Finding My Prayer Voice

Happy Monday friends!

I’m sitting here in front of my air conditioner. There’s a heat index of 99+ degrees outside. I’m procrastinating going running. And I’m basking in the glow of an absolutely lovely weekend!

I actually don’t mind this whole getting-together-outside-in-small-groups thing we’ve got going on. It makes for more intimate gatherings with friends who really mean something to you. And I am down. with. that.

Tonight’s blog post is over on WINE Ministries (Women In the New Evangelization) – where I am a contributor. And it’s titled, “Finding My Prayer Voice.”

There are a lot of things that need our prayer right now in the world. A lot. And I don’t know about you, but sometimes, given the breadth and urgency of all these global and national needs, I can often feel overwhelmed at even where to start.

So if that sounds like something you can relate to, I’d like to invite you to hop on over to my article on WINE Ministries.

Have a beautiful week, friends. Stay cool. Stay healthy. Stay encouraged. And I’ll see you on Wednesday for an absolutely delicious recipe!

“This is what the Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life.” Ez 37:5

  1. I made the jump over and read your article. It’s a good word!

My biggest take away is: don’t try to say perfect prayers, just begin and the Holy Spirit will help you.
    God’s best to you.

    • Oh thank you so much for checking it out, David! I appreciate that. And yes! That’s the long and short of it!! And what a blessing that truth is! Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you friend – what a kind thing to say. Means a lot. Hugs and love xox

  2. Excellent article, as always. I have often said and will continue to say that prayer should always be our first line of defense, never our last resort. Sadly, with all the unrest across our nation, prayer seems to be the least of concern based on mainstream media and social media. Blessings to you, Ms. Carolyn, and hold fast to your faith in the power of prayer.

    • Thanks so much Darryl! You’re SO right – our FIRST line of defense, I love that insight so much. And amen – there really is power in prayer! Thanks again for taking the time to read it! Hugs and love xox

    • Thank you so much! You’re so right we need all the prayer we can get!! Glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  3. A lovely post Caralyn. It can be overwhelming at times when we feel that it is all too much and wonder if our mumbled prayer can make any difference when the problems seem so huge. But we pray to a God that is bigger than all of this and yes the Holy Spirit is with us when words fail us but we are to take those steps to pray. I am reminded of this quote by F.B Myer which said “The greatest tragedy of life is not in unanswered prayer but in unoffered prayer”.
    Blessings.

    • Thank you so much!! You’re so right – He is bigger and knows our hearts. What a beautiful and powerful truth!! And wow what an incredible quote: unoffered prayer … isn’t that the truth!! Hugs and love xox

  4. On bended knee is where I find my daily reprieve. Asked what’s God’s address. In my “NOW” as many times in a day as I need. I ask God to take my will & do what with me what He will. Thy will be done! So many things that could cause fear. Fear, false evidence appearing real. With God in control, I just get to sit back in the beauty of his grace which abounds all around! Prayer is essential in my life! Thank you for sharing! God is faithful to meet us right where we are, no matter what! That is the best part of unconditional love!

    • Thank you so much Lisa for this beautiful response! You’re so right – that’s the beauty of His grace – we don’t have to fear because He is in control! So glad you stopped by! Hugs and love xox

  5. I meant his address is “NOW”! Anytime, anywhere. We don’t need a special prayer closet. Also meant take my will and do with me what thy will!

  6. Thanks for sharing! It’s true that when we pray, God doesn’t want posturing. He hates that; Jesus said when we pray, we are to go to a secret place and just talk to Him. However, at the same time, it’s not excuse to be “unedited”; remember you are talking to the King of kings. Even Prince Harry and Duchess Kate remember that “grandma” is still the Queen. 🙂

Yesterday, my pastor reminded us that despite all the troubles we faced this year, Christians should be reminded that in every age since Jesus ascended, the church has always had to deal with crises. Therefore, we should not marvel. I know a lot of people got bored in history class – which is to their detriment because having the long view, actually widens their perspectives. I heard this story that the Emperor Nero began persecuting the Christians after the Apostle Paul shared the Gospel with him; the Emperor rejected it and thus went insane. Twenty years later, Emperor Domitian instituted first widespread persecution. That continues on and off until Constantine. Then there was the fall of Rome in 476 where some, you probably guessed it, blamed it on the Christians. Then there the Vikings, the Muslims, the Mongols, the Black Death, the Turks, and finally the Communists. Each time, it felt like “the end of the world” and each time, the Church survived.

