A Missing Outcry

I heard a gut wrenching statistic the other day.

One that, I had to bring up on the blog, even though the thought of broaching this topic amid the current climate of Black Lives Matter, and race relations, scares me half to death.

But I have never let fear stop me from posting before. Particularly because the more nervous I am to push “publish,” the more important the topic actually is.

So anyway, enough beating around the bush:

It is more likely for a black baby to be aborted than it is to be born in New York City.

I’m going to say that again:

According to the Charlotte Loizer Institute, in NYC, it is more likely for a black baby to be aborted, than born alive.

Please let that sink in.

Of the nearly 48,000 reported pregnancies for black women in New York City in 2016, 49 percent ended in abortion, as compared with 47% that ended in live birth, with 4% miscarriages.

I’m not going to sit here and bash you over the head with stats and statistics, or bible verses, or other propaganda — which, believe me, I have an arsenal at the ready.

But rather I just want to invite you to think about this:

Think about the nation, completely tearing apart at the seams, over the unjust and reprehensible murder of George Floyd and the other unarmed black men and women, at the hands of the police. Last year, that number was: nine men, and one woman — unarmed, and fatally shot by police. Ten horrific, and tragic losses of life that should have never ever happened. Each one, an unspeakable injustice.

Now, please juxtapose that with — during that same time period — the true genocide, of nearly 24,000 black babies in NYC alone. Not to mention the 56 million aborted children, worldwide, per year.

Twenty Four Thousand babies. The true black genocide. — Where is the outcry?

Where is the anger and outrage?

Why are we not tearing down statues and calling out Planned Parenthood’s founder, Margaret Sanger — who herself was an outspoken racist, and eugenist. Yes – eugenics, as in: “the practice or advocacy of controlled selective breeding of human populations (as by sterilization) to improve the population’s genetic composition.” (Merriam Webster.)

Sanger was seeking to “assist the race in the elimination of the unfit” — her words in her “Birth Control and Racial Betterment” address of 1919. Sanger’s racism was unabashed: speaking at Klan meetings in 1926, calling for the sterilization of black people through her organization’s targeted outreach to black communities.

Yes. Planned Parenthood — the bright star of feminists, and pink ribbon supporters everywhere — has a disturbingly dark, deeply racist origin.

Consider where your local Planned Parenthood resides? Low income neighborhoods? Near public transportation?

Consider where, how, and to whom they advertise.

And then consider the numbers. Consider, those 24,000 precious, little black babies, killed last year in NYC, alone. Do their lives matter?

In 1984, Jesse Jackson called abortion, black genocide, comparing a mother’s control over her child’s death through abortion, to that of slavery.

We cannot fight for justice for black lives, without including the most vulnerable, and most executed population: the children in the womb.

It is an uncomfortable conversation. But it is a gross atrocity that we are allowing to take place, here in “woke” 2020.

Wake up, America. If we’re truly fighting for justice for our black brothers and sisters, we cannot ignore the biggest injustice of all.

Because every. single. life. matters. Every single one.

Regardless of race, sex, background, religion, sexual orientation, nationality — or life stage — we are all made by God. And therefore are all inherently valuable and worthy of justice and life.

Yes, Black Lives Matter — all of them.

“This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

  1. I’m pro-choice (when it’s done very early), but I’m thinking lately that abortion is also a symptom of how we’ve just gotten so many things wrong. Oh, here’s a problem? Solve it with violence! How about solving problems with love and compassion? Why do so many women still have abortions? I think that’s an important question…

Always love your thoughtful posts! ❤️

  2. Such a great piece. For a man, who is desperately trying to have a child with his wife, this is the true genocide.

What we would give for a child is everything.

The statistics you gave on black abortions is shocking on their own.

Imagine the numbers combined for all races and then worldwide – 19,4million as at 16 June 2020 @ 07h30 CAT, and counting. A staggering 142,000 abortions per day this year already.

