International Women’s Day…Through A Biblical Lens

Well, International Women’s Day was yesterday. And surprise, surprise…I didn’t “celebrate” it.

Not because I don’t love my femininity…just the opposite, in fact.

I didn’t wave flags and send out fanfare because frankly, the whole, “women have less opportunities/women are marginalized/women need to battle the patriarchy“- thing….it’s tired. It’s 2023. There are more women than men in college. Women outnumber men in the US college-educated labor force.

Not only is the narrative worn-out, it’s antiquated.

But I will say this.

As I’ve been watching The Chosen with my fiance, about the life and ministry of Jesus told in episodic format, I’ve been struck by something very powerful.

And that was the role of women in Jesus’ life.

International Women's Day and their #EmbraceEquity theme is...tired. There are more women than men in college, and women outnumber men in the US college-educated labor forced. The narrative is worn out and antiquated. Let's examine through a Biblical lens...#IWD #catholic #feminism #feminist #christianity #jesus #god #bible #femininegenius

Mary the Mother of God, Mary Magdalene, the Woman at the Well, Elizabeth – mother of John the Baptist. Women were pivotal in the life and ministry of Jesus.

A woman brought Jesus into the world. He first declared that He was Messiah to a woman. Women discovered the empty tomb. Women are key players in the story.

And as we are created male and female, we both reflect different aspects of the Father, who has both masculine and feminine traits. Characteristics that can only be understood in relationship with the other. They pair and complement perfectly. The masculine nature, which actively initiates love and seeks to protect, promote and provide for that love pairs perfectly with the feminine genius of receptivity, sensitivity, generosity, and maternity.

Now this does not equate with slaving over the stove all day and churning out babies. The feminine genius is something we take with us wherever we go, and into every field we pursue: whether that is in the corporate world, the operating room, the classroom, the culinary arts, the theater, the home. The feminine genius pours into everything we do: from the White House to the farm house.

Women absolutely deserve to be celebrated, but not at the price of belittling or degrading men.

What do I celebrate?

I celebrate that I can – God-willing – bring children into the world one day.

I celebrate that I one day I will help build a beautiful home, together with my future husband.

I celebrate the wonderful work opportunities I have, and the commercial callback and two auditions I had today.

I celebrate the freedom I have to participate in the political system, and the joy and intellectual excitement I get from staying abreast of political issues and happenings.

I celebrate the family of strong women I come from, including my mother who not only has overcome a stroke, but who has cultivated a beautiful life surrounded by incredible friends and led soul-enriching Bible studies for hundreds of women; my grandmother who came to the United States from Germany; my sisters and aunts who all have the most loving hearts and strong work ethics, and have created such beautiful families.

But mostly, I celebrate the fact that we were all created by God. Created to reflect those feminine aspect of His heart. Created from man’s side to be his partner (and equal). Created as the Crown of Creation. Created to change the world.

International Women’s Day can have it’s “#EmbraceEquity” theme. I will embrace the very nature that makes us who we are: our feminine genius.
