I’ve been really grossed out at our culture lately.
I don’t know about you, but it seems like all of a sudden, the entire world has gone mad.
Well, not mad exactly. But rather…it’s gone occult.
And no, this is not in preparation for Halloween that’s right around the corner.
No, I’m talking witchcraft, satanic imagery, demonic themes — it seems as though that specific degree of darkness has come out of the woodwork in society, making itself not only known, but unable to be missed.

Last night were the MTV Video Music Awards, where — though not to Sam Smith‘s level of demonic imagery in Unholy at the Grammys earlier this year —

Doja Cat premiered her new song, “Demons” with blood soaked demons dancing alongside her. She is the same singer who performed a different song with lyrics such as, “She the devil” and “I’m a demon lord.” Her costumes included pentagrams, and her flashing devil horns.
Taylor Swift, who won a bunch of awards last night at the VMAs, though she may have Christian parents fooled that she’s “safe” for your little kids to listen too, she too is brimming with demonic imagery, including the lyric, “Karma is a god.”

Yep — that’s Taylor for you in her music video for “Karma.” Imagine what filming this scene must have been like. Her, surrounded by her dancers dressed as possessed demons, holding that devil mask between takes. Like — this wasn’t some, “oops! How’d this end up in here?” It was a choice.

And might I remind you that there’s also this little diddy of conjuring spells that Taylor performs in her Eras Tour.

But it’s not just in pop music. When I was at the airport this summer, I stumbled upon these magazines in the little airport snack shops in Ohio:

That’s right, a magazine titled, Witches. Complete with a story on modern spellwork.
Celebrities are making no effort to conceal satanic practices, either. Might I remind you that when Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox got engaged, she ended their Instagram announcement by telling fans that they drank each others’ blood afterwards.

And when she was asked about that comment, she doubled down: “We do consume each other’s blood on occasion for ritual purposes only.”
Ritual purposes only.
I’m going to be honest: I fear for the salvation of mankind.
God was not unclear about his thoughts on this. He did not mince words. It was the very first commandment He gave us in Exodus 20:3: “Thou shall have no other gods before Me.”
Growing up, when I would reflect on this first commandment, I always would think of the other “idols” one thinks of that compete for God’s top place in our lives: busyness, pride, putting sports above church on Sundays…you know…comparatively innocent things to actual Satanism.
It is honestly really baffling to think that this is actually something people fall into.
I was listening to the Pints with Aquinas podcast, and just this week, Matt Fradd did an interview with a former satanist, who then became Catholic — and it was just eye opening to hear that there are actually people out there who follow the enemy. In fact, I had to stop listening to it, because I didn’t want to fill my head with darkness.
It’s no secret that I 100% contribute my anorexia to influences from the enemy. I’m not saying that I was possessed — but that terrible season of my life was a battle of spiritual warfare. And my eating disorder was 100% used by the enemy to manipulate me into self destruction. To the tune that, while at one of my first few days at inpatient, during one of my therapy sessions, I fully believe that a demon was released from my soul — I’ve written extensively about it here and here.
But all I can say is that, I fully believe that people can fall into darkness incredibly easily. Thankfully, I had the prayers of my family, and my own faith foundation I had grown up with to keep me from succumbing to it.
All that to say, this country needs prayers: the pop stars, the curious teens that think “experimenting” with the occult is rebellious and the answer to their issues, those trapped in a cycle of darkness, and those who may be flirting with danger. May they be reminded of who they truly are: Who they were created by, and Who truly loves them.
May they not be tricked by the temptations or empty promises of the enemy. And may they turn away from evil and cling to what is good.

I will leave you with two quotes: This first was the verse that was on my mirror growing up that, I believe we all need to live by, today especially:
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8
And then my random personal favorite, which is true now, more than ever:
Deuteronomy 20:1 “When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you.”
Hear me when I say: we are at war. As Christians, we are at war for our souls and the souls of our children. But fear not: He is with us.