  7. Loved this. It is absolutely spot on. Where to start Carolyn? I was hopeful about New York, feisty and plucky. New York has always brushed itself down and got back on its feet. I have faith that it will again. I was watching Russian Doll. I probably shouldn’t but I found it so meaningful. Winding back continually at square one but determined to learn the lessons.

  8. Happy Monday 🙂
The weather sounds nice (compared to cold Melbourne)… and so does outside time with friends!

I have read your WINE article –
I am with you – on the topic of prayer. I spent some of 2018 in Leeds, UK and my pastor was a huge advocate of Holy Spirit prayer…

    🙂

  9. “It would be rash to say that there is any prayer which God never ‘grants’. But the strongest candidate is the prayer we might express in the single word ‘encore’. And how should the Infinite repeat Himself? All space and time are too little for Him to utter Himself in them once.
And the joke, or tragedy, of it all is that these golden moments in the past, which are so tormenting if we erect them into norm, are entirely nourishing, wholesome, and enchanting if we are content to accept them for what they are, for memories. Properly bedded down in a past which we do not miserably try to conjure back, they will send up exquisite growths. Leave the bulbs alone, and the new flowers will come up. Grub them up and hope, by fondling and sniffing, to get last year’s blooms, and you will get nothing. ‘Unless a seed die’ …” C.S. Lewis ‘Letters to Malcolm.’

  10. Keep those prayers going. God is a Social Being for we are made in His image. That means he wants to socialize with us and we owe Him that as He is our Heavenly Father so keep praying your conversation to him. He is not puzzled by what is happening around us. He has foreknowledge and the future for us beyond this world is bright is we choose that way. 🙂

  11. My dear friend Caralyn,

Yesterday I felt so much overwhelmed, it was a wordless prayer from the heart that I wrote down a poem trying to describe such feelings which I would like to share with you:

    ONE IN THE ONE

    I feel my heart overflowing
With love for the whole creation
Humility at the feet of the Creator
    His light flowing in me

I feel this Ocean inside me
    Like waves of pure light
    Hugging the whole being
    Moving my heart to tears

    I feel oneness with everything
    Heart to heart connection
Dawn to dusk, day to night
    Perfect happiness

I feel the current of bliss
    That flows through me
    A dancing light
On the waves of my being

    Everything sounds, everything shakes
    Shines like millions of suns
    Sound of Eternity
    One in the One

Thanks for sharing, my friend and have a great week ahead.
    Hugs and love
    Didi

  12. Awesome! Powerful and inspirational read about the Holy Spirit kicking in when we are overwhelmed by so much need. Let’s let go and let the Holy Spirit take over ours and the world’s needs. In Jesus’ name! Amen!! 😇

    • thank you so much! isn’t that such a comforting fact that the Holy Spirit knows our hearts!? have a beautiful week! Hugs and love xox

  13. Congratulations for your decision to find your prayer voice.I wish you all the best for this blessed task of yours.I am eagerly waiting to know more about your experience with the omnipotent .Thanks a lot for sharing.👍👍🙏🌹

  14. Three men set a challenge to see whose prayer strategy would be answered. They decided that they would pray to win the lottery.
The first one, went with the fancy words and elaborate prayer approach. “Dear Lord, I come before thy magnificent presence in the name of thy beloved son…”
The second one, went for the pleading and begging. “Lord, have mercy on me. Please give me the lottery. With it I can do so much for you. Please, Lord. Please Lord…”
The third one.. well he had quite an unusual approach… He took a knife and a picture of Mary and said, “Lord, if you ever want to see you mother again…” #Joke.

    Luke 18 vs 10 – 14.

Prayer is a deeply personal thing in between you and God. You don’t need prayer beads, to kneel down, etc. We have to remember that after as part of the Trinity, when Christ ascended to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit down to us; to live inside of us.. So God is not someone up somewhere you can reach, he’s as close to you as your next breath, you next heartbeat. He’s in you.
All you have to do is talk to him as you talk to your friend, your father.

Sometimes I wonder when I meet God, whether He would look like Morgan Freeman. He did such a great job acting as God in Bruce Almighty. But you want to know something, he also gave the most important lesson to every person on earth, when it comes to prayer.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDWuFDWZ6-E

Speak from the heart, with humility. God as always listening. And that is the subtle lesson we can take from the above parable in the book of Luke.