    This is the true genocide.

  3. Love this article Caralyn. There are so many voices not being heard at the moment. Millions..
The trouble with people looking at abortion is actually convincing people that what is in the womb is actually human. For that I like the arguments Ben Shapiro posed to college students during the Q&A sessions he has. I honestly wish I was as knowledgeable or as articulate as he is in that regard.

I just watched video on Facebook, to which I will share with you on Messenger.

  4. You are right to ask where the outrage is about the abortion rate amongst black families but I fear you greatly over-simplify the problem. You might ask where is the outrage about the 23,000 babies that die each year in the first year of their lives – this is the number of deaths in black families that are additional to those of white families because of the higher neo natal death rate. You might ask about the outrage regarding the disproportionate deaths amongst black families as a result of lower life expectancy from poverty and disadvantage. I do take exception to the way the anti abortion lobby reduces a complex social problem to a moralistic single issue. If we want to do something about high abortion rates amongst black families, it is no use taking the moral high ground – we will have to do something about poverty and disadvantage. I am pro-life – not just pro the life of the unborn.

    1. hi Wordwool, thank you so much for this thoughtful response. you pose some very powerful questions. You’re right – to be prolife means to be prolife not just for justice for the womb, but justice for all life, including safe homes where children can thrive. these are powerful considerations, and i appreciate you bringing this important perspective. 5. Unfortunately yet again a commentator greatly oversimplifies the issue.
To be outraged about the abortion rate of black babies and call it the true genocide in comparison to the slaughter of black adults and children is insulting at best. To speak of the terribly high number of abortions without fully exploring or considering the socioeconomic conditions these children are unfortunately more likely to be born into is disingenuous.
Have you even thought about the structural and societal reasons why potential black mothers are not bringing these precious lives to full term? So much of it stems directly from the ills of structural racism and long term oppression of the black community and that is not acknowledged. You are being congratulated on your opinion by those who have no idea what it is to live with their skin as a target and have no idea what it is to raise children who will experience the same.
Pro life includes from conception to the grave. You would do better to educate yourself further before giving an opinion on something you do not appear to fully understand.

    1. hi Bim, thank you for sharing your thoughts. i hear you and agree – prolife means conception to natural death. every single loss of life is tragic. i am not discounting that fact. every single loss of life. i choose to speak up for the innocent children in the womb, because they do not have a voice. they do not have the chance to speak up for themselves against the injustice done to them. that is why i speak up. i appreciate you joining the conversation. 6. Your post got me checking just how much an abortion in New York is, $400. At least if it was more expensive, it might make people consider. This is a very sensitive subject with many angles.

Im completely against it but the real problem is that sex is no longer looked at as the sacred act that it is. I heard a quote about how younger people now stress more over losing their phones than their virginity.

I have nothing against people having sex but if people just want to have lots of sex why is there not a procedure that a woman or man can have so they are unable to have children until they decide to have one.

But to the blacks lives matter issue I hope all the protests don’t result in a second spike, cause that could cause even more global unrest.

  7. Carolyn I know you are passionate about this issue. I remember your silent vigil. I kind of agree with worldwool, about this. I am not in a position to know the figures but maybe there would be fewer abortions, if poverty were tackled more effectively. Truly caring for young women. Funnily enough I wrote this week about The Freedom Writers. It is a true story about a teacher in Los Angeles and her pupils. As you know I am a teacher. That is where my passion lies. Erin Gruwell is a teacher, who works with disdvantaged youngsters and helps them to tell their stories. Giving young people hope and a future, would probably lower abortion rates and also alleviate other issues in my view. If you want to investigate The Freedom Writers Foundation on You Tube Tube or Erin Gruwell you can hear their stories and what a difference a decent education and a caring dedicated teacher made in the lives of those young people. Often the best way you can help children, including unborn ones, is to help their mothers.
I admire your courage, even if I do not wholly agree with you.

