Praying Outside Planned Parenthood: and the Spiritual Warfare that Followed

Well, well, well. Pour yourself a glass of wine, put your feet up and gather ’round, friends, because boy, do I have a story for you tonight.

I did something I’ve never done before, this weekend. In fact, I’m not exactly sure what came over me, but let’s just say I was moved by the Spirit.

I went to Planned Parenthood on Saturday and prayed.

Now, let’s just pause here for a moment. I wasn’t carrying a sign with a bloody baby on it, aggressively accosting people in the name of Jesus. I wasn’t causing a scene with a megaphone. I just got dressed up in a cute outfit and heels, and simply stood across the street, and silently prayed my rosary. By myself. I was the only one there.

As you read last week, I went and saw the phenomenal ProLife movie, Unplanned, and it moved my heart so much that I felt the need to act for the sake of those babies.

And so, Saturday came, and I had just gotten home from a jog. I was taking a shower, and all of a sudden, I just felt this overwhelming need to go and pray at the Planned Parenthood in NYC.

If you didn’t know, Saturdays are notoriously The Day when they do the most abortions at Planned Parenthood. And I knew I had to go.

And it was honestly the most surreal experience.

First of all, it was the first nice Saturday we’ve had since spring began. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky – it was warm. And it was as though everyone and their brother was out from hibernation that afternoon.

When my Uber pulled up to the Planned Parenthood, I was shocked…(but upon second thought, completely not shocked) that the clinic was smack dab in the heart of NYU’s campus. Which made me sick to my stomach.

But it was just so surreal. I was surrounded by brunch go’ers, and SoHo shoppers, and gaggles of bar crawlers – still tipsy from their mimosas, and right in the midst of this luxury lifestyle in Manhattan, is this building of darkness, where babies were being murdered right now, amidst the bustling, jovial life, just right outside.

It was mindblowing, actually. And in the window of one of the exam rooms, was the sign that read “Black Women Matter.” How ironic, given the history of Planned Parenthood. I won’t go into that here — but you should Google the TRUE origin of the organization, and particularly why they chose the locations they did for most – if not all – of their clinics.

But boy – putting myself out there for God that day…two things happened. And the second — let’s just say I was NOT prepared for.

First, the Holy Spirit really showed up for me.

I hadn’t even been on the sidewalk for 15 seconds when all of a sudden I hear…”Caralyn?!

I look around like — God, is that You?

Doing God’s work I see.”

And much to my surprise, I run into this guy I hadn’t seen in – no joke, probably 4 years. We went to the same church, and had been out on a few dates long ago. He was literally, just randomly walking by, on his way to brunch of all things.

Anyway, he totally boosted my confidence, and even gave me a few tips – saying that I actually had to be on the other side of the street, because they “owned” the sidewalk in front of the building.

And if that wasn’t God giving me reassurance — not 30 seconds after he left, another couple – super cute, probably mid twenties – randomly passed me on the street and said “God bless you! We were here earlier today, praying.”

So I was feeling really comforted that God was with me.

But, friends, the day was not all like that. And honestly, I think God did that, because He knew what would come later that day.

I got dirty looks. I got whispers and laughs. I got some crunchy feminists who got up in my face and in the meanest, most spine chilling voices said, “F%@K YOU.

But then, I expected that going in.

I saw the women leaving the clinic, walking gingerly, clutching their lower abdomens. I saw the boyfriends, pacing awkwardly outside. I saw the scared girls go in, and leave with a bag of pills. I saw workers leave at closing time, and mutter mean nothings to me under their breath. I saw the “doctor” leave that night, and I said an extra prayer for the conversion of his heart.

But the hardest thing I saw that day, was the “Quest Diagnostics” truck come and pick up the bio-hazard “waste” from the clinic. Which, if you are unaware — are the bodies of the aborted children. I wanted to ask to pray over the bags they brought out, but I wasn’t fast – or bold – enough. Next time I will.

But here’s where things get real.