    • oh gosh too funny! thanks for sharing your heart on this – you’re so right – its like talking to our friend and father. i love that comforting thought so much. hahah – i know! morgan freeman is such a talented actor! yes!!! thanks again for this awesome response! have a great day! Hugs and love xox

    • oh gosh thank oyu so much for taking the time to read it!! i hope you have an awesome day! Hugs and love xox

  15. But, meanwhile Deblasio and other left wing radicals or elitists say it’s perfectly fine for wild banshees and over the top cults or thug gangs like BLM or ANTIFA to have massive riots and wreak billions of dollars of destruction, mayhem and death upon society; as well to spread any potential infection throughout the largest cities in the nation; yet Church singing or even attendance and receiving the Eucharist is an absolute atrocity to them! The hypocrisy and evil is stacking up so high with the ministers of evil that you need angel wings to stay above it! Plain to see is the diabolical at work through the many minions of Satan who relish in all this wicked deception ruled by the AGENDA of the damned. Wait till God deals with these imposters and evil doers!

    • At this point we need prayers that we overcome the Covid19 pandemic and our world’s economy recovers. Also pray for the less fortunate that either lost their home or in danger of losing their home. This virus is among the worst in history.

On a side note I’m disappointed that I wont go to the Hot Rod Power Tour which was scheduled to be in Joliet, Illinois. Live an hour from there. Would have loved to go there and meet some new people but yeah the pandemic is shutting many things down which is why there is a lot of people who don’t have money to pay rent/mortgage.

So prayers for all that have had their lives changed from this pandemic.

      • Oh yes mighty pray must be first and foremost on everyone’s daily activities list! The only power that can resolve or help now is God Almighty through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I must say that the whole COVID-19 Pandemic was another weaponized falsehood something typical or even inconsequential that was shaped into a tool to destroy the good, the good economy, the good presidency and the good lives of citizens that do the right things! Bill Gates is already saying watch the next Pandemic it will get much more attention! This is all Satanic based diabolical evil at work my friend all in the Holy Scriptures.

      • Caralyn… just sharing this comment I know you will appreciate being an entertainer that I just a moment ago posted to a Catholic blog!
“Just a nice passing thought, but, Father Joseph Illo looks like a twin of Andy Williams, and, I bet he has a beautiful singing voice too! God works in mysterious ways and thank you father for all you have said and do! I recently ordered for the first time the complete DVD set of all the Andy Williams Shows and those were good and better days in comparison, in so many ways compared to now! Those shows make me sad and happy for obvious reasons. God bless.”

      • I may have worded that wrong or you don’t know too much, lol! I mean bout the older classics of TV and Film? I shouldn’t assume though! OK, you can take it Caralyn; you’re a good sport! He was a fine crooner/gentleman and had a family variety entertainment show decades ago which was great then, but, to see those today when things have changed so much is so pleasant and actually beautiful! So much so that when I played the first disk it made me cry! What can I say I’m a very emotional guy and think some beautiful souls are no longer with us and that is something to miss or for me regret, but, like a guy I worked with who studied to become a priest said they and my long lost dogs are not mine they are God’s; which I humbly accept; but still I can cry right? His Christmas shows were really phenomenal , tender, classic family entertainment, on the order of Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed in a Wonderful Life; and look at the masses today what they find appealing for Christmas and you can see how much things have changed and not for the better sweet-pea! You know I’m a character like you and not really a busting butt kind, but, a playful soul, so, that’s why the bit of cheeky attitude, to just play around in a fun way with you! I really think you would like those old shows because you appreciate quality and good professional entertainers, and, those folks back then were really nice people many of them if not all! If I lived close by I would let you borrow my DVD set, but, next best thing I would offer to send you a new set of your own! If there a PO Box for that I’ll just do it! I know you like the up to date stuff, but, you strike me as a lady that totally appreciates quality and you told me you find Lucy fun didn’t you, those expressive faces she makes that I’ve seen you doing in some shots lately? “I Love Lucy” is an OLD show, but, it’s still fun and very interesting to see how people lived and acted back then! “The Three Stooges” are another example of even old classic slapstick which nobody does that anymore, but, I like to see it a bit these days, I even have an ultimate collection of the Three Stooges I found in a D.C Comics store a few years ago for like $60.00 with 20 disks, I think it’s probably all of their compilation from their first years almost to when they ended their run. In the right mood I can crack up watching those guys and enjoy a bucket of popcorn or pig out on whatever!
I want to send you that DVD set!
        Ciao.
Absolutely no obligations associated with me doing so! You could even consider it a gift from God, because, He likes for me to do good little things!
The Williams one not the Stooges, yuk yuk yuk! 🤣😜😉 ⭐🙏🕊✝️🕊🙏🌟