I don’t follow celebrities so I don’t think I missed anything by not watching the Grammys. I don’t even follow T.Swift but this is indeed concerning, especially since celebs greatly influence youth. I always thought Doja Cat and Sam Smith were not only inappropriate but overall bad influences.
Love those two verses. Thank you for including them. I am so out of the loop when it comes to pop music and that crap they are pushing. It reminds me of the late 70’s/early 80’s when ACDC came on the scene. In your face celebration of evil and going to hell. Just when I begin to think, surely it can’t get any crazier, it does. Keep speaking the truth in love. God has definitely given you ministry, right here in the blog-o-sphere. DM

Truly an excellent post! The reminder that we are in a spiritual battle and need to pray for lost souls is truer than ever. We have the victory though. Jesus has accomplished that. Our culture is darker than ever before! Thank you for sharing and for the reminder.

I ran across a FB post on a thrift finds site, a woman posted a photo of a statue she bought from Goodwill. Going by the comments, it was Danu, a Celtic “goddess” that some witches worship. (I had no clue). What was disturbing, that particular post had more than 24,000 likes and almost 1500 comments, all oooing and ahhing over it, asking about the woman’s altar, etc. Mind you, this wasn’t a site having to do with the occult or witchcraft. It is a ‘look at the neat thing I found at a garage sale/Goodwill/estate sale’ type thing. The fact it is that prolific is downright scary, and as you posted, they are no longer hiding, but trying to make the occult/mysticism/satanism mainstream and “cool”.
You hit this spot on, Caralyn. I have seen the constant ads from MTV pushing this Grammy thing and will never view it. I remember the very first few hours that MTV was on the air in August of 1981. It was very simple, and very pure compared to what it has become which is a hive of pure evil.
I thought Swift was better than this, shame on her and the lot of them. I fear for our country and our children, young skulls of very impressionable mush. America needs God back in our shameful public schools and so much more.

Amen! It’s tragic to see our country so deceived by Satan…they’re looking for something to worship, other than God, and missing the Light of the World in all His glory. May God forgive and redeem His people from this darkness. Blessings to you for shining a spotlight on all of this…and I’m so thankful you were redeemed from Satan’s grasp as well!
A nice antidote band for this is Powerwolf. Yeah, they don’t look it, but “Beast of Gevauden” has a pretty darn good video that is practically the Stations of the Cross on film. It’s not satanic at all. Even their songs “Dancing with the Dead” and “Demons are a Girl’s Best Friend” practically scream, “No, messing with the occult is a BAD IDEA. DON’T DO IT.”
“Army of the Night” is one of Powerwolf’s other good ones, as is “Incense and Iron,” “Blessed and Possessed,” and a couple of others. Again, they’re not demonic, though they look scary. Calling them pro-Christian might be overkill but they’re more pro-Christian than the current darlings of the media. Puts them ahead of the game.
If Powerwolf is too much, Sabaton is another good antidote. I especially recommend their songs “The Last Stand” about the Swiss Guards killed in 1527 protecting the Pope and “Winged Hussars,” about the charge that broke the Siege of Vienna September 12, 1683. (No, 9/11 was *not* chosen at random – they were taking vengeance for the Siege of Vienna, among other lost battles.) “No Bullets Fly” is another good one by Sabaton, as is “Hearts of Iron,” though be warned that the details behind that one might be disturbing. “Prisoner 8459” is about a Polish soldier who blew the lid off the death camps in Germany and was executed as a traitor in Soviet-controlled Poland, so I highly recommend that one, too.
There are a couple of other bands that work as antidotes to this madness, but these are the ones I can name right now. Francesca Battistelli, Mandisa, and Renee Bondi are softer and more obviously pro-Christian, so if Powerwolf is too much and Sabaton too loud, I recommend them as well. They’ve been fighting this trend for a while, so we are not short on options to fight back. It is just a matter of finding them. 😉
Today the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. Keep pointing away from hell and to the cross! We adore you O Christ, and we bless you, because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
The two errors the non-Christ-follower falls into are either to disbelieve in spirits at all (think Richard Dawkins) or to become wholly obsessed with them, and not having the discernment of the Holy Ghost, become deceived by them.
C.S. Lewis said, “[Demons] themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.”
God is allowing this to happen so we and the watching universal family can see just what satan’s experiment with sin leads too. Signs around us tell us He is fairly close to drawing a curtain down on satan’s proposed alternative form of governance now we all can clearly see it leads to ageing, conflict, degradation, exploitation, dependence and death. If God had dealt with it forcefully when satan started his nonsense and heaven didn’t understand the consequences of sin then all created beings would have served God in fear rather than love at his infinite patience and wisdom. He wants us to serve him with love not fear. But now we understand how damaging this stuff is those who want to live a heavenly life will understand when he obliterates satan and his followers and as an act of mercy God eliminates permanently those who would feel unhappy in heaven because they love sin.
I stopped following the music scene a long time ago. I only stick to the old 80s and 90s music as well as Gospel stuff. I don’t think that there is anything on the new side that I would consider listening to.
Amen! I converted to the faith a couple of years ago but even before that, I struggled to get excited about the big pop stars simply due to the incredible lack of modesty present in the industry. Though I thought many of them to be naturally talented individuals I couldn’t enjoy their shows or videos because they all insisted on performing in bedazzled underwear. Now, with a much better understanding of the faith, it’s very sad to see how this lack of modesty has shifted into outright Satanism. Thank you for shedding light on this situation. More people need to hear this message!

