UNITY…OR ELSE

I pledge to be a President who seeks not to divide, but to unify. The Bible tells us that to everything there is a season — a time to build, a time to reap, a time to sow. And a time to heal. This is the time to heal in America.” – Joe Biden 11/7/2020

Saturday afternoon in New York. A certain gentleman and I were out on a bike ride. It was a simply gorgeous day — 74 degrees, partly sunny. One of those days that feels like it should be in early September, rather than the second week of November.

And while we were out, all of a sudden, all the car horns on the Upper East Side start honking — drivers just laying on their horns. And people came pouring out of their apartments onto the sidewalks and streets: cheering, yelling, chanting. Apartment windows flung open and tenants leaned out, banging on pot and pans. And in that moment, all of Manhattan erupted in a frenzy: “GO BIDEN!!” But truthfully, what I heard more was, “F#*% TRUMP!”

Strangers on the street, literally high fiving, giving each other thumbs up, cheering in glee: “Thank God he’s gone!” For the last eight months during the pandemic, New Yorkers have been avoiding eye contact and shunning interactions for fear of contracting COVID-19, but in that moment, everyone was on the same winning, anti-Trump team: Biden’s.

It was surreal.

And to be honest, it was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. Despite the fact that the driving force behind the camaraderie was a shared hatred of one President Donald Trump, the tangible spirit of “oneness” was overwhelmingly inspiring. There was an air of electricity and joy flowing through NYC that I have never experienced in all of the nine years I’ve lived here.

It was a wonder to behold.

Later that night, as my friends and I ate celebratory pizza and watched Joe’s (premature) acceptance speech, I found myself fixated on the rhetoric of his words. Particularly about unity.

That was the buzzword of the night. Unity. We’re not red states, we’re not blue states, we’re the United States.

And looking around at streets full of boarded up shops, and seeing people high fiving with “F-Trump,” and listening to the righteous indignation from blatantly biased anchors on cable news organizations — that literally cut off Donald Trump mid-speech, claiming he was spewing “lies” — it made me honestly question…what does Unity mean?

Or rather, what do they think “unity” means?

Unity…

Here you’ve got AOC’s terrifyingly radical tweet, calling to blacklist anyone who worked for, or supported the Trump Campaign, sparking the Trump Accountability Project. I guess unity means doxing anyone with differing political beliefs.

Or — how about this personal incident. My prolife post from last Thursday: “Sometimes We Have to Hit Rock Bottom” – where I expressed my deep concern over the pro-abortion reality of a Biden/Harris administration — was censored on Facebook. This is my fifth pro-life article that was censored on Facebook. FIFTH. So I guess, unity also means silencing any voices that hold differing view points or beliefs. Just add me to the list with the Washington Post.

It’s beginning to feel like, unity…or else.

Unity — on it’s face, it’s exactly what the country needs. After eight months of devastation from the Coronavirus, and the summer of civil unrest, and the demonization of political opposites here during election season, America really does need a “time to heal” — as Biden so angelically put it in his speech — accepting the media’s proclamation as President Elect.

Which is absolutely true. Walking around NYC post-announcement this weekend, it was a phenomenal experience. People had a joyful energy. Strangers were kind. Exuberant, even. There was love in the air. And a lightness.

Biden closed his speech last night quoting from the Bible…a bold move coming from a self proclaimed “Catholic” that not only supports abortion, but late-term abortion: up until the moment of birth.

He quoted from the third chapter of Ecclesiastes: “The Bible tells us that to everything there is a season — a time to build, a time to reap, a time to sow. And a time to heal. This is the time to heal in America.

Which is a very very interesting choice for this pro-choice President. Because read just a few verses later, beyond the quippy one-liner that sounds really good in a speech, and you will come across this little doosey:

God will bring into judgment
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time to judge every deed.”
Eccl. 3:17

I will certainly be held accountable for all the horrible things I have done in my past. Hello, anorexia is full of lying and manipulation and deception, and self-destruction. And I am guilty of all of it.