      • Oh Caralyn in case I haven’t bored you yet please allow me to try again, with this little comment I just sent out to some dude that just happened upon one of my comments and he then caught my attention when I looked at his blog for the first time and wouldn’t you know the top blog listed was about a sour experience he just had with the opposite sex and he did then go on in his piece to explain how the others previously had also done the same thing! What’s that definition going around that Einstein coined about insanity, “THE DEFINITION OF INSANITY IS DOING THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AND GETTING THE SAME RESULT, BUT EXPECTING A DIFFERENT ONE.” Yup been there done that!!!
Romantic relationships are a dismal and risky business today; so much so I dare say practically like finding “a needle in the proverbial haystack!” Too many conflicting forces in motion in a conflicted world or too many balls in the air to keep track of let alone juggle them all without dropping or losing a few! People can turn fickle or change mood and outlook in a heartbeat and loyalty goes up in a puff of smoke in a hurry, because of these factors or just plain confusion! The devil gets his due these days in many ways and messing up human interpersonal relationships is one of his favorite “kill joy” sports to divide and conquer then ultimately destroy! Of course you hope and want in your heart that concept of falling in love with that so special soul mate, but, I say it’s an uphill battle to find and maintain if you do at the very least or at worst literally extremely arduous. I only suggest that anyone that still wants to hope and dream of such a thing, not to look for anything of the kind, and invest all of your energy in serving the Lord Jesus Christ, and, as you do that dream will be in God’s care, so, if that is His will that you be with some special just right for you person that together as a couple it will flourish and bloom into the magnificence that it should be, of real genuine love and commitment for life; fantastic! And, if God has that person for you at some point down the road already chosen, He will bring you together; you don’t have to try out the different models like used or new cars to see if one is right for you! Peace and God bless.
Any who, so, if you’re still by some miracle not totally bored or losing it by now, just try to find a way to give me a PO BOX! I’m persistent! A woman from the UK working at a location movie set in the production office told me that once, when I was trying to see the producer or production manager to get on the shooting set and kept showing up day after day to ask the same question of her! I guess Einstein would have had a quick something to say to me! Well, I did see the production Manager finally and he brought me to the set. Yuk, yuk, yuk, I had been getting in for a week during night shoots that everyone missed! Sneaky guy! It was all good!
I guess either persistence or insanity can pay off once in a while and in my case it had to be the latter, right! Could that be why I was good in outside sales too, because, people finally figured I was cracked and so just to kiss me off they would say, “where do I sign,” and then relief? The final Bye Lawrence!!!
If you do have one send it to my listed blog email! TY 🙏✝️🙏

  16. See some clear guidance on prayer from Wayne Jacobsen at https://capost2k.wordpress.com/2020/05/09/do-you-ever-refuse-a-prayer-request/.
One of his comments that hit most home with me was “My young son awakened me to the folly of [praying a wish list]. We were reading John 15 one morning for a family devotion when he suddenly blurted out, “That’s not true!” I had just read the verse about God giving us whatever we ask of him. But my five-year-old was already aware that most of what we prayed for as a family did not happen. I wondered if our prayer practices were teaching him, whether we liked it or not, that prayer is only verbalizing our wish list.”
Food for thought – what are we supposed to be praying? love and prayers for you, c.a.

    • thanks for sharing that – i look forward to checking it out. oh wow – great thought! Hugs and love xox

  17. First, you remain in my prayers! My concern for your safety continues with every story of troubles out of NYC. Sorry to go “Old man” on you…wait…I AM an old man. *sigh* Well, just keep being careful!!

Prayer. As I’ve written recently, it’s gotta be the means of first resort, not last. Hard to do. Hard to rely on the invisible when we are assaulted by problems of the visible every waking moment. I find prayer most insurmountable when having to ask forgiveness yet again. When is He going to call “Enough?”

Thinking out loud here; how about approaching God as a dear friend you haven’t seen in too long? You start with an apology and pleasantries.