    1. Thank you so much for sharing your heart on this. Poverty is absolutely an issue. There are many other issues present in the wide array of circumstances that lead a woman to have an abortion, all of which should be addressed, so as to put an end to this devastating reality that results in the deaths of millions of children annually. I look forward to reading your article, and looking up that foundation. Thank you for passing that information along. I am inspired by the solutions you’ve presented!! Thank you! Hugs and love xox

  13. As a black woman, I have had these statistics brought up quite a bit. As a Christian, I stand with the Bible on its stance on abortion. It is wrong! The Lord tells each child is a gift from Him. I also say to this, for most of us, this situation in America seems hopeless. We came as slaves and have been victimized from thence. What hope do parents of black kids have that these injustices will not be their kids future? What hope do they have that they kids will not become just another statistic? Where’s the hope that the kids they bring into the world will a bright and prosperous future? I have a 22 and a 19 year old. They have already been called racist slurs and they are girls. The boys have it even worse. Is there hope?

  15. I agree with you. Abortion is wrong. In my opinion, it is reprehensible after the gestation period of three months. I, too, believe that it is genocidal. That said, I wish we could focus on the issue at hand within the moment without resorting to what about this? And what about that?
At some point, perhaps, there will be an uprising–a spontaneous protest–in response to the innocent life that is lost through abortion. Perhaps there will be reform and investment in the lives of children that are born in unfortunate circumstances. That would be worthy of protest, no doubt, just as this current state of unrest brought on by decades and decades of systemic abuse of people of color by the authorities of our municipalities, state and federal government is worthy of protest. Just my opinion.

  22. I’ve just watched a sobering movie of someone driving through NY with all major stores boarded up. Don’t know if that’s reality or someone trying to doctor up the situation for their own purposes. One doesn’t know what to believe these days. I hear what you are saying but have been reflecting on the destruction and bullying on both sides of the fence which I equally disapprove of. I’ve spent a couple of days reflecting on what has happened around the world. I’m now convinced there is reason for frustration. Black people are an underprivileged lot with less opportunities in life. Less in access to money to rise through the layers of society though some few do luck out. Less in education which allows people to reason things through and a horrible host of memories of discrimination going back into the days of their enslavement. I wonder how I’d react if caught up in that predicament? Now I don’t approve of destruction but that is a natural consequence of being marginalized. What needs to happen is for all of us to see these people are raised through opportunities to a point where their children at least are considered an equal part of our society and treated as equals in society. Only then can we seek to promote an ideal moral code and I don’t believe in the combination of religion and government forcing people to abide by codes which government leaders and must I say it religious leaders and practitioners have not modelled in the way they live. That would take us all the way back to the persecutions of the middle ages. The US Constitution was put in place to see that doesn’t happen. We need to respect that as we deal with this crisis.

  24. I’ll be blunt. Some of your readers are poorly informed (the gentleman who cited the Democrats as the party of the KKK obviously hasn’t read anything since 1963 — segregationists all moved to the GOP after passage of the Civil Rights Act, and Trump’s endorsement of David Duke simply shows that the relationship continues).

Look, the religious right helped to create the mess that you see, and it’s not targeted to blacks, but rather against all lower income people. By limiting access to other options for birth control, you have made abortion more of an inevitable result for the poor. While abstention is growing (and will add to economic hardship for us all in the future as it has in Japan), it’s still not a practical option given human nature here. Ready access to counseling and pills should have been available and would have prevented the current abortion wave.

My comment about Japan: a declining population will push more jobs offshore and prompt corporations to raise prices as they sell less. Just look what’s happening in the auto industry now. With lack of population growth, Japan went into an economic dead zone for two decades. We can and probably will do that here as a result of the economic and tax war against the middle class and poor. And evangelical leaders are backing the people conducting that war.

If you back the people who do harm, you shouldn’t be surprised at the result.