And like me, so will Joe, and Kamala, and every single one of us. We will all be called to account for every deed we did, said, stood for — or voted — for.

Image: Life on the Ballot

So. Unity.

Where does this leave us?

It is my deepest prayer that in these coming weeks — where things are surely going to get more interesting, election-wise — that we may come to appreciate that “unity” does not mean steam rolling everyone into submission and blacklisting or silencing any dissenting voices. But rather, a true, earnest spirit of cooperation. Where we can compromise. Where a difference of opinion will result in conversation, rather than riots and protests that require businesses to literally board up their windows and doors.

Unity – where we can all feel seen, and heard, valued, and protected — especially the most marginalized and vulnerable.

And this is the last thing: Also in this Ecclesiastes chapter that Biden pulled from, in verse 11, we are reminded that “[God] has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart…”

Therefore, let us remember that God is in control, and will work everything for good in its time. But that perhaps, we can unify with our hearts set on eternity.

And perhaps, unity can be found in our efforts to help one another on our walk with Christ, towards eternity.

That we can spur each other along in our quest for goodness, for holiness, for rightness with God. So that when we do come face to face with our Creator to be judged, He can look at us and say, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant.’

“This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

  1. And I can’t but help to wonder why he quoted from the Bible twice in one day, that I had seen, while planning to kill God-ordained lives in the womb. It is akin to mass murdering people in gas chambers all week and being an elder in church on Sunday. What is the meaning of God and the Bible to him, really? I can’t but help seeing trouble down the road.

      1. I am vociferously pro-life. A very militant Buddhist vegan friend insisted our cat be spayed – to find during the op that the poor animal was far pregnant. (Same friend that goes about preacging that cruelty begins with a fork but she didn’t mind doing it to a cat and she’s an animal rights activist of note,) After the op, the little critter almost went insane searching for her babies and eventually mothererd her neutered friend. The cat’s pain and anxiety was too much to bear and that is where I drew the line. No abortionist will ever “endure” my respect. Love from Cape Town.

The new Pharaoh literally erased all records on the temple walls of the previous dynasty. To quote the same book – Ecclesiastes, nothing new under the sun. 😉

I honestly think Americans have forgotten what is written plainly on our coins. one side says One Nation Under God. The other side says E pluribus unum – out of many, one. It’s not steamrollering over opposition, but genuine unity.

The next time you pick up a quarter, stop and thank God for our country.

  6. It’s weird that you seem to have been targeted by Facebook.
Now, as for unity…YES! It’s high time. I think it’s hard to deny that the last four years have been a daily exercise in divisiveness. That people are happy to return to normal politics from the experiment of this outsider administration.
I think the lesson to acknowledge as we move forward is that unity in government needs (just my opinion, here, I’m no Founding Father) to mean America is a place for everyone to live with a reasonable expectation of equality and personal freedom. Living by a biblical doctrine is a choice that needs to be protected for you and any others that choose that lifestyle. It’s not a lifestyle to be legislated and mandated for others.
If we can bear that in mind, then I think we can find unity. If we allow ourselves to return to something like DJT’s or the Religious Right’s or Tea Party’s politics, then I think we can reflect of the myriad protests over the last for years to learn that we won’t be living in unity on any widespread scale.
I love that you got to experience the NYC jubilation first hand! Our celebrations here in Portland were emotional, but smaller. I can’t imagine what it was like there. I imagine history will put it in the same class of public celebration as the end of WWII!

We can do the world a great service by encouraging Far Left and Far Right to come to the center and truly listen to each other. Above all, believers must never lose hope that unity is possible.
Emotions from the election will die down; then the true work begins. May we all remain willing to do our part for the greater good. Hugs and love– Mike

  8. What would you have done if someone wanted to high-five you while yelling “F*** Trump?” As a matter of practical self-defense, I hope you would give the high-five back, smile, and walk away. Saying that you voted for Trump could have been dangerous during that display of us vs. them “unity!” I know it was inspiring to see so many people on the same page, but that description gave me chills. I’d have felt like a closet Jew walking around at a Nazi rally.