“Sorry it’s been so long. How’s the Kid and angels? I’ll bet Work has been pretty busy lately, judging from the headlines. Me? Well, you know, I’ve been better. Since You asked (He does ask), I could use a little help with XYZ, if you don’t mind. Yeah, and about the world…I know You’ve noticed, but I just want to talk about it a little, if you don’t mind. I’m sure my concerns are at least similar to yours, and I’d like to weigh in on a couple things and ask if You would give them a little extra attention.”

Driving in the car, riding in an Uber, or sitting on a park bench, God is in the seat next to you. Or standing there if there’s no room. Just talk to him. Like you would me. All you have to do is know, in faith, that He is right there. I find it’s easier to talk to God when I put Him in the seat next to me.

You do what you can but give it a little structure to help settle your mind. You get to a certain point shrug your shoulders and tell God this is what you can think of and you probably don’t have the priorities straight. Would He please send His spirit to pick up the slack?

So…that’s me rambling. I hope I might have given you something to think about. Maybe helpful. I really enjoyed the article! All the best!

    • Hi Jeff! thanks so much friend 🙂 i really appreciate your concern. thanksfully things are going really erallly well in nyc! i love your thoughts on prayer. amen – the first resort! and i love the idea of talking to God like a friend — especially because He is!!those are some great quiet times to talk to God – and that’s such a comforting truth — He really is *right there.* Such an awesome note of encouragement, thank you Jeff. I can always count on your for some awesome insight and perspective! hope you and your girls have a wonderful week ahead. stay safe, stay healthy, stay cooL! Hugs and love xox

  18. Great post. I loved this statement you made, “What a comfort to know that I don’t have to know where to begin; I don’t have to know how to pray.” What a liberating truth that we all need to be reminded of often. God is looking for professional, polisher pray’ers, but sincere, humbled and authentic people.

    • Thank you so much Michael for taking the time to read it! yes! He just wants our authentic hearts 🙂 Hugs and love xox

    • Thanks so much Jack! Yes! I love it too – such powerful imagery! Hugs and love xox

  19. Your post is so encouraging! I have a hard time staying focused while praying because I feel like there are so many areas of life, groups of people, I don’t even think about praying for. So often I feel like I just check off a box of praying for the same things every night before I go to bed. Great reminder that the Holy Spirit is with us to help us pray!

    • Hi Ellen, oh gosh thank you so much for sharing your heart. I feel you there – I can definitely get into prayer monotony too! amen – we have an awesome Helper! Hugs and love xox

  20. Miss Caralyn, there is a deep beauty expressed in the simplicity of prayer, of recognizing that the Holy Spirit knows our deepest needs, concerns, passions and all of our very being in ways we don’t know our selves. Deeply, completely, fully.
Pray dear one, pray with the beauty and simplicity of who you are as a well loved daughter of God.

    • Hi Teri – oh gosh, thank you so much for this beautiful reply. You’re so right — deeply, completely, and fully!! What a comforting and encouraging truth that is! Hugs and love xox

  21. You have well articulated to subject that has been so heavy upon my heart, especially this week. My heart is grieved because it seems that many are going on like nothing is happening. NOW is the time to pray!

    • Oh gosh thank you so much Matthew, I’m so glad this resonated with you! Yes! Now is the time to pray! Take heart friend Hugs and love xox

  22. Caralyn, you voiced questions and needs that so many of us feel. What a gift to us that the Holy Spirit takes our meager words and expresses them in true groanings that communicate the root needs that we don’t even always recognize. Thank you for the reminder of God’s awesome ability to do more than we can ever imagine through an imperfect request from His child.

    • Thanks so much friend. Amen – His mercy and love and grace are truly amazing! Hugs and love xox

  23. “What a comfort to know that I don’t have to know where to begin; I don’t have to know how to pray. When I’m overwhelmed by the breadth and gravity of the issues at hand that need prayer, the Spirit “reads” my heart and intercedes for me.”
That is absolute Gold, Caralyn! You shouldn’t limit that awesomeness to just one Christian blog (WINE) at a time like this. I encourage you to repurpose and submit to a variety of blogs this summer. Many Christians need to read those words.

    • Amen to that! Thank you so much John for this awesome encouragement! Truly, I’m so touched!! I’ll look into that! Hugs and love xox

    • aw, I can assure you, Amanda, that Jesus hears your cries and is right there wiping your tears and coving you with His love. Hugs and love xox
