Lucky 37

Oh my gosh I am sick as a dog.

giphy

If you listen to the podcast versions of my posts over on Patreon, you may have noticed that I had the early signs of the “sniffles” last Thursday. Well, those innocent little sniffles have now become a full fledged sinus/upper respiratory nightmare.

I honestly can’t remember ever being this sick. We’re going on day 5, and I pray that I start to turn the corner soon!

ANYWHO

Big news!

First of all, last week – on Monday – I was interviewed by 2 radio stations in California about this blog, and about my book, Bloom! So exciting!! I talked with this wonderful woman for about 30 minutes. They’re going to air the segment on an upcoming Saturday morning. And as soon as they do, I’ll upload it here so y’all can listen to it, too!

On that note, my podcast mic came in the mail yesterday!!!!

So as soon as my voice returns, I’m going to start putting some guests and episodes together! EEK!

Lastly….drum roll please….

We hit 37,000 subscribers!

This is such exciting news, and I wanted to just say a huge thank you for taking the time out of your busy lives to read this blog, share your thoughts, and pass it along to your friends. It honestly means the absolute world. My life is so full because you’re in it. And I know that’s super cheesy, by y’all have honestly enriched my life with your friendship and compassion and acceptance. So thank you.

So I thought it might be fun today to do something a little different. I wanted to do something creative with the number 37. And goodness knows I’m not about to ask to you read through a “listicle” of 37 items. And frankly, I don’t feel qualified to be dishing out advice like I’m the Dalai freakin’ Lama or something.

So I thought….I’m going to share five of the best pieces of life advice I’ve ever received….in 37 words!

1)   “Just do the next right thing.” -Mom

Life can be challenging. Be it recovery, a goal, your career path, a relationship. Sometimes it can be completely overwhelming/scary to even know where to begin. Just do the next right thing. Baby steps add up.

2)   “Make emotional bank account deposits.” – Dad

A bank account for relationships. Every generosity, every kindness, every time you keep your word or act with integrity is an emotional bank account deposit. Deposits build trust . And trust is the key to long-lasting, healthy relationships.

3)   “Don’t shoot yourself in the foot with your words.” – Mom

Gossiping may make you feel “accepted” at the time, but the reality is that everyone you just gossiped to, can no longer trust you. You are literally shooting your reputation in the foot by gossiping about others.

4)   “Sometimes it’s good to go to bed hungry” – Dad

My dad said this to me once after we drove all day home from vacation. My newly-recovered self was really annoyed and concerned that he didn’t have dinner that night. (And I hesitate to even put this on an eating disorder recovery website for fear of triggering someone, but it really has stuck with me.) It’s always good to remember how blessed you are. To remember how bleak things could be. We are all infinitely more blessed than we could even comprehend. (Sorry couldn’t get that one down to 37 words!)

5)   Change the world one relationship at a time. – Fr. Mike Schmitz (Paraphrased)

Our greatest tool to reach people about Christ, or strengthen our communities is through the power of friendship. God is love, and what better way to show that love to another person than by being their friend. ((Listen to his amazing podcast on this topic.))

*And one more thing, last week’s post on the Boy Scouts definitely got you guys talking! It got close to 100 shares on Facebook, which is pretty amazing! (Thank you for sharing it!!) There were numerous comments that touched on LGBTQ issues and same sex attraction. And I wanted to just take a moment to pass along an incredible resource on those topics…and it’s a book written by the rockstar, Fr. Mike Schmitz. It’s called Made for Love, and it really does an incredible job talking about those topics from a faith standpoint. It’s Fr. Mike at his best. You can get it here.

  1. Hope you’re feeling better today! No fun. I love these advice quotes, so special that these words of wisdom came from your parents. And how wonderful is it that you’ve reached 37,000 followers??!!! SO great! Congrats! xox

  2. Concerning your Dad’s statement about “Sometimes it’s good to go to bed hungry” reminds me of a saying I heard in the last couple of years–“Sometimes you have to get comfortable being uncomfortable.” I do some work in third world countries and I have learned to be comfortable at being uncomfortable. Congrats on the 37k subscribers–amazing accomplishment. You touch a lot of lives with a positive message and a lifestyle that backs up your words.