After posting a couple fluff pieces over the weekend to avoid the election for a few days, I drafted something about the election for my Wednesday article. It’s based on Romans 13 and concludes that governments are instituted by God for His purposes. Unfortunately, godless Babylon served His purposes for Judah and then was destroyed. What’s in store for the USA when God ordains a government led by a complicit baby killer?

Sigh. And this is why I should have avoided the topic… But I am glad you are well and enjoying your gentlemen! You remain in my prayers! As always, Jeff

  9. Thank you for posting this. I am sad. My daughter-in-law posted this weekend that Biden went to mass and Trump played golf. This post was for her Christian family members—like see, he goes to church, not your guy. And my heart broke. It’s not about”going to church.” You can stand in a garage all you want—it still will not make you a car! I’m afraid what is going to happen to a country and a people who love God, honor life from the time of conception, and believe in the 1st amendment. I do believe it will be “unity” if we only say the right thing (their thing). I pray this not be true. I do know that God is sovereign. I just don’t know the lesson he is giving us. I do know that regardless of what happens, Jesus is still on the throne! ❤️

  10. For the last 4 years the president was given no quarter. People who supported him were ridiculed, mocked, cancelled and sometimes worse. Now many of those same people are celebrating the victory of a man who has spent nearly 50 years in Washington D.C. doing what exactly, no one can really articulate. It was, again, a choice between horrible and very bad. It really doesnt matter what side of the isle you fall on politically, national politics have been broken in the U.S. for literally decades.

What’s new now is how its evolved in to a cultural war. We will see in the coming weeks months and years if the winning side enacts grace or is punitive. As a pagan and a libertarian I see what is happening and I see this as one of the most dangerous times in our history, certainly in my life. Trump is now the key to the whole thing, with a few words he can send his 70 million (yes 70 million people voted for him) into a frenzy. Washington is broken, it was before Trump it was before I was born, its no longer for the people by the people its now for the “right people” and woe unto you if you didnt chose the correct side.

Thank you for writing this post. Your description of the atmosphere in New York is great news.

I hope this is the start of a good four years for the US.

Re: the abortion argument, I’d like to understand the pro-life position better. It’s often linked to faith and it’s a white-hot poker of an issue where few people are willing to sit and discuss it calmly and clearly. Would you be willing to talk?

“There is no darkness or deep shadow Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves” Job 34:22.

Offering our prayers to God is much needed to open the hearts and minds to “Truth” – not subjective phenomenological (t)ruth, but God’s Truth (if we walk with Christ, we know what is right and what is wrong. The Holy Spirit in us = awareness. With Christ within us, Truth is intrinsic.

Subjective truth (is all about “me”, it’s a self absorbed reality that has no sense of Godly love for the “other” ). Unfortunately this is now the mainstay and perpetuated by mainstream media and social media platforms only have one narrative. This is what is brainwashing/conditioning young minds. Critical thinking – what’s that? In a way we are at fault too with our “like” and “cancel” culture. I know I’m also guilty being a participant in social media – Instagram, FB, Twitter etc. I have since cancelled Netflix, FB, Twitter, and deleted all mainstream news apps from my phone.

  14. Love this, Caralyn! Unity is so desperately needed in this country but it needs to be true unity, and that calls for seeing others the way Paul said we should in his letter to the Philippians: Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. (Philippians 2:3-4) Unfortunately, words like unity and tolerance have a very different, self-centered meaning in our society than they used to. But we need to keep praying for true unity. It’s not what’s best for the party but what’s best for the country. Sadly, we voters are to blame. We’ve allowed politics to become paramount so that now we have spoiled children — Senate Majority Leader, Speaker of the House, Senate Minority Leader, etc. — governing the country. Many of the problems facing this country could be addressed through discussion and compromise; instead, our spoiled children want things their way or they’ll take their ball and go home. What a sad state of affairs.

