Enough’s Enough

Sometimes, you’ve got to take a good, hard look in the mirror and say, “Enough’s enough.”

And friends, that isΒ a very frank and very difficult conversation to have with yourself. In just two little words.

For in that small-but-powerfulΒ statement…shit.gets.real.

A lot of times, in recovery, you can get…a little too comfortable. I know I did, and frankly still do, a lot of times. A little too comfortable, and if you’re not careful, you can start treading lightly down a path that goes to the black abyss. And this looks different for everybody.

Maybe you’re conveniently “forgetting” to bring a snack with you to school. Or are getting slightly too friendly with the elliptical. Perhaps you’ve become chained to a certain pattern of foods, or are giving into disordered thoughts or behaviors.

For me, it’s letting ED worm his way back into my brain and cause me to doubt my worth and draw into myself.

But we’re not just talking about recovery here either. Every single person hasΒ something in their lives that they just can’t shake.

Perhaps it’s gossiping about others. Or harboring anger or jealousy. Maybe you’re constantly losing patience with people or just can’t kick some sort of addiction – whether to shopping online, or drinking one too many, or maybe just not taking care of yourself.

Whatever it is, it’s infiltrated into your life, and – for lack of a better phrase – itsΒ got you by the balls.

Now is the time to say,Β “Enough’s enough.”

This post was inspired by a podcast I listened to today. Because, surprise surprise, that’s my secret weapon for staying in recovery.

But the podcast was about Matthew 21, where Jesus cleanses the temple.

I know, I know. Another Bible reference. But I invite you to just keep reading. My disclaimer is this: I don’t want to waste either your or my time. If I’m going to share something from the Bible, it’s for a good reason. I’m not going to shove it down your throat or be preachy. Because I respect you, and I’m sharing something that I’ve found to be powerful. So my invitation is to just read it. You don’t have to believe it. But just have an open mind. πŸ™‚

Anyway: Matthew 21: Jesus goes into the temple courts to find a bunch of people buying and selling different things, and gambling, and just teeming with debauchery.

So what did Jesus do? He busted a cap.

No not really. But, actually, really.

He flipped over the tables and drove everybody out. Jesus became a whirlwind of righteous fury.

And as He did, He said to them, “It is written, My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers.”

AΒ den of robbers.Β

AΒ denΒ of freakingΒ robbers.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

Who is the biggest ROBBER of them all?! ED! ED – who is a thief and robs us of our lives. Of our bodies. Our hair. Our social lives. Our self-esteem and self-worth. Our reproductive and bone health. ED, that dirty bastard, is a robber!

You and me, our bodies are temples in themselves. Because Jesus dwells in our hearts. He made us. He died for us. He lives in our hearts.

1 Corinthians 9:19Β Do you not know that your bodies are templesΒ of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;Β you were bought at a price.Β Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Bam. So let’s bring it all full circle.

Our bodies are temples. Much like the temple in Matthew 21. And frankly, at least for me personally, there’s a whole lot of “money changers and gamblers” in my temple. And especially during my anorexia, it wasΒ literally a den of robbers. It was a freaking den of THE robber — ED!

But anyway, in order to “cleanse the temple,” Jesus had to come in there and just have a total upheaval. A rebellion. He had to turn up and flip the friggin tables.

It was an “enough’s enough” moment.

You don’t have to be in the middle of a full-fledged eating disorder to need an “enough’s enough” moment.

The truth is, God wants to come in there and just clear all the robbers out of your den. Whatever it is that has got you chained, keeping you from freedom, keeping you in a pattern of demise – He wants to just come in there and flip the tables. Go ape shiz all over those robbers in your life.

But you’ve got to say, “enough’s enough.” You’ve got to ask Him.

And tonight was one of those E’sE moments.

Because if IΒ live with the robbers, I’mΒ gonna end up broke.

Let’s flip the friggin tables.

  1. WOW…you go girl…I can remember when I was in the early years of my recovery and I would get angry and on my soapbox….that is/was a good thing…it is part of the releasing…I honor you…now after 29 years of sobriety I am all about love…and still sober and love my life, I see that for you also….much love and light

  2. you have such an amazing way with words and talking about something so serious you place little things that you must know will make us smile and I will look up the verses you placed on your post also. and the photos are amazingly placed god bless you and your recovery.