I really pissed off Satan that day. Which – I always feel weird about mentioning the “evil one” on here, but look: This is who I am, this is what I believe, and I absolutely believe that spiritual warfare is real. Why? Because not only do I believe that my anorexia was a huge episode of spiritual warfare, but listen to what happened next…

After the day was done, I turned to leave. And I was walking down the street. And I kid you not – I hadn’t even gotten off the block that Planned Parenthood was on, when a bird attacked my face.

In nine years of living in New York City, this has NEVER happened to me before. I was walking, and out of nowhere, this disgusting pigeon nosedived straight at my head. And I was wearing my signature sun hat, because — hello, skincare — and the bird got caught in my hair and then couldn’t fly away because of the brim of my hat. And the bird was flapping and freaking out, and I was screaming and freaking out. Finally it flew off and I was left absolutely shaken up and DISGUSTED that a freaking disease-carrying, repulsive BIRD just practically got in my mouth.

So I’m like standing there, practically in tears, and this whole scene happened right in front of a homeless man, who was sitting on the sidewalk, shaking his cup, asking for money. And he laughs at me, and goes, “HAH! THAT BIRD HAD IT OUT FOR YOU, YOUNG LADY.” You can’t make this stuff up.

I’m shaking at this point. I call my dad in tears and tell him what happened as I’m hailing a cab so I can go home, burn those clothes, drink hand sanitizer and shower away all the diseases that were surely inside every orifice from the neck-up.

And as I’m word-vomiting to my father, the first thing he says to me is, “You know, that was Satan.

And you know what? He was absolutely right.

There is nothing Satan loves more than abortion.

Honestly – think about it. It is the single most divisive issue facing human kind. But more than that – it turns the human — the creation and image of God – against itself. It’s killing innocent children, and it’s devaluing the sanctity of human life. And people are adamantly fighting for it in the name of “women’s rights.”

Satan is having a field day with it. Because once you dehumanize a life – once you “sanitize” the killing of a child in the womb – once you decide that you can determine who lives and who dies, and what constitutes a life worth living, the slope becomes slippery and treacherous, and leads straight into Satan’s open arms.

And you best believe that he’s going to send flames, arrows, – even birds – at anyone who stands in his way.

And I experienced that first hand.

But that is ALL THE MORE reason to continue to stand in the gap for those babies. And that just tells me that I’m doing something right.

At the end of our lives, we’re going to have to face our Creator. And I pray that when I do, after I stand accountable for all the despicable and deplorable crap I have done in my life, I can at least say that I fought for the smallest and most helpless of His children.

  2. Satan hates lives God makes because he is doomed to hell by his bad choices and wants to kill as many of us as he can on his way to hell. He knows God loves each and everyone of us that He created so lovingly. As such Satan wants to destroy us. He is evil. So this whole spiritual warfare is going on all the time. We saved ones have guardian angels provided by God to protect us. We are protected not from all distress or tests of our devotion but from undergoing more than we can handle with God. And when a person attacks us, the fight is very real but based wholly on the spiritual battle. When leaders and politicians are evil, like those who support killing babies, it is the idea and influence of demonic principalities that initiated it. When kings are evil and keep all money and aid for the people and starve them to death in the process, it is initiated by demonic powers of this world’s darkness. “Our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the principalities and powers of this world’s darkness.” But the thing to remember is that God is still the Victor, He had won and is still bigger. Prayer still works. And the question is not who will win and who is stronger because Satan is a created being and lost the second he decided to rebel with pride and try to be in charge. He is toast. The question is how many people will Satan fool and destroy in eternal hell with him? I keep praying God’s desire wins out so His loved people will be saved by Jesus. I blog about it, talk about it to whoever, but prayer with faith is unlocking the power of God into our requests and He answers those. People may fight Him but He lovingly urges them on. I love that you bravely went there and prayed. I love that God has you standing in the gap for those precious lives. I love that He wisely has you there for such a time as this. Please keep obeying Jesus. Love you as always! So proud of you! Hugs!XO😄❤

  4. This post gave me food for thought. I have also experienced some pretty similar spiritual attacks. They can leave us feeling pretty yeuch(even if they do not involve bird attacks)
I have been left badly shaken too but God often brings something or somebody along to comfort us, when we need it.