  17. Clearly healing within a world of divisiveness will take many lifetimes to achieve. However in a broader context mainly the Yugas of Hindu texts, we are in last 5 years of the Ascending Kali Yuga which began 2,200 years ago (2700 years time span in total) with a 300 year cusp or buffer period. The Descending Kali Yuga began in 6676 BCE. The Kali Yugas are the bottom of this grand cycle 0f 24,000 years. Kali is the Goddess of death and destruction in order to start again. The Kali Yugas are defined by business and money and are the most divisive of all the yugas. The Ascending Kali Yuga ends in 2025 (5 years from now and if followed by a 300 year buffer or cusp period while the Dwapara Yuga takes root – a moral age).

Regarding Unity. I defend the right of anyone here to say what they believe as long as it doesn’t engage in character assignation of another. I confronted someone on a FB post who was calling people “stupid” for supporting Trump and claimed they were raised by “f#2king narrow minded parents” while at the same time were calling for respect of others. I attempted to show that by using inflammatory rhetoric was not a sign of respect of those that disagree even if it was done around people who in this particular NYC bubble agree. How is calling someone “stupid” and claiming that they were raised by narrow-minded parents display respect? They did not respond to my comment.

I support a woman’s right to choose whether or not they want to have a child. As a healer I don’t recommend abortion. I recommend that the pregnant woman send the spirit of the child back to the light asking him, her or it to kindly return to the Oneness or God. When this happens there is a miscarriage. Conversely I have advised couples who are having difficulty conceiving whether the woman has had an abortion. If the answer is yes I encourage the woman and/or the couple to do a ritual to release the spirit of the child back to the light. This makes a way for women to have the baby they choose to have.

For those of you who are pro-choice I applaud your right to speak out, because that is your right. And I stand by it. What I did not care for is being told I am going to hell because I advocate conscious miscarriage.

My entire life has been towards healing and that has not changed.

  18. It’s funny that the call for unity comes from the party that spent the last four years not accepting the 2016 election. Four years of “Not my president”, four years of… well the list would take all night to write. Their idea of unity is a lot like their idea of non-partisanship which is “do what we tell you.” In the final analysis, should Trumps legal challenges fail, then we must move on. We pray for those in office and we preach the gospel while we still can.

  19. Unity can go both ways. Jesus said “A house divided against itself will not stand.” This means God’s side or the enemy’s side. It makes it very clear there are only two sides, difficult to take seriously in a gray world. We need to be united under Christ. That means living like He says together, getting the 10 commandments back in public places, ending abortion/murder, punishing those who do wrong, etc. Those things are against the platform of those socialists prematurely calling themselves chosen by God to rule. It would seem that would be a judgment against us, not worthy of celebration. God is not finished yet, however. I believe this is a warning and we need to pray diligently. Love your heart for life. Most people who do not win have trouble accepting the loss, but in time they do accept reality. Not sure this will happen this time. Before worrying about all the bad things the Republicans have said the Dems will do, how about waiting to see if there was any truth to the propaganda. 27. This was so good, Caralyn! I think there was a lot of positivity and truth in Biden’s speech that I would mostly agree with–the most important thing is whether he will carry those goals out in a manner that would truly benefit and unify our country rather than in a way that only restricts our freedoms and brings the gavel down on people who don’t fit into what they see as their image of “unity.” I’m hoping and praying it won’t turn into a “tolerance for all except people who don’t agree with me” kinda thing. Great post. 🙂

There is no unity until the truth comes out. And I feel like it will shock, and I fear violence may result. I do believe the President is doing everything he can to mitigate this possibility as much as possible. The corruption runs deep.

    Blessings!

