues about sanctity of life…

    “Danger, Will Robinson!!!”

    High falootin’? Yeah…why use one word or syllable when ten will do?? As for your temper: I didn’t think you really got hot. It was a pretty even-handed article. Analytical. If you are angry, you’re angry about the right things!!! More power to you!

You absolutely right about deceptive language — it’s all about dehumanizing the life in the womb and the pregnancy, because one once you separate it from its humanness, then, aborting the child isn’t as big of a deal. thank you for the encouraging words, Jeff. I do not often speak openly of my political opinions; however, whenever I am “pressed upon” to share my views – specifically where my vote lies – my honest response is, “I vote for babies, bibles, and business.” In that order & the first 2 are not negotiable. 💕 Sister Byrne’s talk was awe-inspiring. It really did feel like she was “talking” to the World – not offering a speech for a candidate. Yes, the Republican party offers the only protection for life plan politically available and obviously she was there in support of votes for this Party; however, her message spoke on the Sanctity of life – and my heart cheered her on with every word she spoke. She knows the greatest hope for the unborn right now lies within the Republican Party & she showed a brave willingness to cross-over into the arena to plead on their (the unborn’s) behalf. My favorite moment & her greatest reminder (to us all,) is the best weapon we have – The Rosary. May we all pray this prayer fervently until November 3rd…if only for the sake of the unborn.   11. For me the most striking character is actually Joseph. In an era where women were stoned to death  for adultery, he had the courage, faith (obeying God’s direction) and humility to stand by his woman, under very difficult circumstances. How much easier would it have been, to have walked away? He must have faced public shame, yet still stood his ground. Perhaps this is the issue. Are we raising young men prepared to take responsibility for their actions or are we teaching them that women and babies are a disposable inconvenience?

  12. Thank you for the thought-provoking post. I’m not a parent and this particular issue is not one I’ve given much thought to. You could say I’m on the fence about it – both sides seem to have some good points and this seems to be a highly complex issue. Just thinking aloud here… Are non-human animals conscious? Science suggests that many of them are, especially mammals. And if they’re conscious, should they also have the same rights as human rights? And yet we kill many animals for food. I’m actually on a carnivore diet myself. It’s beneficial for my health, but did the animals who died so I could eat them not have a right to live? I can see some parallels here with the pro-life debate. I’m not pushing any particular agenda/side here, I’m genuinely enquiring about all this. Thanks again for the post… Really made me examine my own beliefs and why I hold them.

This is also the major source of my prolonged absences however, and I am curious how you manage that. Do you keep a running list of potential topics? Do you ever find that you feel you simply have nothing to write about?

    1. thank you so much Eric! great questions – honestly, i just sit down and say, ok God, what should i write about today? Usually the topics come to me when I’m on my daily jog, or sometimes something I hear in a podcast or at Mass will strike something in me. Or, a situation in life will move something in my heart. it really runs the gammut, but yes, i defintiely have days where I feel empty – and in those days, I typically try to examine what in my life is also feeling “dry.” hope that helped! I am also very impressed with your conviction regarding abortion in your country and I think that is wonderful. In Canada abortion is a protected Charter right alongside a right to life (how absurd is that) and our judges decide what can and can’t happen and have pretty much allowed unrestricted abortions in Canada since the 1980s. You clearly have Christ at the center of your worldview and that is truly unique. You are a true woman of God. 😊

  14. I definitely understand when you get angry because of how some people can easily support the killing of unborn children. I believe that’s righteous anger like God being angry to people who sacrificed their children to Molech. May the people of the US realize the great crime they have legalized and the unimaginable number of unborn children they have killed.

    2. Is it murder when we kill animals? I’m not vegan or anything, but I simply don’t see a bright line separating humans from the rest of the animal kingdom.

      1. i don’t think killing animals for the purpose of food is murder. i don’t think we should be killing willy nilly, but there is a reason God created man over animals. They offer sustenance, sources of clothing and warmth. though i follow a mainly vegan diet with the exception of fish, I don’t believe that “meat is murder” or anything like that.

  18. As a Brit, ones of the things which stands out for me is that this issue seems far more contentious in the US than in almost any other country. I’m curious about why that’s the case. And I wonder how it became so tied to US politics. Again, I don’t think I know of any othercountry where this is the case to such an extent. I wonder why this is. This isn’t a criticism, just something I’m curious about.

  21. I also do my posts cold, and I’m doing this response cold, so bear with me. . .
    As an ordained Catholic deacon, I’m finding that more of my focus is turning toward the faith formation of children, helping to create a generation that will more readily value life itself. And I think the first step is going back to fundamentals, taking Genesis 1:27 and thinking about what it really means to be made in the “image and likeness of God.” That reality carries plenty of weight in terms of personal self-worth, the respect we show others, and the respect we show life itself, especially its creation.
    Through my meager newspaper and blog efforts, I hope to show kids and adults that abortion cannot ever be considered a proper decision, and have it in their heads way before such a decision may even be considered.
    I don’t want this post to be all about me. I just feel we should put more effort in the formation of the generation to come, that they will respect life more than much of current society does. We must keep trying, but I’m just not sure how successful we’ll be fighting the current generation, though I’d love to be wrong about that.