I watch what happens afterwards. God in his own time, shows who is boss.

  5. You know I think highly of you BBB.

I definitely can see how the enemy knew beforehand the likelyhood of how you would perceive the occurence and he played off of it.

We all have our things, the things we deteste, or find apprehensible, when maybe they aren’t. Its all on how we choose to look at it.

I’m not speaking about abortion or planned parenthood.

I am speaking about how you chose to respond to the bird. He used your weakness against you and amplified it.

Take a moment to revisit your words later.. The way you describe the bird. God made that bird. God doesn’t make repulsive disgusting things. Its our opinions that are.

I thank God for the birds every day. They set examples to humans how we should wake up and worship.

I know you were focusing on spiritual warfare, and the atrocities going on.. But I did feel the need to mention this. Perhaps next time, it wont be so disgusting at all.. And youll hold tour cool. Realizing it was a cheap ploy. And that He is going to have to bring A army of birds, next time.. Better yet, next time.. It wont even bother you..you will roll with the punches and not be rattled. Bring it! I’m right here… Bring all the birds you want. And I’ll feed em to you for breakfast, enemy. Amen.

  8. It is absolutely happening. My husband always says “I only sound crazy until it happens to you”. We have long conversations about the battle playing out right in front of us and it breaks our hearts. Members in our families are turning against each other because some hate our new president while others don’t. Seems like Hate is trending in some circles and it has become additive. Then there is the ugliness of narcissism and no gratitude in a world that seems to be more of a me mentality type of world. Love opens our eyes to the ugliness of hate and hate only blinds. There seem to be a lot of sad and broken people out in the world who’s hearts are filled with so much hate, and the only thing I know to do is pray for them. The devils best tool is social media and those beautiful little devices that everyone carries with them now, always looking down and no longer looking up into the eyes of other human beings.

  9. Caralyn, this is the most beautiful post I’ve read in a long while. I even shared it with my teenager. I admire you so much! Just this past weekend was my Church’s General Conference where we, as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, come together to listen to our prophet and apostles speak. And one spoke of the need for us to be a voice for the unborn. And that’s just what you were on Saturday, Caralyn, a voice for the unborn. Abortion is so evil and morally wrong. It makes me heartsick. Yes, spiritual warfare is real. We’ve been in an ongoing war with Lucifer and his army since we made the choice to embrace Jesus as our Savior. I know you are blessing lives by how you choose to live yours.

  10. Wow, your post really resonated with me! Last Wednesday, on the spur of the moment, I dropped by our local Planned Parenthood because I felt an overwhelming urge to pray there. I met a woman who normally prays there earlier in the day but had a change of plans. It was a divine appointment!! So encouraging!

She was praying the rosary, and it was my first time to pray the rosary with someone else, instead of by myself. After that, we prayed some additional prayers, including praying specifically for a young pregnant woman with cancer.

I’ve now been invited to come join a group that prays there four mornings each week.

My experience was so encouraging and inspiring — but later in the day I was hit with some really difficult emotions. At first I didn’t connect the two. Even after I did, it was hard to get out of that funk.

But thank goodness I wasn’t attacked by a bird!!!

With “feminists” who claim that an unborn baby is not even its own person and that the woman has a right to murder it dominating the both social media and the media, it’s hard to stand against it and I really admire you, and the people who supported you, for doing that.

I was actually born at 26 weeks, just above the legal limit for abortion, and so it’s an issue that really angers me as I can say first hand that those babies who are being killed are alive. Thank you for praying and I hope it’s made a difference to someone, somewhere.

  16. It was very brave what you did my friend! I support doing what you think is right even if it means standing alone. However I feel there are so many things wrong with this blog and so many things that are right. I am anti abortion but I’m pro you can’t tell a woman what to do with her body. Especially when her decision has no personal affect on you. Its between her and God. I don’t think at all having abortions is the devils work. If a woman get pregnant and the doctor tells her she will die if she has the baby. Should she just opt to die so her baby can live? Is that the devil’s work? People are quick to tell woman not to have an abortion and judge them when they don’t offer all the things that come with raising children. Our current administration is trying to get rid of Obamacare, Medicaid, and Medicare. Not to mention defund planned parenthood that offers free free services for preventing pregnancy. Which is insane. They don’t want women to have abortions but they also want to stop funding the services to prevent it from happening.