…hey, I know what you’re thinking…out of everything you wrote, THAT is what I chose to focus on?!? But yeah, this statement you wrote troubled me and I needed to make sure you understand something. If you already know this and I’m reading too much into it please forgive me, but my heart needed to say these words to you…

…the beauty of being a new creation in Christ is knowing that we are washed by His blood. True repentance is a gift which allows us a clean slate every time we mess up. We can get up, brush ourselves off and never look back (okay, that was a poor paraphrase of Paul -Philippians 3:13- but he of all people sure did know about sin!). So, all those “horrible things” we have done are forgiven and the Lord remembers them not; as far as the east is from the west is how far our transgressions are removed from us. We don’t have to worry about being “held accountable” because Jesus already paid the price! Listen, I’m real good at beating myself up at times over past sins, but I know that’s the enemy just trying to prevent me from living in this freedom. (They don’t call him ‘the accuser’ for nothin’!) If you are born again you are cleansed, washed, sanctified and right with God for ALL time. You have been sealed with the Holy Spirit. As we walk in the light the blood of Jesus cleanses us now AND CONTINUALLY of ALL sin. Praise Jesus!

What the enemy really hates for us to know is WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST; we are no longer condemned!
“. . . Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death.” -Romans 8:1-2

As hard as we try we will never be perfect in this life. Jesus knows this. That’s why He became the final, perfect sacrifice for all. He’s not keeping a list of all your wrongs. When He looks at you He doesn’t see the bad things you’ve done because you are forgiven. He sees your heart. He sees YOU, sweet Caralyn, His precious, beloved child whom He loves and adores. Yes, we all face judgement, but as children of the Living God our judgments will not be based on the bad…only the good; however little or great. Rewards await you in eternity.

    God bless you!

  30. We need to wake up.

“But rather, a true, earnest spirit of cooperation. Where we can compromise. ”

There is no unity between light and darkness.
    They travel in different directions.

Unity sounds wonderful. Accepting and loving everyone.

And so many believers fall victim to this bullshit.

We dont compromise with Gods laws. We dont pray to God and ask Him if He can make exceptions to His rules. I am not stupid enough to do such a thing. Its His way..or its the highway.

Its like either u stole the candy bar or you didnt. You didnt halfway steal it. People stealing snickers and trying to call them twix.

    Its not happening.

Call for unity all you what. But we aren’t celebrating men who marry men. Nor women who marry women. We aren’t celebrating doing things are way.

Like it or not: there is TWO PILES OF PEOPLE.

AND THERE IS NO UNITY BETWEEN THEM.

    Those who shall inherit hell.
    Those who shall inherit heaven.

Now keep talking about unity…while you try to unify those.

  33. Sadly this country and neither Biden nor Trump will achieve this. Pence maybe, but the real problem is that people are so divided on different issues. In reality the problems in the U.S. is overwhelming to the point where its going to take decades to solve and we are arguing over what should be solved.

As for Biden winning the presidency he didn’t win the race the mainstream media declared him the winner, it was all for show.

You can’t really win the election if you are being investigated for election fraud. Whether it did happen or not the swing states had numbers going for Biden in minutes, all overnight. They thought no one would pay attention, but as usual they deny it and claim it was clerical errors. I would just be careful within the next several weeks as it could get messy in the big cities if Bidens presidency gets disqualified. Even worse if Trump stays in office these people celebrating will most likely riot so I pray there will be law and order present when the verdict results come in. The suburbs will need to be ready as well.

Now I must add that I still feel a dark cloud hanging overhead. That I think will remain until Trump is out of the white house. Another four years would have been the end of America as we know it in my opinion.

Happy that you’re feeling the old vibe returning to New York. The media always seem to broadcast the worst, but I was worried about your safety at times. There were a few very tough months in New York.