  3. I did not find this preachy. I think you want everyone to know that they are loved and cherished as they are and to honor the bodies they have been given. This is an inspiring post even for those who are struggling with emotional robbers, or trying to find myself robbers or whatever robbers have somehow entered our minds. There is too much suffering in the world and these few words remind us that we can defeat it if we can strengthen ourselves to overcome.

  4. I love that you’re strong enough and self-aware enough to recognize the little signs of falling back into old habits. Even the little things that seem like no big deal can add up fast. Sending strength your way!

  5. Loved this post! Nothing like some righteous anger(anger at those things that also, anger God)to speed the way to healing. Sometimes, that’s what it takes to clean house!

  6. This is a really great post:) I love how you state all of your feelings in such a way that is emotional, intelligent and witty. Keep up the great work πŸ™‚

  7. I have to read at least three older posts, in order, for every new one you publish. Someday I’ll catch up. I am so happy that many others are discovering the power, the beauty, and the encouragement found in the sharing of your ongoing battle. I am convinced you are causing some to take a serious look at the Cross as a place to exchange their pain for God’s love.

God has a mighty voice in you and it is being heard. Thanks, my friend. πŸ™‚

    • Gosh thank you so much Tony. yes, you’ve taken on quite the task of reading my blog in its entirety! Haha thank you☺️ as always, I’m grateful for your overwhelming support. Blessings to you friend

  8. Good use of Bible references! Don’t be afraid to use them, either! I think it’s respectful of people to point out our “user’s manual.” Another analogy to consider in regard to the sins and enemy fortresses in our lives that war against us being fully glorifying to God is the conquest of the promised land. Joshua and Caleb saw the giants, saw the cities, saw the machines of war, but regarded God’s power over them and His promise for their destruction over the power those enemies appeared to wield. We then see how devastating it was to the people who failed to believe God’s promise, then tried to go to war WITHOUT God, then died in the wilderness. But God’s promise was kept and the walls of Jericho fell (by His power) and, when the people didn’t have a sacred sin hidden among them, they were victorious over the other encampments of evil, too.

  9. Another awesome post. Sometimes that’s all it takes – a choice. We have to say that enough is enough so that we can move on and do the actual work. Very inspiring.

  10. I do not know this struggle. I don’t even have a close friend (to my knowledge) that has walked this path. But I love your challenge & your point of view. And sometimes, enough’s enough! So keep fighting, I’ll keep reading, & if we can parlay that into mutual encouragement, then we both win!

  11. I really like how you write about your experience witty yet serious. I didn’t find it preachy at all. All the best on your journey…..you are so right we all have some tables to flip😊
Thank you also for stopping by my blog

    • Hi friend, my goodness, yes that sounds like a stealthy robber indeed. I will definitely keep you in my prayers! And yes, let’s invite the Big Guy to bust a cap on it! πŸ˜€ thanks for stopping by

  12. I absolutely LOVE the way you write and express yourself, it’s just so real and I admire that. The way in which you discuss such serious matters that are so close to home for you and for myself is so brilliant, the way you link openness, humor and spirituality is just brilliant! Keep going beaut!

  13. Great post! Thanks for sharing. I love the reference to Matthew 21. I haven’t dealt with ED, but for the things I have struggled with, Matthew 21 definitely puts it into perspective for me!

  14. AMEN! And this totally applies to anything that’s holding us back. Love how Paul put it in the beginning of Hebrews 12: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” Of course, I think I like the way you said it better: “Let’s flip the friggin tables.” We need to get mad and not let anything hold us back from the amazing plans our Father has for us, plan for life, hope, and future!

  15. Thank you for doing what you do πŸ™‚ β™‘ just a thing to add, theres no finishing line to healing , its a process! so lets all work on it, one step at a time xoxo

  16. I did what you said: Started at the last and I was encouraged. I appreciate your honesty, courage and faith. I never had a disorder, but I have my own baggage. It’s good to know a bit about your suitcases and where people can come for encouragement and help when enough is too much.

  17. Great post! You mentioned a podcast you had been listening to. Can you share it, too? My daughter has struggled with ED for years and is in her first year of college now. It has become an even greater battle. Her heart is to help young girls find their identity in Christ at an early age and have valuable resources available in the church! She is attending Christian college and on her way to fulfilling that calling, so I believe the enemy is working overtime to try to take her down. Thank you for any assistance you can offer πŸ™‚

    • Hi Gina, sure. I will get that to you when I get home this evening. I’m sorry to hear your daughter is struggling with ED. I will pray for her and you and your family. She can and will get through this. God will strengthen her. Xx