I love babies and children! I don’t support 3rd term abortion or abortion at all but taking away someone’s right to choose is not okay. Especially when it has no affect on my life.

Only God gets to make that call and I will not be apart of making someone feel bad for something they did for what is best for their life. Which I’m sure they will think about for the rest of their life!

    Like

    1. Hi Lane, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and your heart on this emotional issue and for joining the conversation! I definitely agree that we have no place to judge – we are called to love. Period. And you’re absolutely correct: all human beings have rights that must be protected. A woman has the right to protect her own body. And her child in the womb also has rights that must be protected, namely the right to continue life. To impose death on another individual, in my opinion, is a right that absolutely no one possesses. But that is just my opinion. I respect that other people do not feel the same. And I think having open dialogue is important! I am absolutely with you: it is not our place to judge or make anyone feel bad. We are called to love oneanother. Not judge or condemn. Just love. And especially when women are in the aftermath of an abortion, they need all the love and support and compassion. Thank you again for sharing your heart on this. Big hugs to you, Lane.

In reading all these wonderful comments I see God’s Words written a few times and once a Scripture reference is even mentioned. In my Christian roots, we believe that quoting Scripture has great power, because it is God’s Truths and Satan cannot abide where the Light of God’s Truths are spoken. So, YES, because I believe the Holy Bible is God’s Holy Word, I believe that spiritual warfare is real. Ephesians Chapter 6 clearly tells us that it is, particularly verse 12:

    About Christian Warfare: Ephesians 6:10-18

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints

When we fill our hearts and minds with memorized Scripture (the Truth, vs 14), then we have a super powerful and effective tool (a mighty sword, vs 17) with which to fend off the devil and defeat him!

Caralyn, I was taught that when we are stepping out into spiritual battle, we should tell a “prayer warrior” or someone we know that has strong praying skills, and ask them to “cover” us in prayer as we step into the spiritual battle. I hope you will do this to protect yourself and to strengthen the power your prayers will have. And if you need someone to cover you, please please please, you can call upon me! I would be honored to pray for you!
Love and hugs back to you, sweet God’s Girl ❤

  30. I’ve not been F-bombed that much in life, but got plenty of it when I took place in a pro-life prayer witness. The hate is incredible, and in one case it came from a car driving by – the guy’s (yes, it was a guy) was… what? Distorted? There was something beyond anger, beyond normal humanity that made his features bizarre.

There is spiritual warfare – make sure to have folks praying for you while you witness, even if they can’t be there. And if folks can be with you, that’s a plus. As a Roman Catholic, you might consider having the Mass said for you on the day you go.

Thank you for your witness. Yes, you hurt Satan’s wittle feewings and he acts out. But remember Romans 16:19-20, “For while your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, I want you to be wise as to what is good, and simple as to what is evil; then the God of peace will quickly crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.”

  31. Yes, Caralyn, spiritual warfare is real. Now that you know it you will prepare yourself for it and know why, from experience, that Jesus is always watching over His children. You have written many articles that made me realize you are a very special young lady in the hands of God. But never more so than what you posted here. May I say? I am very, very proud of you! Hugs and love to you, too!

But God bless you for fighting this. More women need to stand up, because they say they do this “for women”

  33. Thank you so much for sharing. This is not only a spiritual war, it’s a reflection of the culture of death that permeates our society.
I remember when abortion was legalized in the US. I don’t think anyone with rational thinking and faith imagined how many innocent lives would be ended by this heinous industry. And that is what it truly is to those who take part in this slaughter of innocent lives. And now, assisted suicide is gaining momentum, just as abortion has since it was legalized.