However, as we Christian’s shoukd never forget.. God is still on the throne and no one will over rule him. If God allows something (even if it’s not good) it is because he has a purpose. God bless you and keep up the writing concerning abortion… we need to keep speaking against this. Amen

  36. It great to see that people can be so united, but disheartening to see what unites them.
Listening to Biden’s speech was gut-wrenching for me because I see friends buying into the Democrat view; so blinded to the fact that they are being manipulated, they can’t even accept the evidence placed in front of them.
This is the grip of what social media, the mainstream media has on people. They are literally brainwashed – and dare not think for themselves. Yet again Hollywood’s elite weigh in with their self absorbed opinions. Are you so bought by your profession, that you don’t dare to think for yourself.

The one thing that most people refuse to see is that Trump literally exposed the political elite on both sides of the aisle; for what they truly are and yet the people are so brainwashed that they want it back in their hands – fooled into thinking that these people actually care about the America and its people. They don’t.

America is on the verge of becoming the socialist paradise that the Democrats want it to be and guess what, the masses are already fooled and will only realize their folly, when its too late.

Watch Biden talk about coming together and being united was so hard, especially after all that him and his party did to divide the country. He called for Republicans and Trump supporters to give him a chance.. yeah right… in the same way that Democrats and Clinton supporters gave Trump a chance?.. with accusation after accusation, case after case, rumor after rumor..
    Such hypocrites…

America needs prayer. It really needs prayer. The day that Biden is sworn into office will be one of the saddest days in the history of the country. The people will cheer and we will watch them follow; like sheep to the slaughter.

  38. Borrowing from Danny Gokey: It all comes down to this: Love God Love People.

It really is that simple. That is what will truly unify us. We must put God first in all we do and then we must love people, even those individuals we disagree with and despise. The reason why is that all of us humans were created in the image of God. We love God, so it follows that we must then love His creations.

It is not an easy change for people to make if they have lived their whole lives believing in the differences between us and them making us better then them, or stronger, or smarter, etc. That is what has happened to us since we ate the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Evil has slipped in and we must fight it back every day so that we can be closer to our God.

I think it isn’t unity that we need, but love. And this isn’t the carnal love that is rampant in our world, but the love of Jesus Christ and His way. That is the unifying force. That is how we overcome all of the hatred and evil in our world. We must Love God and Love People.

May God bless you and keep you. And thank you for being a light of hope and Christ’s love in the darkness of this world.

I take a decidedly different view of the facts and have also been writing on the grave matter of abortion and the grave matter of the dysfunctional President.

I have never been blocked because I hold each view in suspense as we navigate the future.

The Lord has chosen a microscopic virus to defeat Trump. No human power could unseat him. No election fraud. No money.

    A microscopic virus.

We have the momentum to continue the fight for at-risk life in the womb. We will win with love not power.

Your views aren’t treasonable, they’re not likely to incite violence; they are your passionate and fervently held views based on a deep faith. Further, I am appalled at the very notion of late-term (I hadn’t even heard of it) abortion; I am divided on the issue in cases of rape, especially incestuous rape, but abortion because ‘it’ is an inconvenience, or not planned, and most especially late-term is murder. Is that grounds for censorship? Or is free speech OK – up to a point? And who decides on where that point is?

But yes, my prayer is for a great spiritual awakening across our nation that brings us to unity “under God” rather than under a president or political party.

  44. Hi, Caralyn. Praying for you and your special gentleman. Very frightening words about “unity” belonging only to those who tow a particular line (think Germany in 1938).
But uplifted, because as you noted at the end, Father IS in control. This is not His first rodeo, and He will not be surprised by the eventual “certified” results of the election. (Strange how media announced “It’s official, Biden wins . . .” before the Electoral College meets December 14.)
Anyway, “He changes times and seasons; He removes [presidents] and sets up [president].” (Daniel 2:21) So how did He let Clinton get elected? Why did He authorize Hitler to come to power in Germany? Why did He “set up” the conflicted Popes of the Schism in the 1400s?
I contend His interest is less in government officials than we think. He is more interested in the people, the individuals, who are lost without Him. Sometimes a harsh governor may push people to find Him; other times, a gentle leader is needed. But His will is always for our good, hard as that may be to see at times. love and prayers, c.a.