As a writer of fantasy and occasionally horror, I often see the more occult side of fandom. The pursuit of witchcraft is not at all a niche thing anymore. I believe it’s my calling to present the good, true, and godly in these sometimes dark corners, and so much prayer is needed that God’s light will reach the lost and deceived.

You are so right! Praying along with you and others against the encroaching evil that is so pervasive. You would have been encouraged at the prayer session for my wife this past Thurs; unbelievable power was unleashed in that room. More than adequate to handle the Evil One (of course, I say that respectfully).
I think it’s just because the music nowadays is absolutely terrible. I was a 90s kid and it’s the 90s that saw the last of the bands and true rock and roll stars. You looked at the front men of these bands, Liam Gallagher and Richard Ashcroft to name two, and you wanted to be them. Now there sadly nothing decent from today’s artists and they are resorting to shock for attention. Sam Smith has defined himself as gender fluid or neutral and that’s his business and shouldn’t impact his music. He was asked about having no chance of winning a Brit award as he isn’t in either category when it’s actually his music being shit rather than his choice of gender 😂 the modern day celebrities have no character and they have to shock as said before or be constantly in the limelight to be noticed. I’m not up to date with the current people who are classed as celebrities but I know for sure I have zero interest in what they are up to
There was a former Satanist that went Catholic? Even as someone who grew up a devote Catholic, yet has drifted away over the last few years for fear of the mortal sins I have committed, namely laziness and gluttony amongst others I don’t wish to mention here, that’s difficult for me to fathom. I want it to be so, but how can it?
Surely if they can come back from that, then so can I, right? If so, how? Where would I begin? Even assuming you don’t have all the answers, hopefully you can point me to someone in the church who can. It’s also nice to read about someone else who believes and is unwilling to hide it.

You mentioned how we often associate “idols” with “busyness, pride, putting sports above church on Sundays.” Perhaps it has been our society’s love for those idols that has prepared the younger generation to accept these more blatant occult/pagan idols. Perhaps we need to reconsider what it means to “love the Lord your God with all you heart, all your soul, and all your mind,” so that we can teach our children to do likewise.
I couldn’t agree more, but what to do? Unfortunately, at my age, no one wants to listen because I’m outdated, and those who do listen are already of the same mind and having a hard time getting their peers to agree. Those young people who do believe are ones I pray for. They are the ones who need our prayers and support because they are the ones in the pit fighting the fine fight. In Jesus day, it started with 12 and those 12 grew in numbers. There’s hope.
Satan was an angel sent by God or Jesus Christ (It’s a while since I read this in my bible) to be overseeing hell and it’s purpose. Satan wasn’t evil, he was just the most able person to ensure that hell and it’s punishment was maintained. That’s how I understood what I read. So I’m sorry but satanic this and satanism that are complete and utter nonsense. They illustrate what people are lacking in the majority of opinions held, no knowledge or understanding. If Satan was so evil then God would have destroyed him. Satan was however placed in hell with the intention of God to oversee it with the functionality God desired. So I think that satanic worship is in fact a devotion to an angel, Satan. Tell this to any satanists that you meet and then see their faces and hear their words!?!? If I say Santa is Satan (anagram of letters in the name), it’s more plausible than the fact Satan is the demonic king of evil with the 666 number and so on and so forth.
I’m not however dismissive about there being a devil. I live with bipolar disorder and I have experienced episodes of self harm. I’m sure the devil gets in you via your weakest side. I’m right handed yet I harmed my right arm by using my left hand. It’s definitely something to debate about but I have found that no one is willing to do so (professionals I have asked).