    1. Thank you so much friend – you’re so right about that — we are truly living in a culture of death. It is so sad. Hugs and love xox

      1. Most definitely. It is sad. Especially when the conscience is dulled and these practices are viewed an acceptable way to eliminate unwanted children, the chronically ill and aging adults. This is why it is so important for your generation to be a voice for the innocent and vulnerable members of society. Many of you were raised with a conscience and pro life beliefs. In addition to your faith. And for that I praise God! I accidentally hit the send button before I added this. Hugs and love xox Mary

  35. God bless you Caralyn! You always amaze you. I went and saw the movie in upstate New York, and theater was packed. There were people of all ages and some were crying. I shed some tears throughout. I never new abortion was really like that… it’s crazy how much we are deceived as a society. I feel like no one really knows what an abortion is like until they- god forbid- go through one. The movie really opened up my eyes, to the deception and lies we are fed. It is not about “women’s right” and it makes me sick that the argument is justified based on that. Human life is so precious- all life is.. but it seems no one values life anymore. Someday Jesus will be back though and yes, we will answer to Him. God bless you, girl. Always love you 💛

    1. Hi Laura Aleena! Thank you so much for your support. That’s so great that the theater was full! Wasn’t it just so incredibly powerful? I mean — wow. And you’re so right — society is SO deceived. Even the word itself is a sanitization of what it actually is. sigh We’ve just gotta keep praying! hugs ox

  36. One thing I have learned through the years is that the devil only fights back if he’s afraid…afraid of what you are and what you can accomplish against him so I would say that you are definitely destined to cause him some serious harm!!

  37. Be the voice for the living hurt by the mistakes they made. The unborn, or dead is not our concern. Leave that to God. Your conscience must stay rooted to existence that you can relate. Pass no judgement on those women who had aborted, instead be there for them to share their pain. Healing begins when we nurture the emotion with love. When mistakes are realised they will not be repeated, and God would be pleased.

    1. We should absolutely not pass judgement. And I wasn’t. We are called to only love people. Not judge. Not condemn. Only love. That is our job. WHen i was there, I made it a point to look each person that came in or went out of the clinic in the eye, and give them a warm smile with genuine love and compassion in my eyes. THanks David.

  38. This may be a tad strange, but I’m going to issue a challenge.

To anyone who reads these posts, and who supports the views of this fabulous young lady of God. Anyone who is close to where she lives. Go support her. In person. Arrange to go with her. Particularly if you know her already. Make time to support her – not only in prayer, but in person. Next time she goes to pray at PP, go along. Go together.

  39. Wow! You are a brave young soldier. God has a great plan for your life. Spiritual warfare exists and is powerful. However, my advise to you is that the next time, you take someone with you who are equally committed. One can chase a thousand but two people ten thousand. Plus with another person you can cover each other against attack. As you said, Satan doesn’t like what you are doing and so he immediately launched an unexpected attack on you. But, God is greater and He will protect you. God bless you my dear.

  40. Before you go again–>get ‘prayed up!’. If you can fast, fast. Even if it is a lunch everyday and spend that time in the Bible reading scriptures for protection. Ephesians 6:10-18 is excellent scripture to be ‘prayed up’ on. And read the scripture OUT LOUD, so the enemy hears you and your atmosphere is prepared.

Memorize James 4:7 “Submit to the Lord, resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” and while you are walking and praying, say it out loud every now and then. If that bird (or any demon) attacks you again. All you need to say is “Jesus”. The enemy has to flee. (PS: there is more teachings Biblically about resisting. Let me know if you need more fuel)

We had an attack one time, after a group of us were praying for someone, we got home and as we walked in the door–for no reason at all…the stereo started screaching out this horrible noise. Ummmm, the power was off when we walked too. Yeah, so weird. And it freaks you out!!! I walked over and shut it off and rebuked it in Jesus name. Not to say it didn’t startle me. But, I know what it looks like and feels like.

I’m happy to send you my cell# too. Next time you go, I will pray for you via text 1st and be praying while you are there. Good to have a few others too. Prayer warriors in your court!

God bless you BBB for what you are doing!!! Stay bold! Perservere!