  26. “The scripture that informs the three Abrahamic traditions”–definitely the most PC way to say “the Bible” that I’ve ever heard… feels so contrived it makes me want to laugh. I hadn’t been aware of this particular contrast between the RNC and the DNC, so thanks for this informative post. Regardless of what other issues each party may or may not have right, this issue of the sanctity of all life is certainly one of the most pivotal when it comes to elections and voting.

Before you believe his statistics about how he’s the best President since Lincoln, do a big of research of how much he helped those who needed it the most.   32. I couldn’t watch the DNC first night all the way through. I dont know if you watched clips or the entire thing but I had to shut it down when this one lady was blaming the president for her father’s dead. DNC was extremely negative I felt sick watching it.

    Besides the fact I was able to watch the RNC because it focused mostly on actual issues such as Abortion. It’s not a surprise that the right is against Abortion while the left could care less and its pretty apparent on CNN that they have an agenda rather than properly translating what was said with the RNC.

    If they change the word pro life to ‘anti abortion’ for our Hispanic voters who knows what else they translated wrong because the news media is supposed to be biased against what is being reported or said. Ever notice mainstream news like ABC, CNN never say anything positive about the right, like absolutely nothing. And FOX news is also regarded as false reporting even though it’s mostly a right wing media news source.

    Without paying attention to the nonsense on both sides its pretty clear to me that the left has abandoned much of the values we need to have. The only thing the left offers is an environmental plan which sounds ideal on paper, however the right offers more opportunities in how to reach that goal and its really up to the American people what they want to spend their money on.

    When people are ready they’ll do what’s necessary on their own without government interference. California’s brownouts should be in indication that they are moving too fast. Anyway off topic here but the right has more sensible goals right now, we need a stronger workforce so people can provide for their families and we cant allow those to destroy traditional values.

    On the subject of Abortion I question the need for it even if a woman has been raped (a discussion I had with someone who was for Abortions). Is that really an excuse to let the pregnancy go on then have an abortion? I dont know where people stand on the ‘morning after pill’ or preventing pregnancy if a woman had been violated but not good to wait to see if your pregnant so to need an Abortion.

    I do know that Kamala Harris supports full term Abortions which is basically the worst considering there is already a being people are advocating death to. This is really why we need to get back to values and regardless who is running the show the right has always offered better values.

      1. It’s all about money, power and control with the left. They want $4 trillion for this green deal. How are you going to get the money without hiking gas and electric prices? They want to force people onto electric vehicles (despite the problems with them), change homes to make them more energy efficient, windows, appliances, ect and it can’t happen when people dont have jobs or just scraping by. They don’t even want to explore the idea of coming up with synthetic oils and fuels to make them cleaner that will be more effective in eliminating the need for oil overall so the existing technology can still be used. Their agenda is clear and thats the reason they dont talk about their plans, using a poor old man with Alzheimers to get what they want. Its sickening.

        They care more about illegals and people dying of covid than giving new life a chance. The rest of the country needs to reopen we already have the ability to combat covid 19, if you have a sickness you can stay at home with a doctors note.

        Funny how I’m not scared at all over Covid 19 even when before the masks were put in place, it’s just easier to let God control it. I’m more afraid of these controlling greedy people than the virus.

  35. I’m reminded of this passage from Matt. 7:22, ““Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

    While I am not claiming that Sister Campbell is not saved, Jesus did warn about false prophets.

    We need wisdom more than ever to discern God’s voice among many voices that are preaching at us from both sides.

  36. Great article. Good insight. Good contrasts. I did not watch the DNC. I did watch the RNC. I did watch and was moved by the Catholic Nun speaking at the RNC. I also was moved by Abby Johnson who was-at one time given the inaugural Margaret Sanger award for her industrious work in aborting human babies.
    God changed Abby Johnson! Praise the Lord. God has changed you and I. Praise the Lord. I pray God continue by His Spirit to breath life into the dry bones of those not born again of His Spirit. May this election year be one of a revival of our God: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit upon the humanity of His own fallen creatures-that we may shew forth the praises of His gospel and of His name! May God save the unborn and move upon the hearts of His newly converted people to save the unborn as well. One of my dearest passages is from the Proverbs,
    “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy. – Proverbs 31:8-9
    May the Republican party endeavor with God’s sovereign blessing and with all their might to overturn Roe v. Wade. We pray in Christ’s name, Amen.

    That’s the only way you can reconcile Catholics theology with abortion.

    If you press the pro-abortion issue, you get a mean reaction from the pro-abortionist. That’s because of the spirit behind it.

    It’s like when the bird attacked you outside of the abortion clinic. There was no reason for you to be attacked by a bird.

The guilt and shame we carry for snuffing out the innocent lives of children we help create colors everything else we struggle with in our culture.     Frankly I am not surprised that Facebook chose to censor this article. Anything that seems to question the motives of the political party is basically wrong in their eyes.
    Every time I see good friends of mine fooled by the media into turning a rapist into a hero or a murderer into a savior of women’s rights, it just makes me sad.

    It just seems so sad that both parties would stoop so low as to bring women of God to argue their political debates. Even more sad to see someone sell out their God just to appease an audience (Sister Simone Campbell).

    The country needs prayer at the moment. I guess that’s the best thing that we can do at the moment.

        Now even Netflix is in the news for showing a movie starring children, but yet deemed to be too graphic to be watched by children.

        Completely agree with you though.. There is power in prayer. God hears all, knows all, even before we talk to him about it. So I am confident he has a plan.
